Sarah Palin’s Lump of Coale

One interesting and important fact not mentioned so far about Sarah Palin’s endorsement of Brian Murphy in the Maryland GOP gubernatorial primary: Top Palin advisor John Coale and his strong ties to Martin O’Malley and the Maryland Democratic Party.

Coale, is the husband of Fox New’s host Greta Van Susteren, a trial lawyer, who struck it rich on the 1997 settlement with Big Tobacco, and an extremely generous Democratic donor.

Coale loaned O’Malley’s campaign $500,000 in the waning days of the 2006 gubernatorial campaign.

Between federal and state accounts Coale has given the Maryland Democratic Party over $60,000.

Given Coale’s ties and contributions to the Maryland Democratic machine is it any surprise that out of the blue Sarah Palin endorses the primary opponent of Bob Ehrlich, the one man who can end the Democrats’ stranglehold over the state.

Greta Van Susteren was one of the few people in the media who was fair to Sarah Palin during her 2008 campaign, perhaps her husband likes Sarah because she does. In any event its excellent news that she’s showing strong cross-over appeal, gaining support from those who used to support Democrats bigtime. I don’t know anything about the MD Gov race, but I’m confident if she’s endorsing somebody that person is the best candidate to support. I”ve never even heard of the guy she’s endorsing, while I’ve heard of the other guy, and probably the other guy will win, and of course whoever wins will beat the Democrat in November. Certainly in Kansas Sarah’s endorsement wasn’t enough to take the more Conservative guy from like 30 points or so back to win, he still lost by 5. So assuming this guy’s 30 or more points back also, I don’t imagine her endorsement will change the outcome. Still, I’d suggest giving that Brian Murphy guy another look, it sounds like he’s the guy to support! Certainly if he does lose narrowly he will be well positioned for a future run, so that’ll be good.

Brian Murphy is not going to win the primary. I’d be surprised if Murphy gets more than 20% of the primary vote.

What Palin’s endorsement does for Murphy is to make people check him out and then go back to supporting Ehrlich.
