US Intelligence Suffers Major Compromise in Libya

The sheer incompetence of our State Department and the Obama administration is once again being trotted out for the world to see.

The tip of the iceberg was exposed last week when CNN reported on the journal of slain US Ambassador Christopher Stevens that one of its news crews had recovered from the smoking rubble of the former US consulate in Benghazi. One had to wonder what possessed a US ambassador to carry a paper journal outside the US embassy in this day and age and how in the name of heaven such a document was left unattended after the attack on the consulate.

Now it appears that the “safe house” where Stevens and others were supposed to find security during the attack was a treasure trove of CIA and State Department information on efforts to recover MANPADS and the identities of local nationals who were working on our behalf.

“It’s a catastrophic intelligence loss,” said one American official who has served in Libya and who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the F.B.I. is still investigating the attack. “We got our eyes poked out.”

American intelligence operatives also assisted State Department contractors and Libyan officials in tracking shoulder-fired missiles taken from the former arsenals of the former Libyan Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi’s forces; they aided in efforts to secure Libya’s chemical weapons stockpiles; and they helped train Libya’s new intelligence service, officials said.

Senior American officials acknowledged the intelligence setback, but insisted that information was still being collected using a variety of informants on the ground, systems that intercept electronic communications like cellphone conversations and satellite imagery. “The U.S. isn’t close to being blind in Benghazi and eastern Libya,” said an American official.

Spokesmen for the C.I.A., the State Department and the White House declined to comment on the matter on Sunday.

Adding to the general aura of disarray was the rather hilarious exchange between one of Hillary’s spokestoads, the French sounding Phillipe Reines, and Buzzfeed’s Michael Hastings when Buzzfeed decided to try to commit a random act of journalism. (You really have to read the article at the link. Trust me your day won’t be complete without it.)

From the tenor of interview, it seems that not only does Mr. Reines have a problem keeping his hands to himself but there is a much larger compromise of intelligence than is currently been reported. In the midst of a slanging match over State’s unprecedented attack on CNN’s reporting, we get this gem:

I do agree that the media has lots of responsibilities, and CNN fulfilled its responsibility by returning the diary while still managing to inform the American public of newsworthy information. So it’s unfortunate that you are trying to make a scapegoat out of CNN. That State was forced to flee Benghazi–again, because of such inadequate security, leaving behind all sorts of sensitive information–tells us more about DoS than CNN.

This lies and dissimulation of this administration in the aftermath of 9/11/12 have been stunning in both their scope and amateurishness. It paints the picture of an incompetent and insular regime only now confronting the first actual questions by the previously stump-trained media and failing miserably in the process.

    Safe house?

Bet Putin and the AQ guys are having a hearty laugh that Americans regard the place in question as a safe house. Sounds more like a CIA sub-station that got compromised.

Edit: You don’t run intel operations out of a safe house. It’s a “clean” low-key place with its own cover and nothing incriminating.

  • streiff

    mistake noted.

  • Viet71

    Stevens got screwed.

He thought he could rely on local security. False.

His comrades (minus him) ran to the CIA in Benghazi.

Guess what? They (the CIA) tried to save their butts.

In Viet Nam, we fought for one another. Today, they fight for themselves.

Why is it the two “random acts of journalism” in the past week came from Univision and BuzzFeed? They put CBS, NBC, ABC and all the others to shame.

The Middle East is on fire agains the US and Obama is on the View? I’m sorry, I don’t watch those shows and confuse them with each other. I am willing to be Obama will apologize tomorrow in his UN speech. This was the most powerful country in the world and now after 3 + years of Obama we are not feared. I would rather be feared than liked, especially by our enemies.

I just hit on Fox News there is an opinion piece with the headline Hilary should resign, yes she should, along with Power and Rice. Obama should be investigated too, for dereliction of duty, he’s failed his number one duty to protect our nation.

  • tlhoward

I have to give credit to CNN on this story about the journal.

  • tlhoward

Something doesn’t make sense. Stevens was not an amateur, not at all. I can’t believe he thought he could rely on local security, knowing that groups loyal to Gaddafi still existed, knowing Al Queda has been in the area since Gaddafi’s fall.
Nope. Something is way off here, and we’ll never know what.

