Ilhan Omar Faces Censure Resolution After Suggesting Jewish Students Are 'Pro-Genocide'

On Tuesday, Representative Don Bacon (R-NE) filed a resolution to censure Representative Ilhan Omar (D-MN) over comments that the Minnesota Democrat made suggesting that Jewish students objecting to the pro-Hamas protests on college campuses may be "pro-genocide."

Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.) on Tuesday filed a resolution to censure Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) after she suggested some Jewish students are “pro-genocide.”
Bacon said he does not plan to make his resolution privileged, which means the House will not immediately vote on the measure. He said he will work with Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and GOP leadership on timing.
But the mere introduction of the legislation marks a sharp rebuke of Omar, who has found herself in hot water with Republicans in the past.
“It’s unacceptable to say, calling Jewish Americans that are Americans, calling them pro-genocide,” Bacon told reporters Tuesday. “It’s just unacceptable. So I want to take a bold stand.”

Omar made the remarks during a visit to the pro-Hamas encampment at Columbia University last month.

Omar’s comments were met with widespread condemnation. House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) said Omar was “encouraging violence against Jewish students” when “embracing pro-terrorists extremists,” House Democratic Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar (Calif.) said “it’s not the language I would use” when asked about her comments, and the head of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) said the remarks were “abhorrent.”
“It is abhorrent that a sitting member of Congress would slander an entire group of young people in such a cold, calculated manner. This is how people get killed,” ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt wrote on the social platform X.

This isn't the first time Rep. Omar has been the subject of a censure resolution. In January, House Minority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN) called for an ethics investigation into the Minnesota Democrat, following which Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene attempted to force a vote on a censure resolution, which never came to a vote. Also, in 2023, Representative Omar was removed from the House Foreign Affairs Committee for antisemitic remarks.

Statements of this kind from a sitting congresswoman can have a broad-reaching impact.

Omar's comments are particularly odious coming as they do after the Oct 7th attacks on Israel by Hamas, which attacks included not only the worst targeted slaughter of the Jewish people since the Holocaust but also some of the worst atrocities seen in the century so far. If there is any attempt at genocide by Israel, then clearly, they aren't very good at it since the population of Gaza has grown steadily since 1950, and Arab Muslims make up approximately 20 percent of Israel's population as of 2019.
