Why Ron Fournier Proves Mitt Romney Must Beat The Liberal Media, Not Woo Them

When Republicans talk about the liberal press, they should not just remember John Harris at the Politico, but also Ron Fournier of National Journal. If you want to know what the subtle racism of the liberal media looks like, consider Ron Fournier’s latest epiphany on how Mitt Romney’s welfare attacks on Obama are racist.

It takes one to know one I guess.

On the day the well respected by the press Yahoo! News Washington Bureau Chief David Chalain revealed his true colors only to see his media brethren rush to defend him after his firing (he lamented on a live mic that Romney had no problem partying as black people drowned), Ron Fournier was out accusing Mitt Romney of racism. Fournier is one of those members of the Gang of 500 that other members listen to and aspire to be.

According to Fournier, Mitt Romney’s ad saying, “You wouldn’t have to work” is a dog whistle that real means “Blacks wouldn’t have to work.” Doing no more extrapolation than Fournier did, what he is really saying is that if you are a Republican talking about welfare you are a racist.

What does it say about Ron Fournier that he hears the line about Mitt Romney’s ad and he himself translates it as “blacks wouldn’t have to work”? What is his presupposition about black people in his interpretation?

The fact is, Ron Fournier is a liberal. He does not like Mitt Romney. He does not like Republicans. And he hates the fact that Republicans and a sizable number of independent voters largely think he and his cohorts in the mainstream media are mostly full of crap. So to get around it, he and his cohorts have invented a liberal organization called Politifact, run by a sizable number of Democrats who had the mendacity to declare themselves independent voters before taking the job, that they can hide behind as an impartial arbiter of their crap claiming it is truth.

Consider his claims of racism about Mitt Romney and the GOP. He descends to “it’s Politifact, not me!”

Before explaining why these tactics work (and why Romney’s team knows, or should know, they are playing the race card), let’s quickly deal with this fact: The ad is wrong. As countless impartial fact-checkers have noted, the Obama administration memo cited by the Romney team actually gives states flexibility to find better ways of getting welfare recipients into jobs.

Why ignore fact-checkers?

Only a liberal or an idiot could take the fact checkers seriously in this. As Conn Carroll noted, Ron Fournier willfully chooses to ignore that what the Obama Administration did was allow states to change the definition of work.

As J. P. Freire noted on twitter responding to Fournier, “So wait, Obama guts welfare reform, Republicans object, and their objection is playing the race card?” Fournier’s response? Hide behind the fact checkers the media set up to claim themselves right.

But what are the real facts? The Obama Administration did end welfare as we know it. It is objectively fact unless you are a fact checker or Ron Fournier.

Just consider the mind blowing leaps and bounds of Ron Fournier — he can take a line in a commercial and extrapolate that it is really about black people, but he cannot take a regulation from the Obama administration allowing states to change the definition of work and extrapolate that this is designed to get around the work requirements in the 1996 Welfare Reform Act. Again — only a liberal or an idiot could do that.

But Fournier would rather claim racism about Mitt Romney based on his own preconceptions about race and claim Romney is playing the race card — “coincidentally” at the same time the Democrats start pushing out the “GOP is playing the race card” meme — and hide behind “fact checkers” than intellectually admit he is wrong.

His column is horribly offensive and his unwillingness to do anything other than hide behind liberal fact checkers who didn’t really check the facts is pathetic for a person in his position.

To paraphrase Fournier, that leaves one inescapable conclusion: Ron Fournier is either recklessly ignorant of the facts, some of which he possesses – or he is lying about why (and how) he is playing the race card.

Ron Fournier’s actions show that as long as the media sets up phony fact checkers as arbiters of a truth they want that may not be, Mitt Romney must not just beat Barack Obama, but also beat the liberals in the media.

Fight the media by exposing them for what they are on their own ground, like John Sununu does. That would be even better.

As James Taranto said a couple of days ago – if you can hear the dog whistle, you are the dog.

The exact same situation about the Liberal lies concerning Obama gutting welfare is explained a little further in Coulter’s latest column. Yes, I lost a lot of respect for Ann in the past year but she hits it out of the park in this one.

