Rep. Paul Ryan: back in the fiscal wars.

I think that I can taste just the faintest touch of bitterness in this article:

When Mr. Ryan returned to Capitol Hill last week, he was met with a standing ovation from his Republican colleagues, a bear hug from Mr. Boehner and the hope from conservatives that he would hold the line on taxes and other spending.

[snip]

According to aides and others close to Mr. Ryan, he is as focused on doing the job before him as he was on winning the vice-presidential race. “We just sort of picked ourselves back up, and we are all back into our lives and jobs,” Tobin Ryan said. “And frankly, I see Paul doing the same thing.”

It always annoys the Left when people from our side indeed pick themselves up and dust themselves off. We never wallow enough in despair to suit them, honestly.

But, objectively speaking: why is this a surprise? Paul Ryan lost the VP election, sure. He also kept his seat without too much trouble. As did the Republican House caucus. And thus, as did John Boehner. I know that the Democrats were hoping to spoil Ryan for future political endeavors the way that they (arguably) did for Sarah Palin* – but that’s the sort of trick that you can only do once, and it’s been done. The guy’s still Budget Chair, and if anything Rep. Ryan’s power in Washington has increased; he’s now got a much larger national reputation and nobody’s going to blame him for the loss. So, gain for us to have Ryan back and involved in the discussions.

As to what will happen… good question. There’s a certain element of ‘shoot the hostage’ running through the internal debate on how to deal with the fiscal negotiations. A lot of people are arguing that the House should pass a bill making permanent the current tax rates, let the Senate ignore it, and thus let the Democrats own the resulting tax hikes**. There’s also a certain amount of argument (not as high up as I’d like, alas) about supporting specific tax hikes designed to poke various Democratic factions in the eye (an entertaining list of suggestions is here). And, of course, there’s a vein of debate that seems largely about cursing in advance the Republicans leadership’s (presumed) sudden but inevitable betrayal***.

In other words, it’s Monday.

*Ask me again in four years if they did. Heck, I might even say yes.

**We will now pause while people complain that the media will simply demonize us for doing that. As if they wouldn’t demonize us anyway; and as if that made a lick of difference in, say, 2010.

Be careful what you wish for, because once those hikes have stuck their camel nose under the tent, it will be onto other industries that “we” all “like”. Not a good result. Never assume the Democrats in Congress won’t eat their own. And never assume that the left and the Hollywood types wouldn’t agree to such tax policy changes.

Well, I’m sure John Kerry wouldn’t mind paying a little more.

  • GremlinJones

That person is dead. Use it while they are alive. You think Paris Hilton deserves the millions she has from her grandfather’s work? I’d rather not pay federal income taxes, thank you very much.

What one does or does not deserve is none of my business. I have no claim on the property or wealth when it was first rewarded/earned, nor do I have any claim on how it is dispensed, no matter how it is dispensed. If a person wills their estate to the most degenerate individual that has ever existed, that’s their business to do so–as it is their property.

You must be an Obama voter. In the words of Bill Engvall “Here’s your sign.”

  • reddog53

This is an absolute way to end family businesses of all kinds. We’ll be back to Willie Nelson and FarmAid concerts, family owned restaurants, construction companies and manufacturing/machine shops being liquidated to pay for this….is that the America you want? No thanks.

  • reddog53

Well, first of all, the inheritance tax never amounted to much revenue for the federal government, even when it was at 55% — around 60 to 80 Billion if my memory serves correctly — nowhere near the trillions that we need. Essentially doubling it to 90% would just guarantee that owners would liquidate assets in other ways before their death. This is just a really bad idea.

  • mtmnd

Didn’t you read what Moe wrote? “We never wallow enough in despair to suit them, honestly.” Are you trying to prove him wrong?

  • littlehouse18

Getting revenge on Paris Hilton is not worth giving up the right to control what I worked so hard for. and for protecting my family from the future impoverishment of the Socialists.

No one ran against the Speaker in his OH dist. in the primary. I am listening to several state reps from IN and TX who are apologetic for the Speaker’s outrageous behavior in past weeks and years. I called my reps office and expressed my wish for a new Speaker and suggested a few possible candidates. Going to spend money against her and the current Speaker in 2014.

Your point is well taken. Only entertain tax increases on Dim supporters. Tax all the enviro-nazi groups, teachers and other public employee unions, lobbyists, tort lawyers, Hollywood anybodys–including cosmetic surgeons, all media types, etc. Then let the Dims howl about persecution. When they do, answer that “elections have consequences–you ran on tax the rich, and that’s what we are doing.” It’s only fair that Oprah and Fat Slob Moore pay their “fair share”! How about a special tax on the ACLU?

  • davesinsanantonio

Just thought of another one. How about a fee of $100 every time someone says “racist”. That alone should solve the deficit. Make it $1000 fee and the country would be out of debt in no time–all with Demo-rat money!!!

