EDITOR OF REDSTATE

50,000 Feet Looking Down

I believe Mitt Romney will win on election day. I’m somewhat stunned to be writing that as I never really thought he could win until about the moment Clint Eastwood trotted out on stage at the Republican National Convention with that empty chair. Even now I waver by the hour, but if forced to predict, I think Romney wins Florida, North Carolina, Virginia, Colorado, Wisconsin, and even Ohio. I put the Electoral College at 285 to 253. Ask me tomorrow, though, and I could decide otherwise. I cast my absentee ballot last week and voted for Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan.

I write the rest of this now because if Romney loses, it will be viewed as “Erickson is trying to talk them off the ledge” and if Romney wins it will be viewed as “Erickson is rubbing salt in wounds.” Neither is true, which is why this must come before the election and not after.

I get the enormity of what is at stake in the election. I get it. I really do. I get the passion. I get the excitement. But, and maybe I’m just too worn out, I don’t get the anger, worry, and dread on either side. I have friends upset with me for not getting it and for not sharing it. “Don’t you know what is at stake?” they demand.

Don’t you know what is not at stake?

People on the left are convinced if Mitt Romney wins blacks will be put in chains out in cotton fields and uteruses will be locked up.

People on the right are convinced if Barack Obama wins the stars and stripes will come down, the red banner of communism will go up, and this American experiment will be promptly concluded.

My world view is pretty simple. I think this world is destined to go to hell in a hand basket by design. I think things are supposed to go to pot. So if Barack Obama wins, I won’t be upset. If Mitt Romney wins, I won’t be running through the streets cheering. I think, either way, it is all part of the design. The world is going down hill. Barack Obama re-elected just gets us down the slippery slope faster in my view. For others, it is Mitt Romney who does.

God is sovereign and He is in charge and He will return. That is my hope and my ever present expectation.

We often get so wrapped up in the view of things at ground level, we forget to look at the world from 50,000 feet. In the historic, grand scheme of things, this too will end.

Don’t confuse me with a fatalist and don’t confuse me with someone who does not really care about the future of our nation. I think we are the last best hope of mankind on this planet. But my destiny is not tied to this planet. While I am here, however, I have convictions that are greater than either candidate and either party and I fight more for a cause than a candidate. I expect, regardless of who is in the White House, I’ll find myself at odds with them, though more so with Obama than Romney.

When I wake up on Wednesday morning, I’m still going to have my wife. I’m still going to have my kids. I’m still going to have my family. And I’m still going to have my God. So will you.

Some of you, on both sides, are convinced that the end of the world is nigh. It is. But not quite yet and no one really knows when.

What I do know for sure is that I’m headed home to eternity and this world is temporary. So while I like politics and have my side and want it to win, I’m not going to be partying in the street if my side does win and I’m not going to think the end of the world is upon us if my side loses.

You should not either.

Too many of my friends have gotten so focused on the outcome and are so convinced the country as they know it is over if the other side wins that they are joyless to be around right now. They are full of dread and worry and fear. They’ve lost their sense of humor. They cannot laugh at themselves, their side, or much of anything. They are mad at others, myself included, for not being as worked up as they are. The frenzy has become a purity test, not the conviction.

God is sovereign. And whether you are for Barack Obama or Mitt Romney, set your sights on God, not November 6th, and be happy. In four years, we really will do this all over again whether right now you think so or not. There is no permanence except in Heaven.

These all died in faith, not having received the things promised, but having seen them and greeted them from afar, and having acknowledged that they were strangers and exiles on the earth. For people who speak thus make it clear that they are seeking a homeland. If they had been thinking of that land from which they had gone out, they would have had opportunity to return. But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared for them a city.

— Hebrews 11:13-16 (ESV)

Now go vote! The future of the nation is at stake!!!!

