Douglas County’s GOP Blocks GA Black Republican Chair from being a County Delegate

It’s not often I get to write about happenings in my old neck of the woods, but that’s a fact of life when you were born and raised in a relatively sleepy suburban county of metro Atlanta. Still, don’t let the “sleepy” bit fool you; once you peel back that layer, you find the same kinds of political gamesmanship and good ol’ boy network shenanigans that exist everywhere else.

This story comes to us courtesy of Erick’s old stomping grounds at Peach Pundit. Apparently, 1st Vice Chair of the Douglas County Republican Part Michael McNeely, who is also the Chairman of the Georgia Black Republican Council, has been blocked from being a delegate to the county’s GOP Convention by county GOP Board Member Jack Gamel. Peach Pundit links to this post from Constant Contact, where Bryan Tolar, 3rd Vice Chairman of the DCGOP, tells us:

At the Mirror Lake precinct table today, Douglas County GOP Board Member Jack Gamel led an effort to refuse Michael McNeely (a strong conservative and 1st Vice-Chair of the Douglas County GOP) a precinct delegate spot. There were 15 delegate slots available and only five people present, yet Jack insisted in his action. Jack’s petty old white man politics targeted one of the rising African American stars of Georgia and National GOP leaders. By a 3-2 vote, Jack’s efforts were successful.

Charlie from Peach Pundit, meanwhile, adds this:

I spoke to Michael McNeely today by phone.  He told me that Mr. Gamel told him that his exclusion was because McNeely ran against Gamel’s friend Terry Baggett last term for First Vice-Chair of the Douglas County Party – a position that Mr. McNeely won.  So, in the pettyness that is county party politics, we have a man at the precinct level who chose to block his county’s First Vice Chairman from being a delegate to his county’s convention out of what appears to be a petty act of revenge.

As Peach Pundit notes, none of this was against the rules, but this nevertheless is establishment politics at its worst. A conservative candidate (McNeely) dares to run against the guy hand-picked by a party boss, and as a consequence, the conservative gets hit with payback and shut out of the process.

Mr. McNeely’s race should be irrelevant to this discussion, but the optics here are not good nevertheless. The GOP already has enough of a problem with its reputation as the party of “old white men”, so what better way for us to live up to that image than by excluding a conservative black man from a county convention! It only looks worse when you consider the fact that McNeely is the Chairman of the Georgia Black Republican Council!

Nice job, guys.

Oh, but it gets worse. As Peach Pundit notes:

At a time when the Republican Party is desparately trying to figure out how to reach out to non-white voters, McNeely and his wife (who was not in attendence but was nominated to be a delegate) were excluded by a vote of 3-2.  Three white votes were for exclusion; Two African American votes were for inclusion.

As if that wasn’t enough, the Douglas County GOP hasn’t been exactly proactive in its response. The only thing they’ve done so far is condemn the guy who posted on Constant Contact.  Bert Blood, chairman of the Douglas County Republican Party has this to say (again, courtesy of Peach Pundit):

This afternoon a member of our board who had access to the Constant Contact password used this service to air personal grievances regarding an incident at today’s meeting.

I want to take this opportunity to APOLOGIZE to all party members for this breach of trust and to assure you that I will do all within my power to insure that the integrity of this valuable database is maintained.
So, with shenanigans going on right under his nose, this is all he can muster.

This is an embarrassment. The Douglas County GOP should be ashamed of themselves. By letting these antics county continue in a county that has gone Democratic in the last two Presidential elections, they are doing themselves no favors at expanding their base and turning the county red again. We shouldn’t let petty vendettas keep those who want to serve from doing so, especially when there are more than enough spots open for them. Georgia and Douglas County Republicans, let’s fix this.

P.S. The Georgia Young Republicans have a nice statement on the situation. As they note, apparently Michael’s wife Jennifer McNeely was also kept from becoming a delegate.

Wow. The stupid, it burns. I participated in the Cobb County GOP mass precinct meeting this past Saturday, and my precinct had five GOP members show up, one of whom was a new guy, who happened to be a young black man. I had been through the process a year ago, and he was full of questions that I was happy to answer for him. I filled in all five names, to be county convention delegates. Just speaking for Cobb County, but I know that we are thrilled to have more black party members and participants in this process. We need more black and hispanic members. I just can’t fathom doing what Douglas County has (apparently) done.

This is disgusting. However…I will offer this as an argument for those in Douglas County who do not have a vision. So, here it is. Many people who are not bigoted and would be open to a person with integrity (doesn’t matter what color) are being conditioned by our great leader to think in terms of “white/black; rich/poor/religion/secular. I don’t agree with it..but to be truthful…when the One comes on TV…he never seems to leave out race. That makes me feel discriminated against. All one has to do is look at the scam that Shirley Sherod and Barack Obama played on the USA and one get really mad. Talk about a cash cow.

I live in GA. I am well aware of the good ole boys attitude and in the case of my county, it include relatives and special favors. Our GOP Chair wants to run his operation like they did in New Jersey…God Help Us. So…we have a “mouthy NE US guy versus a county that still has enough good ole boys to sway the election. Different scenario … same outcome. It’s corrupt.

We need fresh blood in our State. No discrimination…just the ability to better the state and its people. I can just imagine the remarks of our US Senate when Nikki Haley appointment to replace DeMint was Black and Conservative! Now that is really a shame…and it has been going on for one heck of a long time. It just does not exist in GA…but right there in DC.

Question: Has anyone heard Obama congratulate the new Senator from South Carolina????

