Praying for the President This Christmas

Ligon Duncan makes some sound points though many might not like to consider them. I actually posted this way back in 2008 when Mr. Duncan originally wrote it. But this Christmas Eve I think it is worth posting again.

For those Christians who are more dismayed than overjoyed about the prospects of an Obama presidency, there should be a remembrance that as our President, Barack Obama will have God-given authority to govern us, and that we should view him as a servant of God (Rom. 13:1, 4) to whom we should be subject (Rom. 13:1, 5; 1 Pet. 2:13-14). Thus, again, we are to pray for Barack Obama (1 Tim. 2:1-2). We are to thank God for Barack Obama (1 Tim. 2:1-2). We are to respect Barack Obama (Rom. 13:7). We are to honor Barack Obama (Rom. 13:7; 1 Pet. 2:17).

For those Christians who are more overjoyed than concerned about the prospects of an Obama presidency, there should be a remembrance of our ultimate allegiance: Jesus is Lord (and thus, He, not we, decides what is right and wrong), we serve God not man, and the Lord himself has promised to establish “the distinction between the righteous and the wicked, between one who serves God and one who does not serve him” (Malachi 3:18). Thus, where our new president opposes or undermines biblical moral standards in our society, fails to uphold justice for the unborn, undermines religious liberties or condones an ethos that is hostile to the Gospel, we will pray for God’s purposes to triumph over our President’s plans and policies.

Without doubt and whatever our particular views may be, we face hard days ahead. Realistically, we must all expect to be frustrated and disappointed. Some now may feel defeated and discouraged. While others may all-too-soon find their audacious hopes unfounded and unrealized. We must all keep ever in mind that it is God who raises up leaders and nations, and it is God who pulls them down, and who judges both nations and rulers. We must not act or think like unbelievers, or as those who do not trust God.

I do pray for President Obama. I pray for his wife. I pray for his children. I pray for his cabinet. I even pray for Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid. Some I pray for more than others and some more often than others. But I do. I pray for their protection. I pray for their heart to bend toward God. I pray that they be faithful instruments of God’s will and that they glorify Him in their works.

It is never easy to pray for those we sometimes view as opponents, if not enemies. But we are to pray for one another. Christ came into the world so that all who might believe in him should have everlasting life. We should pray that all do come to know the Risen Lord and embrace him as their Lord and Savior.

Merry Christmas, peace on Earth, and good will to each and every one of you.

    A nice and appropriate sentiment. I’m praying for the president and Congress to come to an agreement to address the fiscal cliff.

    Sorry but I do not share the sentiment here. Obama and his ilk are the enemies of freedom and liberty. He runs to the UN to do his dirty work, i.e., the UN gun ban, which, oddly enough, is coming back again. The sooner WE realize that he and his minions stand against us, the better off we will be.

    The only thing I pray for, for my enemies, is confusion.

    I wish y’all a Merry Christmas and a prosperous and liberal free New Year.

    I pray for their protection and that’s it. Any hope of them seeing the Light is hopeless, but pray we shall for a miracle. Merry Christmas to All.

    You are right of course. We, as Christians, are called to pray for him, and it is hard to pray for him, and all the others with whom we vehemently disagree.

    Our Creator’s plan is often difficult to surmise or understand, whether in our personal lives, or in this instance, the rising to power of a man who, it would seem, is so wrong on so many levels. But God has His purpose and all we can do is keep the faith and keep praying.

    Praying for the leader of our nation is never wrong. Jesus taught us to even pray for our enemies. The least we can do is pray for our president to make good decisions for our America. I am a Tea Party Conservative

    It is a good reminder, Erick, to pray for those who are in authority over us. Thank you. It does, however, raise a question to me that I have pondered before. Do those scripture passages mean that the leaders of the American Revolution, George Washington et.al., were, without exception, acting wrongly to fight against Britain? In other words, according to common law, is/was it possible for a leader to ever lose their right to receive obedience?

    That Obama is an enemy of much that we hold dear does not relieve us of our obligation to pray for him. Note that the New Testament passages cited by Erick were written in the realm of Caesar Nero, whose crimes would ultimately include banning Christianity and executing the authors of the cited passages. Paul and Peter might not have realized they were urging prayer for the man who would have them unjustly executed, but God did.

