Rick Perry in the Arena

When Governor Rick Perry tossed his hat into the Presidential ring, he said he was joining the race at his wife, Anita Perry’s urging. Perry believed it was his duty to run and was answering the question President Kennedy had asked Americans 50 years prior in his inaugural address: “ask what you can do for your country.”

Was Perry ready to run for President? No. His stumbles on the campaign reflect that reality. Is he ready to be President? Yes. His impressive record of conservative governance and Texas’ dominating economic growth attest to his strong leadership. There is an important distinction between these two questions. When President Reagan ran for President in 1980, he took on the Republican establishment and the country-club wing of the party. And he won. Yet Reagan benefited from already having run for President in 1976.

There is a steep learning curve to running for President of the United States. Gov. Perry’s success in winning the nomination will in large part reflect how fast he adjusts to this curve. He is not a particularly skillful debater, but he is improving rapidly. Perry, like every candidate, has his critics and baggage (yes I know about gardasil and in state tuition for illegals), but unlike the other candidates, Perry possesses vast executive experience (sorry Ron, Michelle and Santorum), a consistently conservative record (sorry Mitt, Newt and Huntsman) and a genuinely enthusiastic persona and endearing and inspiring charisma.

Perry’s military experience is an important asset also. How refreshing it would be to have a commander-in-chief who has actually led American servicemen, understands military culture, knows the difference between Veteran’s day and Memorial Day and how to correctly pronounce the Marine “corps.” Perry ‘s experience leading airmen during the Cold War and commanding 20,000 troops as Commander-in-Chief of the Texas National Guard for the past decade will serve him well as President. Further, Perry has developed a good grasp of foreign policy.

Allow me to review Perry’s more serious GOP opponents by first examining the Hermanator. I like Herman Cain, but he is just not ready to be President. Just ask him about Libya, China’s nuclear capability or perhaps any other country for that matter. Having a political record can be a deal-killer, but in Cain’s case, the absence of policy experience is soul-crushing his candidacy. Cain has shown poor judgment by who he’s surrounded himself with on his senior staff. Mark Block anyone? This repeat DUI offender is managing (or mismanaging to be more accurate) his campaign by releasing the bizarre smoking ad, blaming the Perry campaign, then the DNC for the sexual harrassment leaks to the Politico all without providing a shred of evidence. Worst of all, illegally launching Cain’s campaign as a 501(c)(3). This egregious mistake raises an integrity flag (and stupidity flag quite frankly) for Cain and will permanently derail the Cain train provided it ever gets back on the track.

I like Newt also. He’s brilliant and can articulate conservatism probably better than anyone. But Newtapotamus has not walked the walk and been a consistent conservative. He was for the individual mandate before he was against it. He claims he is an agnostic when it comes to man-made climate change. Seriously man? Show some backbone! Newt is too intelligent not to see the man-made global warming hoax. He excoriated Paul Ryan’s medicare reform plan before backtracking and apologizing. That’s not principled leadership or being a team player for that matter. Newt has shown exceptionally poor judgment in his personal life. He has demonstrated through his adultery an integrity deficiency. I believe Newt when he says he sought repentance and forgiveness. But that doesn’t mean we should ignore his past. If multiple wives could not trust Newt, I’m not so certain the American people, particularly American women, will either.

Which brings me to Mitt. I cannot say I like Mittens. I sympathize that he governed a dark blue state, but Romneycare is just terrible, and we all know it was the prototype for Obamacare. The man has not shown that he’s learned from his mistakes. Mitt supported abortion on demand, yet now he’s pro-life. Like Newt, he’s flipped-flopped on climate change, had a lousy immigration record (free healthcare for illegals) and can’t tell the truth about his book (how he quietly removed a paragraph in favor of nationalizing Romneycare from one edition to the next). He’s displayed no desire to be a transformative leader or offer bold ideas. Romney can’t even find it within himself to support a flat tax. But he has said he wants the tax code to be flatter. Classic Mitt. Romney is an uninspiring, tune-up kind of politician. But Washington doesn’t need a tune up. It needs the wrecking ball that Perry has recognized and called for.

Which is easier to repair? Style or substance? A candidate’s ability to sell himself or his ability to be bought by the establishment wing of the party? I’ll take the guy with substance over style. Perry can and will continue to improve his debate performances. Rick Perry, having courageously entered the arena, has taken some shots and been bloodied by the drive-by media and by his own mistakes on the trail.

