Joe Biden Plays Doctor. Hilarity Ensues.

America’s Rain Man, Joe Biden, made a campaign appearance in Florida last week. During the appearance Biden promised that Obamacare would provide free colonoscopies to all comers.

“Everyone knows, everyone in this room knows that President Obama has increased the benefits available to people on Medicare by the action he took,” Biden said. “You are now able to go get a wellness exam, and guys, if you conclude you need a colonoscopy because of the feeling you had or you need a breast health examination, you don’t have to pay a co-pay for that.”

According to recent studies, the colonoscopy is one of the most overused procedures covered under Medicare:

“The natural history of polyps going to cancer is incredibly slow — like 20 years,” said Dr. James S. Goodwin, the George & Cynthia Mitchell Distinguished Chair in Geriatric Medicine and director of the Sealy Center on Aging at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston and lead researcher on the first study.

That is why the recommendation, for most people, is a colonoscopy screening every 10 years, he said. “Colonoscopy is not benign. One of every 1,000 people winds up in the hospital because of a complication,” Goodwin noted.

There are a number of reasons for the overuse of colonoscopy, Goodwin said. “There is the profit motive — the person recommending the colonoscopy is the person being reimbursed for it,” he said.

Also, the benefit of colonoscopy in reducing colon cancer has made some think that more screening is better, he said. Medicare needs to stop reimbursing doctors for too frequent colonoscopies, Goodwin said.

In 2008, the US Preventive Services Task Force concluded that for persons over 50, without certain specific risk factors, had a greater chance of injury from a colonoscopy that detecting cancer.

In a way, this extraordinary promise, that you can get a colonoscopy for free based on a “feeling you had” is a metaphor for the travesty that the Obama regime has inflicted upon the nation in the name of making better medical care available to anyone. It has taken a marginally useful procedure and made it available to anyone based on their whim, not medical necessity. And the taxpayer picks up the tab. This, in turn, balloons the cost of Medicare, makes it more expensive, and drives up that portion of the federal budget.

While I’m sure The Rain Man assumed that this was an appealing benefit of Medicare, he actually succeeded in demonstrating both why he should not be practicing medicine and the worst feature of Medicare.

Good grief! What a goofball this guy is.

I have a “feeling” that the Obama Administration has become a major pain in the ass.

    Can I get a colonoscopy?

  • jaykali

    This will be ignored…

  • fightnright

wow, tossing out ‘free’ colonoscopies and what a crowd-pleaser – just look at that pack of fools cheer! If Joe offered this mob government-paid root canals or rabies shots on a preemptive basis, he’d probably bring the house down.

ps, I wouldn’t go trick-or-treating at the White House or the Biden’s place this year, you never know what you’re gonna get….

Biden has certainly garnered his share of laughs recently. But to be fair, this season’s crop of sitcoms aren’t all that good. So, in comparison, Biden can command a chuckle almost daily. I might take him up on it, if he’ll supersize it and give me large fries and soft drink. (Suck it NYC! That’s a large drink!)

Biden is wrong about this one, streiff, and the public needs to be aware of it, too. Here are the medical necessity requirements that would allow a physician to order a colonscopy and for Medicare to pay for it.

    https://www.healthnet.com/static/general/unprotected/pdfs/national/policies/Colonoscopy_Apr_11.pdf

If the patient pushes the issue, the doctor can order it. But if the requirements for medical necessity are not met, the patient will be asked to sign an Advance Beneficiary Notice (ABN) form stating that the patient realizes that Medicare may not pay for the services and that the patient accepts full responsibility for payment.

Under Obamacare, DHHS and CMS are moving medical necessity in a direction that can be associated with rationing of services, not over-abundance of services.

In any case, I doubt the use of coverage with no hospitals or doctors.

There’s no one outside of the medical community that knows more about blowing air up people’s asses than this guy.

  • jamesm

A late night comedian!! Air huh? Guess Biden doesn’t smoke. :)

  • gafisher

Grab your ankles — the Obamanoscopy comes on January 1st.