    I have to agree with the commentator below. I doubt that I can spare any charity or Christmas spirit for a wanna be dictator and his minions. Confusion would be the best i could do. Barry and his minions are the enemies of freedom. If this this was just a President whom we disagreed with about political differences, that would be different. But a person who wants to transform a nation based a political model that has flopped face down everywhere it ‘s been tried and results in Chicago style corruption and control of the population has to be defeated decisively. His ideology, and consequences must be exposed to the low information voter. Our job is to be able to articulate our conservative agenda through technology and informed speakers. We must reach out to the groups for people who share our values and build bridges to them and the community at large. We haven’t done a good job of that and the results of Nov 6th show this clearly.     To you and “the commentator below” – Matthew 5:43-48 is the answer.

    “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

    As Christians, we should pray for the physical well-being of President Obama and his family. President Obama may have temporary dominion over the Executive Branch of our government, but I wonder whether or not President Obama, if he prays, follows the lead of Solomon who when solicited by God, replied, “Therefore give to Your servant an understanding heart to judge Your people, that I may discern between good and evil. For who is able to judge this great people of Yours?” (I Kings 3:9.).

    That said, I take exception to Mr. Duncan’s drawing a parallel between this president and the leaders of antiquity in Christ’s time. The President does not have God-given authority to govern us. A majority of the American people, politically, personally, and spiritually have freewill as their birthright, but sadly lack virtue. Abortion, class envy, irresponsibility, gay marriage, promiscuity and hostility towards Israel were the primary motivating factors that drove Obama voters to the polls. We are hard pressed, in modern times, to find a president who campaigned and won on a platform that was so diametrically opposed to Judaeo-Christian values.

    Beyond praying that Obama receives wisdom, we can resort to praying for mercy, and courage. Mercy, that his wrongheaded and brazen approach to governance will not cause further suffering for our fellow citizens. And courage for those we have elected to preserve, protect and defend the US Constitution, and when the president fails his oath, to stand in his way.

    I wrote a diary entry two years ago on Christmas entitled “Tonight I pray for the President of the United States”. I was astonished at the amount of negativity and enmity with which the column was met– even on Christmas, and among a Christian-scented community. People could not bring themselves to pray for a man they loathe. I can understand this, but it is not a Christian thought-way.

    Either Christ is in charge, or he is not. Either we believe in the redemptive power of prayer, and what it can do for a nation, or we don’t. God has put Obama in charge of things around here, with all of his grotesque failings, for a reason. Only through prayer do we start discern the reasons.

    People conflate prayer with human intercession on behalf of human failing, as if this failing is the reason for the prayer. It manifestly is not. God simply want to hear from us, His most precious creation. In this sense, prayer is the ultimately expression of love of the worshipful. He’s not counting the prayers until enough are in the basket, and He thus will help Barack Obama do what we want him to do, or grant to him long life and good fortune, or whatever. We are given the admonition to pray for our earthly leaders so that we acknowledge the God is the Ultimate leader, and He will decide the storyline.

    Remember: Our prayers don’t necessarily “fix” a broken leader, like Obama, but it does allow us to seek His face, and turn from our wicked ways. If enough do this, God has promised to heal our land– and fix US into the bargain.

    And there is plenty of biblical evidence for this.

    Pray for Barack Obama. Hard.

    Pray does not mean endorsement. Nor does praying for our leadership mean we stop opposing them when they are wrong. We should pray specifically for the will of God to be done and for the government to be in submission to God’s authority and Word.

    Perfect explanation. The only things we are ordered to pray for when it comes to our enemies is their salvation and for them to bow to the wisdom and rule of God. We are to love them in the sense we desire to see them saved and that they repent. But that being said, we can also pray for their removal should they continue to hurt us, defy God, etc.

    My father gave me a good analogy a long time ago concerning this matter. If a pedophile hurt my child, I would be angry and desire blood. But I am bound to obey the law of the land as long as it does not interfere with God’s law. So payback would be out of bounds. So what I am to do is pray for the power to forgive, pray that my son heals, pray that the pedophile seeks repentance from both God and me, but I would also pray that he be punished to the full extent of the law, even if that meant death, regardless of whether or not the criminal repented and changed course in his life. The two types of prayers are not hypocritical nor is my praying for his punishment out of line.

    Same applies to Obama and the rest of the bums who serve him. We should pray for his salvation if needed and repentance, we should pray that he heeds the law of God, pray that he makes wise decisions, but for as long as he continues to harm us and our country, we can ask God to remove him as his will intends. There is no conflict in praying for both redemption and punishment.

    America is unique in that we elect our leaders for short periods of time and judge their actions while serving in office. It is entirely possible to respect the office various public servants hold while disagreeing with most of the decisions they make.

    For most of us here, Obama is easy to despise and the reminder to pray for him is good for us to hear. When we ask the Lord to bless our enemies, it does not always mean what we think it means from God’s perspective — especially for someone like Obama who not only does not honor God but openly defies many of the Lord’s commandments. For the Lord to bless him would require repentance and humility on Obama’s part — something only the Lord knows how to bring about in each of our lives. So, pray we must.

