Convention Live Stream Day Three

Consider this an Open Thread. Some of the big names tonight include former Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, and of course, future Vice President Rep. Paul Ryan.

COMMENTS

  • tnfriendofcoal101368

Mitch McConnell speaking already said “Mitch Ryan”. I am sure this will be a rousing speech. Rousing for the hot dog vendors as all the delegates go to the concession stands for a snack.

  • tnfriendofcoal101368

Rand Paul is in his wheelhouse now talking about the debt…

  • tnfriendofcoal101368

He almost lost them there but wisely moved on…

  • tnfriendofcoal101368

John McCain – delegates get a double dose w/McConnell and McCain in the same night.

  • vangoghssister

Ditto TNFOC, all I can think of is Really?? What’s deal with putting folks to sleep before getting to the good people. I was amazed to see Janine Turner. I had no idea she was a conservative. Funny she should be on as I just finished watching the 2nd season of Northern Exposure.

  • tnfriendofcoal101368

Whatever else I thought McCain was going to eat the podium when he was talking about the security leaks and the defense budget cuts.

  • tnfriendofcoal101368

Morris is right – there should have been more…Obama said, we got but McCain is all foreign policy; all the time…

  • runner12

I agree. Just caught the end of it. It was not so good. I was surprised because AG Bondi is so good in interviews and as a commentator. Maybe the tag-team thing threw her off her game.

  • runner12

Yep. Hope some of their friends made a Starbucks run beforehand. Lots of coffee needed to get through those two speeches.

  • tngal

And I thought last night was a snoozefest. One minute I think I’ve OD’d on valium, the next, I think I ‘m doing Nyquil. I know you’re not playing to your base. But really, give me a reason to acknowledge you. Why should I? You’re not acknowledging me! Give me 20 minutes of Demint, Palin and Cain and I’ll be back in your camp. Other than that…get me a pillow. PS , your little appeasement to the paulettes with the video highlighting ron paul’s career with a a couple of comments by Jim Demint does NOT get you out of the doghouse on the absence of conservative firecrackers during this convention. So pppprrrtttt!!!

  • krish

where are the exciting speakers? frightenend bunch of republicans cannot even say Barack Obama!

  • retrocon87

Rob Portman seems to have about as much charisma as a doorknob… this guy was almost the veep? good lord………..

  • eugenio

Touche, Pawlenty!: “He failed at his first job.”

  • rabun1016

    Pretty sad.

  • tnfriendofcoal101368

“Barack Obama’s failed us. But look, it’s understandable. A lot of people fail at their first job.” When Pawlenty is getting off the best lines of the night; well….it’s not a great lineup.

  • runner12

Not a huge Huckabee fan, but he is a good speaker and communicator. Definitely not boring. So far he has been one of the better speeches of the night.

  • tnfriendofcoal101368

so far Pawlenty and the Huckster are the highlights – wow, just wow. Ryan has a lot of pressure to wake the crowd up.

  • tnfriendofcoal101368

Condoleeza should have started here with trade and energy as part of global competition and private sector growth and jobs.

  • chbroussard

Agree with the majority of comments that this convention has been a snoozer. But at least you can take a bathroom break and not miss anything. Heck, you could take a three day cruise and not miss anything. Hopefully tomorrow will be a brighter day.

  • runner12

Last night’s speakers were much better overall. But then again, this group tonight had McConnell and McCain so they were at a disadvantage from the get-go. Pawlenty, Huckabee, and Rice have given the best speeches of the night so far.

  • retrocon87

    Fantastic speech by Condi

  • tnfriendofcoal101368

After that she just killed it…

  • tnfriendofcoal101368

Susana Martinez just killed that…on the guns…she is easily in her element here

  • runner12

Add to the “best speeches of the night” list thus far: Gov. Susana Martinez.

  • kentucky

    NBC. Wow.

Rice finishes her speech and Brokaw immediately states that so many of the delegates are critical of the circumstances of Obama’s birth and question whether he was really born in Hawaii. Then Brian Williams make some weird statement about abortion rights. I at least thought Brokaw would call it down the middle. He should join the clowns at MSNBC, who he has called out, in recent years.

