Romney should use his VP pick to help him with women voters.

Right now, Romney looks weak in attracting women voters.

The top 3 most admired women in America – Oprah Winfrey, Hillary Clinton, Michelle Obama – all back Obama for re-election.

If something big were to happen with one of those three then maybe Obama might lose his hold on the women’s vote. If say, Romney went on TV with Oprah and convinced her and her viewers to vote Romney, if Hillary Clinton ran against Obama for the 2012 Democrat nomination, if Michelle Obama filed for divorce – that kind of thing, then maybe Obama would be vulnerable.

Right now, Obama has the women’s vote all but sewn up so Romney needs to do something big to recruit women to his ticket.

Picking Condoleezza Rice to run on the Republican ticket would be Romney’s best move to attract women voters and boost his ticket’s foreign policy experience at the same time.

But Romney needs more women voters’ support. Oprah is the most admired woman with republican women so when she endorsed Obama for re-election that hurt the GOP ticket with women voters.

COMMENTS

  • Ned Reck

I do not think that Mr. Romney should cater to ANY specific special-interest group.

Mr. Romney should focus on picking a VP that appeals to any individual who believes in small government, low taxes, strong economy, low gas prices and JOBS. Women make up a large portion of voters and If appealing to women voters means so much, why is Hillary not POTUS?

The primary issue for women is not contraception… but the economy is an extremely strong issue. Women may not necessarily be the “bread-winners”… but in most instances, they buy the bread.

    Just my humble opine…

    Ned

    • reddestred

No Republican should cater to a specific special-interest group.

He should pick the best person for the job, not a woman, not a black, not an immigrant, not a hispanic, not a union member, not a minority.

  • http://nextgenerationvoters.com Bethany

If a woman is the best choice overall, then choose her. If it’s a man, then choose him. Don’t choose someone thinking it will win over an entire voting bloc– I don’t think that’s possible.
If he was to pick a woman, I think his best option would be Cathy McMorris Rodgers. She’s the highest ranking Republican woman in the House, and she’s doing a lot of things that most people won’t take notice of. She’s doing incredible work in the House; in my opinion, she’s the best female choice out there. Condi has too many ties to the Bush administration and her social stances won’t inspire the base– we need someone who can, since Romney isn’t exactly charismatic most of the time.

  • http://groups.yahoo.com/group/rice-for-president/ Peter_Dow

Condi was the top pick by republican voters – she beat out a lot of famous names, maybe some with what you think of as a “clear pro-lifer”.

Condi is more popular with the base than the others you want to pick.

It’s just a polling fact. People know Condi. They favor her.

Condi is also already favored way more than the ones you want to pick.

OK if you want to pick someone with exactly your view on abortion. Fine, You just tell Romeny to pick someone the base don’t like so much.

Pick someone who rubs the republican base women up the wrong way. Someone who makes Oprah Winfrey and other professional women want to vote for Obama.

It’s Romney’s ticket. It’s his pick. Obama will be pleased you are giving Romney bad advice to lose the election with.

    • lineholder

I’m a female, and it sounds to me like you’re spouting a bunch of nonsense. You really think pandering to Oprah Winfrey and her feminist colleagues will garner Romney favor with female Republic voters?

You haven’t been paying much attention to the “war on women” rhetoric coming from the left, have you?

Romney’s best chance of increasing his favorability with female Republic voters is to show how his policies will be better for our economy, and therefore, better for our children’s futures.

Females may admire Condi Rice in some ways. Want her as second in the chain of command, now, when so much is at stake? NO.

Sorry, Mr. Dow. Romney would lose more females than he would gain by making that choice.

    • mikeymike143

and anyone else who is reading this diary sees how everyone at redstate except you is basically laughing about condi being considered a legitimate VP choice.

and if you dont like your diary being made fun of, you might want to post on daily KOS or huff po next time.

