NBC Foreign Correspondent on Obama Egypt Admission: ‘I almost had to sit down when I heard that’

Update 12:45pm: The White House has issued a “clarification” of President Obama’s “not an ally” remark about Egypt. In brief, it amounts to “that’s a technical term and we don’t like technical things.” From Foreign Policy:

“I think folks are reading way too much into this,” [White House spokesman Tommy] Vietor said. “‘Ally’ is a legal term of art. We don’t have a mutual defense treaty with Egypt like we do with our NATO allies. But as the president has said, Egypt is longstanding and close partner of the United States, and we have built on that foundation by supporting Egypt’s transition to democracy and working with the new government.”

Vietor referred to Obama’s Wednesday phone call with Mohamed Morsy, during which Obama pressed the Egyptian president to ensure the safety and protection of U.S. personnel and facilities in Egypt. Morsy agreed to do so, according to a White House statement on the phone call.

“The President said that he rejects efforts to denigrate Islam, but underscored that there is never any justification for violence against innocents and acts that endanger American personnel and facilities,” the statement said. “President Morsi expressed his condolences for the tragic loss of American life in Libya and emphasized that Egypt would honor its obligation to ensure the safety of American personnel.”

Not mentioned with regard to the Obama–Morsi phone call, in which Obama declared that he “rejects efforts to denigrate Islam”? Any presidential “rejection” of efforts to pressure the U.S. government into curtailing the God-given right to free expression. Unsurprisingly.

To quote President Obama, the fever that has held the media since September 11 may be breaking. At least, one mainstream journalist appears able to see – and willing to acknowledge – that Barack Obama, not Mitt Romney, is commander in chief, and that the situations in Egypt and elsewhere right now reflect a far worse reality than that of four years ago.

For NBC Chief Foreign Correspondent Peter Richard Engel, the tipping point was a Telemundo interview that aired last night, in which Obama declared that Egypt is not an ally of the United States. As Moe Lane noted here this morning, that is a significant development from last year, when Obama specifically acknowledged Egypt as ” an ally of ours on a lot of critical issues.”

Here’s the video:

CHUCK TODD: I just want to get your first reaction, before you give me a report, of the President saying Egypt was not an ally or an enemy.

PETER RICHARD ENGEL: Yeah, I almost had to sit down when I heard that. For the last forty years, the United States has had two main allies in the Middle East — Saudi Arabia and Egypt, the other ally in the Middle East being Israel. For the President to come out and say, well, he’s not exactly sure if Egypt is an ally any more but it’s not an enemy, that is a significant change in the perspective of Washington toward this country, the biggest country in the Arab world. It makes one wonder, well, was it worth it? Was it worth supporting the Arab Spring, supporting the demonstrations here in Tahrir Square, when now in Tahrir Square there are clashes going on behind me right in front of the US embassy?

You can see now teargas coming — teargas being fired into a crowd of demonstrators who are trying to get close to the embassy, which is at the end of the street, and throw rocks at the US embassy. A very different scene here, a very different Egypt before, when the United States — President Obama — was supporting the demonstrators, President Mubarak was in power, and Egypt was very much an ally. The President doesn’t seem to be sure if Egypt is an ally any more, and some demonstrators who the Arab Spring helped give a voice to are trying to attack the US embassy.

Obama and Morsi reportedly spoke today. In that conversation, Morsi said, “I affirmed to him the need for deterrent legal measures against those who want to damage relations between peoples, and particularly between the people of Egypt and the people of America.” According to the same report, “In another statement, Mursi said he expects “assurances from the U.S. government to prevent any infringement on the sacred.”

In other words, we’ll follow the U.S. Embassy in Cairo’s lead and condemn the heck out of people exercising their God-given rights, if we know what’s good for us (and if we want Egypt’s ruling Muslim Brotherhood to like us.) Meanwhile, the Muslim Brotherhood is calling for a “million man march” Friday, a day they’re calling “Friday of Anger” – a continuation of this week’s protests in far greater (and, we should expect, more violent) numbers.

At one time, Egypt was an ally. Technicalities aside, I wouldn’t describe Egypt as an ally now. Obama’s foreign policy has been a disaster, but on this one narrow point, I think he’s right. And, his policy should be consistent with his statement.

  • Brookhaven

Egypt was our ally for over 30 years thanks to…Jimmy Carter.

You’ve got to wonder what Carter thinks of Obama now that Obama has destroyed Carter’s one real, lasting accomplishment as president: the Camp David Accords.

  • proudmarinemom

    Jeff,

Good diary, but please correct: The NBC News reporter is Richard Engel (not Peter Engel).

  • gbenton

This is what foreign policy looks like when amateurs learn on the job that silly leftist ideas clash brutally into the fixed wall of reality leaving death and dismay in their wake.

What’s consistent is that when Obama gets something ‘right’, like OBL, it’s due to the hard work and determination of others. When he acts on his own in real time, invariably he botches it and says something idiotic like the ivory tower bonehead that he is.

Turns out, beyond the hallowed walls of Harvard, talking out your butt has consequences. If only he’d stayed there.

“Mr. President, you didn’t kill Osama bin Laden–somebody else made that happen” Has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it?

  • davesinsanantonio

No, he is not acting above his pay grade. President IS is his pay grade, unfortunately. But, he is certainly acting above his ability level!!! Back bencher in a state legislature is above his ability level! Too bad we let an overextended back bencher have the most complex job in the world, and that the OJT didn’t take. And now this sorry excuse for anything wants another four years of remedial training??? Which he will probably skip for his tee time??? Are the American people really stupid enough to re-elect this clown?