  • rickbillies

I think that we can thank celebrities like Katie Couric for the colonoscopy demand.

When people don’t care about the costs, and the government doesn’t care about the care, you have an unfundable health care time bomb. Think about it this way, suppose the government “calculated” that the average family spends $600 a month on food. So each family is “taxed’ $7,200 a year. Of course, no charge for for the folks who don’t pay for food now or “can’t afford” the $7,200. AND… all the people can shop for food anywhere, and buy however much, of whatever brands they choose.

  • ihateliberals

So many people that i have talked to really think they are gong to get Free Medical Care! They have no clue that hey have to buy insurance. They believe in Obama 100%. These are really scary people and there are so many of them!

  • celador2

The appointed panel IPAB will run Medicare and is not subject to oversight. A 15 person panel not yet named controls costs and regulates treatments top down from DC for seniors.
    So says ACA or Obamacare.
    NO THANKS.
One more reason for ALL to vote Romney – Ryan 2012

Why would anyone capable of rational thought listen to, or consider intelligent, anything This Proven Moron has to utter? The only souls listening and ‘believing’ are no ‘smarterer’ than He is . This is what ‘leadership’ comes down to, when the intelligence level of so many does not get near room temperature levels.
…and could it be anymore metaphorical than Joe ,waxing wise on Government-Funded, specially permissioned, invasions of your alimentary canal?
Was this speechifying given at a comedy club?

  • tnfriendofcoal101368

I see Joe Biden has a heck of a future playing a doctor on a tv sitcom; on November 6th, why don’t we just give him that opportunity? Obviously, he’d be a lot happier.

  • tnfriendofcoal101368

I would say that at least Ted Knight was a competent comedian…I’d say he is actually closer to Ted Baxter, an incompetent Ted Knight played on tv for laughs…

  • streiff

you are right and that is what I meant. Mercifully I never watched the Mary Tyler Moore show and missed the reference to the comedian and his character.

  • Duke

I actually know of 2 men, both over 50, who had punctured colons from the subject test. They both ended up with colostomies. It looks to me like the Democrat’s Gaffosaurus, “…isn’t a real doctor, but plays one on TV.”

I think attempting to deliver the mail is about as close as I want my government to get to my tailpipe.

  • justperhaps45

A nice stretching colon exam is preparation for our future under Obamacare. It is a proceedure that only a Sodomite could enjoy.

  • rightlane1111

To follow on these comments…if this administration cared so much about women…why are mammograms being cut off at the age of 74? Hey…say it isn’t so…Joe. Ha. I hope that the people of Florida get some REAL news about this administration instead of a pack of lies.

Those pictures were the most truthful she ever had taken

Even scarier–for a long time Nancy was only two steps

Only because it is hard to lobotomize an empty space…

  • http://www4.webng.com/rickbull/lostlucky/ rickbull

I think a lobotomy is a good portion of the reason he says some of the stupid (shall we sanitize by saying caca) things he does. The procedure I spoke of was the removal of his vocal cords.

  • Go_USA2012

Actually, we will have to wait the end of January 2013. Too bad.

  • LiberalBoycotter

I tell anyone over 60 that they will have the death panel give them the option of which pain pill they will get as their healthcare. Many of the over 60 crowd, think that I am making up crap because I am a staunch conservative, and I want to see Romney become the next POTUS. I keep telling these people they need to get on the internet and find out for themselves.

Elect Romney/Ryan, so we can get rid of Obamacare. I pray the people of this great nation will wake up to the hatred of the Liberals, who pretend they love and want to help everyone under the guise of government is good for everyone, and we all need it.

  • willhen50

Free colonoscopy, but if you have cancer, over 60 and not physically fit then a panel of bureaucrats will determine if you live or die.

  • willhen50

It is amazing how clueless our politicians are about a bill they, didn’t read, don’t understand, and do not campaign on. The irony is they, along with the unions, liberal owned companies, and a select few can opt out. Congress needs a reboot.
