New Black Panthers Up To Old Tricks?

Fox News is reporting this morning that the New Black Panthers have made another appearance at the polls in Pennsylvania.  You may recall that they made an appearance in 2008 and were upset that someone brought a camera to a billy club fight.

Now they’re back, albeit a little sunnier this time and sans weaponry.  The marked change in appearance is enough to make one think that poll watching with cameras actually works.

Unconfirmed reports from Fox and on Twitchy is that retired Navy Seals are heading to PA and OH to guard against voter intimidation.

still, the visual of a uniformed Black Panther presence with its implied authority in front of a polling place can be a powerful symbol when spread through the media.

It’s appropriate to have symbols like the American flag in front of courtrooms and schools, or religious symbols in front of faith based classrooms, but on principle and in practice I’d lament the acceptance of a recurrent image of a militant group with an historical agenda of hatred and bigotry being associated with US elections.

Even the Southern Poverty Law Center, one of the most left-leaning organizations out there says this: “The New Black Panther Party is a virulently racist and anti-Semitic organization
whose leaders have encouraged violence against whites, Jews and law enforcement
officers. ” They go on to quote a number of their leaders over the years. Mr/Ms gunnarthor, these are not just ordinary citizens regardless of race, these are observably violent activists, even if they show up with smiles and no billy-clubs today.
