Randall Munroe is right about the First Amendment

Bill of Right

Randall Munroe went off on First Amendment issues in his xkcd comic last week. He’s absolutely right too, when he says “If you’re yelled at, boycotted, have your show cancelled, or get banned from an Internet community, your free speech rights aren’t being violated.

I would just suggest we need to take this further than I suspect he predicted.

Let’s be honest: despite Munroe’s dalliances with Ron Paul in the comic, when politics do creep up into the comic, there’s a definite leftward tilt to them. So I’m pretty sure his readers are thinking of Phil Robertson at A&E, OkCupid, Tim Cook, and other times in recent days when the homosexual “marriage” lobby has taken stands against people.

But let’s take this all the way. Let’s apply the first amendment to all of us, not just some of us. You may believe yourself to have a right to have a homosexual “marriage,” but if a baker, a photographer, or a hall owner is showing you the door, it’s because the people listening to you think you have no business forcing them to take part in your event.

Your right to swing your fist ends at my nose. Your right to get “married” ends when I have to join in.
