MEMBER DIARY

Newt Gingrich for President

Because I want to win

It’s time. The silly season officially ends tomorrow as we begin to see rhetoric converted to votes. Although the Colorado caucus and primary are not for some time, I felt it was important to select a candidate. I recently wrote a diary with my evaluations of the candidates, so I see no reason to repeat that information here.

As many of you likely expected, I’m endorsing Newt Gingrich for President. I have to admit, I really liked Leon’s Still the Governors diary a couple of days ago. I started this election season supporting a Governor: Tim Pawlenty. I still believe he would’ve been our best candidate, and am sad we missed that opportunity.

Experience matters a lot to me, as I’ve stated around here from the beginning. This is why I immediately discounted the campaigns of Rick Santorum, Michelle Bachmann, and especially Herman Cain. I too wanted a governor, but now that I see what’s left, I just don’t think any of them is the best candidate we can run against Obama. I believe the candidate with the best chance to beat him is Newt Gingrich.

Newt is the one candidate that will be able to stand up to the media onslaught that will be coming. Like it or not, a Presidential candidate in the 21st Century has to be able to do that to succeed. He has a conservative record, including forcing a liberal President towards the center. That he has baggage, there is no doubt, but none that would hurt him in the general election like it has in the primary. He is not the most conservative candidate running, but for me is conservative enough.

I also believe Newt has the ability to shake things up in Washington like no other candidate could. A radical approach is needed, and has the experience to make radical change. He’s the one candidate that has been talking about solutions all along.

On Day One, we will immediately begin to change government so it starts serving the will of the American people.

He’s loyal to the Republican Party; sometimes to a fault. For me, it ultimately it comes down to who can beat Obama, and I really believe Newt is the only one that can. I know a lot of you won’t agree with that, and that’s fine. In the end I have to do what I believe is best for me and my family.

I encourage you to watch this interview. The site doesn’t support embedding, so you’ll have to click through to watch it. It’s almost 30 minutes long, but worth it.

I encourage you to vote for Newt Gingrich, just as I will when it’s my turn. But whatever happens, let’s commit now to work together to elect the eventual Republican candidate, whoever he may be.

Newt has a proven conservative record and he’s shown himself to be more than competent in the debates.

It’s time we get behind him to defeat Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum and Ron Paul!

He’ll have some staying power. It’s probably between him and Perry vs. Romney for nomination.

That’s when I made my final decision. The only other candidate I donated to this cycle was Pawlenty.

Logically, it has to be either acceptable or unacceptable for a president to commit serial adultery.

If it is unacceptable for a president to commit serial adultery, then Newt Gingrich is not qualified to be president.

However, if it is acceptable for a president to commit serial adultery, then most people will also find Newt Gingrich to be unworthy of being president. Newt Gingrich can be portrayed as leading the effort to impeach Bill Clinton, and Bill Clinton’s underlying offense was serial adultery. If Bill Clinton’s behavior was acceptable, then Newt Gingrich was wrong, and a hypocrite, to impeach him.

Newt Gingrich can only hope to win by going negative on Obama, and with Obama there are certainly plenty of negative actions to point out. However, Gingrich is tarnished enough himself, that Obama and the Dems can claim that Gingrich is just engaging in McCarthyist persecution of Obama, just like he did with Clinton. Candidate Gingrich will just motivate both the moderate Clinton-wing and the leftist Obama-wing of the Democratic party to unite to crush Republicans. Gingrich will not attract independent voters.

Gingrich will be even worse if Obama chooses not to seek re-election and he ends up facing Mrs. Clinton at the top of the Democrat ticket. The impression then will be that Gingrich first hypocritically persecuted the guilty spouse, for behavior he was engaging in himself, and now he is persecuting the innocent spouse by running against her.

Full disclosure: Bill Clinton persuaded me to be Republican more than any other person, because of his disgraceful behavior in the White House. I would support Gingrich in the general election because Obama’s 20-year attendance at a hate-America church is even less presidential than anything Gingrich has done.

And it’s not going to be an issue with a lot of conservative voters that realize it was a long time ago and he has been genuinely contrite about it.

Newt is the one candidate that will be able to stay positive and still remain an effective candidate. He’s shown he can pass conservative legislation while working with Democrats. That will play extremely well with independents that are tired of government gridlock.

Gingrich wouldn’t even have been considered in the primary if this was a fatal issue. It will be less of an issue in the general. When obama lit america on fire, people prioritize economic survival a bit higher.

I would support Gingrich in the general election because Obama?s 20-year attendance at a hate-America church is even less presidential than anything Gingrich has done.

Good grief. Obama destroys the economy with regulation and an unfettered desire to throw money into any fire that he can find that is stoked by his supporters, we’ve got unemployment numbers dropping only because huge numbers of people are leaving the workforce, our foreign policy is a mess and the best you can do is where Obama went to church?

