Harrah’s Pressures Staff to Vote for Reid

His Campaign Works with former DNC Staffer to turn out Casino Vote

Harry Reid is locked in a tight election contest with Sharron Angle, and his campaign is pulling out all the stops to improve his chances for re-election. According to National Review, that includes pressuring Harrah’s Casinos to dragoon their staff into voting for Reid:

Executives at the casino giant Harrah’s pushed company employees to vote early in an all-out effort to help the Harry Reid campaign, according to internal emails obtained by Battle ‘10.

The stepped-up effort began Wednesday when a Reid staffer sent an email pleading for help to Harrah’s top lobbyist, Jan Jones. Soon after, Marybel Batjer, Harrah’s vice president of public policy and communications, distributed that plea via email to executives throughout the company.

The Reid campaign staffer, whose name was removed in the email Batjer sent to Harrah’s executives, said “ANYTHING” would be done to help with the company’s get out the vote effort. The staffer cited the fact that 1,100 MGM employees had already voted and indicated dissatisfaction with the turnout from Harrah’s.

Jones is the former Mayor of Las Vegas, and “has held senior positions with the Nevada state arm of the Democratic National Committee.” Her willingness to pressure her employer to pull out all the stops to help Reid would not be a surprise.

P.S. – If the Republicans take the House of Representatives, California’s Darrell Issa will be chair of the House Government Reform and Oversight Committee. I know he cares passionately about the right of Americans to cast their votes according to their own consciences, without heavy-handed pressure from their bosses. If he becomes Chairman, Issa maybe oughta hold hearings on this.

demanding their folks vote for the candidate the bosses want is so corrupt and unethical! I wonder if any of those folks will vote for Angle just to maintain independence? I guess not……….

      they would be suppressed.

My folks were big time and loyal Harrah’s customers. When I came of age so did I become one. Today, after reading about their strong-arming employees in Nevada I cut-up my Total Rewards card and e-mailed management a nastygram. While Harrah’s has lots of other properties in Nevada and elsewhere, I will not set a foot or another dollar down in any of them.

In this depressed economy can they really afford to lose another customer?
      Well, they did.

Based on that NETF complaint that was posted here Thursday night, it looks like casino employees were (at least initially) skipping out on day trips intended for them to participate in early voting. So, that’s at least one sign that many of these employees now being strong-armed were already rather predisposed to be disobedient.

Harrah’s also contributed $75,000 to The Patriot Majority, who ran fake Tea Party ads against Sharron Angle. And who is the “Mr. Astroturf” behind The Patriot Majority? Craig Varoga was former communication director for Senator Harry Reid in the 1990s.

The independently-verifiable evidence is available here.

Las Vegas and New Orleans. Spent a couple grand. Harrah’s will get no more of my entertainment dollars. I may be only one in my boycott….but if this gets out, we can be many.

My husband is attending a bachelor party at Harrah’s later this year….I am calling the groom ( my cousin!) and telling him he needs to change the venue.

He is a Lt. Col. Allen West campaigner, so I know he’ll be happy to change it!

Have to go there in a few weeks myself. Was looking at rates a few nights ago, was thinking about staying at Paris, but didnt book at the time.

Since Paris is a Harrah’s property, I’ll now be staying elsewhere.

Jan Jones is the senior Harrah’s VP in charge of their Internet Gambling legalization effort in Washington. Harrah’s has been pushing all year long to legalize Internet gambling nationwide, bringing a casino (legally) into every family’s living room and den. They own the extremely lucrative World Series of Poker license as well as have the best player rewards club with locations in over a dozen states. No American casino is better positioned to take advantage of legalized Internet gambling than Harrahs.

Additionally, Harrah’s is planning an IPO early next year for Harrah’s Interactive, and legalizing Internet gambling would tremendously boost the stock value and make megabucks for the company. Plus, what better job for Harry Reid to go into after involuntary retirement than to be the head federal lobbyist for Harrah’s to lobby the writing of regualtions by the feds on the bill he sneaks through in a few weeks. A couple of million for that, plus a piece of the IPO, and voila, Harry is even more set for his ‘golden’ years.

Here is how it is going to come down. In the first 6 months of this year, Harrah’s and illegal overseas Internet gambling sites spent $10 million pushing HR 2267, the Barney Frank bill to legalize Internet gambling. They got the bill out of the committee, but pressure from the Blue Dogs and others kept it from being called to the floor.

Now that they are blocked in the House, their strategy rests with Reid. Word is that Reid staff and Harrah’s worked together to write a bill during the August congressional recess, and decided to keep it under wraps while Frank’s bill took the fire. They plan on introducing it in the lame duck session.

