The South Carolina 1st Congressional District Special Election Primary Open Thread.

At the moment, it looks like a runoff is likely: Mark Sanford is ahead, but he’s only getting about 35% of the vote.  Will link to updated results when I get a good one. [UPDATE: Politico's results are here.]

Moe Lane

PS: The Democrat nominee will be Elizabeth Colbert Busch; based on the fact that she’s getting less votes than Sanford and the general makeup of the SC-01 electorate, I don’t think that she’s going to win this election. [Further UPDATE: here's the AP feed.  Based on my eyeballing of previous primary election results, the most charitable conclusion to be drawn is that Ms. Busch is going to do just well enough to break many Democrats' hearts in the end; it's more likely that she's going to crash and burn.]

Here is why we support him. For just a sec, lets forget the affair. Out of all the candidates, Sandford was and is a staunch proven conservative willing to fight not only the other side, but the fat cats on our own side. He never took crap from the senate or the democrats who called themselves republicans. Not to say that there were not other conservatives in the race, but none to the level of Sandford.

Now you add back in the affair, he paid a heavy price for it, he has sought forgiveness from both his family and the citizens of the state, his family not only has moved on and forgave him, but they are his biggest supporters and that includes his ex wife. There is a difference between living in sin and having committed sin. And if the family or victim has forgiven and accepted the person back into their good graces, not only is it not our place to continue punishing them, but it is also not our place to refuse the same forgiveness.

But cook our goose a second time and we are done with you.

I read the pre-election posts here including EE’s. As I said in my comment above, let the people speak and decide. I’m not here to pass judgement as I’m not qualified but still find it a bit weird.
    .
But stranger things have happened and I won’t even start the list…ok, just one: the crack mayor from D.C.- talk about forgiveness!
    .
It’s ya’lls state so let the votes be counted is my opinion. If Sanford wins, then he deserves to because of the vote count. I’m all for that.

Is the SC GOP so FUBAR that the best they can do is an disgraced ex-governor??

Very sad reflection on a state that was once a beacon of conservatism.

  • patsydecline

The DC mayor was a Democrat. Since when do the baseless actions of scumbag Democrats serve as an example for the GOP?

“Weird” is being kind. It is sad and pathetic that the SC GOP can do no better than this.

  • veritaseequitas

Sanford is the best we can do? Puhleeese. This is why Republican is the party of Losers. B/c we think people like Mark Sanford are wunderbar. When is the GOP going to step out, take a chance and elect Conservative newcomers who are actually unafraid and effective, and not the tired old entrenched crap?
Sweet Lord, protect us from stupidity and fear.

  • veritaseequitas

You cannot forget the affair. The affair points out how self-serving, selfish, untrustworthy and stupid the man is.

Why do you think Bostic will be unable to unite the anti-Sanford vote? Not being from South Carolina I don’t know anything about any of these candidates besdies Sanford, but normally I’d say an ex-governor in a field where no one else tops 15% suggests that most people were voting either for or against the ex-governor.

Whoa! Way to change the subject. You said as follows:
” they are his biggest supporters and that includes his ex wife.”
I could not find any evidence of his ex supporting him. Maybe you can enlighten all of us on how Jenny Sanford supported Mark Sanford in the primary. I could not find any evidence that she supported him in any way in the primary.

  • PowerToThePeople

Changed the subject? You give some NY article, that by the way is nothing but a recopy of another article, the author gives his opinion on what she meant, and you think that made it fact.

She gave an interview to FoxCarolina where she clearly stated she supported Mark, not some round the bush crap, straight forward he is forgiven, he has sought repentance, I support his return. Her worrying that a run for office will dredge up stuff and possibly affect her sons is quite normal and has nothing to do with her not supporting him.

Folks just remember that while Power is willing to forgive the affair he doesn’t care about issues we really care about such as a balanced budget or the federal reserve printing $85 billion dollars a month.
As long as he likes the candidate (and I guess he likes Standford) he will pretend he doesn’t have faults. But then he has a different standard if he thinks the candidate does have faults.
And fyi when I called him on the two issues he called me names.
Just ignore the support he wants to give Stanford.

PTTP I looked and could not find the Fox Carolina article you referenced where Jenny Sanford gave an interview where she “clearly stated that she supported Mark”. I did find 2 other articles where the New York magazine article I referenced, is credited from Hot Air and Moelane, com:

Perhaps you can give us a link to the Fox Carolina article.
