EDITOR OF REDSTATE

Moving On

I was not going to say anything, but rather just fade away. I suppose though with rumors and reports I should say something.

My voicemail and inbox are, as I type, filling up. I have turned my phone off as the only way to get it to stop ringing.

Yes, I can confirm I am leaving CNN. It was a very, very difficult decision. I appreciate their willingness to keep me on, but my wife and I decided it was time to move on. Contrary to some media reports, my departure has nothing to do with the new boss, though some have speculated on that since the announcement came on the same day as those related to decisions he made.

When I told my 7 year old I had decided to leave, she laid on the sofa for an hour crying that she’d never see Anderson Cooper again. She’s never actually met Anderson Cooper. But I have and I’ll miss him and his team and I’ll miss Wolf and his team, and all the other terrific people I’ve worked with these last three years. I deeply regret never working up the courage to pull on Wolf’s beard

For three years I have been a conservative political contributor at the network I grew up watching from Dubai and then home in Louisiana. I grew up wanting to be a Bernard Shaw or a Robert Novak and wound up working for CNN.

For all those liberals who lost money thinking Keith Olbermann would outlast me at Current TV, well, sorry.

Me at CNN was not an easy fit. The first month was tumultuous with several tumultuous times throughout. I liked to think of myself as job security for the public relations department. About the only thing the far right and far left could agree on was that I did not belong at CNN.

For three years I have received unmitigated hate and loathing from the left and, ironically, from a lot of folks on the right. Frankly, I’d like to thank some significant people responsible for my time at CNN, but (1) they know who they are and (2) it’d just generate hate mail for them so I better not.

For some reason saying something negative about the GOP was fine here at RedState, but saying the same damn thing on CNN brought in a flurry of emails from conservatives accusing me of selling out. Funny how that works.

Let me set the record straight in a way I could not were I still under contract because of how self-serving it would sound.

For three years I have worked with some of the greatest people I have ever had the joy of meeting. It has been a privilege to sit in a green room and hear Paul Begala or James Carville or Donna Brazile or Hillary Rosen or David Gergen or Alex Castellanos or Ari Fleischer or Mary Matalin or Gloria Borger or so many others tell stories about their days in the White House or on the campaign trail or covering the politicians who’ve governed the country these last few decades.

I’ve learned I can be on television for twenty-six straight hours and still make relative sense.

I’ve learned that some of the people I grew up thinking were in the enemy’s camp, so to speak, are spectacular people who share many of the same interests and opinions I do.

I’ve learned that family is more than just my wife and kids and our siblings and parents, but includes a host of people who, every time I’m in the room with them, we hug and eat and talk about stuff other than politics. And they always have a place at my kitchen table and a bed to sleep in if ever they are in Macon.

I’ve learned that using my wife’s blush brush to put on my own TV makeup is more than a little problematic from both a marriage stand point and the extra color it adds. I’ve also learned that my make up is more expensive than my wife’s make up, but that’s a whole other story.

I’ve learned that a surprising number of people think Sam Feist and I are related.

I’ve learned to never stay at the Hotel Fort Des Moines when reporters and campaign operatives are in Iowa. Among all the interesting stories, I’ve learned to never stay at the Hotel Fort Des Moines when reporters and campaign operatives are in Iowa. No further comment on that one.

I learned that I will never be competitive with Roland Martin on the fashion front, but he makes an excellent road trip companion through South Carolina. One of the most formative moments of my career at CNN was standing outside a hotel with Roland Martin and tourists began handing him luggage and keys as if he worked at the hotel — only because he was in a suit. His courteousness to the people when he did not have to be courteous and the fact that in the 21st century that’d happen at all really struck me profoundly.

Because of CNN I’m not just better at my job, but I’m a better person. For all the hate and angst from a lot of folks on the right over me going to CNN, I know many of the contributors I consider good friends were initially skeptical of my hiring. I had to learn an art form too often missing these days in partisan talk — the art of conversation, particularly with those who might disagree with me. I had to learn to be friends with people who I disagreed with. And I leave deeply caring for those people.

Frankly, before I went to CNN I was oblivious to the fact that there are ways to say things, without sacrificing or compromising my view or principle, that come off as more respectable and honest without invective than how I might have otherwise said them. There are ways to say things that draw people to you and ways to say things that push people from you. There are also times that facts and “known facts” get bounced around by both sides of the political spectrum without them ever actually being actual facts. We should all be more mindful of that. CNN made me mindful of that.

I am forever grateful to them for giving me a chance and have many, many fond memories and friends.

To my friends at CNN, good luck and God bless.

Effective today I am a Fox News contributor.

Sounds like a great experience. Good luck where ever you move on to.

  • ccoolidge

Congrats on your move, Erick! Can we assume you are headed to the one network that reports the news correctly?