    From my reading of scriptures, the only time we are “allowed” to disobey rulers is when they are ordering us to disobey God or violate God’s authority in our lives. Other than that, we are to submit to them as God ordained. But don’t think for a minute that God does not see the wrong things corrupt leaders do. He does. And He promises us that vengeance is His and He will repay.

    This was a good thought.

    While I agree with a large majority of Obama’s domestic efforts, I can sympathize with opponents like Bohner and McConnell and continue to wish them well.

    Continued vilification of the other side doesn’t help find resolutions and, unfortunately, a lack of resolution could lead to real damage to our country.

    I’m a conservative and a Christian and like many conservatives I vehmenetly oppose Barack Obama’s socialist policies and also his anti-Christian views he clings to in some instances. I know, I know. Barack Obama actually claims to be a Christian and for that matter so does Joe Biden who is Catholic. Two men who claim one thing yet support policies that are contrary to the teachings of the Bible. Go figure. Take for instance abortion. Barack Obama supports abortion on demand and even infanticide i.e. killing babies outside of the womb. Joe Biden also supports a woman’s right to “choose” – to kill her baby.

    God created the world and the universe and of course He also created “life” and every living thing. Those who enable the destroying of innocent (human) life are not living in accordance with the teachings of the Bible. Jesus Christ said: “I am the Way the Truth and the “Life” [John 14:6]. Every life (whether in the womb or outside the womb) is precious in God’s sight. Jesus said: “I am come that they might have ‘life’ and have it more abundantly.” [John 10:10]. God also said: “thou shall not murder” which is one of the Ten Commandments from Exodus chapter 20. Those who seek unencumbered ways to “destroy” innocent (human) life – whether in the womb or outside the womb – are enablers of death. Subsequently, those who support abortion are living in rebellion against God… Who is the giver of life. Jesus said: “He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine, but the Father’s who sent Me.” [John 14:24]
    Another example is Barack Obama and Joe Biden’s support of the homosexual agenda. Homosexuality is condemned by God. “You shall not lie with a man as with a woman; it is an abomination.” [Leviticus 19:22] “Do you not know that the unrighteous and the wrongdoers will not inherit or have any share in the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived (misled): neither the impure and immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor those who participate in homosexuality.” [1 Corinthians 6:9] If a person claiming to be a Christian willfully neglects or disobeys the teachings of the Bible (which, by the way, is the authoritative Word of God) then that person, or person(s), i.e. Joe Biden and Barack Obama… are living ‘contrary’ to their purported Christian confession. Jesus said: “You will know them by their fruit” [Matthew 7:16] Jesus also said: “A good tree cannot produce bad fruit, nor can a bad tree produce good fruit.” [Matthew 7:18] If Barack Obama and Joe Biden are producing “bad” fruit they cannot be good Christians, because they are living contrary to, and in some cases in defiance of, the teachings of the Bible. In other words, they both claim to be Christians but their “actions” in some cases disavows that claim. If a person who claims to be a Christian actively disobeys the Word of God they obviously don’t really love the Savior. Because if they truly loved the Savior they would actively strive to keep His word. [John 14:24]

    Having said all of that. I in fact recently prayed for Barack Obama and his sidekick Joe Biden and for all those up on Capitol Hill. That God would give them wisdom to lead the country according to His will and for the good of the country. Our Founding Father’s were overwhelmingly adherents of Christianity and in fact America was founded by people who sought sanctuary from religious persecution. On the other hand, the Obama administration has now regurgitated the “war” on religious liberty in America and the people they specifically seek to “harm” are in fact Christians. While Muslims, like terrorist sympathizer Muhammad Morsi of Egypt, get the ‘red carpet’ treatment and are invited to the White House by none other than Barack Hussein Obama himself. No wonder a good percentage of the American people believe Barack Obama is actually a Muslim! Obama is waging “war” on Christian institutions (and thus Christians themselves) and then he turns around and sympathizes with Muslim ‘terrorists’ who hate Israel and the United States. And yet Obama himself claims to be a Christian?? The math just ‘doesn’t add up’ in my opinion. Saying you’re a Christian just doesn’t cut it. Actions speak louder than words and the Bible says faith without works is dead. [James 2:26]

    But I will continue to pray for our leaders in government because that is what the Bible teaches i.e. “I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone- for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.” [1 Timothy 2:1-2] Also, “Every person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God.” [Romans 13:1] The Federal Government is what it is and the politicians in the Federal Government are what they are. That doesn’t mean the American people should simply “roll over” and become “door mats” to policies and practices that are in direct violation to the Word of God and/or to the US Constitution. Oh no. Christians need to be involved in the political process and more importantly they need to vote in elections. It was estimated that close to 4 million evangelical Christians in America didn’t vote in the 2012 presidential election. Thus ensuring the reelection of Barack Obama. If just two million of those evangelicals had voted for Mitt Romney in a few of the swing states, Romney would now be president instead of Barack Obama. I think millions of Republicans and Independents felt Romney wimped out during the second and especially the third presidential debate, and consequently, the American people decided to reelect the devil they knew as opposed to the devil they really didn’t know. But I digress.

