FRONT PAGE CONTRIBUTOR

The essential problem with the Chuck Hagel nomination.

It’s actually… pretty simple: Chuck Hagel is a bit of a schlemiel. I’m not actually trying to reference Hagel’s Jewish problem*, here: it’s just that Yiddish has an excellent word to describe a sad-sack bungler, and English wants the useful words. It wants all the useful words.

…Anyway, Hagel is a schlemiel. Now, I know what people are thinking: they’re thinking “But… but… but being a schlemiel has NEVER been a barrier to acquiring a Cabinet post!” And they would be correct. We – read, both parties – have traditionally taken the opportunity given to us by the Cabinet to store inconvenient, superfluous, and/or ineffectual politicians for a while until they can be safely retired**. This is, in fact, a time-honored tradition. The problem here, though, isthat we typically do not nominate schlemiels for Secretary of Defense; a quick review of the list of them reveals a group of sharp-tongued, tough-minded, and generally strong-willed men who would have gone through Thursday’s Armed Services Committee hearings like a hot knife through soft butter.

And that’s why even the Democrats are blinking at Thursday’s performance: they assumed, like everybody else, that Barack Obama cared enough about this position to assign it to somebody who was prepared and even eager to swing back. But Obama… doesn’t. I guarantee that the President is much more concerned about who to get for what he considers to be the important Cabinet posts, like Labor and Energy. And President Obama probably doesn’t even see what the fuss is about: so what if Chuck Hagel’s a schlemiel? I mean, what’s the worst that could happen?

…Don’t answer that. I debated whether or not to tempt fate by even typing out that question.

Moe Lane (crosspost)

*To the extent that he has one; at this point, the exact nature of Chuck Hagel’s attitudes towards Jews has been thoroughly obscured by now, and largely by… Chuck Hagel.

**Which reminds me: congratulations on your confirmation, Secretary Kerry.

Will be interesting to see the reaction of the troops. Me thinks Hagel’s appointment will not be helpful with the “good order and discipline” thing.

It’s obvious to me that the extent of the White House preparation of Chuck Hagel was telling him, “You’ll do fine,” and handing him a copy of the complete and annotated Beetle Bailey by Mort Walker. Obama’s plan, as I see it, is to spend the next four years discrediting the Republican Party as much as they can, and Chuck Hagel as Defense Secretary is the perfect tool for doing just that.

  • Kyle-MI

The sad thing is that there are now two Republican Senators on record as planning to vote for Hagel. It is not as if the Dems need any GOP votes for him, although I am sure they enjoy the cover. If you cannot vote again a guy with as lousy as performance as this, then you shouldn’t be a Senator.

And I guarantee you that if the roles were reversed the nominee wouldn’t get a single Dem vote. Just the stupid party continuing to be stupid.

  • trailbee

You’re kidding, right? I’ll be sure to get on it right away.

  • littlehouse18

The guy is a low-intelligence anti-Semite. Plain and simple. It wouldn’t surprise me if he were a secret Islamist too. We are in great peril..

  • Chris

A secret Islamist? Where on Earth did you get that idea? I mean, even if he literally hated Israel and all Jewish people, which I don’t believe, that still wouldn’t make him a Muslim. I don’t think its healthy for our country to see Islamists under every stone and behind every bush. Besides, a person doesn’t need to be an Islamist to be terrible at their job (nor are Muslims inherently bad), so there’s no reason to inflate his job disqualifications.

  • joshinca

Calling Hagel an islamist is flat out crazy. He’s also not an anti-semite.

He is an old school high plains isolationist, who was never as bright at the msm pretended and has declined with age.

I seriously wonder if he was set up for failure, ala Susan Rice, to smooth the way for Obama’s real nominee (yet to be revealed in this case)

  • checkmate2012

Yep, put in an R figurehead to defend his, “even a R SoD is on board with massive defense cuts”. Hukabee compared him to Gomer Pyle! Face it, I don’t think any cabinet members have much say in policy-making under this prez. It’s all rule by the prez via his Chicago team.

  • ww2nd95

I’m no fan of Hagel, but I don’t think he’s anti-Semite or an Islamist. With comments like this, it’s no wonder Jindal is out there saying..”We have to stop being the stupid party”.

  • bk

On the other hand, it’s not like Obama would nominate someone interested in a serious fight against the war on terror or saw someone other than Israel as the only obstacle to middle east peace if Hagel were defeated, so what difference does it make?

You have a wondrous knack for finding a silver lining in a dark cloud : )

  • longhawl

Is there a safe place we could park Harry Reid?

  • gawken

You’re wrong, Moe. Hagel is not a schlemiel. He is much more like a schmuck, or a putz.

( And yes, there is a difference..)

I think you’re sarcasm meter is broken