  • celador2

right, one of the more refreshing thngs of many about Rick Perry for president was his new approach to foreign aid Start at zero!
US must haveaid standards and the ones imposed by Obama are lacking for Libya and Egypt.

  • celador2

Obama jumped on the CNN hyped Arab Spring and like CNN did not know who the rebels were. Now they know forces US can not control are alive and well in ME including Egypt.
Copts, women and tourists have had a set back with the junta and now Brotherhood stands back as Embassy is assaulted.
Still the Engel criticism of Obama is a momentray doubt not a trend IMO.

  • celador2

When Obama backed a rebellion in early 2011 he threw over a long time ally Mubarak who had kept the peace wirth Israel, protected Copts and women and allowed tourism small business to thrive.
Obama backed a junta and Brotherhood made of unknown forces that have not delivered US and regional security at Mubarak levels.

  • sexysadie

This is worse than klinton and I never thought THAT would happen.

  • sexysadie

That’s because oblamer is a closet muslim. He thinks that no one can see that, but his actions speak much louder than his words. He is the consummate marxist-commie-radical-megalomaniac.

  • sexysadie

Many people can see it–the problem is that oblamer uses lies to cover up his ineptitude and hatred for America. He’s flip-flopped on so many things just since his glorification in Charlotte it’s not funny! He’s downright scarey and if he is re-elected, America will never be the same.

  • sexysadie

Opinionscount: These Americans need to get the heck out of these god-forsaken beds of hatred!!! What’s the matter with them??? I don’t remember who said it, but some years ago I think it was one of our presidents said that all Americans need to get out of the middle-east! If these Americans choose to stay, then they risk their own lives–and those of their loved ones with them.

  • sexysadie

Yes. To answer your question. Many Americans are too stupid to see through this marxist-commie-megalomaniac’s lies. That’s what scares me. How anyone in their right mind can think that somehow this malignant narcissist is an American is beyond me.

  • sexysadie

It was American soldiers who did that, thank you.

  • sexysadie

Well here’s another feather in obamanation’s cap: Sebelilus breaks the law and now his unholiness has declared she will not be punished nor asked to resign. WHAT IS IT GOING TO TAKE TO WAKE UP AMERICA????

  • Common_Cents

obama did not know? I think he did. Obama has supported every arab spring that involved muslim brotherhood. Coincidence? Why didn’t he support the Iranian protests? Iranian people are pro western, most likely to have a legit form of democracy. Obama did not support that.

  • Common_Cents

yep, clear the slate, foreign aid goes to zero annually and each country must apply for it on a yearly basis. Zero based foreign aid.

  • rkinroanoke

It has been long-standing Israeli policy that they don’t, not ever, negotiate with terrorists. They essentially consider hostages to be casualties of war and will then take appropriate action.
If they did negotiate over hostages, Israeli citizens would be taken hostage frequently. It doesn’t happen much.

  • Common_Cents

Obama’s FAUXREIGN policy is exposed. Leading from behind gets people killed. And to think the media narrative of late is trying to paint obama as some Fauxreign policy master. It’s all the fantasy they have left since Obama has proven to be domestically dangerous and incompetent.

  • mkj350

Sometimes, all that’s left is to cry.

  • mkj350

He will go down in history as the president that lost the Middle East.

  • noveldog9

The only folks who like the President’s position is our enemies, the Muslims, the terrorist, his supporters, and our biased liberal news media who should be on our most dangerous enemies list.
The answer is much prayer to God and solid unyielding support for Mitt Romney and the GOP from now to November and beyond! We need to unite and truly be one for all, and all for one. With unity we can defeat this beast and his curmudgeons and demons who have come to destroy us.

  • noveldog9

Muslim don’t atack other Muslims unless it is to further some personal goal. If BHO is not a Muslim then let him prove otherwise!

  • cwfoster

At this point, I fear it already will never be the same. I doubt there’s more than a few million (if that many) who remember what a functioning Republic looked like. (They would have to predate FDR! Maybe Woodrow Wilson!)

  • streiff

really amateur attempt at trolling. Not convincing. The key to good trolling is to not strip buck naked, paint yourself day-glo orange, stand in the middle of the interstate and scream “look at me.”

  • PowerToThePeople

Do what? Did you read your comment prior to hitting enter?

You state that Muslims do not attack other Muslims unless it is to further some personal goal, have you kept up with world events over the last even 20 years? Muslims have sects and each sect hates every other sect. They attack and kill each other over everything and nothing at all.

Your comment was really stupid bub, really, really stupid.

  • tnfriendofcoal101368

Actually, Morsi told him that he would protect the embassy if Obama would crack down on blasphemers. That’s right folks, the President of Egypt basically told the President of the United States that he would ensure the safety of America diplomats in his country if and only if Barack Obama persecuted Americans for exercising their constitutionally guaranteed rights. Anyone want to guess how Dick Cheney would have responded to that? Probably something along the lines of…
Cheney: Who is the Egyptian Vice President
    Morsi: Why?
Cheney: because he is about to get a promotion
    Drone strike wipes out Morsi.

  • gbenton

    Dead on.

  • celador2

Incredible. what rationale do Democrats like Pelosi and Obama give for giving aid to Libya and Egypt?
No aid if US comes under attack. period.

  • celador2

Carter spoke today on a panel with Roselyn and said that Obama should not use military force. Carter did help that peace treaty and I appreciate all the work that has gone to keeping Camp David alive over the years. Those open borders make for a better region. Its the holy land and more. Anyone who goes there comes out a better person. Dense in history and activities I want to go before I die.
Keep Camp David alive and open to all travelers. Its more than a peace treaty, its the holyland road map and is the center of faith and civilization..
