And the winner is…

I have been absent from Redstate for quite some time, I have missed some of you greatly.

Fred!! -  2012

I know it isn’t a choice – too bad.

Seriously, I’ve waited throughout this pre-primary season: weighing the candidates, watching performances and plans, and examining reactions.  I am now ready to announce what the blogo-sphere has no doubt been breathlessly waiting for – my choice for GOP nominee.

To start, let me note that I have given to three campaigns this season.  First, I gave to Michele Bachmann before she officially announced to encourage her to get in.  She is my Congresswoman (at least for now, stupid redistricting), and is a conservative firebrand.  From the start I did not see her gaining the nomination, but knew that her voice on the national stage would be a strong one.  I suspected that she wasn’t ready to compete at this level, and I think the record has shown that to be true.  I still love Michele, but I do not support her in the primaries.

Second, I gave to Herman Cain.  He was the first candidate I remember “liking” on FaceBook.  What I knew of him at the time sounded good, and having political outsiders in the race seemed a good idea from the start.  I had a wait and see attitude, and actually gave to his campaign AFTER I dismissed him as my candidate of choice.  I believe his 999 plan is awesome – I don’t like the specifics and see glaring holes, but it is so much better than the non-plans the GOP has been putting forward for a long time.  While we can all agree that 999 won’t happen, it is a much better starting point than others’.  I gave to him after the sexual harassment news came out and as it became clear that he was being savaged for political reasons.  Although I don’t want him to be our nominee, I like him and see good things in his future and did not want a precedent of character assassination choosing our nominee.  Like Michele, he isn’t ready to compete at this level, with a message that isn’t focused enough to get the job done.  Given his age, he may not get the chance to compete at this level, but I don’t think he is done.  I’d like to see him as an advocate like Sarah Palin, or taking another run at Senator or House member, even a cabinet post would be a good use of his talents and knowledge base.

Tim Pawlenty was my first pretty solid choice for the nomination.  Though I had reservations about him because of his leftward slide as MN-GOV, he did well and was a likeable, relatively conservative guy.  I think his leaving the race when he did was ill-advised but principled.  By doing that, he has preserved his reputation for future runs.  (Endorsing Mitt Romney afterwards didn’t do him any favors in my eyes though).

Jon Huntsman, Rick Santorum, Thad McCotter, and various others.  None of them are serious candidates.  Not that I blame them for putting their hat in the ring in a crazy year where the rules are in flux, but they just aren’t real contenders.

Newt Gingrich is a good man, and the first national politician I met in person back in the early 90?s when he was Speaker of the House and he visited Liberty University where I was a student.  His lack of some key political skills hurt him and the movement then, and he hasn’t learned much.  Worse, he appears to think that it was his conservative ideology and not his condescending attitude that caused him to fail then.  So he has muddled his message and kept the attitude – not a winning combination.  Even worse, he was the only national figure dumb enough to hold on to the bitter end supporting Scozzafava.  Great performance from the smartest man in the room (at least from his perspective)? – FAIL.  His debate performances have been good, but I don’t feel conservatives can trust him not to get back on the couch.

Of all the candidates, the only one I could not vote for in the general, and the one I thoroughly detest, is Ron Paul.  As a full-spectrum conservative with special consideration for National Defense, I cannot stand this man’s “blame America” rhetoric and his unwillingness to defend America on the global stage.  That plus his whiny voice, his borderline conspiracy theory approach, his eagerness to identify problems(the Fed, earmarks) but un-seriousness with regard to solving them(Gold standard really?, sure gets plenty of earmarks for hating them so), and especially his followers make him an unsuitable candidate for any elected office in the United States, let alone POTUS.

I supported Mitt Romney in 2008, but only as the last remaining alternative to John McCain at the time of the Minnesota Caucuses.  I do not trust him, and believe he is not a conservative.  Were he to get elected President, it would be a crapshoot as to whether or not he would govern to the right or not.  As a candidate he is terribly lacking.  I am pretty sure his nomination would be the best thing President Obama could hope for.  It would depress the GOP base while gaining no converts from the middle and left.