  • Melody Warbington (rwm52)

of the many women in my family and a good number of my women friends, if Romney picks Condi, we’ll be casting an anti-Obama vote rather than a pro-Romney vote. Condi does nothing to energize the ticket. She is most definitely pro choice, or rather “mildly pro choice” which I find about as offensive as an active pro abortion position. It sounds as if she just can’t be bothered to take a stand, lukewarm if you will. Just abort a little bit of the baby.

As for the poll of women, Palin is the only one I respect. None for Laura Bush after she came out pro choice, and the others never had any in the first place.

    • westcoastpatriette

not only is she a squish re: abortion, but we do not need to go backwards and be reminded of the Bush era. She will forever be associated with the Bush administration and that in itself is a big “ick” factor for many. Why poison the stew when we have so many new, dynamic people to consider?

      • Melody Warbington (rwm52)

give me Nikki Haley or Susana Martinez. Both social and fiscal conservatives. Sure experience counts, but from where I sit, it’s the young guns who’ve been elected in more recent years who are sticking to conservative principles.

    • Melody Warbington (rwm52)

and I’d take Cheney & Rumsfield a hundred times over Rice.

I could care less what the gender of the VP pick is, but conservative principles and positions matter, and I find Condi lacking.

We shouldn’t be relying on celebrities. Now, if we’re talking about the veep, there’re two candidates- Rice and Gov. Fallin. Rice is too moderate. Fallin would turn some social conservatives off, and provide lots of dirt.

  • http://groups.yahoo.com/group/rice-for-president/ Peter_Dow

The VP pick is a move to the center to attract independents and support from the other party, so moderate is ideal.

Any VP pick which panders to the base and alienates independents and those in the other party is a bad pick, like Palin was a bad pick. Palin was a bad pick for another reason.

Palin was defined in American voters mind by the 2008 campaign. Most voters didn’t know her before then.

That I suspect is the gamble if Romney picks a relatively unknown woman for his VP, that the 2012 which defines her could go wrong.

Whereas with a VP Condi pick, no problem. Condi is well defined aleady with 66% of US voters already favouring her. Her moderation is exactly what is needed to appeal in a general election.

Then there’s what Condi brings to the ticket in terms of foreign policy experience.

So a VP Condi pick is win, win, win.

  • otis1

I doubt Condi would turnout like Powell,or the too many others the too sweet BUSH’S trusted. But when you have a guy like Mitt, who like the BUSH’S was tough on our Foreign Enemies post 911, and ,W was a great CINC for my troop, but was blind and too respectful to our domestic internal enemies in DC.

Romney who got where he is only with the help of elites like KRAUTHAMMER/ROVE/HUME, and the MSM who wants him as their next McCain, needs a tough more Conervative VP than himself, male or female.

This is not going to be a close race, unless we bow again to the MSM and rinos in DC who could care less about our children???

  • Darin_H

You’ve never addressed the fact that Condi is pro-choice and thus will not be acceptable to the base. We’re going to need an energized base and win over independents to beat Obama.

  • http://groups.yahoo.com/group/rice-for-president/ Peter_Dow

Let me see if I can embed a video wherein Condi answers Katie Couric about this question. It’s on YouTube but I will summarize incase it doesn’t embed properly here.

In the video Condi says that abortion is a tough moral issue, she believes in parental notification, she’s against late term abortion, she’s not wanted to see the law changed because it is an area she worries about the government being involved in, she says abortion is a terrible thing, hard on the women, not done lightly, and she hopes there will be fewer and fewer abortions.

Now we know Condi is more than “acceptable” to the republican base already.

Condi Rice for VP was a top pick by the republican base because she topped an April poll of republicans asked about possible republican VP picks which included Rick Santorum, Chris Christie, Marco Rubio, Paul Ryan, Bobby Jindal. and others. Condi energized the base in that poll more than all the other choices.

So the strange notion that Condi somehow isn’t acceptable to the republican base, can’t energize the republican base isn’t supported by the polling.

Your point about winning over independents I will answer in another reply.

  • http://groups.yahoo.com/group/rice-for-president/ Peter_Dow

In polls of all Americans, when they are asked about Republican Party names, Condoleezza Rice often comes out as the top choice for president or VP.

