Pearl Harbor, 9-11, and the Vicious Evil of Conspiracy Theories
“You gotta get on the web. It’s got all the best conspiracy theories!” – A Local Radio Station’s Ad for its website.
When Malcolm X gave his impassioned speech “God’s Judgement of White America,” he got exactly the reaction he was probably looking for. He delivered his oration on 4 December 1963 and it wasn’t the speech that garnered national attention. It was a question and answer session X held afterward that blew up and went worldwide before there was the Internet to accelerate such things. Malcolm X was asked what he thought about President Kennedy having been shot and responded that it was “chickens coming home to roost.” This ill-advised political gaffe launched 1,000 Blame America First conspiracy theories.
Patrick J. Buchanan’s alternative history of WW II is just such an example. Like me, Buchanan is no great fan of FDR. Unlike me, he also claims that FDR needlessly maneuvered the US to enter WW II which he believed we could have watched from the cheap seats. Not being one to get needlessly bunged over The Rape of Nanking or the forced servitude of Korean “Comfort Women,” Buchanan blames the US for escalating WW II in the Pacific below.
At a Nov. 25 meeting of FDR’s war council, Secretary of War Henry Stimson’s notes speak of the prevailing consensus: “The question was how we should maneuver them [the Japanese] into … firing the first shot without allowing too much danger to ourselves.” “We can wipe the Japanese off the map in three months,” wrote Navy Secretary Frank Knox.
WW II and other previous events are not the only major events to be subjected to Blame America First Historiography. Current Democratic Presidential Candidate, Lincoln Chaffee joined a Truther organization entitled 911 Truth. Here are some of the pressing issues Chaffee wanted to get to the bottom of once and for all.
“Al-CIA-da?” The longstanding relationship between US intelligence networks and radical Islamists. Flight 93. Did the Shanksville crash occur at 10:06 (according to a seismic report) or 10:03 (according to the 9/11 Commission)? Does the Commission wish to hide what happened in the last three minutes of the flight, and if so, why? Pentagon Strike. How was it possible the Pentagon was hit 1 hour and 20 minutes after the attacks began? Why was there no response from Andrews Air Force Base, just 10 miles away.
Now of course, serious adults don’t believe FDR sat around the White House wondering how to provoke a huge war with Japan for the sake of Aggregate Demand. It’s no more logical or reasonable than the infamous Ward Churchill screed “On the Roosting of Chickens. Some People Push Back.” We all know that Darth Cheney would never allow his puppeteer stooges at OPEC mess up Haliburton’s fracking deal with a nasty petroleum price war. He would find their lack of faith disturbing. It’s just not part of what Lincoln Chaffee’s group of whack-doodles termed Dick Cheney’s treasonous agenda. So no, these people are not just true believers unraveling a difficult and complicated skein of logical entanglement.
What these people are engaged in is a malicious and deliberate campaign of applied falsehood. Whether it be Patrick J. Buchanan from the “Alternative Right” or Lincoln Chaffee and his merry band of Two-Bong Hit Arnold Toynbees on the Left; they are deliberately endeavoring to destroy the good name of The United States of America. This is historically similar to what happened to The Spanish Empire after Bartolome’ de las Casas published A Short Account of the Destruction of the Indies in 1552.
This tragic story of how Spain mistreated indigenous cultures surrounding its colonies became a meme which some claim still leads to a prejudice against Hispanic people today. This legend of Hispanics being a particularly barbaric and evil race of people was termed La Leyenda Negra – The Black Legend. The Black Legend, and de las Casas are related in the following fashion.
We will consider the Black Legend at much greater length in subsequent chapters, but suffice it say for now that it was composed of two parts: one, the Spanish were uniquely cruel and inhumane in the conquest of the Americas; and two, the accounts of the Spanish conquest by Las Casas contained the evidence to substantiate the truth of the Black Legend.
In essence, people like Lincoln Chaffee and Patrick J. Buchanan are knowingly engaged in denigrating America the same way in which Bartolome’ de las Casas accidentally denigrated The Spanish Empire. Thus we should not be surprised when the test pictured at the link here turns up in US public schools. This is not an oversight, this is not an accident. This is a deliberate and malicious attempt to control narrative and make The United States look like an evil nation that deserved 9-11 like how chickens come home to roost. I somehow doubt that chickens roosting were Malcom X’s final thought when the bullet terminated his life.