So, if you are keeping track, that leaves one serious choice.  Rick Perry is my choice for the next President of the United States.  He is the third candidate I have donated to, and this time it is specifically because I want him to win.  Foremost, I trust him as a potential Commander-in-Chief.  His plans, both the economic plan and the government reform plan, are bold and inspiring.  As conservatives we know that we should paint in bold colors, not pale pastels.  His plans may not be feasible as written in the long run and it may be tough to get them through a self-interested Congress, but as a starting point, they blow everything else out of the water.  Rick Perry gets my strong, unequivocal, and unmitigated support.  I know some of you have different choices, and I know he has had some missteps on the campaign trail, but I think the choice is clear.  He meets or exceeds my requirements for the office:

x Likely strong CinC
x Bold plans
x Conservative message
x Proven conservative executive governing experience
x Charismatic
x Believes in American Exceptionalism and willing to state it

So, here it is -

Rick Perry 2012!!

Note: Although I mentioned negatives on several of the candidates, it was not my intention to drag any of them down, just explain why I have not chosen them. Other than Ron P, any of the candidates would make a fine POTUS and clearly be an improvement over the current empty suit “Occupying” the White House.   I hope that everyone intent on savaging any candidate, even Ron P, can find somewhere else to do it.  On the other hand, if you disagree with a negative I’ve stated about a candidate, feel free to build your choice up.

I have voted for Perry every time he ran for any office – never been sorry either. I’ll disagree with him sometimes, but nothing to sneeze at. The main reason is because he listens when you do disagree and most of the time will change his mind – how many politicians do that?

Another plus with Rick is his lovely, gracious wife Anita. What a perfect First Lady! Can’t wait until they move to 1600 … and I believe that is exactly what will happen in January 2013!

    Thanks for the diary.

    • theredrider

He’s keeping Newt from being the nominee.

Therefore, I whole-heartedly support Perry saying whatever he has to say to keep his supporters vested in him.

      Keep the faith.

    • pttx333

service – I’m so sorry that I did so. My granddaughter graduated basic in SC yesterday, and I’m still choked up with a combination of pride and fear for her. She’s such a beautiful and tiny little thing – refer to her as the family lovebug because she is so kind and loving. She’s a conservative young lady who is in the tank for Perry also.

May God bless you and yours!

      • onemovoter

I know it’s not Air Force because that’s down in Texas. I was just curious what branch she went in and what field. I can probably guess based on what job she has, if she would be anywhere close to a dangerous area.

I went into the Air Force in July 92 just before Clinton got into office. Lets just say for the 6 years I was in, it went from OK to miserable serving under Clinton. I got out instead of re-enlisting and used the GI bill to finish up college, which was CIS, and then the tech boom went bust in 2001. Talk about bad timing, ugh.

Well hope your granddaughter does well in the military. She will if we get Perry in there.

        • pttx333

not exactly sure what all that entails. I believe she goes to VA next. My son, her Dad, called from SC yesterday while he was waiting for her to get a mani/pedi and her hair done. LOL He said she has big blisters on her feet from the 10-mile walk with full gear they had just completed. A grandmother’s heart just breaks yet swells with pride at the same time. But this is what she chose to do, and it is her life to live. All we can do is stand by and cheer her on.

There were 17 who bombed out in her group, and I was worried that she might also. But she did well, even in her “tiny-ness” and is a fighter at heart. Not to mention one heck of a marksman – she’s been deer hunting for years with her Dad. Yep, she’s one of those rare females who can be totally feminine, then go out and field dress a deer. ;-)

Bless your heart, voter. Isn’t it just a bummer? First, serving under Slick and then the techie bust. Some of us just seem to be on the wrong side regardless of how hard we try. Like me (though it wasn’t by my choosing), when Marilyn Monroe was the epitome of womanhood, I looked like Twiggy. Then when Twiggy came along, I looked like Ma Kettle. Not that I’ve ever been overweight, it is just that when compared to Twiggy, I was large. Shoulda been – used to sit around eating banana splits hoping to gain some weight and didn’t even like banana splits! (That was long before all this cholesterol thingy came to the forefront! LOL)

I would appreciate any info you could relate, voter. And may I say – thank you for your service. The military has always held a special spot in my heart and always will.

There’s nothing like having family members in the military to put things in perspective. My dad was in the military when I was a baby; he was nearly sent to the Gulf War but his mission was changed at the last minute. I sometimes wonder how my life might have been different if he’d gone.

while in the military. It is designed to wash out those who are not really serious about being in the military and it’s way of life.

Army isn’t that bad of a branch to be in. Much of it though will be hurry up and wait.. over and over again. All she has to do is to keep focused and never ever be late for your work shift unless you are so sick that the doctor will write up a leave from work slip. Yep you actually have to go to the doctor while super sick and get a doctors note.

