Only One

Cross-posted at UnifiedPatriots.com

There are currently five major candidates running for President:  Newt Gingrich, Ron Paul, Rick Perry, Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum.  Who is in the lead or mostly likely to win has changed from time to time, and it may or may not change again.  However, of those five –

Only one candidate voluntarily joined the military and proudly wore the uniform.

Rick Perry flew C130’s around the world.  Ron Paul was drafted.  The other three never served at all, they were neither drafted for Vietnam nor volunteered to serve.  Newt was ineligible for draft.  Mitt Romney was busy as a missionary in Paris when he could otherwise have been drafted.  Rick Santorum is too young to have been drafted.

Service in uniform is essential in a Commander in Chief.  Only someone who has served can truly understand the mind of the Soldier.  Although being a pilot, a grunt, or a deckhand doesn’t give one meaningful strategic vision, it does give one a unique appreciation for what it means to be at the bottom of the military food chain, where the action happens.

Only one candidate has experience as commander of a large number of troops.

While it is possible Ron Paul had subordinates while a Captain in the Air Force and ARNG, as a medical officer, it is unlikely, albeit possible, that he was in “command”.  Rick Perry has been the Commander in Chief of the Texas National Guard, an experience invaluable for someone aspiring to be Commander in Chief of the nation’s armed forces.  This gives Governor Perry an organizational understanding of the military to complement his service perspective.

Only one candidate has a real plan to overhaul Washington – to tear down the status quo rather than tease around the edges.

Governor Perry intends to completely overhaul Washington D.C.  He has well defined plans to simplify the tax code, rein in Congress, reduce spending, fix entitlements, eliminate departments, and reduce the national debt.  Other candidates have plans to do some of these things, but only Governor Perry’s plan paints with bold colors.  The others want to “fix” Washington, improve it.  Rick Perry wants to fundamentally change the way business is done there.  I say it’s about time.

Only one candidate has over a decade of executive governing experience.

The only other Governor in the race is Mitt Romney, who served one term and did not seek reelection in the face of certain defeat.  We have seen what executive inexperience at the POTUS level means. It is time for a Governor who has successfully governed a state has proven that they can handle the executive requirements of the office.

Only one candidate repeatedly and sincerely declaring intent to fully secure border with Mexico.

Governor Perry has been labeled as soft on immigration, and the evidence shows that this is an unfair perception.  As Governor of Texas, he has made great strides in securing Texas’ border with Mexico and has fought against sanctuary cities within his state.  He is the only candidate continuously stating his intention to secure the border, promising that “the border will be secure within 1 year of his hand leaving that Bible.”  In a field generally weak on illegal immigration, Rick Perry will seal the border, the others will likely continue to talk about the “illegal immigration” problem.

Only one candidate is strong on all three legs of Reagan’s conservative stool, with the governing record to back the rhetoric.

Governor Perry is pro-life, pro-family, pro-2nd Amendment rights, pro-right to work, anti-tax, anti-spending, pro-military.  He will nominate only conservative judges to the courts.  He has signed 6 balanced budgets in his state without raising taxes. He signed tort reform in his state.

Only one candidate has a record of presiding over a government that created jobs, and continues to do so at a rate far outstripping the national average.

Texas created over 1 million jobs during Governor Perry’s time in office.  The rest of the country has a net loss of jobs over the same period.

Only one choice for me.

Many will tell you for one reason or another that you should not support Governor Perry.  I’ll lay it out simply.  If those that say Mitt Romney is inevitable are right, then you MUST vote for Rick Perry, because it will be a message to Romney and others what conservatives want.  If they are wrong, if Romney will eventually fall as the GOP electorate pays more attention( I believe this is possible if not likely, as long as there is an alternative in the race), then voting for Rick Perry keeps Governor Perry in long enough to get his message out.  Do not listen to those saying a vote for Rick Perry is a vote for Romney[or whoever], because this early in the game, strategic voting only makes sense if you want the talking heads to determine the outcome.  A vote for Rick Perry is a vote for Rick Perry, and all the things he stands for.  In the general, we vote for someone we may not like to beat the one we must.  In the primaries, we must vote for the one we most would like to see holding the office, otherwise, we abdicate our right to participate.

Governor Perry is the closest thing we may ever come to a conservative wish list candidate.  Although not perfect, he embodies the full spectrum of conservative ideals more than any of the others this cycle, and more than most in the past.