  • tlhoward

Obama’s m.o. on any failure he has had is to minimize it. How does he do this? He uses style. Yes, style. When a parent is really upset by something and doesn’t want his or her children to know, that parent fakes it, pretends that whatever just happened is not the end of the world, in fact, is merely a “bump in the road.” The parent’s voice, the parent’s body language, all of that is seen by the kids who then think to themselves, “Well, if Mom/Dad are not upset by that, then I guess we don’t have to worry about it.”
He has perfected that approach to every “bump” his admin has faced, including the murder of 4 Americans and the burning of the Middle EAst. Of course, how does he get away with it?
A press that doesn’t press him. Period.

And yet, they are willing to make secret backroom deals to ram Obummercare down our throats, or make secret deals to allow gun-running to the drug cartels in Mexico, or make secret deals to funnel money into so-called green energy companies that make political donations to Obummer and then go bankrupt. So, their real attitude is “it’s okay for me, but not for thee”!

  • davesinsanantonio

The lies and dissimulation of this administration are more than just a “paint” job. It is their very foundation and structure. It is what they are made of, and how they operate 24/7!

  • proudmarinemom

The Americans killed all knew Libya. None were naive about the place. You’re right. This whole thing smells like a set-up.

  • proudmarinemom

“Incompetent and insular” regime. No. There’s a lot more to this story. Obama-friendly CNN reporter walks into ground zero several days after an international terrorist attack and picks up evidence off the char-broiled floor? Obama-controlled FBI sent to investigate intelligence breach in ‘safe house’? Watch this all go away.

  • joeqsixpack

Really? “Obummer”? That has got to be the dumbest insult for Obama yet. If you want to use dim-wit puns — as you clearly do — I recommend, “Oblamea” or “O-Boned-me.” But “Obummer”? What are you, ten years old AND paranoid?

  • joeqsixpack

Anusonius, above, had a good one with “MAObama.” But “Obummer”? You really should stop commenting for a while and take a good look in the mirror. Maybe in that moment of calm, you’ll lighten up about the myriad “secret deals” that clearly haunt you so.

  • jiminga

Benghazi is the embodiment of Hillary’s description of “the 2AM phone call” that went directly to the answering machine.

  • thethinman

Americans are a herd of sheep. The shepherd is working with the wolves like he has been ever since 1981 when he was in Pakistan working with the Taliban. This stinks of collusion – how do you just turn over and go to sleep when your country is being attacked and your PERSONAL representative is being killed along with three other America Citizens – how – you don’t care – there is NO leadership for America – just a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

  • thethinman

Ever hear of Pravda – the Soviet Union OFFICIAL news media – well – that is NBC, CBS, ABC, MSNBC – they are the OFFICIAL news outlet of the Obama Socialist Democrat Party – like Pravda was OWNED by the Communist Party. and it’s not dereliction of duty – it’s malfeasance in office.

We will find out in 40 years.

  • astrolite

If you read “None Dare Call It Treason”, either version, you will see that our state department has been riddled with communists. Still! remember that Hillery is a hardcore communist, “Vencermos brigade” trained in Cuba by Castro’s regime. And her appointed second in command is a HARDCORE MUSLIM, daughter of a convicted terrorist supporter. And of course our illegal immigrant president is a closet Muslim and a lover of Marxism. Who secretly aided the “Muslim Brotherhood” in overthrowing the government in those countries, Obviously intending them to install an Islamic Radical Government. Stevens was betrayed by our own administration.

  • justperhaps45

INTELLIGENGE? The word is a distraction not a description in this case.

  • sexysadie

Investigated? No. He should be tried for high treason, tarred and feathered, and then he and the secretary of state hag, and all their other comrades should be sent to a remote island in the pacific swarming with wild pigs. Anyone who thinks this putrid menace is an American or a Christian has to be on drugs.

  • davesinsanantonio

If you don’t like me calling Obummer Obummer, may I suggest you not read my comments in the future; that might save you an apoplectic event such as heart attack or stroke. Life is too short to lose even a minute over what someone writes as a blog comment. Stay healthy, my friend.

  • Bill S

You were more polite than I would be, Dave. I would have responded: “Bite me”

  • CarolT

you are right, it is malfeasance in office. It is another reason to get rid of the fool. We’ve had enough, I don’t think we could recover if there are another four years. I went to one website, Andrea Mitchell criticized O for not meeting with world leaders today. Another had KT McFarland from FNC earlier today, she said that O did not meet with any foreign leaders because he’d had to give equal time to Romney to meet with them.
That makes much more sense, Romney looks like a POTUS, O looks like fool.