  • dcarter888

So these (D) pundits on CNN whose beliefs vary from yours are great people yet you still block conservatives who disagreed on your opinion of Romney during primary race & who are still blocked by you on twitter? @Dcarter888K

  • dcarter888

Palin no longer on Fox contact Rupert

  • dcarter888

I just tweeted @RupertMurdoch to contact U to join #Fox

  • constitutionjenny

You make a solid point. Both my younger sister and her
boyfriend are liberals (product of their youth and immaturity). While I
disagree with them on politics and try to convince them why conservative
principles are better, it doesn’t take away from the fact that I still enjoy
hanging out with them. People are people, and having different ideologies does
not mean we cannot have a civil and pleasant discourse.

  • http://beaglescout.wordpress.com;http://news.unifiedpatriots.com/ Beaglescout

That may be but in my personal experience conservatives like myself do not pick fights with liberals. The converse is not true.

  • Samsara

Best wishes on whatever comes next.

  • Viet71

FWIW, I think it’s good you’re moving on. Removes appearance of conflict.

Also FWIW, I’ve never been star struck. I don’t know about your CNN colleagues. Can say most all famous persons I’ve met have been overrated.

  • paul11201

Erick, the quality of your writing and the thoughtfulness of your comments are the reasons I enjoy RedState–partisan liberal that I am! Where I work we are judged on our ability to be “persuasive.” This is an under-appreciated quality, and you exhibit it in spades. I loved the fact that you were on CNN and provided some balance to their reporting. My opinion is that you would have greater impact and persuade more people if you had stayed at CNN rather than moving to Fox. But I look forward to hearing your commentary there also. Best of success on the next chapter or your career!

  • mmcan

    Class Act, Eric!

  • Tbone

I wouldn’t trust you with my luggage either.

  • Melody Warbington

CNN was called Commie News Network as far back as the ’90′s, along with the Atlanta Urinal & Constipation newspaper. Hanoi Jane was in town a lot in those days. I know. I lived there at the time.

  • Bill S

I suspect those on the Left would beg to differ. I suspect they believe that our conservative-leaning tirades are perceived as much as “picking fights” as is the reverse. I think we’re equally in the face of the other side, if my Facebook feed is any indication…

  • curtmilr

    Hallelujah!

You were besmirching your own, and the RedState brands by being there, though I’m sure the money was welcome for your family.

And you were giving CNN the dishonest cover of appearing to consider a conservative viewpoint as valid. That was blatantly untrue!!

FOX isn’t much better, so good luck!!!

  • Melody Warbington

“those on the Left would beg to differ.” They usually do, along with the name-calling and hateful rhetoric.

Conservative-leaning tirades? Really? And here I thought our side generally fought back with logic and facts. Silly me.

  • AthenaDelphi

I was young. Yet, I remember CNN being the NEWS. Now, yes, I know about Turner’s agenda, and Bernie Shaw’s Iraq news reporting in 1991 from the hotel. Does this mean that there’s no neutral journalists on the face of the planet that can take over CNN and run it like a news source with what I’ve said above? People are hungry for more than just the pap that’s on the channels we have. Fox News doesn’t have International. Heck with Shep Smith during the day – it might as well be MSNBC lite he’s so smooth a slicing in the butter knife on which stories he follows and how he frames it. What’s Aile’s up to with his HARD NEWS during the day?

Every lefty has a news channel, Beck has his 1 but its kinda boring as its a one note wonder also- but a neutral news channel with international news like the one I described above? That’s my only question and my only true desire. At one time I thought it was CNN. I knew better when Clinton got elected. I won’t watch it now at all.

Maybe Al-Jazeera is the answer. We’ll at least get something different and see international news. Yeesh. Can’t believe I said that claptrap.

  • http://www4.webng.com/rickbull/lostlucky/ rickbull

Dennis is one of the few (like James Carville) who can debate the leftist viewpoint without its devolving into a screaming match. I have great respect for both men, and I graciously disagree with their positions, but it doesn’t keep me from listening to what they have to say. I also enjoyed Erick’s account of traveling with Roland Martin (another liberal that I respect). I have read enough of Roland’s editorials that I think we might actually be able to persuade him over to the dark side, eventually.

  • runner12

Unfortunately, I am beginning to experience that as well. The old Democratic party still believed in the Constitution, even though I disagreed with many of their ideas and policies. But after Clinton the hard, Progressive Left made a massive resurgence and took over the party. The division and hatred they have stirred up has made it impossible for me to converse about politics or government policy with my left-leaning friends and still be friends.

I always forget that nugget. But he’s done some good reporting and interesting interviews. Hey, at least he’s working and not being a spoiled trust fund baby!

    Erick -

I have not always agreed with you over the years, but it’s become a real pleasure to watch you on TV and read your posts. You’ve got insights that others lack, and I frequently learn from your posts and comments. Best of luck in your new endeavor.

