Mitt’s comment might have been one of the more prophetic remarks of this campaign.

I am in almost daily contact with examples of the abusers of the “safety net” system and I can vouch for the fact that they will NEVER voluntarily allow themselves to be weaned off of it. I believe that the beginning steps needed to curb this dependency will result in outright physical violence in society, a huge increase in those recipients attempting to take from earners by force what once the government forced the earners to surrender, and that the Democrat Party will, at every turn, overtly and covertly support such reaction. The trial balloon was floated with OWS and we saw the outright Democrat support for their criminal acts. With the election of Mitt Romney we will see the opening salvos of this battle and we had better now decide as earners that we will not be defeated by the leeches and the Democrats. Our worst enemy is our failure to perceive the deep greed of the takers, their rabid belief that they deserve that which they have not earned, and our faith in the goodness of our fellowman. If the Democrats have not convinced us yet of their perfidy in basing their election on the earnings of the productive, we may be beyond convincing; at least the element of society which is not conservative at heart. This fight will be long and hard and will require giant efforts at the ballot box in every election, constant observation of those we elect to insure they constantly support the conservative cause, and a commitment on our parts to do the hard things that will come as we try to turn the ship of the American Dream back on course. It will seem like we are using an oar for this task at first but in time, with persistence and resolve, it can happen.

The 47% number is a cute coincidence with the recent polls, but you are way over simplifying the reality. In the 2008 election the $100k income people were evenly split between Obama and McCain (Roper). I was an Obama voter and millions of us make a good living, pay our taxes, and don’t rely on government handouts. So I guess I am “incorrigibly out of touch with American values?” C’mon. Plenty of decent people will vote for Obama. And yes, when my progressive friends start with the “All GOP voters are closed-minded, heartless bigots” BS, I tell them to shut up too.