(With respect to my libertarian friends who think Internet gambling should be legal, I appreciate your opinion but I can guarantee you that the way the legislation will be crafted will result in further job losses in the US and reward illegal overseas sites who have breaking US laws for years by giving them a get out of jail free card. It would be like the feds issuing Al Capone the first liquor license at the end of Prohibition because he has the best distribution network)

The Joint Tax Committee says that legalized Internet gambling could raise $42 billion over the next ten years. So the Reid/Harrah’s/overseas plan is to stick a rider at the very last minute into a tax or spending bill during the lame duck session as a way to ‘pay for’ some additional Democrat spending to pay off their election allies. With Reid in the catbird’s seat for the final weeks of the Congress, they figure there is no way it can be stopped, and Harrah’s and the illegal overseas sites who have been pushing legalization for years will make billions and Harry gets a cushy sendoff from his corporate friends.

This is why you are seeing managment at Harrah’s literally doing everything they can to re-elect Reid, even getting in bed with the strange bedfellows of their employee unions. It’s all about the money to be made on the Internet, and having a puppet in DC to pull the trigger on their plan during the lame duck.

I wonder if the union bosses and Harrah’s people told the working stiffs they are hounding to go vote for Reid today that the reason they are pushing for their man Harry so hard is to get some legislation that may well cost some of them their jobs. It takes thousands to run a vibrant casino, but only about half a dozen to set up an Internet gambling website in a offshore tax haven . . . .

And called her Jay by mistake. Jan Jones is the ramrod on this for Harrah’s, she even discussed their plan for the Internet last November when she was on a panel at the Global Gambling Expo in Las Vegas. I believe they figure should Reid win or lose, their last minute heroics to try to save him should warrant the political/legislative payoff they are looking for.

My fellow conservatives, I wouldn’t sweat this story too much. I’ve had the displeasure to work for this POS outfit and believe me when I say that most people who work for Harrahs can’t stand the company. In fact, I’d venture to say that only those who have only those who have the predication to vote Dem would listen to Harrah’s company line. Harrah’s is dispised by most of its employees for their nickle and dime attitude toward their staff.

This happened to me once at a law firm in San Diego where I was clerking. One of the partners called everyone in the firm into the library, shut the doors, introduced the candidate, and told us we were expected to vote for him. The candidate was present in the library. They were Dems, of course. Only time in my life I have ever witnesses anything like that.

    1. Despite the rhetoric, I don’t know that this is really “strong-arming” anybody to vote in any particular way. Employers, just like anybody else, should have the right to ask their employees to vote for a particular candidate – it’s persuasion, not coercion. Ultimately, that Harrah’s employee is in the voting booth with their own conscience, and there’s no particular reason that among the factors they consider is whom their employers think is good for the business.

Generally, btw, it’s the left that cries that speech is coercion, which is of course why we need campaign finance “reform,” the “Fairness Doctrine,” etc.

    2. That said, there may be some legal issues, if it turns out that this amounts to a coordinated expenditure on Harrah’s part to support the Reid campaign. That would make it an illegal corporate contribution. It’s not apparent that this is what happened, but worth looking into (coordination regs are a mess, so it’s not as clear-cut as one might think). It’s being looked into.

p.s. Here is one story that does indicate this qualifies as coordination, and would therefore be illegal: http://www.sfexaminer.com/opinion/blogs/beltway-confidential/reid-staffer-coordinates-with-nevada-union-to-put-headlock-on-voters-106532218.html

The Harrah’s mouthpiece, Marybel Batjer sounded familar, so after a quick search I found this oldie but goodie in California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s 2003 press releases:

Governor-elect Schwarzenegger today announced that he will appoint Marybel Batjer as his Cabinet Secretary. Governor-elect Schwarzenegger today announced that he will appoint Marybel Batjer as his Cabinet Secretary. “Marybel Batjer’s executive level experience and diverse background will be a tremendous benefit to my new administration, as we work to restore California’s promise,” said Schwarzenegger. Batjer has served as Nevada Governor Kenny Guinn’s chief of staff since December 2000. During her tenure, she supervised 20 Nevada cabinet officers and administered the state’s education, tax, environmental, transportation, health, welfare, communications, land-use, and business policies. Prior to serving Governor Guinn, Batjer was appointed Undersecretary for the California Business, Transportation and Housing Agency during Governor Pete Wilson’s administration and also served as Deputy Director for the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing. A graduate of Mills College, Batjer earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in administration legal processes and continued her graduate studies at John Hopkins University, School of Advanced International Studies where she studied international public policy. During President George H. Bush’s administration, Batjer served as Special Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs. She also served as Assistant to the Secretary of Defense and the Deputy Secretary of Defense under President Reagan, where she oversaw 1,000 appointments and was political liaison between the Department of Defense and the White House. “My appointment as Cabinet Secretary to Governor Schwarzenegger is an honor. I am pleased to have the opportunity to return to California and look forward to working with the governor’s cabinet as well as members of the legislature,” said Batjer. The Cabinet Secretary is a direct liaison between the governor and cabinet members, including all agency directors and department directors. Batjer’s appointment does not require Senate confirmation. Batjer is a Republican.

I spend a lot of money in LV, I will make sure not to spend a dime at their garbage properties ever again

Steve Wynn will continue to happily get my entertainment money– at least we know where he stands. I actually admire him for being maybe the first executive to have the cojones to speak out against BarryO when everyone else was still scared of speaking up.
