Ryan Reality Check

My ultra-liberal sister lives in Paul Ryan’s Congressional district in Wisconsin, so naturally I was curious to hear her take on the newly minted Romney-Ryan team.

As expected, I got an earful of Democratic talking points. However, what she said should not be downplayed because you will hear these anti-Ryan arguments ad nauseum from now until November.

Here are her direct quotes and Romney supporters must be ready to answer these arguments.

“Romney was so stupid to pick Ryan.”

“Romney was pressured by the right wing to choose Ryan.”

“Romney made a risky, risky choice.”

“I do not see Ryan as presidential.”

“All the negatives about Ryan are ready to go after him.”

“Where are the pluses (for Ryan) I do not see any.”

“The race now will be all about the Ryan budget.”

“His budget adds to the deficit in 20 years.”

“Ryan wants to cut Meals on Wheels and school lunch programs.”

“All Ryan will do is cut entitlements without raising tax revenue.”

“Romney will lose even bigger now in Wisconsin.”

“Even the Catholic hierarchy is against Ryan.”

Now from the Republican camp, a friend of mine who knows Ryan very well says that with Ryan on the ticket, “The campaign will be about serious issues.” He also told me that “Ryan is a no BS kind of guy and will stay on message.”

Yup, but will “staying on message” feed into what my sister now says the race will be all about — the Ryan budget — to the detriment of the GOP?  She is sure that Romney selecting Ryan as his VP is really bad news for Mitt Romney and all Republicans.

Only time will tell if my left-wing sister is right.

In no particular order, here is what Team Obama is already saying about Ryan, and what it means and how to respond.

    1. Ryan is not presidential
    - 14 years in Congress, when Obama had … 3?!?!

    2. Ryan never wrote a paycheck
    - odd and hypocritical but it never stopped the Democrats. seriously, they WILL go there and not note the irony that neither did Biden or Obama have private sector experience of note, and that Ryan balances a ticket oozing with private sector experience, which Obama Team is attacking as well. In short, no matter who you are and what you’ve done, if you are GOP – it’s evil.

    3. Ryan went to college on Social security
    - this reminds me of the awful attacks on Clarence Thomas (“how dare he be against affirmative action when he was for it!”)
    - apparently its a crime to benefit from the govt and not be locked in with socialist ideology

    4. The race will be about the Ryan budget
    - GOOD!
    - why good, if the election now includes all the ugly things they can say about the Ryan budget “cutting this, cutting that …” etc. Reason is simple – it becomes an election about IDEAS and Romney/Ryan has an advantage because we will be talking about things more serious that phony allegations about romney’s character.

    5. Ryan budget wont balance for 28 years
    - true, but Obama adds $10 trillion in debt in 10 years, so this reduces that trend and moves us to balance

    6. Ryan budget will gut (insert favored program) … invariably, these are NOT the boondoggles and programs that take up hundreds of billions but “Meals on Wheels” and other popular ‘statue of liberty’ type propgrams
    - C’mon gets serious, we have $4 trillion in spending and the Ryan budget is not about that but a whole lot more. Cutting spending across the board is vital.

7.Ryan will end medicare as we know it
    - This is not new. This has been a staple of Democrat demagoguery for decades, and is brought up any time the GOP tries to fix the ever-expanding entitlement system. now that Obama has blown up entitlements fully, with obamacare, a serious amount of reform is vital, and its great to know Romney wont flinch, which is what Ryan pick signals. He WILL get it done. I for one am flummoxed by the constant stream of Democrat lies and cannot adequately respond when in fact Medicare is a flawed system heading for bankruptcy and needs reform and change or it will implode. The best retort is to say just that, to say that Democrats are the one endangering the whole entitlement system through their fiscal charades trillion-dollar deficits and making promises to spend money we dont have on programs headed to fiscal waterfalls.

    8. The Newt playbook – Ryan wants to kill granny
    - Ryan, like Newt, is smart, articulate and wonky, and unlike Newt has the normal family and lack of personal skeletons that will make ‘dog on the car’ attacks muted. But that wont stop Team Obama from personal attacks. Any GOP architect who cant be Stupid(TM) must be Evil(TM). They cant pick the Palin/Quayle/Bachmann template off the shelf, so they go with the Newt one. Ryan will be the new Newt (see 1996), and he has served up the right-wing budget to play the role. See anyone not wedded to the Obama plan for ever expanding Goverment is all about hobbling the BreveNewWorld of GovernmentGoodiesForAll,

    9. Ryan voted for everything Bush wanted
    - never mind that Obama voted for TARP too. That the Democrats didnt undo Medicare Part D or No Child Left Behind, etc. This is all about simplistic demonization and if Bush=bad, then every Republican=Bush all the time. talking about policies of what works and what doesnt and what Democrats actually want will debunk and deflate this, or at least devolve it into the choice.

    The CHOICE:
At the end of the day, the attacks need to be rebutted, and it will end up with a choice: Romney/Ryan will make choices that are better for America because they will help grow the economy and create more jobs via a less burdensome Government. Every attack on Ryan is really an attack on the IDEA OF LIMITING GOVERNMENT AND GIVING TAXPAYERS MORE OF THEIR OWN MONEY.

Obama’s policies are proven failures and the policies of free enterprise and limited Government are proven successes. Only by distorting and lying about what the choice is about can the left hope to win. With Ryan’s help, the Romney/Ryan ticket will make the real choice front and center with the voters, and that is the path to victory.

Don’t compare, on the question of Presidential qualification, Obama to Ryan, but Biden to Ryan. For demeanor and vision, Ryan is the “anyone but Biden” better choice.

Ask how long until Obama signs a balanced budget… or any budget, for that matter.

The only one of your mothers’ points that has any validity is that the election is now about the Ryan Roadmap…. and as Freedoms Truth said above, GOOD!

That one member of Congress voted for it…

      • emptybucket

Obama our president, has not been able to submit a budget that even one member of Congress has signed onto. The dems have rejected Obama’s expansive budgets 100%. Why isn’t this a GOP talking point, so to speak, it is a very serious flaw in Obama…the inability to even create a budget, or if created, is so outlandish that not even one member of his own party will vote for it.

I’m sure she had an answer prepared no matter who was chosen. Why do we care what liberals think about our nominees?

  • emptybucket

kind of sister? Hopefully you will eventually get her to do some deeper thinking than what people are saying. It’s somewhat like that Democrat who can’t seem to answer any direct questions without side stepping or throwing back an insult. It is great that the two of you can talk politics and still stay civil to one another. I’d say there is definitely hope!

Most Libs I know are so angry they can’t even listen…not that they listened much to me before! Ha Ha. I’ve had it with the talking points and cut them off.

Appreciated your diary, am sure there are going to be a lot more one sentence talking points against Ryan over the next few weeks. Shudder at the thought of what the media is going to do to him. Maybe because he is a man, not a woman it won’t be a Palin replay. Such a shame what was done to her, whether you agreed with her or not.

Let us know if you sis calls you up with an epiphahy that opens her mind up. In the mean time, just love her like you always have.

if Obama shot someone to death in front of his Greek columns for the world to see, they’d still vote for him. There are just some people out there who don’t care about facts and will defend the liberal talking points and mindset as the unsinkable Titanic slips into the depths. With the libs in my family, I have come to the conclusion that since they have never admitted being wrong about ANYTHING, they’re not going to start now by saying voting for O was a mistake. I’ve just learned to bite my tongue and live with it.