But he has a lot of work to do in not much time.

to disagree with here. This is informative, accurate and straight to the point.

There is no other choice for me and won’t be one either. I read everywhere of those who say that we MUST decide right now or we MUST tell come together right now for (blank) or that I MUST NOT stick with Perry because “he has a terrible accent” or “he is just George W, only dumber” or “he loves illegals” and so on. I take all of these suggestions to be nothing more than a scam to throw the election to the”inevitable” Romney. No, he is NOT inevitable. The man is not even likeable!

Whoever thinks they can sway, frighten, threaten or scam me is totally mistaken. It will not happen. Perry will be my vote all the way to 1600 and beyond! He can, and will, win!

but the most important eight reasons are My eight Soldiers still serving in the U.S. Army Reserve(One currently in Afghanistan) who deserve a Commander in Chief who has the experience and the knowledge to respect them, trust them, honor them, and use them wisely.

I know that everyone seems to have forgotten that we still have men and women, RIGHT NOW, in combat, but I have not forgotten. Nor will I forget the 6328 lost in Iraq and Afghanistan, at least 27 of whom I knew personally before their deaths or saw give the ultimate sacrifice It is clear that only Governor Perry has the backbone and the concern to recognize the sacrifices and demand that we do not render those sacrifices moot.

As I said in the days when I was in Iraq and under fire, many if not most of us feared death much less than we feared the failure of the civilian leadership to ensure our sacrifices were not in vain. John Q. Public may or may not get that, but Rick Perry does.

Notice which candidate has the support of many living MOH, Navy Cross and Silver Star recipients – that is no accident. Rick Perry is the man in the race that many veterans’ respect. That may not be enough to make him Presidential material, but it is necessary in my view, and none of the others have it.

sweet 20 year-old granddaughter who joined the Army last September and is currently training in VA. She will be deployed probably within 6-8 months, but we don’t know where just yet. She has wanted to join for ever so long, is a gung-ho soldier and a good conservative who is in the tank for Governor Perry. Believe me, the only man on that stage that I trust to keep her safe is my Governor – the only one on that debate stage who has the foggiest idea of what our military even DOES, and I know he loves and supports our troops every bit as much as me.

I will never, ever forget our fallen and damn on a regular basis those who do not care. During ‘Nam, I was a young woman who lived through those dark times when our troops came home and were spat upon – I won’t forget that, or the Hanoi Janes who are forever on my list of traitors to this beloved nation of ours, and there are many. A lot of them are the so-called leadership of this country! My God, how has it gotten this far?

Yes, Rick Perry is the only man on that stage who is viewed by me to be the only true, deep-down patriot of the lot of them. He IS America – the example of how this country was founded. Anyone who is not a patriot who loves our military and this beloved nation of ours. I will go down fighting with my last breath to defend all of them. Not a great deal I can do being a 71 year-old woman, but I do have a vote and a very loud voice.

Thank you so much for your service, Mac. I stand by you and your fellow patriots and cry for those who have sacrificed so much for all of us. Personally, I don’t know how any of you manage to do your jobs without the full support of every single person in this country, yet you do. My granddaughter is will continue to do so. May God watch and keep every last one of you safe in His arms!

P.S. I stand with Rick Perry regarding the Marines’ “utterly deplorable” actions. Our Dear Reader and his minions insult our military daily – I won’t forget that either, ever.

and I find it disheartening that he is being overlooked or negatively stereotyped. It reminds me of a job interview where they overlook the qualified candidate to hire some mediocre clock-watcher because someone on the interviewing staff knows a cousin who is married to the sister of guy who used to be best friends with the job seeker.