Recent polls show Condoleezza Rice is favored by 66% of Americans. That’s more favored than Obama (54%) and way more than Romney (40%).

  • acat

Unlike Obama, she didn’t grow up in a choom-scented cloister.

    Mew

  • Darin_H

    1. Pro-choice. You need to address this part. You skip over it. It’s a deal breaker for a lot of conservatives.

    2. To address your point – John McCain polled better than Obama with independents before the election season 4 years ago. Obama easily won independents on election day. Polling well with them now offers no insight into how the vote will go once they’re being knocked during an election.

  • http://www.hakubi.us/ Neil Stevens

Mitt Romney can’t afford to pick someone who isn’t a clear pro-lifer.

  • http://groups.yahoo.com/group/rice-for-president/ Peter_Dow

From a target of KKK hate-

    to world leader -

I don’t know about you but I’m energised! lol

  • http://groups.yahoo.com/group/rice-for-president/ Peter_Dow

Thanks for explaining who “Cathy McMorris Rodgers” is. But the fact that you felt you needed to, because she is relatively unknown, means it’s not a good pick, or at least not a safe pick.

By a safe VP pick I mean someone who will play in the election in a very predictable way because Americans know the person well already.

So if Americans don’t really know Rodgers yet, she isn’t a safe pick. She will be defined by the 2012 campaign in the minds of most voters.

That’s how it was with Sarah Palin 2008 and despite McCain’s confidence that she would play well in the campaign, she sucked, bombed with independents and was ripped to shreds by media interviews in which she came across as … well I will stop right there because there’s no need to add to what Sarah Palin suffered, bless her brave heart.

Now, an unknown, non-safe pick could play brilliantly but you don’t know in advance so it is a risk. It’s a “Hail Mary pass”.

Whereas with a Condi pick you know how she will play because she is already the 4th most admired woman by Americans. Condi will play very well. Guaranteed.

Incidentally, I actually agree with you – if a particular man pick for VP plays better with women voters then do pick him. But I am fairly certain that Condi will play better than any man and indeed any other woman,

The problems is if you look at the top 3 most admired women by Americans, they all back Obama for president – Hillary Clinton, Oprah Winfrey and Michelle Obama.

The fact that Winfrey is the most admired woman by republican women, the base women, is really what hurts any republican ticket. The GOP is weak with women and needs to play to its best card to win back women’s support.

    I can’t guarantee Romney-Rice will win in 2012. No-one can guarantee that.

If Obama responds to Romney-Rice by picking Hillary as his VP and runs as Obama-Clinton instead of Obama-Biden all bets are off because “that woman” (to paraphrase Bill) is a political giant among women.

All the GOP can do is its best and that’s Condi on the ticket for VP.

  • tnfriendofcoal101368

It’s that simple…he is not going to give back all the hard work Justice Roberts did uniting conservatives…

  • http://groups.yahoo.com/group/rice-for-president/ Peter_Dow

Well the republican base’d (conservatives, right\/) most admired woman is Oprah Winfrey who is backing Obama’s re-election,

Certainly most republican women admire Oprah Winfrey most. Maybe m,ost republican men too. I admire Condi most so no problem if Oprah’s not your most admired woman.

Now excuse my ignorance but I don’t know if Justice Roberts favors changing the law in a way Condi and Oprah don’t?

If Roberts favors the law as is, if he thinks the law as is is “clear pro-lifer” which conservative have united around, we are all for the status quot then Justice Roberts is united with Condi and we are all agreed that Condi is a clear pro-lifer so she’s everyone’s gal for VP.

Or what because your comment is not too clear buddy?

  • tnfriendofcoal101368

just like he’s not picking Rick Santorum, Bob Dole, The Easter Bunny and Santa Claus. I am not sure where Oprah Winfrey came from, but I am pretty sure The Easter Bunny has a better shot?

As for my statement, perhaps you have been in a cave the last week but Justice Roberts gave this decision on Obama Care that pretty much let conservatives know they had to unite behind Romney because the court would not save them.. Romney is not going to give that back by having Social Conservatives puke over Condeleeza Rice.

