The CR Vote Tally: Courage in the Senate; Capitulation in the House

The House voted overwhelmingly to pass the CR today which failed to cut one cent from Obamacare.  30 members signed the Bridenstine-Huelskamp letter asking leadership to defund Obamacare through the CR.  16 members voted against the rule to bring up the CR, some of which hadn’t signed the letter.  Only 14 members voted against the CR.  In other words, several members took the drastic step of opposing a rule, yet voted for the bill.  All this confusion is above my pay grade.  Nonetheless, here is the tally:

30 signers of March 4, 2013 Letter from Bridenstine & Huelskamp to Boehner & Cantor Urging Defunding of Obamacare in Any Appropriations Bill:

16 Voting “No” on the Rule for Continuing Resolution, HR 933, 3/6/2013

14 Voting “No” on Passage of the Continuing Resolution, HR 933, 3/6/2013

Now the CR moves on to the Senate.  Ted Cruz and Mike Lee have taken up the campaign to defund Obamacare, as noted in these pages.

At this point, it’s relevant to reflect on the Rand Paul filibuster over the issue of drone strikes on American citizens on American soil.  Many conservatives have been reinvigorated watching Rand Paul and some of his allies on the floor engaging in an old fashioned filibuster in order to defend the Constitution and separations of powers.   Watching the filibuster, the thought occurred to me that this is exactly what should have been done with Obamacare in 2009/2010.  Why didn’t Mitch McConnell use every parliamentary procedure to block Obamacare?  More relevant to today, these same senators should engage in the same educational filibuster against funding Obamacare next week when the Senate considers the CR.   If nothing else, we’re long overdue for a national discussion over Obamacare, personal liberty, and free markets.  We need to take this #StandWithRand show and run with it.

Then again, times are changing in Washington, at least in the Senate.  As my good friend Wes Goodman noted on twitter, “thanks to Senators Trey Grayson, Charlie Crist, David Dewhurst, and Bill Bennett for leading this filibuster for freedom.”  Throw in Arlen Specter, notes Moe Lane.

Primaries do matter, and from now on we’re looking for game-changers.  Amazingly enough, we might have a larger percentage of them in the Senate than in the House.

It should be Job #1 to primary Boehner, Cantor, McCarthy, McConnell & Graham. Lord knows there are others but these five must go.

  • gmat

I doubt if they are present. I’d be surprised if there are 5 Senators in the building.

Graham was invited to have dinner w/Obama tonite. Not sure about McCain.

  • Melody Warbington

Paul, Cruz, Lee, Rubio, Cornyn, Toomey, Chambliss, Moran have all participated. Maybe more. I just tuned in a couple of hours ago, and we’re in hour 6.

    Thumbs up
Fillibuster to educate on Obamacare in the old fashioned way Senaror Paul is doing. And soar as he and his helpers have done. Let the constitution and our freedom loving values be driving forces in the Obamacare debate whatever its form.

There is always an eager audience for freedom and constituional principles. I stop and listen. Delay, defund , repeal Obamacare.

  • clowngirl

Graham made unhelpful and disrespectful remarks saying that those concerned about the issue are just paranoid. Have no idea about McCain.

They are both at the dinner tonight.

Amen! As important as today’s filibuster is, ObamaCare should be our number one fight.

Electing Ted Cruz has pulled John Cornyn further to the right. I’m so proud to see both our Texas senators up there today.

What would/could be the goal of a filibuster on ObamaCare in the senate? Just education? Defunding? I can only imagine that after all the attention and praise that Rand Paul has gotten today, we might have a line of Republican Senators wanting their turn at it.

Can the tide finally be turning? Tanking poll numbers for Obama, failed narrative on sequestration cuts, and now groups like ACLU and Code Pink supporting our filibuster!
There’s blood in the water and now finally our side might be ready to do more than just stand up, but to actually go on offense! I guess time will tell. Let’s call those who are fighting and tell them THANK YOU!

And Ted Cruz looked so presidential tonight. He is so poised, calm, intelligent, personable. I would like him to run even though he’s new there. He has it all, and I would sleep well at night knowing he was in charge. I get the sense he could handle any contingency. Even stronger than Rubio.

  • littlehouse18

Thune, and now Tim Scott. McConnell decided he’d better have some time as well.

I hope Rand doesn’t have any surgery to perform this week. I think if I were his patient I would reschedule. :)
He’s doing an amazing job. Still so cogent after all this time.

  • lastgopinillinois

What ? Steve King of Iowa not on the list of those who voted NO? Did he die or something? Iwould have thought his would be the first name I would see on the list?

  • Melody Warbington

I’m glued, littlehouse. Still waiting for Sessions or Shelby to show up.

Paul & Cruz have brilliantly exposed Obama and his agenda on many more issues than just the question at hand. They’ve also exposed a few GOP senators who do not have the fortitude to stand with them.

  • checkmate2012

Cruz et al are awesome and can’t give them enough kudos, starting with Rand Paul. Is he giving up now?

  • Brian Andersen

I agree with that. He has been a regular stalwart in opposing and trying to repeal / defund Obamacare. His absence is curious.