Anyway sounds like she’ll be in an ok field of work although it might entail her going TDY or being deployed for long periods of time. Just really depends on what all she will be assigned to do.

She should be set to go to Tech school next for formal book training if it’s a field that requires technical skills that anyone off the street won’t have. After that she’ll be assigned her perm base, or at least her first assigned location (Fort). At that point it will be like a regular job for awhile.

I hope that Rick Perry gets elected next year, and if so she’ll be much better off. Before I got out in ’98, I was talking to a bunch of my superiors who had hit their 20 year mark, which is the earliest you can retire at. All of them told me they were staying in past the election, so that their retirement paperwork, of which a certificate and letter were signed by the president, would not be signed by Clinton. They didn’t want the disgrace.

Tell your granddaughter good luck and hope she does well.

I am from Texas and throughout the crumbling of our economy in the US Texas has stayed strong. I feel Americans are worried as I am what is happening to the America that we know. RICK PERRY is a true conservative with job creation, military background and he really connects with people and he has a strong faith and sense of humor. I think America will be great again with RICK PERRY as our President!!!

Tebow is getting shredded again—how can he complete so few of his passes and still win? It’s unheard of! Kinda like debate performances, huh? How can a guy pull off a win when he’s such a cad at debating? How can an NFL quarterback take his team to 4 consecutive wins when the guy can barely complete a pass? This simply isn’t done in polite NFL circles and you can just see Elway’s chagrin up in the box; how DOES this kid do it? And, all this thanking his Savior on top of it? Why, its a disgrace!

Perseverance and faith take people to exceptional places in life. Standing firm even if you are standing alone is tough. BS, teleprompters and media slaves can only get you so far.

      RICK PERRY FOR PRESIDENT 2012.

Wake up, America. The future is calling YOU to act and help save the nation. Monday Morning Quarterbacks need not apply.

A very light-hearted diary but one that packs a mighty good punch. It’s nice to get a big smile early in the morning. Perry 2012!

  • cheetah2

We need to get every congress critter running for office in 2012 to sign a pledge to work to downsize Congress as Perry calls for in his reform plan. Elect people who understand and will fight for a true citizen congress. With the recent shenanigans going on over the budget it looks like Perry is on the right track with this. I think we need to elect him and let him have at it- see how much he can get done. But let’s elect some people to congress who will back him up!

And your process of elimination is very similar to mine in terms of vetting all of the candidates to settle on the best choice among them.

As a fairly new political junkie, I am watching the process of vetting all of the candidates evolve–both within myself as well as by reading the minds of other posters here at RS and other political blog sites.

One of the things that I see taking place is a true return to Constitutional governance as the only hope for our Republic to survive. And this is the main reason I see Rick Perry as the answer to America’s woes.

He is the only candidate that really preaches the Constitution as the foundation we must return to in order to restore the nation to greatness. No other candidate seems to recognize the importance of this–or maybe if they do, they don’t feel it is possible because they rarely mention such an approach.

The other thing about this that I find interesting (and a bit ironic) is that in the face of so much corruption in government, the temptation to glob onto an outsider such as Cain (or Donald Trump) is strong and one of the main reasons Cain has done as well as he has. However, as the vetting continues, it is becoming apparent that what we need is not an inexperienced outsider, but an experienced insider who understands politics and how to play the game to win. Somehow, Perry has managed to stay inside the game and hold onto conservative principles, In fact, when I listen to him, I think in some ways, he has gone through the same transformation so many of us have gone through especially in the last ten years in recognizing that the feds have become bullies and are beating up the states and the people.

Hopefully, enough conservatives will have the wisdom to come to the same conclusions regarding Perry as you and I have come to. I am convinced that if elected, he will come to Washington with a wrecking ball in hand.

    • deuke

coming to that same conclusion. I did support Herman Cain, but I have found, not unlike you westcoastpatriette, that he lacks in the very issues I think are so important. Gov. Perry, on the other hand has grabbed the bull by the horns and is tussling hard – that I respect immensely.

Maybe it’s time we go ahead and choose Gov. Perry and give him all we got! He certainly is giving it all he’s got!

      • westcoastpatriette

to “choose Gov. Perry and give him all we got.”

It’s my prayer that if he does, indeed, win the nomination, we will all rally behind him and win the White House–which will then be in need of a thorough cleansing from the defilement it is now undergoing.

  • http://www.nighttwister.com NightTwister

Good to see you again. I can’t really disagree with anything you said here. I just hopes he learns to sell it soon. Right now he couldn’t sell free food to an Ethiopian (h/t rstreu). He should be the clear anti-Romney choice, but somehow still isn’t.