  • gekster

    from:

    excerpt:
On abortion, Rice is ?mildly pro-choice.? While she opposes late-term abortions and Medicaid payments for abortion and wants parental notification and consent where a minor is involved, Rice supports the basic libertarian idea that it is up to a woman to decide whether to have an abortion, and she is against getting the government involved.

  • http://www.hakubi.us/ Neil Stevens

His comment was clear to anyone who isn’t a candibot.

  • mikeymike143

come on now, donald duck has a better chance of being selected VP than a moderate from the bush administration does.

  • http://groups.yahoo.com/group/rice-for-president/ Peter_Dow

Condi is favored by 66% I am pretty sure that most of the 34% who don’t favor her are not puking over her for social conservative reasons.

Some of those 34% maybe didn’t like Bush foreign policy. Some of those 34% are democrat base or further left. Maybe they are puking over Condi because they hated the Iraq war but agree with the law as it relates to abortion?

Maybe a few of those 34% are indeed “social conservatives Condi pukers”. Maybe there is no such group but for the sake of argument let’s assume there is such a small group.

The point is, your “Condi pukers social conservatives” are a pretty tiny bunch of people and can’t beat Obama, right?

The Condi pukers could not unite around a preferred candidate to beat Condi in a poll of republicans for best VP pick.

Romney won’t run as a Condi-puker – he has already invited her to his Utah donors meeting where Condi brought the house down – but if he changed his mind and did start puking over Condi then Romney would be saying “goodbye” to 66% of the vote and “hello” to President Obama 2013 – 2017

I say forget “Condi pukers social conservatives” if such a group even exists. They have no-where to go and no-body to vote for in the general election. Their only chance was to get one of them nominated for the GOP and they failed.

Those 66% who favor Condi are the ones who can win the general election for Romney.

  • tnfriendofcoal101368

VP choices never “win” the election but they sure as heck can lose it. Those 66% who supported Romney-Rice will also support Romney-Portman, Romney-Ryan, Romney-Rubio, Romney-Claus…but the evangelicals who would puke at having a pro-choice Condeleeza Rice would change the election completely. Like Neil said, you’re a candi-bot so I am arguing with a brick wall. Doesn’t matter anyway, Romney-Rice ain’t happening. Well I guess Condi’s views on abortion could “evolve” but I kind of doubt she is willing or Romney would go there.

  • http://groups.yahoo.com/group/rice-for-president/ Peter_Dow

Listen to Condi speaking for herself on abortion in that video.

I was just asking what you guys all meant by “clear pro-lifer” because Neil seemed to be saying Condi wasn’t that and I wondered where tnfriendofcoal101368 thought that Justice Roberts came into the definition of “clear pro-lifer” the law and everything.

But it turns out that Justice Roberts was talking about Obama health care not abortion law so it was nothing to do with “clear pro-lifer” anyway.

So never mind I guess. Condi stands where she stands on abortion and maybe Justice Roberts is with Condi on keeping the law as is so tnfriendofcoal101368 point about Justice Roberts had nothing solid to say as regards “clear pro-lifer” to back up Neil Stevens.

  • gekster

Romney needs a clear Pro-Lifer to keep the base with him, and to dispell his pro-choice stigma.

  • tnfriendofcoal101368

Romney just got a huge gift from Justice Roberts’ decision in that conservatives now know they either unite behind Romney or watch Obama shove his socialist agenda down their throat. This has been a weak spot for Romney and the Roberts decision bolstered it.

Romney isn’t going to risk that conservative coalition being broke apart by evangelicals puking over Condeleeza Rice’s position on abortion. That is how it supports Neal’s comment. (and by the way to an evangelical “government shouldn’t be in the decision = government supports mass murder”) so she will need to shore that answer up considerably for them..

  • checkmate2012

    .

  • http://groups.yahoo.com/group/rice-for-president/ Peter_Dow

A moderate from a twice-elected presidential administration who is 66% favored by US voters. Sounds exactly what you want for a VP pick.

Are you sure you weren’t thinking about Donald Rumsfeld?

