It’s 2016, and President Willard Mitt Romney …

I’m curious.

There’s a lot of people who are absolutely discombobulated at the thought of Mitt Romney winning the nomination (as it looks like he’s going to do). Some are distressed at the thought because they’re positively convinced that Romney simply cannot win against Obama, and others are even more distraught because they are convinced that he could actually win and end up being inaugurated as the 45th President of the United States.

Suffice it to say, both sides are convinced that Romney is a no-good scumbag who would be almost as bad and perhaps even worse than Obama – to the extent that we have more than one or two swearing that they would sooner vote a thousand times for Barack Obama than ever consider voting for Romney.

Cool.

But I’m curious … for those who are absolutely convinced that a Romney Presidency would be a thoroughgoing disaster, what exactly is it that you think he’ll do?

Do you believe he’ll introduce Gun Control?
Raise taxes?
Surrender the United States to the Taliban?
Force all states to legalize gay marriage?

    We’ll have a VAT.

Obamacare will be tweaked to be less egregious (but not less socialist).

We’ll get two more David Souter types on the Supreme Court.

    Taxes will go up.

Employment will improve, but not in well-paying segments.

The smaller, but more ideologically “pure” Dems in the Senate would successfully block all attempts at reform by picking off the Maine Triplets (Scott Brown, honorary member) and others.

In short, I don’t think a President Romney would look significantly different from a President George H. W. Bush, or a President Richard Nixon…. the best we can hope for is 2-4 years of gridlock.

Worse, I don’t see how a record of limited accomplishment and constant fighting with *both* parties in the congress leads to a re-election… getting us a Dem POTUS in 2016.

      based on Romney’s past performance.

He’s a chameleon, and in that way seems to me much more like Clinton than either Nixon or GHWB. Opportunistic, not overly burdened by principle.

The scariest part of your assessment is the David Souter part.

Obama in his first term has done none of those things you listed. Now, that might change in his second term: maybe he’ll collectivize the farms, give Uncle Sam sole ownership of the means of production, and trot out ye olde bugle and choir to belt out a few verses of “The Internationale”. Right about now, though, everyone and their mothers is looking at Romney, looking back at Obama’s absolutely horrific first term… and saying to themselves, “You know? I can see Romney doing or continuing a whole lot of this crap given his record and rhetoric, and the stuff that he would do differently is so mincing that it’s not worth splitting a p to talk about.”

The problem, of course, is that they are correct in at least some respects. No one worries that Romney will do any of those things on your list, but after Obama’s first term, it’s pretty clear that those things aren’t a huge priority for Obama, either. Romney and his supporters aren’t battling Obama when it comes to the conservative vote; they’re battling Jack Daniels and apathy. Hate to break it to you, but right now Jack Daniels is winning, because Romney hasn’t presented a compelling case for what he’ll do as President, outlined his core convictions and philosophy (if he has any), or made clear how he’s any different from Obama on issues that matter. Instead, he and his supporters have run around making convoluted, contradictory (“nuanced”, they claim) arguments for why it’s bad when Obama does something, but why it’s great when Romney does the same thing. Oh yeah, and Vote Romney, you dumb rubes. It’s not like you have a choice. This line of argumentation insults our intelligence and just reinforces the problems that us hicks in the sticks have with Romney — such that a bunch of us are going to say, “White Obama can win all the beauty contests and primaries he wants — without my help.”

Figure out how to make Romney attractive, substantive, and meaningful on the issues that matter to the base, and you won’t have this problem. Distract people, make convoluted arguments, insult them, or try to scare them into voting Republican with the Obama boogeyman, and they’ll just ignore you. They already know why they’re not voting Romney — and you calling them dumb or going off on tangents is not going to dissuade them.

Any real conservative knows that minimum wage laws just guarantee you’ll be unemployed if you’re not worth the minimum wage. In spite of his two Harvard degrees Romney hasn’t figured it out, because he’s a Liberal.
