Obama’s Cowardly Mendacity Over Sequestration

In August 2011, Obama hatched a deal to grant himself a free $2.1 trillion increase in debt, which would take him past the 2012 elections, thereby sparing him the embarrassment of another debt limit request during the campaign season.  He knew that such a request was so bold it needed to be ensconced in a deal that would give voters the impression he was committed to cutting spending.  To that end, the Budget Control Act called for the creation of a super committee to identify $1.2 trillion in baseline cuts and tax increases.  Given that the committee would be evenly split between Republicans and Democrats, Obama knew that this would trigger the sequestration.  And that is exactly what he wanted.

Nobody could accuse Republicans of designing the sequester.  Only a leftist like Obama would ensure that the one mechanism to actually cut spending would disproportionately cut defense.  For example, this year’s sequester will cut $42.7 billion from defense, $28.7 billion from non-defense discretionary spending, and $14 billion from mandatory spending, most notably, to healthcare providers.  Obama figured that Republicans would be so scared of the defense sequester that they would come to him begging for a reprieve.  That way Obama would be saved from cutting one penny of spending from any account, and could possibly leverage more tax increases in exchange for letting them off easy with defense spending cuts.

A free $2.1 debt limit increase in exchange for nothing but defense cuts and possible leverage to raise taxes…..sounds like a nice plan, doesn’t it?

In 2011, Republicans went along with this insane plan.  As a result, we burned through the $2.1 trillion in new debt in just 17 months.  We actually increased spending during that time period.  Now the time to pay the infinitesimal price of spending cuts has come due.  Conservatives decided to draw a line in the sand and not fall into Obama’s trap.  While we don’t like the fact that 50% of the cuts will come from the most important part of the budget, which only represents 20% of total outlays, we will not pass up an opportunity to cut non-defense discretionary spending; nor will we be suckered into more tax hikes.

Before it became clear to Obama that conservatives were willing to stand on principle even in the face of defense cuts, he actually threatened to veto any repeal of the sequester.  Now that we are calling his bluff, he is saying the world will come to an end if we don’t repeal it.  The reality is that Obama couldn’t care less about defense.  All he cares about is the non-defense spending.  The federal budget sans base defense spending is roughly $3 trillion.  A $42.7 billion cut is approximately 1.4% of the rest of the federal budget.  If you can’t handle a 1.4% cut off your record high baseline after concocting this plan in exchange for your debt limit increase, you are nothing but a coward, Mr. President.

This needs to be the message emanating from Republicans.  Instead of buying into Obama’s message of doom, Republicans need to pocket this victory.  They should let the American people know that they are willing to let go of their scared cow; now it’s time for Obama to man up and accept his own spending cuts, which are smaller than the defense cuts.

The real concern for conservatives is that too many Republicans are refusing to take yes for an answer, and accept the sequester.  Instead, they are trying to fight it, even though most of them voted for it, while squandering their political capital to fight Obamacare in the upcoming continuing resolution.  Some “anonymous” aids have already suggested they will never fight the CR.

With such poor messaging over the sequester, as so astutely noted by Byron York, it’s no wonder conservatives like Jim Bridenstine are smelling another capitulation.

Boehner and McConnell need to put out one more statement challenging Obama to keep his word on his own deal, just like they are (hopefully) willing to uphold their end of the deal on defense spending.  Then, they must move on and immediately begin assailing Obamacare every day for the next month.

Obama is on the run.  Republicans are the only ones who can save him.

With what I read here about his proposal months ago, you would think that he is just dumb which is hardly from the truth. Don’t you often wonder what his REAL agenda is? He is excellent at what he is doing and if you have ever seen the movie “Disclosure” you will see that in action. You fret about all this stuff which he dismisses and goes on. Does he really care about anyone at anytime? Doesn’t he have you programmed about the stuff being done or not being done? What is his real objective? You are all being pulled into his web. He is NOT governing and the Fox News calls his actions “campaigning”. He is doing neither. Congress is missing the ball too so don’t anyone feel bad. What ARE we going to do when his objectives are truly known? Will it be too late? His statements “I’ll help you”. Sure you will, right over the cliff. Or this is bad for you / be scare. Sure I will. He isn’t flipflopping but he is maneuvering. FOR what purpose? I sure would like to know and buying up the ammunition is a clue? And so it goes… Voting present is just a tip to tell you our way of governing is of no concern to him. What IS? Arab spring? He sure did NOT think about this other than the commotion between others, causing havoc, as he goes on about … what? his agenda?