  • http://groups.yahoo.com/group/rice-for-president/ Peter_Dow

Condi topped a poll of republican base voters asked who they liked for VP.

So the republican base is with Condi already. It’s just a polling fact you need to face up to and live with.

The base’s most admired woman is Oprah Winfrey and she has endorsed Obama and that endorsement counts with republican women – Obama’s pro-choice views are no stigma to Oprah’s fans. They’ll listen to her views. The Republican ticket needs a voice that appeals to Oprah and her fans too.

Americans too are with Condi 66% favor her – polling fact.

Now, by all means if you want a “clear pro-lifer” who Oprah and the republican base run from – then you tell Romney to pick a loser and get President Obama. But be prepared to be disappointed when Romney doesn’t heed your bad advice.

  • http://www.hakubi.us/ Neil Stevens

If liking Condi means hating Rumsfeld, then I actively oppose her.

Candibot. or is it Condibot? Either way it’s stupid.

  • otis1

If Obama remains, this is not going to be a one State race like some think, this is going to be a rout like in 2010 or bigger. And if he does remain, at the bequest of Ayers/Soros,Biden will be told to be replaced by VP Hillary Clinton.

I think Obama is already so far behind in the real internal polls, that he has already been told by Ayers/Soros to step aside for HILLLARY, aka LAUTENBERG 2012.The MSM has already convinced enough Americans for years, that the Clinton’s/Senior Bush did not squander what Reagan left behind, and that BILL CLINTON was great for America, when he actually did nothing.

For these reasons,I think Mitt Romney should take on either Rubio or Bachmann as his VP,both more Conservative than him,and able to defeat Hillary in the few debates the DEMS want in 2012. If they have to face Biden?

Look for Obama and or Biden to be told to bow out in 2012,claiming medical etc..I don’t think Obama’s yearly potus medical exams have yet to be released, much like his college records/essays???

    excerpt:

Rice, who played a high-profile role in the George W. Bush administration as secretary and national security adviser, led the way with 26 percent, followed by Santorum with 21 percent. Rice has repeatedly shut down speculation about her interest in the job. Santorum, meanwhile, has suggested he’d consider the position if offered but has yet to even endorse his former GOP rival.

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, both of whom have seen their names repeatedly surface in conversations about Romney’s possible running mate, tied for third on the list with 14 percent each.

So rice has 26%. That looks like 40% away from your poll, and the poll I cite is from a survey of Republicans.

And here is a key sentence. “Rice has repeatedly shut down speculation about her interest in the job”.
So give it up and quit wasteing bandwidth.

is a voice for conservative women. Get a clue or go away. Oprah is a lefty and no longer supports Obama b/c like most, Team Michelle and Garrett disowned her when she and her big bucks threatened their domain.

If your whole stupid diary of 66% approve of Condi is based on the Romney fund raiser in Utah or wherever, that would probably be 1,000 folks or less. Yes she gave a rousing speech but that doesn’t qualify her to be VP. Go back to DKos…really. They’d support all 3 of your power women, for good reason. You’ll have more fun there I’m sure.

“Clinton Most Admired Woman for Record 16th Time

Hillary Clinton has now topped the list of Most Admired women a total of 16 times since 1993, finishing second in 1995 and 1996 to Mother Teresa and in 2001 to Laura Bush.

No other woman has been named Most Admired Woman as many times as Clinton. Eleanor Roosevelt is second with 13 No.1 finishes, followed by Margaret Thatcher, Jacqueline Kennedy, and Mother Teresa.”

This year Hillary Clinton got 17% support, Oprah Winfrey got 7%, Michelle Obama got 5%, then Sarah Palin with 4% and Condoleezza Rice with 3%.

So a ticket with Hillary on it is a ticket to be feared.

Those are the women Americans admire. Their endorsement matters. The Republican ticket ought to be courting those admired women and other admired women, and seeking their endorsements. What better way to do that than to put a very popular woman, Condoleezza Rice, on the ticket?

Or if you have a more popular man, favored by more than Condi’s 66% then pick him..