I’ve met, and worked with — as a former journalist — literally hundreds of liberals of all degrees in my life. I would call two of them friends, and two only — my pastor and my late first cousin. As for the rest — I cannot be ‘friends’, nor do I want to be — with those whose goal it is to destroy all that is good about America. They are, and shall remain, the enemy.

  • mindyr

Erick, I am pleased that you will be going to Fox and not just dropping off the face of the earth. I am also sorry in regards to hate feed back – I have often wondered how you endure it. That is part of the problem today on both sides Erick and the reason there is no unity – too many want it exactly their way and if you don’t support what they want exactly the way they want it or say it exactly the way they want to hear it – well, than you are anything but decent. I appreciate that you always do your utmost to provide me with facts, even if those facts are not facts I want to hear. I read Red State because you help me sort out the lies from the truth – I can trust you. Keep telling the truth Erick, don’t capitulate, there are not many of you left.

  • etheilen

Thank you, Erick, for such a beautifully written piece on your departure from what has been a wonderful experience for you. I pray that we can all learn from it and become better listeners/carriers of the Sword through this. May God bless you in your new tenure!

  • swordofzorro

Erick, being around liberals can wear you down. They can be nice people and many are charming and very polite but they’re a horse of a different flavor as my father would say. On one hand, how could CNN get balanced views if people like you leave? On the other, people like you and me can only swim in the liberal pool so long. At some point it becomes obvious that the only thing occuring is an ever increasing sense of frustration because great, awesome people can and do lack common sense at times. There are 3 close people in my life that I greatly admire and respect. All of them are liberals. They are people that would do anything for me except vote conservative. But then I’m reminded that the framers envisioned a multi-party system in this land for good reason. If we saw eye-to-eye on everything we’d be communists, fascists or some other “ist” where everyone wears the same uniform and marches to the same beat. It’s better we live in a country that allows us to pick the side of the aisle we feel most confortable on.

  • sliverlining

“I never even knew you were ON CNN until this announcement on RedState that you were leaving.”
So true for me as well. CNN to me is what bars have turned on all day because the TV remote got smashed in the last my-tattoo’s-better-than-yours fight. Endless repetition of semi-news mixed with soap commercials only made interesting by the drooling idiot watching it sitting next to me. It has the news he needs!
Never watch it with the sound on as a result. Who cares?

IF you were there Erick, it’s better that you are gone. Take the money and run like a bunny (a Vegas dealer told me that once : )
I’d say there are worse stations to try to become famous on but CNN was pretty bad.

Get your message out elsewhere and this time we will find you (I’ll be checking your stuff on Fox. Maybe you’re interesting on TV ; )

  • tinatrent

Donna Brazile says hate-filled, racist things about conservatives all the time, so I wonder what you and she discussed. The lesson here is that being part of the inner circle grants you special privileges in politics. Why that wasn’t the lesson you noted is a curious, because it is supposed to be a foundational observation of the politics espoused here.

    I find this disturbing.

  • handshake

Well said Erick, well said as usual.

  • smill1953

    Great post!

  • funwithknives

A thumbnail sketch here, if you’ll all bear with me :
Scene starts at Sea-Tac airport while waiting for a plane after a week’s cruise to Alaska, 9/2010. My Wife and I were looking for a 3 hour sit-down spot and I inquired to a gent and his wife if the next spot over was vacant.
(I use a travel vest and it’s got a Life Member pin from the NRA, A Liberty Statue pin from The L P, and an Enameled American Flag on the chest areas)

    Before he says anything else, he checks me out, gets antsy, and says : ” I’m a Liberal so I guess you wouldn’t want to sit here.” {Oh, those nasty pins…}
My retort was out of character for me [spring-loaded to the P O 'd postion is normal] as I did not want to cap off a really nice trip with rancor, so I simply said : ” Hey, everybody has to be Something, guy…” and you could see ‘the air’ rush out of him.

I’ve never forgotten that exchange and Erick just brought it back into mind, big-time.
Erick, where ever you go and whatever you do , you’ll always have a Fan in Motown.
…and now, since I could never keep CNN on got more than a wisp of time , things are looking up, incrementally.
If I had Ten Thumbs, they’d all be in the Up & Locked Position………

    Excelsior, you big palooka……

  • gmhunt

This whole article is BS, evidently you are NOT a Constitutional Conservative, just in it for the money…..you should have stayed with CNN with the rest of the liberal socialist American way of life Haters and Obama lovers.

  • rightlane1111

Whoa…there big guy…when I did watch you…I liked you and for the most part agreed with you. Being a Conservative and not backing the GOP on everything they do is not wrong. I, for the most part, am against many in the GOP because they do not live up to Conservative principles…they just spout it out when it is time for election.