I agree with the sentiments, Erick. But the theology is a bit flawed. :P God’s project isn’t to send Christians off to Heaven while he torches the creation. God’s big project is to bring about the renewal of the entire creation, governed by the truly human one, Jesus Christ, and the truly human family that God has created in Christ.

(Romans 8:17-23) And if children, then heirs–heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him. For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to decay and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.

Just for contrast’s sake and some perspective of your own view(s), you might learn something about yourself by going back and reading your posts in the run up to the primaries and through them.

While your faith guides you to see all temporal concerns as fleeting (Of course, who can argue with that? Life is indeed short, and I’ve not met even one in his mid 90s who didn’t feel it was too soon to go as we are hard wired to fight for life, not death), yet I do know (and so do you) that history is littered with tipping points, both for good and ill, and it’s not correct to conclude that all will go on as before as we wait to die.
    Erik, you need a rest.

    Amen, Erick!

Hey I got an idea! Lets all work together, the left and the right, to make America the best that it can be. :)

  • ajdx3

I feel ya, but now is not the time to be waxing poetic. We can all Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition. We’ve got an election to win people.

  • ajdx3

Sure thing, right after the election and we elect President Romney.

  • tlhoward

    Kids, grandkids, yes, yes.

  • rkinroanoke

Perspective is a wonderful thing. And, while yes, I will still have my wife and daughter if O should win; I will worry more about the world I leave my daughter.

This great experiment that is America is not preordained by God to succeed forever. Does God care who wins this election, probably not.

But I care because I live in the here and now. I believe that this country is on a terrible path where many just want the govt to take care of them. As humankind I cannot believe that is why we are here; to relax and be taken care of. I believe that we are meant to strive to be the best humans we can be, each of us individually. And if we each do that, then the overall society will be healthy.

So yes, perspective is good. And while Tuesday is not the be all end all, it is very important.
    Prayer is always good.

    EXACTLY RIGHT!

  • Melody Warbington

I agree with you ‘curmudgeon. I might feel a little differently were it just me, but it isn’t. As you point out, it is our children and grandchildren who will be affected by the decisions we make today and on Nov. 6th.

Yes, we will still have our families and our faith on Nov. 7th, but history teaches us that things can get much worse if we sit by and do nothing. And as for the folks I know who are working to win, we’re happy warriors.

  • gunnyg2002

    Erick,

I see your point and normally I would agree with you BUT the Left doesn’t WANT a prosperous America. They want a European-style Nanny State. Obama and Hillary and
Bubba Clinton are one-worlders and want us just another same-old same-old nation, no different than Zimbabwe or Mexico or Spain.

I, however, want and demand American exceptionalism because having set foot on five of out seven continents, I can attest to the fact that the AMERICAN WAY is the best way and I want that for my kids, my future grandkids, and their kids.

The Progressives and Statists have worked to undermine this nation, from gnawing away at the Constitution to trying to get rid of the Electoral College. There is NO half-stepping with these people, they must be crushed.

As for Obama, he has voided and bypassed the Constitution so many times that IF and I mean IF he is reelected, he’ll be more flexible for Putin and simply ignore the Constitution and the laws of the land. Indeed, he murdered four Americans in Benghazi through inaction and it is barely being covered.

    NO QUARTER in this election.

  • tlhoward

No, californiasquish. The Founders didn’t create a “system.” They created a document describing a system. There are those who don’t want to listen to, don’t want to abide by the document, and there are millions of Americans who haven’t actually read the document so that those seeking to ignore it or turn it aside, can do so. That is why an educated electorate is so important and we have increasingly become an ignorant one.

  • fredrickm

Way to put things in perspective, Erick. Though we must be responsible stewards of what God has given us, we so often forget that He is in control. I’ve read the end of the story, and the “good guys” win.

    Amazing, powerful words!!

  • http://www.bohnetlaw.com rightappeal

Thank you very much Erick, I have been thinking very much along the same lines. As Christians, we know the view from 50,000 feet is always pretty much the same – Heaven on the horizon and lots of bad stuff happening down below. And if God really wants something to happen, it will.