That is, “Voters are impure”, or “There’s as many reasons to pick a candidate as there are supporters”.

I agree, it’s a stupid reason, but … I’ll take stupid over evil.

Some voters are not strongly ideological. If a voter is determined to vote for a good family man, he won’t vote for Gingrich, but he might well vote for Perry, Santorum, Huntsman, or Romney.

Why drive away voters who value personal morality highly, when we’ve got candidates with good personal morality and good policies?

Gingrich is not more conservative than Perry and Santorum, and he is not clearly more conservative than Huntsman or Romney. None of them sat next to Nancy Pelosi on a couch to tell us about global warming.

BTW, for me, Rev Wright, Bill Ayers, Solyndra, Fast&Furious, and activist judges are ALL good reasons to vote against Obama

          • acat

            Stop digging.

Gingrich has better balanced conservative credentials than Bachman, Romney, or Santorum, as well as a better leadership track record. (Yes, Romney was a Governor, but .. of Massachusetts…)

If you really have a problem with Newt’s personal life, don’t vote for him in the primary… and bite your tongue if he’s the nominee.

Gingrich’s RECORD is 1,000% more conservative than Santorum, Huntsman or Romney. Obviously denial is not just a river in Egypt.

The issue is what have the candidates accomplished and we’ve got only two who actually accomplished conservative objectives and that would be Perry and Gingrich. Santorum is a pro-life statist and Romney simply wants to use government as a business model to serve more people at a lower cost, and there is no difference between that and expanding government.

Perry would be the strongest of the group because of his executive experience – far better than Romney – and his conservative record, better than any of the lot. Santorum’s record is the worst of this group by far Huntsman and Romney have no core. Gingrich is #2 behind Perry.

I know in your mind you probably feel that Gingrich’s personal life is more important than having a job and a dollar that can actually purchase something, but I’m guessing the country will care more about the fact that he spearheaded the last balanced budget this country ever sniffed.

…and welfare reform…and tax reforms that preceded unprecedented economic growth in the late 90s.

Gingrich can “only hope to beat Obama” by running on his political record and reminding the country of Obama’s every chance he gets…sure seems like a winning strategy to me.

It’s been that way since the early 80s when he was trying to create “pro-active conservatism” (which was basically big government conservatism) as a replacement to “Goldwater conservatism” that according to him is too strict and unfashionable. According to Newt, people want the government and politicians to do stuff and to solve the society problems, so the politicians’ duty is to come up with solutions. He’s been that way for more than 30 years and he isn’t going to change now. He has solutions for everything. Personally, I prefer politicians who reckon it’s not their job to provide solutions and that some stuff simply can’t be improved.

Newt would be Bush and Obama on steroids as a president. We’d get a “big initiative” every month.

    • http://www.nighttwister.com NightTwister

nor is it his record. Newt’s record is tax cuts, balanced budgets, and welfare reform.

Thomas Sowell is certainly greatly admired by conservative Republicans.

I would be more impressed if at least one Congressman who worked under Newt’s leadership in the 1990s were among those who have endorsed him.. The only one I know of who has taken a position, Tom Coburn, has warned us against Newt.

Apart from the sleaziness of his personal life, what also inclines me against Newt is the sleaziness of his political life. Freddie Mac, Nancy Pelosi, Dede Scozzafava, etc. There is too much Liberal Newt to warrant my confidence.

I certainly will support Newt if he is the nominee, but I like Rick Perry much better.

      There’s one.

Lets face it, the reason that we saw the recent surge in Newt Gengrich’s support in the polls was because people of America have seen what he can do on the debate forum and in the news media, he is an excellent communicator, historian, and has great ideas. America knew then and needs to be reminded that Newt is the one that can give Obama a run for the Whitehouse.

I think all Newt needs to… do to solidify his lead is have an honest and open chat with America and REAFFIRM that he is the one to take it to Obama. If he said the following words adding in some of his own brilliance that makes Newt, Newt he should be able to do it.

“There have been has been an onslaught of attacks against myself and my conservatism in the media over the past few weeks. I am standing here to talk with America directly. We want someone in this race who can clearly articulate conservative ideology with Mr. Obama next year, someone who has the guts, ability, and charisma to stand up for our ideas and beliefs. I don?t believe but I know that I am the one who can take the thoughts and emotions that each of you feel so passionately about on a daily basis and make Mr. Obama and the country understand that conservative ideals and fiscal policy is the ONLY way that we can continue to keep America at the forefront of the world?s economy. I vow to each and every one of you that I will use all of my knowledge and abilities to fight for you on a daily basis, both in the general election and as President of the United States of America. I did it back in the 90′s as speaker and I will do it again today”
