They will now witness the end of Cain….(insert darthvader theme music here)

  • lucasblack

I’m not sure when this was agreed to, but the timing couldn’t be better for Gingrich. There’s extra interest in Cain right now because of the events of the last week, but many of those watching will be re-considering their support of him. Cain is a good guy, but he won’t be able to top Newt in a format like this – I suspect he agreed to it back before he was leading the polls. If Cain’s people are looking for a new candidate, Newt is a natural place to jump. And Newt has been nothing but respectful to Cain (and everyone else) so unlike Perry where there is some bad blood, people would feel okay about jumping to Newt.

lucasblack, nice post. Another poster (conservativeparrothead I think) made an excellent point in that many young independent voters are drawn to Newt’s intelligence and depth. Our side needs as many independent voters as we can get. Perry will not draw independents along like Cain, Romney, or Gingrich. I know the resident PerryPhiles will scream “Why Not ?! Please. You know why not. Just stop already.
      Newt Gingrich/Nikki Haley 2012!

Pick up my post on Uh Oh Campaign Finance. When this debate is over with, I suspect that Newt will rise in the polls and Herman…will go down slowly…but he will go down. Gingrich will finally get answers on his 999 proposal and show it for what it is. This thing will never pass Congress and besides that…Cain lacks the wisdom to get it passed. I expect people who have cable will learn a lot about Herman Cain during these debates. The MSM will pick up on national TV because of Herman’s notoriety.

However, if he (Cain) does poorly, expect Fox News to carry his water stating that he is exhausted after his strenuous episode with the Politico stories…all of which could have been taken care of if…Herman Cain had got out in front of it, admitted to the incident (not the validity) but the incident and said that there was a settlement to allow the NRA to be done with it. However, Cain chose a muddled route which caused everyone to get a bad taste in their mouth. Watch for the Sunday shows to be full of Cain’s problems…AND NOTHING ABOUT THE OTHER CANDIDATES OR THEIR SOLUTIONS, this will also allow Romney to stay below the radar.

With the style of tonight’s debate, and the topic being the economy and entitlement reform, Newt will be in his element. There is no question that Newt will press Cain on his 999 plan, and will most certainly highlight the problems with 999, and will most likely highlight how it isn’t as easy or simple as 999. Cain won’t be able to fall back on telling people to go to his website, or that someone is misrepresenting his plan. He will have to explain what are still outstanding questions, particularly how he thinks he can get it passed with a deeply divided Congress.

There is no question that Fox, and some others will make excuses for whatever his performance is tonight. Most likely he will be excused once again because “he is not a politician.”

As other’s have pointed out, Cain has been sucking the oxygen out of all the political air, whether the news/topic is negative or positive. Yes, Romney is benefiting the most because he, and his flip flops are not in the news, so he can safely hide away until he is anointed.

The other candidates are hard pressed to get much ink, or much air time these days.

    • texasroots

Faux News is also carrying Romney’s water. You don’t hear anyone there complaining about Romney being the only one not to appear on Chris Wallace’s show. Perry was blasted for even suggesting that he would not be in all debates. I saw Brit Hume say that Newt is history, going nowhere. Then, a few days later, said Newt could make a comeback. Are these people having mental breakdowns?

I mean, I am sure it’ll be a bunch of repetitive posts of how bad Cain looks, but I’m still for it.

Don’t get me wrong, I like Cain; but while his appeal is a mile wide; his depth on the issues is an inch deep.

There is no way he can hold up.

I certainly wish he was better prepared for the presidency as he may be the most likeable GOP candidate and a whole lot of people will still vote for whoever they like the most; but if Newt doesn’t take him down here; Romney will at some point and Obama definitely would(which would mean the niughtmare would continue for America).

    • avagreen

such that he won’t be able to carry his end of the bargain.

Or, he really is so self-deluded that he
      1) thinks he actually can out-debate Newt,

      2) thinks that the networks like FOX will cover for him and his mistakes, and his fans will willingly accept this (including Hannity),

      and, lastly…..
      3) thinks that the earwig feeding him answers won’t be detected.

      • jrmax13

The above poster wrote “I’m half-way expecting that something calamitous will happen to Cain on the way to the forum…”
        Excuse me ? !

        • Scope

You know darn well that Ava means finding an excuse, any excuse to back out from a debate with the best debater in the field currently, bar none.

