Obama’s ‘Disaster’ Aid Package

Democrats live by the dictum “never let a good crisis go to waste.”  What better way to insert their campaign wish list into a Hurricane Sandy disaster aid bill?

To that end, Obama has submitted a $60.4 billion dollar aid request for recovery of damage from Hurricane Sandy.  His proposal is chock full of items from his campaign wish list, and will be considered before the Senate this week.

In case you were thinking that the $60 billion price tag sounds too steep, you’re not missing something.  Only $11.5 billion will go towards FEMA’s disaster relief fund.  CBO projects that 64% of the funds will not be spent until FY 2015.  The entire rationale of an emergency bill is that the aid money is desperately needed now.  The fact that much of the funds will not be spent for several years reveals this as a liberal stimulus bill.  Here are some of the items on Obama’s Santa list.

  • There are several requests for studying global warming in this bill
  • The bill requests another $9.7 billion for the National Flood Insurance Program, a 47% increase.  This is after the program has already received billions in taxpayer bailout money.
  • Other wasteful spending includes, $9 million to replace vehicles, $24.1 million to plant trees, and $32 million for Amtrak, $17 billion to the Community Development Fund, $500 million for Social Services Block Grants, $1 million for the Legal Services Corporation, and $150 million for fishery disasters as far away from the impact zone as American Samoa!

This is what happens when the federal government gets involved in every pork project throughout the country.  There is no money left for real disasters.  As the Heritage Foundation notes:

The reality is that if FEMA had conserved its resources for events such as Hurricane Sandy, it would have even more funds available in the DRF for the response and recovery from Sandy. In less than two years, FEMA has issued 353 declarations—despite the absence of major hurricanes or earthquakes (except Hurricanes Irene and Sandy). No other two-year period even comes close to this level of activity.

Obama and Reid know that this bill will never pass the House.  That’s why they plan to circumvent regular order by attaching the Sandy relief bill to H.R. 1 – the Military Construction appropriations bill, which already passed the House.  So even though the entirety of this bill is non-germane to the content of the noncontroversial bill that passed the House, it will never go back to the full House for another vote.  This will allow liberals in both parties to bypass the House rank-and-file and head straight to a conference committee.

The irony is that were Obama to get his way on raising marginal tax rates and CapGains and dividends taxes on the rich, it would bring in roughly $50 billion in revenue the first year.  That would be wiped out entirely by this aid/pork package, which is totally unpaid for.

The bottom line is that Republicans in the Senate must resist the temptation to vote for something simply because of the mellifluous sounding title placed on the top of the bill.

Kudlow is discussing this right now. Dems are such greedy pigs. They love to spend OUR money.

This is an insult to those that truly need the funds. The House should pass a bill for the $12.8B that is requested for actual relief (per Heritage.org) and send it to the Senate. Attaching this pork bill to the Military Appropriations Bill H.R. 1 is a disgrace.

Also per Heritage.org, the bill also includes $200M for HHS to spend at their sole discretion- so much for starving the fed HIXs!

The Republican party is in serious danger of turning their base into Libertarian voters by allowing things like this to pass. There is not a dime that can be spent without the approval of the House of Representatives, and if this is how they are going to act, conservatives might as well vote Libertarian.

Let me state my point again using an analogy:

You have five fingers. Those fingers were intended to do things for you that better your life. Warts take over. Just a few at first so you pay them little attention. They are small and not easily seen. Over time your neglect allows the warts to multiply to a point where your fingers are covered in warts and the warts even impede joint use. You cut a few off which makes things a bit better but some of the area where you cut warts off grow some more.

Now, do you get so frustrated you pick up a knife and cut all your fingers off? No! You just keep working on ridding them of the warts. It will take some time and you will never be rid of them all, but you can get most if you dedicate the time to doing that.

The only other option is to cut your fingers off and get prosthetic ones. That may be a short term cure, but they do not function like real ones nor do they look like real ones so you simply trade a problem for an even bigger problem.

There are many problems with the party, but at its core, it is the right party with the right ideas but it has been hijacked by warts. Getting rid of a few of the bums does not fix the problems and thinking it does is plain stupid. Until we rid ourselves of most of the bums, bad bills will continue to be passed. So we either set our minds to the task, the long hard task, or we give up. Giving up by running the the wacko libertarian party accomplishes nothing but adds our names to the list of the crazy folks. We have to keep working to rid ourselves of the warts and not stop until we do. Once the warts are gone we have to remain vigilant and make sure none pop up again. ]

Sorry, but I and most others will continue to vote conservative in the primary and republican in the general because that is the only solution right now. We will slowly rid ourselves of the warts but running to another party or not voting only gives the dems more control and more power and dems are not warts, they are advanced cancer and I would rather have warts.

When Obama is done spending this country into ruin, reducing our military to levels that won’t protect us he will signal his Arab brothers it is time to attack.