I am not as sure as you are about his ultimate goal. I do think he is following his true ideology. He does believe in collectivism. He does believe it is good for the government to take care of its citizens from cradle to grave. He does believe in redistribution of wealth. He does believe that government creates wealth. He does believe this nation was founded on slavery by greedy white men. He does believe in BIack Liberation Theology. He is the perfect demagog for his idealogy.

At present we spend as much on the military as the next 14 countries combined. With a 6% cut in military spending we would only be spending as much as the next 12 countries combined. That’s still a ludicrous amount to be spending when we’re in an era of tight budgets and we’re trying to shrink the size of government.

Kind of a threadjack here, but here’s an interesting thing about people who truly believe in collectivism; they all imagine that once their New Wold Order comes to pass, THEY will be members of the ruling elite, not one of the guys working 18-hour days deep in the bowels of The People’s Tractor Factory. This, of course, would be necessitated by the State’s need for people with an enlightened understanding of the Class Struggle, yadda yadda yadda (in other words, they would HAVE to be the ones running things, because They Know Better Than The Rest of Us, the same reason that they’re liberals in the first place)…

What’s even more interesting is that almost all of these people have degrees in something that’s (a) not terribly practical, and (b) almost completely lacking in academic rigor. This makes me wonder what percentage of the ruling elite in the Soviet Union had degrees in Russian, anthropology, sociology, or political science? I’d bet it was pretty small. As I understand it, nearly every member of the politbureau in China has an engineering degree.

Why is he going to Israel now? The election is over but there is not full unity there, could it be ?? He did NOT go there when he made his ARAB swing. He is dividing our country. We are far less friendly to each other as we were during the Reagan years. We are fighting with our own legislature. But he seems to be above it all. March 1st will come and go but he will be left intact. Whether the Republicans fold or not, is of really no matter to him except it is to us. I truly think that if more people were out of work and more discontented it will fit his agenda… possibly? He has ran around every law and no one does a thing. I truly wonder what you or I would want if it would have been our son killed in Libya. Congress will never impeach him. He’ll agree to anything that furthers his goal but his goal….. Can anyone tell me what he is going to do with his civil army? And just who has joined it? Is there any information there? I am sorry to inject this thread but there has been no place to truly discuss this. He’s on the trail again about some thing that further divides us. Why? If your thought is that he just wants to ruin the Republicans, for what reason in 4 years? Do you think he is going to ride off into the sunset in 4 years? It seems he has been groomed. But for what? Not just 8 years in the White House to ride off into the sunset. Will there be an election in 2016? I think the bigger picture is beyond us but once there we will be able to look back and say…….. I should have known. If we need to be vigil and I think we do, how in the world do we wake up the .. what did the Japanese say “wake up the sleeping giant”.. Are we fit to the task if we couldn’t get Romney elected? The Democratic party has been trashed and it is not the party it used to be just 10 years ago. He has no love for them either.. Just some thoughts to ponder.

The Senator that proposed this has proposed it every two years but it has never reached the floor. That is not to be taken as written in stone that it won’t.. but what would our congress do? Yikes….. more empty faxes and phone calls. Another off the wall question…. would you help (physically and financially) a movement to write and assist the passing of an amendment to limit terms in Congress? Forty seven years is a mockery! Feeding frenzy at the trough!! How about the Judical? It will be hard work but most of the country would favor it.. wouldn’t they?

    Right on!

It says that 800,000 civilian workers for the military are going to get laid off. I say what do we need 800,000 military civil service workers for anyway? If we just nuked Iran and North Korea into dust, the rest of the World would get squared away real quick. See, the best defense IS a good offense.

Soros has been dreaming of breaking our country, just as he did Britain, for so long! I doubt there will be any stopping him now that he is so close to success. I believe they WANT an ‘American spring’ .. however I believe We the People will surprise them and not take the bait.

  • Blue_State_Refugee

So I’m hearing a simple solution might be to allow the flexibility for agencies to prioritize cuts rather than taking the same percentage across the board. Why doesn’t the House just go ahead and pass this simple bill and send it to the Senate? I would think this would expose the Senate and President as wanting to create an issue for 2014 as opposed to a solution today.

A friend retired after many years in the Army. He is now a contractor and he does the same job as he did when he was in service. My understanding is it is about benefits. The contractors are not earning retirement etc. Just an idea as I have not experienced this personally.

So the next 14 countries combined have freed how many people?