      • Scope

Because his hat size has far outpaced his level of common sense on a scale of 1-10. Agreeing to, and then keeping his commitment to the debate with Gingrich, when he can hardly afford any more negative press, especially on substantive issues, is proof positive of how deluded one can talk oneself into being. I will watch it, but I think it is going to be painful to see Cain as the mop Newt will turn him into.

Even if Newt doesn’t win the nomination and challenge Obama to do the same debates, there isn’t going to be one again after tonight unless Newt really overplays it and looks dominering.

More than likely, Newt will look like a natural and take down Cain either a peg or several and Obama’s advisors will not let Obama do one, no matter how badly Obama thinks he can stroll in and wipe the floor with whoever does win the GOP nomination.

LSU and Bama play every year and you’re going to be able to see every highlight on espn; this may be a one time thing.

And if Newt really shines, I’m not going to miss it and have to track down the rebroadcast.

      • jrmax13

I thought I read somewhere that Newt and Herman have been close friends for many years. Both having ties to Georgia. I wonder how (if at all) this will affect the debate.

      • Xasteius

I have no dog in that hunt anyway,

  • Tbone

There is only one other person in America who thinks they could debate Newt and that is Barack Obama.

  • texasroots

I will not watch. Cain will probably accuse Perry again of leaking the story. This is way beyond ridiculous. I got better things to do. I am sick of hearing people talk, talk, talk and talk some more.

    • Xasteius

      qwerty

  • themamabear

Learned a lot about both candidates. Newt is the guy. Cain for VP, maybe.

    • papabear

Newt rocked it! It seems obvious that he has thought deeply about the issues and solutions. He is extremely articulate.

Cain looked much better than I expected. I suspect he would have “won” if he had been facing any other candidate in the (R) field.

  • conservativeparrothead

Just got done watching it. Had a lot of different topics, many of which dealt with entitlements: No 999 discussion or taxes in general. No immigration talk. No education talk.

Basically the 90 minutes was Medicare, Medicaid, Health Care costs and Social Security. Im sure Im missing something, but overall that was the main points covered.

You can tell both men get along well, good discussion of opinions and ideas on many different topics. One topic I thought Newt was strong on and I believe it got him the biggest ovation of the night which was that you dont get something for nothing. If you are on medicaid, you will be tracked and there needs to be a way that costs of an aspirin are not billed as a trip to the emergency room and that those who continually abuse the system are stopped also that in order to receive unemployment you must begin training/schooling or that if you live in government housing, it is your job to help maintain it.

I think this is a message that will sell well across America as Conservatives begin the conversation to the American people: The free ride is over!!!

    • iidvbii

Newt looked very good. Polished , relaxed with a firm grip of the facts and relevant information. I agreed with just about everything he said. I think it was an exceptional night for Newt. Of course this is what he does best so no real surprise but definitely not a let down.

Cain managed to spend the entire night without disagreeing with Newt, a wise choice. I felt most his answers where thin, talking points that really didn’t add much to the discussion. Then I really didn’t expect much from Cain and I was not disappointed.

I think Newt definitely contrasted himself in a very favorable way.

      • gekster

Newt did his homework, and was confident in his answers to the questions.
It seamed like CaIn wanted Newt to take some questions first, so he could get a clue to what an answer might be.
It also seamed like Cain was talking to boared members, not an audience,
Ya can’t fault him for that, that’s what he is good at.

I’m still not sure I understand why there is so much name calling of candidates – as if this were a horse race and we all had to have a favorite horse and all other horses were the enemy. That seems to play right into the progressive’s hands.

I really enjoyed this debate, this debate format and how it allowed the candidates to spend time actually discussing ideas and principles rather than searching for campaign ad sound bites. We are at an historic point in our Republic – if we do not get leadership that will fight to implement conservative solutions we may not survive as a free people. We need these (somewhat) Lincoln-Douglas style debates to bring those conservative ideas to the forefront of the nation.

Debates such as these will serve several purposes. They:
-Bring conservative ideals forward – repeatedly – so that they become familiar to a larger section of the nation.
-Force the candidates to the right – so that even if we get the ‘wrong’ person in the white house they may be forced to do the right thing.
-Ensure that the ideas are rigorously vetted by the conservative movement, which should make the ideas better.

I hope that the tea party and/or other groups host more such debates – debates that force the candidates to give more than sound bite responses; debates in which we can begin to see the depth and thoughfulness of the candidates ideas on government. And finally, debates in which we can determine whether the candidates really do believe in conservative ideals or whether they are merely singing words to a tune they don’t like but that they know the audience wants to hear.