  • tnfriendofcoal101368

Martinez is the one throwing red meat…who’d a thunk it?

  • vangoghssister

I’m so glad it’s bash obama nite

  • tnfriendofcoal101368

The Huckster, Rice, Martinez and Ryan brought it home from the snoozefest that preceded them.

  • runner12

Ryan started out a little stiff and looked a little unlike himself for the first 2-3 minutes. But once he got into the budget, the economy, and O Care he got on a roll and never looked back. Those who were asking for more substance definitely got it with Ryan. When he talked about cutting spending and reforming government, he came across as sincere and committed to doing so. You can tell he is not just spouting off platitudes. Ryan comes across as a true believer in fiscal responsibility. He additionally had some funny one-liners that were well-delivered.

Have I mentioned how great it is to have a vice-presidential candidate who is an economist and not a lawyer?

    Well done, future Mr. Vice-President.

  • kentucky

“Looking up at faded Obama posters wondering, ‘when can I get on with my life?’”

    Bravo, Congressman-for-now Ryan.

  • http://www.alanjoelny.com alanjoelny

That was a phenomenal speech. I can’t wait for the Biden-Ryan debate now!

  • Coop

LOL! Guess you stumbled across a C-SPAN rerun or something. The dynamic speakers tonight had no problem whatsoever blasting that race-baiting, lightweight Marxist who only blames others for his problems and has never run anything but his mouth.

  • septembergurl

Great speech from Ryan. The earlier line-up was boring but oni, Martinez, Ryan and (hate to admit) Huckabee were terrific. Great nite overall.

  • septembergurl

    oni=Condi

  • kentucky

And get ready to be blown away if you think Romney can’t deliver in his convention address. Jonah Goldberg said of a recent Romney quote “As with most statements by Gov. Romney, words cannot express the depth and breadth of blandness with which the ine was delivered.” This is generally true, but he can knock it out of the park in front of a big crowd. Get ready.

  • SoFiMil

Uh, hum (clearing throat)…runner12, my good friend, … : )

  • http://www.TerriersOfTheRight.blogspot.com Flagstaff

I think many of the talking heads who don’t like our speakers miss the point because of their narrow viewpoints. The convention has a theme. Democrats complain about problems–Republicans attack them. The speeches reflect an intelligent discussion of some of those problems and why Romney/Ryan is the right ticket..

  • Melody Warbington

Condi, Martinez and Huckabee – a single, a double and a triple (and I’m not a big fan of the Huckster). Paul Ryan hit a home run about midway through. I missed everyone before prime time.

  • http://www.TerriersOfTheRight.blogspot.com Flagstaff

I’ve identified two poor speeches so far this week. It wouldn’t be nice to say which ones, but if you saw them or heard them you know the ones.

  • http://www.TerriersOfTheRight.blogspot.com Flagstaff

I’d rank the first three in reverse order to that. JMO. Almost all of these speeches are achieving their intended purposes, I believe. Wouldn’t surprise me to find out that Mitt is making many of the decisions about theme and speaker.

  • http://www.TerriersOfTheRight.blogspot.com Flagstaff

Gal, listen to what is said. Then think about how you would feel if one of your heroes were saying it. If that doesn’t help, I’m not sure what you want. I keep hearing “smaller government,” ” lower taxes,” “balanced budgets,” and that sounds good to me.

  • http://www.TerriersOfTheRight.blogspot.com Flagstaff

You need to get out more. Or maybe it’s stay in more. Missed her speech. How was it?

  • clearasday

Condi exudes confidence, competence and class. I also like her old school, non-teleprompter delivery. It allows the speaker to make better eye contact with the viewers.

  • http://www.TerriersOfTheRight.blogspot.com Flagstaff

He also mentioned Ann Romney “poppin’ out babies” this morning. Anti-Mormon slur.

  • commonsenseobserver

Ryan performed up to expectations, Rice exceeded them, McCain was surprisingly good, and the rest were decent. Tomorrow is Mitt Romney’s time to convince Americans to believe in him, and in their own country, again.
    Romney-Ryan can change it.
