New York ‘s Abortion Business Operates Without Regulation

If Kermit Gosnell had worked in Manhattan, he'd be a free man today

In 2012 over 130,000 abortions were carried out in the 225 abortion facilities that operate in New York. These facilities are subject to inspection. When the pro-life Chiaroscuro Foundation asked the NY State Health Department for information on those inspections, information which is supposed to be public record, they were stonewalled. The Foundation sued under the state freedom of informations act and the results were astounding.

According to the pro-abortion Guttmacher Institute counts 225 abortion facilities in New York, but only 25 of them are subject to state inspections. But even among those 25 the results were abysmal. From the New York Post, NYC’s tanning salons inspected more regularly than abortion clinics:

Eight of the 25 clinics were never inspected over the 2000-12 span, five were inspected just once, and eight were inspected only twice or three times — meaning once every four or six years.

A total of just 45 inspections were conducted at all 25 facilities during the 12-year period.

By comparison, city eateries are inspected every year and graded, while a new law requires tanning salons to undergo inspections at least once every other year.

This is insanity. Abortion is a pseudo-medical procedure that in a best case scenario results in a 50% mortality rate. It is invasive. It is rife with potential for permanent injury to the patients who survive. We know from experience with Kermit Gosnell’s Philadelphia clinic what happens when abortion facilities are not subject to state inspection. They are in business to turn a quick buck off human misery, cleanliness and hygiene are unaffordable luxuries in most cases.

When GOP gubernatorial candidate, Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino, accused the Cuomo regime of neglecting its duties, Andrew Cuomo (who I view as the Democrat frontrunner for president in 2016, not a wizened septuagenarian Hillary Clinton) promptly threw his health commissioner, Nirav Shah, under the bus:

State Health Commissioner Dr. Nirav Shah is stepping down amid criticism over his agency’s failure to conduct regular inspections of abortion clinics and for delays in releasing a long-awaited fracking study.

Word of Shah’s resignation late Wednesday came as the Health Department announced it was scrambling to inspect 25 abortion clinics ”within the coming days” — after The Post reported that it hadn’t visited many of them in more than a decade.

But the scandal continues.

In its first statement on the issue Wednesday, the Health Department admitted that it usually inspects abortion clinics when they receive a complaint, rather than conducting regular reviews.

“The State Department of Health vigorously and aggressively investigates any and all allegations of physician misconduct, or complaints against a facility under its direct supervision. This includes 22 complaints since 2005 against the 25 DOH-regulated facilities that provide reproductive health services – all of which will also be subjected to re-inspection within the coming days,” said Health Department spokesman Bill Schwarz.

We are supposed to take them at their word on this, yet their history of performance gives us no great comfort that they will do their duty. So long as the NY State Health Department treats abortion facilities as a special case and suppresses all information on the frequency and outcomes of their inspections, it will fall to the efforts of individuals and private institutions, like Chiaroscuro Foundation, to provide the public with information that the state should be providing as a matter of course.
