Obama Wins Debate And It Shows In The Polls

The left was delirious. After Obama had lied and blustered his way through the debate with Mitt Romney Tuesday night they were sure he had turned it around.

From the often wrong, never in doubt Greg Sargent:

A very different President Obama showed up to tonight’s debate than the one who got trounced by Mitt Romney two weeks ago. Obama absolutely had to turn in a performance that would make his base happy — and he did that, by demonstrating a willingness to get in Mitt Romney’s face and in his space, and by not flinching from calling out Romney’s lies. Will Obama’s performance appeal to independents, swing, and undecided voters?

Yes, it will. The race will not be transformed in a fundamental way — it will still be a dead heat — but Obama accomplished something of a turnaround tonight. He took steps towards undoing the damaging dynamic

From Eugene Robinson, the Washington Post columnist who won the Pulitzer Prize as the stupidest political writer in the country:

Not a close call. President Obama won the second presidential debate as clearly and decisively as he lost the first. For anyone who disagrees, three simple words: “Please proceed, Governor.”

And no survey would be complete without quoting Bob Schrum, who famously asked John Kerry if he could be the first person to call him Mr. President and seemed to be trying to do the same for Obama in 2012:

That about sums up a debate which was a demographic, substantive, and stylistic train-wreck for Romney—and a masterful comeback for the once and future President Obama.

The verdict is in and Captain Kickass rose to the task.

Today’s Rasmussen Poll, which includes one day of post-debate data, gives Romney a 49-47 lead. Yesterday, like Tuesday, it was 49-48 in favor of Romney.

Today’s Gallup Poll has Romney holding a 52-45 lead over Obama. This is a seven day average that includes one day of post-debate data. On the day of the debate Romney led 50-46.

So the stellar debate performance that set Chris Matthews all a-tingling again at best moved both Rasmussen and Gallup in Romney’s direction.

This is getting comical. Not only is the O’s bubble popping, the propaganda press’s bubble is imploding, too, and they all look like a bunch of fools fooling themselves with all their foolishness.

You’re missing the biggest jump, where Romney bounced 4 points in the Rasmussen swing state tracking poll (from down 47/50 to up 49/48). That is an incredible jump for a 7-day poll.

  • rednewjersey2012

I predict after Monday’s debate, Romney’s numbers will jump even higher, and the President will look like a wet, scared dog with his tail between his legs.

Ordinary Americans, such as Viet71, see the debaters differently from the pundits. The pundits keep a score. Ordinary Americans think — “what a jerk” or “yawn” or “more of the same” or “that’s refreshing.”

No surprise here about the polls. Obama offers nothing of substance. Romney reveals himself to be a reasonable choice for change.

And thanks to Schrum for defining in every conceivable way, the term “flaming liberal”. No it was not a trainwreck for Romney. He pretty much was the same as he was the last debate. Its just your guy flatlined first time out, and it made Romney who practiced and stayed on point, look incredible. And yes, the left was delirious. They still are, in more ways than one.

I heard Rush bring up Rasmussen’s Wisconsin and Ohio polls today that show O +1 in each, but Rush said the internals really looked bad for Obama. He never mentioned what they were…can someone shed light on this? Also, Rush mentioned that for perspective, in 2008 Obama beat McCain in Broward and Palm Beach Counties by 62-38 margins; now, he said that Obama is up ONLY +4. He didn’t mention a poll.

“Not a close call. President Obama won the second presidential debate as clearly and decisively as he lost the first. For anyone who disagrees, three simple words: “Please proceed, Governor.””

wow, I’m shocked that even a dull leftist tool would choose to focus on O’s repetition of that statement as an example of winning a debate effectively.

To anyone accustomed to having to carefully parse all Democrat statements for logic and accuracy, ‘Please proceed’ in answer to Mitt’s direct inquiries was boilerplate plug-in intended to prevent the President from having to actually say ‘I refuse to answer your question, Governor, as it might tend to incriminate me.’

Assuming Romney doesn’t show up to Monday’s debate in a Big Bird costume, this election is over. Anytime an incumbent is even or down this close to election day it is death, but being down as much as Obama is very close to impossible to come back from. Unless they have a video of Romney pulling wings off a butterfly while laughing manically, this train has left the station.

  • mindthegap76

Agree. In my view, the story of this election is Obama spending millions of dollars through September to build up a straw man version of Romney. I don’t think Romney is picking up so much momentum now because he “won” the first debate, but because he totally destroyed the boogey-man version of himself that appeared in Obama’s ad campaign. No matter who you think won the second debate, I don’t think anything happened to change that narrative. So with no way to continue tarring Romney, and no positive record from a first term or vision for the second term, the chickens are increasingly coming home to roost on the empty shell that is Barack Obama’s campaign and presidency.

American Thinker has a couple of very good analyses of this episode today. At the time it seemed to me as if Obama’s “please proceed” was an indication that he thought the hammer was about to fall and he’d get caught, so he either wanted to get it over with, show some bravado, or, as you say, avoid ‘pleading the 5th’. But some people think it was in anticipation of the ‘transcript’ which he somehow knew Crowley had handy. It was amazing because suddenly the debate had turned into a courtroom drama.

Should be interesting to see the Wisconsin polls over the next few days… Thompson and Baldwin are debating right now and this is an even bigger landslide for Thompson than Romney vs Obama round 1. Baldwin is coming off as the biggest joke I’ve ever seen in my life and Thompson is schooling her on every single issue.

Hi Barley, it’s several days later…and I still can’t seem to grab hold of that feeling you are expressing here. The Dems have an October surprise coming up, probably tonight or Friday afternoon that will destroy the momentum R/R have – that’s the feeling I have in the pit of my stomach. I want to feel like, yes, we’ve got him in but just not there. This October surpise is going to be one that gets the Liberals so riled up they actually go and vote. Not saying it is going to be remotely true but they are above nothing and well, beneath some pretty outright lying. Mr. emptybucket keeps reminding me of that snake lying under a rock! Guess I am remembering just how dirty Chicago politics are. If our side assumes a win and doesn’t bother to vote as a result we are in trouble.