The mainstream media is now spreading pathetic lies about everything from welfare reform to the Janesville GM Plant. I agree- Romney-Ryan must take their message of a better future directly to the people, even if they have to fling the mainstream media out of their press bus to do so.

  • commonsenseobserver

And let’s advertise about newspapers’ bias in their own pages. Or, even better, have them attack one another (because we all know they are greedy and envious, even of their own).

  • snappy101

Because of the urban elite media’s refusal to set foot outside of the cities, the people they know on welfare are black. Perhaps it could be suggested that if they weren’t such bigots against suburban/rural news coverage, they wouldn’t automatically think black when they hear the word “welfare.”

  • Mars the Avenger

Again, as I posted on another page, I quit taking seriously a dinosaur media, made up of Marxist glorified script readers who style themselves “journalists” but wouldn’t know an original thought if it bit them in the ass. This moron, like Chrissy Matthews, is no more fit to be a “journalist” than the cockroach I stomp out in my garage.

  • commonsenseobserver

Fact-checking the media: There’ve been a couple of lies flying around, and I think Team Romney should set it straight.
    1) The Janesville Plant actually tottered on until June 2009. Obama promised he would save it for another century- he broke his promise, and the plant never re-opened. Ryan didn’t lie in his acceptance speech.
    2) Ryan supported a GOP stimulus alternative that cost more than $700 billion. That is true, however, while the bill was opposed by many Conservatives, it focused on financial relief (including unemployment assistance and tax cuts), stabilising the housing market, and funding infrastructure. You know, things that could actually help Americans. Unlike Obama’s pork-filled bill with payoffs to special interests and foreign companies. Let’s face it- if the GOP bill had passed, would Obama be whining about repairing infrastructure today?
    3) Ryan requested stimulus funds for his district. He did. However, this request was treated like any other by an ordinary constituent for his help and service. Furthermore, like what I said above, would Obama be running away from his jobs record if Paul Ryan had been responsible for administering stimulus funds? He could actually have made good use of them for proven job creation.
    4) Romney-Ryan are lying on welfare reform. While some ads were oversimplified, the charge is false. Obama’s policy does open the door to removing work from welfare, gutting the law and going against the spirit and letter of welfare reform. “Nuts”.

Why does the Left always assume that when welfare is mentioned it refers to black people? Are they so racist that they think only black people are on welfare? They might be shocked to learn that around 70% of welfar recipients are white.

It is not the GOP who is racist. It is the race-baiting Left who is making broad racial assumptions with no basis in fact.

  • tnfriendofcoal101368

Rich Lowry has an article up at Politico that is well worth a read on this subject. Well, Rich Lowry is always worth a read but he takes apart this racist argument, nicely.

  • General_Confusion

    Scratch’s head, re-reads, scratch’s head again…

Point A: “Romney-Ryan are lying on welfare reform.”

Point B: “Obama’s policy does open the door to removing work from welfare, gutting the law and going against the spirit and letter of welfare reform.”

Sooo… Obama removes the work requirement and Romney and Ryan are lying?

Is there some sort nuanced thing I’m missing here?

  • commonsenseobserver

I meant that the media was saying that they are lying :P

  • emptybucket

ya got that right about Rich Lowry. He is always worth a read and always worth paying attention to when on Fox. Have learned much from that young man and he doesn’t know us but we feel as if he could be our neighbor!

  • General_Confusion

    Thanks, I get it now.

runner, up until about 4 years ago I always associated welfare with whites. My experience with folks on welfare has been mostly white. Whites willing to take the system for everything they could, however, sadly, there aren’t many blacks in our still somewhat rural area. I remember one white lady who felt the need to carry her purse everywhere and slept with it. One day she opened it up and I saw cash, cash, and more cash….right next to her food stamps. Granted that was years ago but I would imagine there still are some who play the system and take whatever they can get. Anything to not have to work. Obama has just made it easier for that type of personality to get even more.

