Harry Reid’s Priorities: Immigration, Not Assault Weapons

The Man Knows Where His Bread Is Buttered

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid gives some revealing insight into how he sees the Senate’s priorities this spring – priorities, in line with his support back home in Nevada, that are long on addressing immigration and not so high on banning “assault weapons”:

Calling for a “cautious” approach to gun control, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid downplayed the chances of the Senate renewing an assault-weapons ban in a weekend TV interview, suggesting he will instead move forward on measures with a better chance to pass muster in the Republican-controlled House.

“Let’s be realistic,” Reid said. “In the Senate, we’re going to do what we think can get through the House and I’m not going to go through a bunch of these gyrations just to say we’ve done something. If we’re really legislators, the purpose of it is to pass legislation.”

Asked by an interviewer on PBS’ Nevada Week in Review if the much-discussed assault-weapons ban would meet such a test, Reid suggested it wouldn’t.

“Is it something that can pass the Senate? Maybe. Is it something that can pass the House? I doubt it,” Reid said…

But Reid is much more enthusiastic about getting bipartisan support for immigration bills:

“Immigration’s our No. 1 item,” Reid said. He later added, “It’s going to be the first thing on our agenda.”
Reid said a bipartisan group of senators, led by Democratic Sens. Chuck Schumer and Dick Durbin and Republican Sens. John McCain and Lindsey Graham, have been crafting a package.

“We may be able to come up with a bipartisan bill quicker than you think,” he said, adding that the senators “have agreed tentatively on a path to citizenship, which is the big stumbling block.”

“Yes, we’re going to get something significant,” Reid said, with a smile.

Your mileage may vary on which of these topics is more likely to produce mischief. But clearly, Reid in reading the tea leaves of the last election thinks Republicans are more apt to bend on immigration than guns. He may be right.

Immigration amnesty mis-named as reform adds to Democrat power bases. It’s a comprehensive destroy-the-GOP non-reform surrender to illegality.

The Republican House should draw a line – NO AMNESTY. No path to citizenship. Period. Obama plans to push for exactly that. Make sure he fails. Republicans are fools to let Democrats do this, and worse fools for thinking they need ‘credit’ to sucker punch American citizens and legal immigrants with amnesty for millions.

Banning guns? A nonsolution that will backfire get redstate Senators defeated.

Its all about the power with them. This is why Reid and Obama are spendaholics. Spending = more Democrat power. Immigration -> citizenship is their path to demographic destruction of traditional American conservatism.

Our best hope is if nothing passes, because whatever is done on immigration, if Obama wants it, its bad.

Isn’t one of the major reasons for illegals crossing the border to get a better life? If that’s the case, there surely must be a demand for sub-minimum wage workers. Wouldn’t it make sense to get rid of minimum wage, inviting businesses to hire _legal_ workers for less money? After all, if a person doesn’t want to take a job for less than $8/hr, that’s a negotiation between a prospective employer and employee.

Yes, I definitely don’t want immigration reform of any kind on Obama’s watch, although we should continue putting forth common-sense ideas which we know will never pass during his term.

Things like streamlining the immigration system, as well as improved security and interior enforcement.

Definitely, a path to citizenship as opposed to merely legal residency would be very dangerous.

I know this is as likely as me hitting the jackpot while getting struck by lighting tonight, but here goes. Reid could grease the skids on any amnesty democrat membership drive immigration bill he wants to see passed by first sending the House a bill for the completion of the border fence. Twelve months, no hem, no haw, git it done. He could even pitch it as stimulus (nudge, wink) to get the Cloward/Piven Democrats onboard.

The GOP is often referred to as “The Stupid Party” and after actually doing the arithmetic on even the short term electoral impact of compromise on “comprehensive immigration reform” let alone the long-term demographic demise of the US, it is clear that the GOP’s infatuation with “the Hispanic vote” goes beyond mere stupidity.