If Perry drops out & I suspect he will, my choices have just been cut down to one. I like much if what Paul says but disagree with him on his foreign affairs stances. Santorum is not a fiscal conservative, which is extremely important to getting the job market working, & Romney isn’t a choice. That leaves Newt. He definitely isn’t a tea party conservative but he is 100% better than Mittens. In my opinion, the establishment republicans have won again. For whatever reason, Iowa, N H, & now S.C. Tea Party Americans have not stood behind Perry, not the Tea Party or Sarah Palin.
For the Tea Party in SC to support Paul instead of Perry blew my mind. No doubt Perry must be scratching his head. Few Tea Party groups have come out in support of Perry. Makes me understand that even the people that call themselves Constitutional Fiscal Conservatives either are not or don’t understand what it means. Rush Limbaugh said from the very beginning
That if we got caught up in social issues instead of the economy & beating Obama we would loose. We have lost the minute that Perry leaves the race. You can?t blame him, his support is pathetic in S C, a state you would expect to care about the economy. Perry is a full package, economically sound and socially sound. Maybe it just isn?t his time and God has other plans for him. Now I am left with Newt and hope he can beat Romney cause I am not convinced Mittens can beat Obama. God bless our beautiful America.

If he were to drop out at some point, I will be supporting no one in the primary. Every other candidate has glaring weaknesses both as conservatives and as potential candidates in the general election.

I will vote for the R nominee in the general regardless, but if that nominee isn’t Rick Perry, I don’t see how we win.

      • capncrunch

I don’t cotton much to general election polls this far out and I’ve gotten to the point where I just start blowing raspberries at anyone who tries the Romney/electability argument on me, but Perry is in a hole with regards to public perception that he’d need some pretty savvy political skills to dig his way out of that I don’t think he possesses. He’s at an approve/disapprove of 21/63 nationwide (http://argojournal.blogspot.com/2012/01/poll-watch-ppp-d-2012-presidential.html), and while he’s not that much worse off than Gingrich, I at least know from this primary campagin that Gingrich can rise from the ashes on the strength of some marvelous debate performances. Perry has a habit of doing the opposite.

Face it, the man is a known quantity as a goofball and the MSM isn’t going to deviate from covering him like one – because Perry let them. I love the Gov and so does most every reasonable-thinking person I know, but America as a whole does not.

  • redneck_hippie

per his spokesman, Mark Miner. I believe he should stay in until the end. For all the reasons you state and especially your 8 reasons, I think Perry knows he has an obligation to stay in as the only outsider who will break down the status quo.

Only One, Hooah. Damn fine piece.

PS thank you to all the beautiful and amazing RS diarists who continue to carry the torch forward.

It’s only a funny happenstance that the diaries are on the right side of the page LOL!

candidate will have finished 5th in Iowa, 6th in New Hampshire, and 5th in South Carolina.

    Time to face reality, folks.

Board the Stop Romney Train. All-in for Newt!

    • Hooah_Mac

Well, there are so many ways, it is hard to focus too much. The reason that I decided to comment is this – neither you nor Erick has given me any reason to believe that Newt is better than Romney – either as a consistent conservative or in the electability realm. Either Newt or Romney gives us the same result – an almost impossible attempt at the general due to a severely flawed candidate, and should they win, a President with a proven track record of capitulation to the left. Newt’s current (and previous, I was there for Newt’s big talk in the 90′s) rhetoric is admirable but he will not follow through on it.

I’ve never liked Romney, but I’ve never been on the anybody but Romney train. I am for a candidate because he is the best one in the field. If he loses, that is bad for all of us – even the supporters of other candidates that think they win.

Hooah Mac shows us excellent reasons why Governor Perry was probably our best choice.

The polls show us highly dismaying reasons for his collapse: the spawn of TV, the short-attention span, unthinking society, saw Perry stutter and stumble in “debates,” heard morons give 90-second “analyses” as to why his verbal stumbles were “disasters” and therefore the “articulate” BIG BRObama would eat him alive in “debates” before November.

(Sorry for all the ironic quotation marks.)

Ancient Athens and Rome in the last days of the Republic showed us what happens when a population worries more about the glib charisma of their politicians, rather than the substance and consistency of their arguments AND of their character.

What happens is the rise of demagoguery and its cousin, election fraud – e.g. the repeal of Senate Bill 5 in Ohio, the Recall now in Wisconsin against Gov. Walker – which will lead to the deterioration of the state, as people vote for short-term desires.

Romney and Gingrich – glib and charismatic – are now in the lead. We can only hope that some Conservative substance still exists in their marrow, that their glib charisma will trump MAObama’s exaggerated gifts, and that if elected with a Republican Congress, government will actually be reigned in and actually reduced, along with its attendant increasingly confiscatory taxation.

As an Ohioan, who saw a Republican governor and a Republican state legislature increase government and taxes, I am not too hopeful.