    The Declaration of Independence allows Americans the right “to alter or to abolish it (the Government), and to institute new government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety and happiness.” The Obama administration is taking America down the WRONG path and the American people will have to deal with his socialist agenda for the next four years. I sincerely hope and pray Barack Obama and his corrupt administration will get their collective act together real soon. As it stands now Barack Obama is basically shaking his fist in defiance at God in my opinion. God hates wickedness. Therefore, if Barack Obama keeps going the way he’s going i.e. instituting policies and practices that are in direct violation to the tenants of Christianity (and the Constitution), then America will likely continue to decline and the American people will likely continue to suffer under his wannabe despotic regime. WAY IN OVER HIS HEAD and essentially an EMPTY SUIT who FAILED as a community organizer (by his own admission) and who also FAILED in his first term as president in my humble opinion. But Barack Obama was able to convince enough people that he was in fact the Santa Claus that all those dependent on Government assistance had longed for, and consequently, 51% of the American people (i.e. Big Labor Unions, low information voters and those dependent on Government hand-outs) voted to reelect Santa Claus, er, Barack Obama, to a second term. Promising his devoted followers thousands of free Obama phones, EBT cards, “amnesty” for illegals, Food Stamps and other “freebies” which 51% of the American people fell for hook, line and sinker.

    The failure we witnessed in Obama’s first term will likely carry over into his second term because he and Joe Biden are doing basically the same exact things that caused their administration to FAIL the first time around. Raising taxes THROUGH THE ROOF, killing jobs, killing the economy, and generally by instituting anti-business, over-regulatory policies and spending money (we don’t have), and consequently, bankrupting the United States of America at breakneck speed. Those who refuse to learn the lesson(s) of history… are doomed to repeat them. In other words, don’t expect things to get better in Obama’s second term. Obama is basically doubling down on ‘bad policies’ that got us into this mess in the first place and as a result America hangs precariously in the balance.

    I pray that God will also make haste and raise someone up to be President of the United States that will have America’s best interest(s) at heart and who will seek to initiate policies and practices that benefit not only our country and its citizens but also favorable to our allies and friends around the world. Needless to say that hasn’t happened under Barack Obama’s corrupt socialist administration. Barack Obama has deliberately ‘divided’ the nation and he continues to “punish” our allies and friends from around the globe.

    What America needs right now is a miracle and a miracle will only be forthcoming if and when the American people get on their knees and pray and seek God and turn from their wicked ways. Then, God says, “I will hear from Heaven and will forgive their sin(s) and will heal their land.” [2 Chronicles 7:14] That is God’s promise. The choice is up to the American people. God is willing to do His part but the American people must be willing to do their part first. “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.” [James 4:8]

    I was thinking / praying about posting on this topic. You have done an outstanding job of communicating a critical source of hope for every follower of Christ. Jesus is God. As such, He is the Supreme Sovereign who “raises up kings and puts them down”. Pray for those who have been raised up to lead. Why? (other than that we are instructed to in the bible) “so that you may live peaceable lives”. Remember also to rebel in prayer. ie. Lord, you gave this man the position, look at what he has done. Please give him repentance or swift judgement and deliver us from his hands. Please give us, as citizens, repentance from our own evil ways and provide for us leaders who love and trust you as their first instinct!

    This is only one example. But, I find it to be a good way for me to both pray for those in authority over me and cast my cares and concerns on the only one who can bring healing to our country. By praying in this way, I am able to be free (for a time) from the anxieties of the left’s assaults on our freedoms and be “doing something” about it at the same time.

    I believe it’s our duty as Christians to pray for our leader. In this case we need to pray that the Lord will open his eyes to the evil he is doing to our nation. It galls me to have to do so, but I know in my heart that that’s what my lord and saviour would want me to do.

    I suggest 1 Timothy 2:1-2. We pray for those in authority so that we might lead quite and peaceful lives in all godliness and bring others to salvation. In the end Mr. Obama will serve the larger purposes of God for God is sovereign.