  • cheetah2

He is positioning himself as the one true outsider in the campaign. He has never been part of the Washington establishment. Cain fails because he is a former lobbyist. Gingrich fails.

  • onenationundrgod

It is encouraging to read your diary today. I would have to agree with each of your points, and I think many could add additional differing points to yours. In conclusion to your arguments, IMO are that hopefully many voters will also go through these same steps to arrive at the same conclusion as you have.
In my mind there is no better candidate to lead our Great Nation back to something we recognize, a testament to our brave hero?s who fought and died for our freedom, our constitution, our hope for future generations. This election I believe is on the very edge of losing all of this, it?s all or nothing!
I believe our choice will determine the greatness or failure of America as we know it. This is not an emotional decision, a popularity contest, or mindless acceptation of what others say we need. This is our duty to evaluate each person for strengths and weaknesses, of integrity, and honor, for vision and determination.
As a Texan, I have had the privilege of voting for and living under the governorship of Governor Perry, I will lament losing him as our governor, but our Nation will be blessed to have him as our president.

  • nathanalbright

…and say I wish you would post more often as well. :)

  • Scope

I just saw this article with a link to Perry’s Thanksgiving message. Thank you Marcus Luttrell.

I just read in the comments there that the first person Marcus called when the thugs killed his therapy dog was Rick Perry. He sent the Texas Rangers to chase and run down the thugs. They should be thankful that Marcus didn’t take care of the problem himself. They should be very very thankful.

  • Scope

I hope all is going well for you, and that you are back to 100%. It’s so good to see you posting again.

Thank you so much for endorsing Gov. Perry. Coming from you Hooah, that’s a biggie.

  • redneck_hippie

If I agreed any more with you, we would be the same person. But then I would have to explain having gone through childbirth twice :)
From what I know of your background, Hooah, I was 100% sure who you would choose. I went from Daniels to Palin-slash-Perry-whichever-one-got -in, then to Perry when he declared.

Many of your same reasonings convinced me, although my process of elimination was different. I could have heartily supported many others who did not run, i.e., Pence, DeMint, etc etc etc.

The winnowing of adversity is making my choice more sure every day. If I need to define my 2nd choice at some future date, I will do so based upon the choices remaining and how they have handled the rigors of the campaign. The testing is intensifying, and will clarify further who is or is not equipped to lead our great nation in these horrendous and dangerous times. Very proud to be standing alongside you on the bridge, Hooah.

For any waverers, you may not have heard about the Perry family taking in a wounded warrior named Marcus Luttrell at one point in his recovery. And there are others as well. One of the things I very strongly consider when choosing a candidate is what they do when people aren’t looking. People of character are fine people when the mic is off and the cameras aren’t around.

  • theredrider

from Newt Gingrich, then I hope he stays in the race until June.

I pray every night that Newt is not our nominee. That guy just cannot be trusted.

  • Aaron Gardner

    Also, good choice. ;)

  • Hooah_Mac

Somehow I had not heard before today of the connection between Marcus Lutrell and Governor Perry, or how supportive Governor Perry has been of Texas Gold Star families. If I knew nothing else but those two things, he would have my complete support.

    http://youtu.be/aZCorLNHrwE

Maybe some of you won’t understand why that is a big deal – but just remember I’ve been there – and a CinC that gets it is the one luxury I think that the United States Military has a right to ask for.

  • Scope

the story about when Perry was deciding if he would get into the race or not, he got all of his family members together to help make that decision. The only non-family members at that meeting was Marcus and his wife. Marcus was very worried about the toll it would take on Anita Perry, and was almost going to go for no, but decided to go all in with him. They are very close.

Just a little tid bit of info, Rick and Marcus ride choppers together.

  • Hooah_Mac

Marcus Luttrell is the man I think of. There are very few men alive who deserve the title as much as he does. If I had known he was with Gov Perry, I wouldn’t have had to take so long to make my final decision.

Seriously, from my perspective, that means more than 200 politician endorsements – even an endorsement from Fred!! would pale in comparison.

  • 1bunny

and for choosing to support Rick Perry.

  • littlebrother

I like that Rick Perry is proposing things like completely ELIMINATING three departments. No one else is saying that. Also, starting from scratch for all foreign aid is so important now. I think that he’s going to do well in the primaries because he’s got SuperPacs helping him get tv time.