  • edburke

As an old white man and a son of a Georgia girl I am offended by your quoting approvingly a passage refererring to ‘old white man’ politics. Old white men have as much to be proud of young white men or old black men or whoever you care to mention. Are you saying that black people are somehow better than white people? If so you should join the Democratic Party because it gets 95% of the black vote. Is it possible that one of our kind opposed the appointment because they didn’t share your high opinion of the proposed appointee? Black conservatives are valued because they appear to refute the charge that the GOP is insensitive to the interests of blacks. But they don’t refute the charge: just because someone is black doesn’t mean that his main goal is looking out for black interests. Nor does being black make one an instant expert on how best to serve the legitimate interests of black people. Your racist language has no place in civil discourse.

Apparently McNeely will be going after all.

“Question: Has anyone heard Obama congratulate the new Senator from South Carolina????”

Right! Like that’s going to happen.

Ed, I get your point and I in many ways I agree. Unfortunately, optics matter. What often makes the GOP look like the party of Stupid has to do with things just like this. The County Chairman was in lose/lose position: his friend lost to a political enemy, and that enemy is of African descent, making revenge appear racially motivated. The best outcome at this point is for McNeely to state that this was about politics and not race. Otherwise, it just looks stupid, even if it’s only petty.

  • davesinsanantonio

It is NOT a question of diversity! It is a question of integrity. This guy who protested someone over running against his buddy, if that was really the reason, has none! He should be replaced in his party office with someone who has some. Yes, we should allow all who want to serve in our party have the chance, but that is still a matter of integrity, not diversity. All people should be “judged by the content of their character, not the color of their skin”! And, the jerk who objected to a qualified candidate, especially when there were empty seats, has proven what his character is like, and he should be so judged!

  • tlhanger

But it is fixed and McNeely is a delegate. So let’s stop talking about it.

Did this really have to be posted here?
Is this not a local problem?
It only spreads the word to help those idiots hurt us!
    They are not us!
They are some other kind of slime.
This is a bad judgement on this blog,

  • rightlane1111

Well now…rickbull…doesn’t that make Obama a racist by ‘HIS DEFINITION’. In fact…according to their limits (Dims) that might be considered a hate crime. See what I mean…the person that has stirred up all this hate and division is none other than BHO with the help of the ever so smart VP…Joey

  • patriotaz

Yeah, even in the lower levels of politic,s power is the name of the game. These idiots don’t have a clue about the ‘big picture.’ All they want is to keep hold of their little fiefdom and petty power plays. No wonder there is talk about starting a third party. We have idiots like this all throughout the Republican Party. It’s disgusting!!!

  • patriotaz

Yes it helps to post this ‘happening’ here!! It is a microcosm of what is wrong across the Republican Party and it needs to stop! We used to be the party for minorities and in fact our party was the initiator and champion for civil rights. How did that get turned around to us being a racist party? It’s antics like this one in Douglas County that has helped to give us the reputation that we are against the Blacks.

  • vandalii

Bigger issue: our self-inflicted wounds are festering all over the place…and we keep shooting at our own foot. What do we learn from incidents like this, how do we present ourselves to the public at large (including MSM)? “Moving on” is all well and good, provided you learn from the road just travelled.

As I posted earlier, our self-inflicted wounds (both local and national) are festering all over the place…and we keep shooting at our own foot. What do we learn from incidents like this, how do we present ourselves to the public at large (including MSM)? “Moving on” is all well and good, provided you learn from the road just travelled.

We aren’t paying attention to the message we send to the outside world when we do stupid, petty things to ourselves in public or in private. We’re really not learning from our mistakes. And yes, a local p*ssing match *does* matter out here if it helps prevent another one because we learned something this time…

    Mel,
    Thanks for that information.

For me, the glaring question is this: why were only five Republicans in the precinct willing to run for the 15 delegate positions? Where was everyone else?
The real ball game of politics is played inside the Party, but seems not enough conservatives want to play the game.
There are plenty of vacancies inside our Party machinery. In some cases, all conservatives have to do is show up and they’ll fill those positions by default.

Overall, our Party is there for the taking by conservatives. We just have to show up.

    Oh well.
Thanks to all of the conservatives who do participate.

    Thank you.

I think it just makes BHO a partisan, political hack. And Joey only has two brain cells: one for breathing and one for standing. H/T to Stieg Larsson.

  • mogul264

What was that cracker’s name? Jim Crow? God, I thought Georgia had become enlightened enough to accept that a black man can do a job as well as a white man can, with both being otherwise equal in training, etc. This slavering idiot needs to be retired from NATIONAL politics forthwith, and from Ga State politics, too, if at all possible!

  • PowerToThePeople

Cracker? You make a racist jab and yet feel pious enough to lecture the other guy for the assumed same thing. Is that not a great example of irony?

His reasons had nothing to do with whether or not a black man could do as good of a job as a white man. Get over yourself.

  • Don T.

CW, good question…where IS everybody? Last year, 5 people, myself included, showed up for the mass precinct meeting. This year, 5 people, myself included, showed up again. Besides myself, both times, one was my state rep and one was my post school board member. My precinct, by proportion of voters for the GOP presidential candidate in the last election, is authorized 28 primary and 28 alternate delegates. Well, this year, I’m now precinct chairman. With help from my district chairman, I hope to improve on participation. I understand it is an off election year, but still, it’s disappointing to see.

    Don T.,
    Thanks for the information.

And, on behalf of my family and me, thank you for getting into the real ball game and participating.

If you ever want to communicate about some ideas for recruiting greater numbers of conservatives where you live, shoot me an emai: coldwarrior1978 at gmail dot com.