Perfect example…John Boehner…and his “secret” meetings wherein he left out Conservatives or dropped them from committee posts. What was that all about? How about ole John McCain…why he is almost as bad as Lincoln Chaffee (sp)

People, believe it or not, are turning to the Internet for the news instead of the TV. Many people are sick and tired of being told how they think.

Good luck to you Mr. EE….and we will be seeing you pop up somewhere to give your opinion…of that I am sure.

  • rightlane1111

You know…there are posting rules…so I don’t want to be banned…but think about what is running through my mind. Are you one of these people that believes everything that the supposed (key word) says is correct! I am a Conservative and I believe in the Constitution…but your comment was uncalled for.

gmhunt..do you think that when the Constitution was being drafted that everyone was in sinc with each other? Better bone up on history…because there were opposing points of view and they contributed to what WAS the Constitution. You would rather shoot the messenger than listen to what he said. If you have a reply…start citing specific instances where EE was against the Constitution.

  • daniel22

Erick, I can understand your decision and also the combination of heat and praise you have had to deal with. I also am familiar with the RedState rules on third parties and the fact that in the past you supported GOP/conservative views. In light of the last election and its machinations that both major parties were guilty of how are you going to use your new position?
If we play the sit down and shut up game that seems to be what the GOP desire then we will definitely lose regardless of the D or R in front of their name. There needs to be a change in the way business is done with the GOP as a party to effect change. You will have a pulpit to do just that and possibly unite the factions of the Tea Party as well as other Libertarian parties as well. Are you going to do that or do we just maintain the status quo?

  • jaykali

Excellent! Finally Erick will actually be seen by someone. I have never watch Erick on CNN only bc like many conservatives, I cannot bear to watch CNN. It’s either boring or biased 24/7. So I would love to see some Erick on Fox.

  • cbartlett

Excellent sign-off, Erick. Looking forward to seeing you on Fox. There are a few over there that need some straightening out – go for it!!

  • jaykali

    Ouch

  • jaykali

Dude I’d love to see Erick on some All-star panels. Redstate is my favorite site and yet I never see Erick at all since he’s been on CNN.

  • gapch12

Feel sorry to CNN to be losing a true conservative voice as this station need more conservatives not less; but very happy to know that Fox is very smart in signing you on. Appreciate you being up front and letting us all know that you are leaving on good terms.

  • romeg

Well, it’s about freakin’ time! Congratulations!

I can appreciate how ‘sleeping with the enemy’ so to speak, can generate the negativity you experienced. And yes, you can dump all over Republicans here but if you go ‘over there’ and do it, well, you’re going to be treated as a traitor. As Harry Truman famously stated regarding similar circumstances “They might be S.O.B.’s but they are OUR S.O.B.’s.”

I look forward to seeing you on Fox.

  • soldiermom11

Sorry Eric. I didn’t know you were on CNN since I don’t watch it. I do read your site though. I will be looking for you on Fox. Maybe The Five can have you on as a guest? Fox is the only news channel I watch. Some times I check out CNN or NBC just so see what the spin is for the day or if they said anything pertinent like what happened in Benghazi. Needless to say, I never find what I am looking for.

  • jmtate816

Wow, never knew you were on CNN. They must have kept you in the back room. Hope you’ll get better exposure at Fox. Fox has been turning left now for some time. Maybe they’ve been watching too much CNN themselves. Hopefully you can veer them back to the right somehow.

Someone with some objectivity needs to buy out CNN or MSNBC and stop the hateful rhetoric. They are both responsible for the for all the low information voters who helped return Obama to the WH for a second term.

  • Seedyrom

I hate to see you go but I’m glad FOX wants you because I expected you to float to other companies or make another move. CNN needed a balanced conservative like you because you were not afraid to challenge others and better explain what liberals got wrong or lied about.

Jeff Zucker ruined NBC news and the Today show is more flaky and boring than ever, now he’s CNN’s President so you left at a good time. I expect race hustling and more lies to be part of CNN’s demise. Far left liberals hate cnn because they cover Obama’s negatives and they want controlled speech and the minimization of anything that casts doubt or scandal on their messiah. Will CNN go as low as MSNBC aka MSDNC, doubt it but they made many bad choices.

Fox made a good choice choosing you Erick! Good luck!!

  • Seedyrom

Agreed. We don’t have to call them names nor lie about them, telling them the truth and correcting them is good enough. And it drives them crazy because they want to discriminate and profile everyone who is against them.

  • trailbee

Life is awash in lessons, and I am happy for you. But, I’m happier for myself and my husband, as there will be a chance for us to see you on Fox. Yippee! Welcome. :)

  • thehumancondition

can someone please tell me what is this far right that eric mentioned? sorry, i know i am new here, and so may have some questions that don’t “fit in” if you will. i am always honest in my beliefs about things, and aren’t into labels, but am not a “troll”. so, anyone?

  • Bill S

    Bye.