There is abundant evidence that the alphabet news networks are financed by foreign enterprises which have a vested interest in the diminution of the power of the United States. If you write to the sponsors, you’ll need to address the letter to company headquarters in Beijing and Moscow. Oh, dear, was that raaaccist?

  • Tbone

Just look at the guy. it is no wonder he is a liberal. He doesn’t look like he could do anything but wet a bed.

  • emptybucket

tn, please right that diary! on Oreilly the other night this topic was covered with Bernie G I think, the point was that even tho they are losing customers, they still control the underpinnings of political conversation. I’d like to know why those in the political arena either elected or otherwise, still pay attention to NYtimes and their very biased views. If I was a Liberal, I’d want representation for my views but not total exclusion or misrepresentation of my opponents views. Knowing the truth about both sides would be my goal as both sides spin.

  • macbookben

    Zo deconstructs this topic nicely…

Lieberal media has a rotten core. The battle rages between the forces of truth and the children of the liar. The lieberals (intentional misspelling) do not care about facts and truth but only how to manipulate them. They must and will be defeated. Maybe it is time to ratchet up the truth on their propaganda machine. The education system teaches kids what to think and not how to think. This needs to change for the long term. Mocking these lieberals is the most powerful weapon to communicate to independent thinkers the truth. Take away any perceived respect for their lack of an honest thought or word. We must on a daily basis reach out to independents. Marginalize the mush for brains lieberal media is the key. Good article Erick. Target rich environment. The lieberals are influenced, to say the least, by the father of lies.

Just before his convention speech, the Democrats and the mainstream media collude to produce another Romney hit piece:
    http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/news/the-federal-bailout-that-saved-mitt-romney-20120829?print=true
You can see all the loose ends in that story. Yes, it’s a liberal magazine, but the DNC is already pushing this new talking point. Ugh.

Liberals are now reviving false charges about the Bain rescue. Fortunately, even the WaPo fact checker has said something:
“But in reality, Romney rescued his former firm, including restructuring its
bank loans, in a deal in which his former partners were given the toughest
medicine. Bain & Company survives to this day, which certainly suggests
Romney’s solution was a better outcome than letting the firm collapse.

We wavered between one and two Pinocchios here. Calling a loan-restructuring
a “bailout” is a real stretch, especially since there does not appear to be an
unusual transaction. But Cutter can reasonably claim that Bain & Company
benefited from government procedures, already in place, to help it deal with its
financial troubles. It’s too bad she did not phrase it that way.”
    http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/fact-checker/post/did-mitt-romney-get-a-bailout-for-bain-and-company/2012/07/24/gJQAvzSh7W_blog.html
” Romney drove a hard bargain with the firm’s creditors but especially with his
former colleagues: “He was toughest when it came to negotiation with the
partners at Bain & Company. He told the founding partners they had to give
up about $100 million, or half the money they’d been planning to take out of the
    firm.”

    http://www.nationalreview.com/exchequer/287927/no-bain-did-not-get-bailout
“If anything, Romney’s record in the Bain turnaround looks even better on closer examination — money was clawed back from no-account executives, and ownership of the firm was transferred to the general partners from the senior partners who led the company to disaster.”

I thought Chris “The Thrill Running Down My Leg” Matthews’ head was literally going to pop off trying to think of how he was going to call Condi Rice a racist….

  • freemkts

Rupert Murdoch and other wealthy patriots like the Kochs should buy up many of these media outlets. Then they could fire all the liberal staff and turn them into reputable organizations, or just shut them down.

  • hart65

Same goes for food stamps, out of wedlock births and anything else that could invite a “racist” claim. Someone please tell me how a policy that helps a black single mother won’t help a white or hispanic single mother. And we have evidence that the work requirements in the original TANF got all races and colors back into the workforce. The only way to stop discrimination is to stop discriminating.

  • runner12

It is all about an “entitlement mentality” which has become pervasive in our society. It has nothing to do with race or gender or anything else. It is about a state of mind in which people believe the government “owes” them something or they are just too lazy to work.

These people drain the system and take resources away from people who truly need help like the elderly or disabled and/or the single mom who is working to better her life.