But we in America have been blessed far beyond what most people who have walked this earth could possibly imagine. The peace, prosperity, and freedom we have enjoyed since 1945 and even since 1865 have been incredible. I want very much to live out my life in this dreamland, and for my children and grandchildren to have the chance to do the same. But the institutions and principles that have provided for this near utopia have been eroding and are under heavy assault and appear to be near the breaking point. If Obamacare is implemented, it will be extremely difficult to regain the free and prosperous society we have grown to love and expect. Combined with our other problems, I fear greatly that we will soon be thrust into the permanent state of poverty, warfare and slavery that has plagued most human societies. Electing Romney will not end the crisis, but perhaps it will allow us to survive the immediate dangers and extend the dream of America for another generation.

I do not know whether it is God’s plan to save this nation as it has been or not. But I do think He wants me to do what I can to try to save it.

  • WA_Cowboy

a little perspective is nice, isn’t it.
“it is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes” – Psalm 118:9

  • swelborn

Bravo Eric! I love your perspective. However as strong as my Christian faith is, and I too know I am an eternal being just visiting here, I am also a husband and a father. I have four children and six grand children. If I do not get serious about defeating a real threat to their future, like Barrack Obama, can I call myself a good father? See I think Christ calls me to be real serious about this world, not trumping His work but very important to protect our values here, and to protect those I am responsible for in this life. But the real truth is no matter what I do God is always in charge, whether I like His plans or not, whether I yield to Him or not. The elections will fall to what He wants for us, and to confirm His plans for us. I just pray He allows America to turn away from the destruction of Obama and back to the very best of our promise as the only real freedom loving democracy. I pray He will give us another chance to do this right. God bless you Eric for your leadership efforts in the Conservative pathway of this life.

“People on the left are convinced if Mitt Romney wins blacks will be
put in chains out in cotton fields and uteruses will be locked up.”

“People on the right are convinced if Barack Obama wins the stars and
stripes will come down, the red banner of communism will go up, and this
American experiment will be promptly concluded.”

These are exaggerated fears and while I don’t believe the stars and stripes will come down nor that the red banner will go up if Obama wins, he is a miserable leader for this God-fearing, law-honoring conservative to live under. He lies incessantly, abuses his power continually and cannot be trusted in any way. And that is the reality we will live with for four more years — no matter how strong our faith in God is or how much we know the world is going to hell in a hand basket. And I think that is why people on our side are so cranky when they ponder four more years of this madman.

There’s a proverb that says, “When the wicked rule, the people groan.” I’m real tired of groaning. I still believe America is strong enough to withstand four more years of Obama, but it sure would be nice if we send him packing.

You’re absolutely right, it’s in God’s hands now. And fortunately, just this once he’s written us a reply to spell things out: http://www.uwgb.edu/dutchs/PSEUDOSC/God-2012.HTM

Sure thing. We welcome converts like Ronald Reagan, John Stossel, and Moe Lane.

Hey, Neil, did you read the letter on the website? I love these liberal eggheads who live in ivory towers and think that they know the mind of God, and can write a reply to a prayer. I had to bite my hand to stop laughing.

  • PowerToThePeople

You do? Oh my gosh, he trust science hence he must be worthy to lead this nation.

Does your mom and dad call you dumbass on a regular basis? I know everyone else does.

Whenever mankind has been spared the full blame and full consequences of mental failures, it guarantees those same failures will repeat…over and over and over again.”Too Big to Fail” is an example of that. “I didn’t really fail…it’s was God’s Will playing out!” is an another example of that. Every participant gets a Gold Medal….there is no such thing as “losing” is another example of Special Olympics Awards/Excuses being applied to all adults. Wish I could excuse myself for all my mental failures. My NOT excusing my mental failures is how I’ve learned to NOT repeat past failures.
