We Need a Choice, Not and Echo

Some things just never change.  Back in 1976, President Ford ran for president against Jimmy Carter on a pale-pastel platform that was indistinguishable from the Democrats.  In fact, based upon the demographics of the electoral map, many conservatives voted for Jimmy Carter.

During the wilderness years of the Ford administration, Reagan issued an ominous warning about the direction of the party.  Our people look for a cause to believe in. Is it a third party we need, or is it a new and revitalized second party, raising a banner of no pale pastels, but bold colors which make it unmistakably clear where we stand on all of the issues troubling the people?”

Reagan resoundingly answered his question 4 years later when he became the 40th president.  Yet, despite his successful 8 years in office, we have moved backwards instead of building upon his success.  Now we find ourselves on the cusp of abrogating every rationale that justifies the existence of the Republican Party.  Every elected GOP leader is prepared to offer the Democrats a permanent illegal immigrant voting majority without exacting steep concessions for such a drastic capitulation.  They are prepared to raise taxes without a parallel agreement to cut government and close down agencies.  They are prepared to throw social issues under the bus.  Oh wait, they have already done that.  Most importantly, they are prepared to wave the white flag on Obamacare – the worst program ever created.

At some point, we must begin to question the motivations of the current crop of GOP leaders.  What is the purpose of seeking power for power’s sake, if we have no intention of fighting back against the radical policies of the left?  How in the world are we going to change hearts and minds of swing voters (or even minority voters) by endorsing all of Obama’s policies, albeit with a sour face?

Yet, Boehner and his merry band of unprincipled career politicians are committed to banishing conservatives from their ranks.  As we noted earlier, over the past few years the #4 leadership position was typically reserved for the former RSC chairman.  However, Boehner and the boys moved heaven and earth to ensure that one of their acolytes beat out Tom Price for the position of Conference Chair.  It wouldn’t have taken much on their part to throw us that bone; they would have still had full control over the legislative agenda.  Unfortunately, we are at a place within the party that not only do we not control the supposedly-conservative party, we are not afforded a single seat at the table.  We saw the same thing last year in the Senate, when Ron Johnson, a man who serves as the bridge between conservatives and the establishment, was denied the #5 leadership post.  We are seeing the same thing with leadership attempting to take over the Republican Study Committee.

This malevolent treatment of conservatives cannot stand.  We will never restore our Constitutional Republic unless we first retake the Republican Party.  When it comes to bread and butter issues, Americans need a choice, not a faint echo from the Republican Party.

The amazing thing is that we are fully capable of commandeering the party.  While the pale-pastel crowd controls all the levers of power, conservatives control the grassroots.  When is the last time you found an activist who is resigned to Obamacare manning the phone banks?

Headed into 2014, there will be much focus on the Senate races and whether Republicans can take back control of the Senate.  While it is definitely vital to wrest control of the Senate from Harry Reid, especially for the purpose of blocking bad judges, it is important to remember that the pursuit of 218 conservatives in the House (or even less) is more important than trying to win 51 seats in the Senate.  The majority has full control over the House, and it is in that body where we will ultimately make our stand for liberty.  Moreover, due to redistricting and Democrat-support being limited to urban areas, we are in a good position to build a near-permanent majority in the House.  It’s time we use our conservative districts to elect conservative members.

Unlike high-profile Senate races, low-turnout House primaries during the midterm elections will provide us with an opportunity to overpower Boehner and grow our majority within the House Republican Conference.  If we channel all our energy, frustration, and fears into electing conservatives in House primaries in conservative parts of the country, we will eventually assume control over important committee and leadership positions within the House.

We must begin working towards that goal now.  A new cadre of conservative House members will dilute the echo chamber of big government statism on both sides of both houses of Congress.

Are you game?  If you are an aspiring candidate or conservative activist in a Republican-leaning district, please email me at Daniel@madisonproject.com with any tips and insights on the 2014 landscape in your neck of this great Republic.

Agree!! Lets screen them though. We don’t need any more fools in our party! (Akin/Mourdock)

In the interim, we can all get our own GOP Congressmen on record — in writing — with their positions on defunding Obamacare, disbanding federal departments, preserving a strong national defense, cutting entitlements, and such.

The quickest way to do that: mail postcards to them, each with one specific question on it. E-mails get ignored, phone calls get ignored, and letters in envelopes get held up in anthrax screening. Postcards sail right through, and Congressmen RESPOND to constituents who take the time to write.

Then just keep their written responses on file — perhaps uploaded to Scribd.com for easy sharing — and hold them accountable in their primary elections in 2014.

I found this just yesterday (Reagan on Johnny Carson in 1975). I pray that our love of Reagan doesn’t give us rose colored glasses that cause us to not want anyone that isn’t quite perfect. I also pray that God sends such a candidate for us!

thanks for the advice about postcards

Yes, I’m game and agree that we need to take over the House leadership from the spineless, feckless, cowardly group now ‘occupying’ leadership positions but…we need to work on wresting power away from the federal government and returning it to the states.
Due to the fact that the Congress represents the entire nation it will never be the conservative body we need it to be to restore limited and constitutional government. Nor can we really expect even GOP politicians to willingly give up their power.
The most effective way to restore constitutional government is by leveraging our numerical advantages at the state level to elect strong, committed, 10th Amendment conservatives to state legislatures and governorships.
If we can control the numerically larger number of red states, those states can work collectively to sieze back power from the federal government and restore limited government by political force.
Even now the future of Obamacare is uncertain due to the defiance of just a minority of states. If ALL red states worked together to refuse Obamacare’s implementation it would fail. The EPA would fail. Much of the federal government woud be castrated if only the states took back their CONSTITUTIONAL prerogatives and told the federal government to pound sand.
You want change? Stop looking to control of the federal government as the only path to change.
The Founders gifted us with a vertically as we’ll as horizontally divided government for a reason. It’s well past time to exercise the vertical separation.
I will close by pointing out the numerous secession petitions as evidence that people are looking to their states to “save” them from the predations of the central government.
Screw Boehner, render him powerless by taking power from him and the entire establishment.