You are crossing into fanatical stupidity here.

I am answering your points one at a time good buddy.

Here’s the poll which shows 66% of Americans have a favorable opinon of Condoleezza Rice. It is a different poll from the one you quote which showed Condi topping a poll of possible VP picks.

    Rasmussen Reports
Condi for Veep? 66% View Former Secretary of State Favorably

    Friday, April 27, 2012

Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has said publicly she’s not interested in being Mitt Romne’s running mate, but a lot of her fellow Republicans like her just the same.

With speculation running wild over who Romney will choose to run with him for the vice presidency, Rasmussen Reports is testing the waters for a number of prominent Republicans around the country. The latest national telephone survey finds that 66% of Likely U.S. Voters share at least a somewhat favorable opinion of Rice, with 32% who view her Very Favorably. Just 24% have a somewhat or Very Unfavorable view of her.

The survey of 1,000 Likely Voters was conducted on April 24-25, 2012 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence.

The Presidential ticket is not a spot for total novices.

Gone full stupid now, havn’t we.

She did nothing to fix the mess at the state department during her tenure.

She has been fundamentally wrong about so much in the ME—if you want to hear more accolades about the Arab spring, she is definitely your gal.

She is pro-choice and not known for anything in terms of domestic policy (which means that she is AT BEST anothe GWH Bush).

The country is in the toilet. Romney is bad enough. Romney-Rice is enough to break the heart of the country. Please, can we do something to inspire some confidence in real change?

We need real change—not just a change in some personnel.

I like Rice as a person, and she has an impressive personal story. However, she is terrible on policy.

She’d crawl across desert with no water and then swim a snake pit to get the job if Romney would pick her…they all would.

?Rice has repeatedly shut down speculation about her interest in the job?. means “Romney hasn’t asked me for vetting information”.

Sure. Condi has said she is not interested in running for VP and said why.

Neither was Eisenhower interested in running for president. He probably said why too. He was a general, not a politician. Like Condi is a foreign policy expert and not a politician.

Joe Biden said “it’s not me” just before he got Obama’s pick.

Condi doesn’t arrogantly say what she what she will do if offered a hypothetical promotion. She says the minute your hypothetical assumption doesn’t come true then you are in trouble.

I think it is all about diplomacy and about being modest and waiting until you are really asked before saying if you are interested and will accept the position.

But sure, this all depends on Condi changing her mind,if asked, IF ASKED.

If she is not asked then never mind.

You’ll have to bring your own beer, though.
    A six pack should do.
I don’t see your promotion going over very well here.

That 66% figure is a figure for Rice alone. I quoted the poll already. American voters were asked if they had a favourable opinion of Condoleezza Rice? There was no mention of running for VP in that poll.

In another poll around about the same time, Obama was viewed favorably by 54%, Romney by 40%.

So you are way wrong if you think Romney-Portman, Romney-Ryan will automatically do as well. How well they do with depend on how well they are favored by Americans.

Condi favored by 66% lifts the ticket up from Romney’s 40%. which loses to Obama’s 40%.

Maybe Condi on Romney’s ticket lifts the ticket favorability above Obama’s 54%.?

Certainly no-one with less than 66% favorability can lift Romney’s ticket as high as Condi can lift it.

  • gekster

An intelligent person would get the message.
    Oh well.

Condi record in high office is well known. She has been National Security advisor. She has been Secretary of State. She has worked with president and vice presidents. She knows the VP job better than anyone.

She hasn’t run for elected office as a candidate before but she knows the drill.

Condi has experience of Bush election campaigns and has made speeches more than most of us. She even supported Bush making a speech at the 2000 Republican convention and she was well received. She made a well received speech at Romney’s donors meeting recently.

She has given speeches in all parts of the world. She has given speeches in all parts of America on her lecture tour after leaving office – and been very well paid for her speeches.

Condi has all the skills to run a great campaign and she starts off favored by 66%.

Condi can run for office no problem and she can win a campaign no problem.

A pro-abort who’s never run for office. That’s basically asking for Obama to win 300EVs again.