My Mom taught me that you only lose if you quit. “Losers never win and winners never quit.” So I moped for a day or two. I did my navel gazing. Then I got mad, partly at myself for not doing more, saying more…insisting more. Now I’m determined to hold the line, lose as much ground as possible until we succeed in getting a real conservative, not just a good man, elected and a Senate majority, too. We’re conservatives because we have determination. The determination to do for ourselves, be responsible for ourselves, and choose on our own how to help others. I’m grateful Ryan kept his House seat. We need him there. And it doesn’t surprise me in the least that he’s ready to get down to work. Moe’s right, Ryan has a much bigger following now, much more credibility and “gravitas”. Yeah, I wish we’d won. Let’s get conservatism ready to run at the top of the ticket next time.

It is call reality. What is it…something we have not experienced for a long time through denial and bs.

  • mtmnd

Reality? Is it really “reality” for you to pretend to speak for “how everyday Americans feel?” Do you suppose there might be some “everyday Americans” who “feel” differently? And do we really have a “Communist in the WH?” Really?

In “reality” I am afraid you haven’t quite escaped the “denial and b.s.” yet.

Democrats have been demonizing conservatives since Bush 43 was elected so they will continue to do so. We now know the media is the new found public relations firm for Obama and the democrat party. So why worry about what these people say; just do the right thing.

  • AthenaDelphi

That’s why I wrote what I did. Family farms, ranches and businesses that stay in the family that are worked by the family should not be subjected to the death tax. The federal gov’t gets taxes from these entities each year through income taxes.

My solution is not towards those that are merely capital sitters. By this I mean – they inherit shares of GE that were bought back in 1950 at $1 and are now – through dividend reinvestment- worth $500 per share. That? Means nothing as the money is sitting there doing nothing. It needs to be sold, the taxes paid as capital gains, and then the money can be used to buy something or invested again into something else. Its the dead money that just lays there doing nothing and not getting used that needs to be addressed. IMO.

How about an earmark to assure that the taxes in the first tax bill or the spending in the first spending bill directs money to restore Medicare Advantage that seniors really like. Not only does it show that Republicans are standing up for the seniors, against the Democrat money grab, but it is a free market solution at that.

How about converting large portions of the block grants to voucher funds available directly to parents instead of states. Since most states that have voucher systems are not blue, that will hurt. Use money that could have gone to states to buy union votes to set up programs that will expand urban charter schools, non-union of course. Strike into the heart of the Democrat’s stronghold and emancipate them again this time from the slavish grip unions and Progressives have on their offspring.

First you tax people that don’t know that it can hurt, then spend it to make sure people who think we are ogres learn that Democrats are leeches.

“It always annoys the Left when people from our side indeed pick themselves up and dust themselves off. We never wallow enough in despair to suit them, honestly.”
Wallowing in despair “makes” their whole argument that we’re history. So the less we wallow, the less convincing their line of crap — to themselves and anyone else. Down? Maybe — for awhile. Out? Naah. They may kill us but they can’t beat us unless we quit.

You know…when you post something…you have to be ready for the answer. Now…have your read his book…Dreams From My Father…No? Well…start there. This is what we have for a President. His mother’s parents along with his mother are athiests…..Communists do not believe in a deity. His father is a self avowed Communist. His friends and czars are Communists. His system of government is redistribution. So…what else is on your mind. If you haven’t enough information…go look into his network of people: ayers; bernadinedohrn; billayers; carolbrowner; casssunstein; codepink; communism; cornelwest; czars; dohrn; donaldwarden; frankdavis; frankmarshalldavis; georgesoros; herbsandler; hildasolis; holdren; jarrett; jodieevans; johnsperling; larrysummers; lawrencesummers; lennoxyearwood; lloyd; maeklloyd; marionsandler; marklloyd; marx; obama; obamaczars; obamastaffers; peterlewis; ronbloom; rosabrooks; socialistintl; solis; sunstein; valeriejarrett; vanjones; veleriejarrett; waderathke; warden; yearwood

Any more you want to know about Obama…I will be glad to supply. As far as how everyday Americans feel…I did say Americans here…I did not say people who are living here without citizenship which would include many Hamas/Middle East people along with those Mexicans that use our system of government to capitalize on…on our dime. Since when are Illegals entitled to our Social Security benefits? But if one is predisposed to a “COLLECTIVE” MINDSET (say like Obama) then…this would follow.

So..concerning denial…you people have not even figured out that you need to take more in than you pay out. Fact…OUR DEFICIT and DEBT. If that is bs…then go tell that to the people that have been paying taxes and are about to get upended.

  • mtmnd

These ignorant rants are part of the “problem” not the “solution.” Get back to me if you ever want to actually deal with “reality.”