We have time to find the RIGHT voices–if we do it right. I’m actually excited for the future. We need leaders, not politicians.

I’ll look for the link later, but there is a great video of Reagan and RFK answering questions from some leftist British students in the 1960s. Reagan showed he was obviously the superior speaker AND leader.

  • http://madisonproject.com/ Daniel Horowitz

absolutely, although one could never be certain that any candidate will be bullet proof from one inarticulate gaffe or undisciplined response.

  • oldredtop

I think this is an excellent strategy, Ohiocoastie. Nail them down on their positions NOW and in early 2013, before they go into “election mode” for 2014. Then there is plenty of time to field a more conservative candidate for a primary challenge. I think better primary candidates will be easier to attract, if the “postcard positions” are made public and we show support for change. Another side benefit I see is that they just might grow a spine, if they feel their cushy DC job is threatened…either way it can be a step in the right direction…

    +1 one on the postcard idea… :-)

  • oldredtop

Would it be fun to see this idea in action! …oh the screams and howls that would be coming from DC…lol :-)

  • rkinroanoke

Democrats seem to be bullet proof from multiple gaffes; Warren got elected.

  • miikeb

The Democrats didnt throw Warren under the Bus. Mourdock got thrown under the bus. Akin was fatally wounded before he got tossed, but Mourdock got fragged by his own party.
I’m not saying that either of them were great candidates, just neither of them lied about anything.

  • General_Confusion

The Tea Party scared the H E double toothpicks out of our leadership. Interesting to see that they can act. Shame its only when the base gets “uppity” and makes the “wrong” choice of a Tea Party representative.

No doubt our leadership will do all they can to rerun the “our” liberal vs the Dems liberal experiment again in 2016 but expecting different results. Then again, if they lose they
still have the “go along, get along” alliance with the Dems so I’m sure it’s no biggee to our “leadership”.

  • Darin_H

Mourdock’s gaffe wouldn’t have been fatal in of itself, but coupled with Akin’s stupid comment it was (and combined it was a drag on the entire party).

  • Bill S

Hear, hear. Once again, rather than standing up for our own like those on the Left do, we just shoot ourselves in the foot by trying to be “noble”. Instead, we’re just stupid. Did anyone actually think about what would happen if Akin decided not to withdraw? Apparently not.

I *am* from Missouri and Akin was my representative until redistricting. He’s a solid conservative who represented my district well. He won the primary handily.

  • streiff

our policy here at RedState is to “mock and marginalize” anyone who advocates secession in a non-ironic/non-sarcastic way. http://www.redstate.com/2012/11/13/is-it-time-to-roll-up-the-welcome-mat-here/

  • sndclark

Actually sir, what was stupid was the way that people on our side reacted to Akin and then to Mourdock, such as continually calling them, or what they said, “stupid.” Have you ever run for anything in your life? Have you had to face the pressures of an election where you are awake for 20+ hours a day, day after day. All while constantly smiling and trying to say exactly the right thing all the time. And the leftist media is ALWAYS there like a panther ready to pounce. If you are tired (Akin was ambushed by a reporter late at night after a long day) you might say one thing wrong and the communist propaganda machine is ready to pounce.

What Akin said is actually correct. He used one word poorly. He should have said “forcible rape” (the legal term) instead of legitimate. And for that he was crucified. What really terrified the left (and their allies at Planned Parenthood) was that the truth might break through that the whole “except in the case of rape” is a farce. It is always used just to get pols on the right to leave the door open. Check out
http://www.physiciansforlife.org/ if you want to know the truth about rape and abortion.
The Republican party did itself in with its own ignorance and by attacking Akin and Mourdock with such vile nastyness.

  • sndclark

And thus the Republican Party will continue to stay in the wilderness.

  • sndclark

Sadly, like so many others on the right you know absolutely nothing about “basic human biology.” Again, I point you to the Physicians for Life website or are you too afraid to have your ignorant assumptions tested?

  • sndclark

Said in truest Alinsky form and style.

  • streiff

they are wrong. You need to get out more often.

  • streiff

somehow you’ve come the sad conclusion that what you have to say is intelligent or informative and that because you are so intelligent and informative that you can be an asshat. I can assure you that you are working under a false assumption. You need to find some other place to be stupid.

  • commonsenseobserver

Yes, and perhaps some of our new crop might get it in their heads that when people talk about “gifts” and such like, they are not trying to be divisive, they are pointing out how the Democrats are winning by being divisive, which we can either choose to descend to or rise above.

  • commonsenseobserver

I can sympathize with Mourdock, whose comments were utterly misconstrued, but not with Todd Akin, who probably deserved all of the condemnation he got from the “establishment” and none of the attention he received from the media.