Now is the critical moment conservatives must rally around Rick Perry and jump into the arena to fight for him. This means all conservatives who have the ability and means should travel to Iowa and work to help Perry win the caucuses. Entering the arena means boldly proclaiming your support for Governor Perry and defending him through financial contributions, letters to the editor, call ins to talk radio, Facebook posts, political discussions at the office water cooler, etc. We have the opportunity to send a consistent, passionate conservative to the White House. But in order to do so, conservatives must exit the stands and enter the fray. Doing so will be difficult and will require sacrifice. But just about all things worthwhile in life are hard. Freedom isn’t free. I have a beautiful wife and two young children. God has blessed my family tremendously through this country. I’ve been privileged to serve in our armed forces and defend our freedom in Iraq as an Army officer. I am passionate about this country and our future. So what kind of country will we leave our children and grandchildren? I don’t want to look back at life and have any regrets.

As a result, I have bought an airline ticket to Des Moines and will be campaigning for Gov. Perry leading up the caucuses. If Perry is going to re-emerge and win the nomination, then he needs an early win in Iowa. He needs fellow conservatives fighting alongside him in the fray. Will you join me in entering the arena?

    I been working on sending letters to the editors of Iowa newspapers.
    I can’t join the strike force as much as I would like to.
    I going to do everything else that I can, and hope that others that feel strongly will also.

    If you can make a money donation to his campaign please go donate.
    If you can take the time to write to newspapers, websites why you believe in Rick Perry please do.
    Bottom line, he needs us to help him. We need him to become President.
    This is our moment, to take our country back.
    This is our moment to make history.
    Don’t stand on the sidelines waiting for the future to be made.
    We can shape our history together by supporting Rick Perry.

      Unfortunately there is no way to screen for paid stooges, but I hope the visitors to RedState will not fall for this attempt at mind control. It is impossible to notice the avalanche of Perry posts on this site, so much so that RedState is no longer my default GOP blog.

      RedState used to be a great forum for anyone that had a conservative opinion and was willing to debate, but it is now turning into a campaign vehicle for the Perry camp. If I wanted to read how great he is and walks on water, I would have visited Perry’s Facebook page.

    reads this. I am doing all that I can right now, I would consider going to Iowa if I could, but right now I don’t see my way to getting away but I am so happy for anyone who can. I wish everyone from RS who goes to help in Iowa happy campaigning. For myself donating, writing, facebooking, tweets or anything else I can think of I am going to do.

      I love the Teddy Roosevely quote. This is what sets Perry apart
      from the other candidates: he’s not afraid to step on toes, get his hands dirty, take low painful blows. He may have been bloodied, but he’s not beaten, not by a long shot.

      I can’t make it to Iowa myself, but I’m doing what I can from my laptop. Also trying to convice fellow Louisianians to vote Perry–which doesn’t seem too difficult, seeing as he’s our neighbor :) But even though I can’t go to Iowa, this diary still inspired me to keep working as hard as I can right where I am.

    And time is running out to consolidate the conservative vote around a candidate. I’m convinced that Newt is not a conservative – he’s a beltway insider and political opportunist. He’s a conservative when it’s popular.

    You’re assessments of the other candidates, for the most part, are correct, although I might quibble with you about the absolute 100% necessity of executive experience.

    Perry is on my short list at this point. And it’s a very, very short list.

      I do admit I am biased here but I think when everything is said and done and all the vetting is done – Perry will be the last man standing as the anti-Romney candidate (I could be wrong, I hope I am not though).

      Perry is the only real conservative with the record to show it, the governing experience and knowledge. He isn’t perfect but nobody is and I think he is the closest there is.

      I don’t want to get into bashing other candidates but baggage is baggage and in the case of Newt he has a long history of flip-flopping, non-conservative position, ethic violations, the list is too long.

      In the case of Cain: I think he is done, he won’t be electable in the general because of his sexual harassment, womanizing issues. Also, I think because of his lack of any foreign policy, no substance beyond his 999 plan that people are seeing him for what he is. Not to mention if you look closely he really isn’t that conservative in various areas (999 adds into a new national sales tax,, raises tax on most people,. affirmative action empowerment zones added into the tax code, etc).

      A slight possibility that Rick Santorum may catch on but seriously doubt it. Huntsman is far more liberal than Romney in many respects, Bachmann I think did herself in long ago and will never regain.

      I suspect as Newt gets vetted properly people will take a second serious look at Perry and I think this will be his opening. That is my take but will will see.

        Governor Perry is a tenacious campaigner and I believe his consistency and his organization will step up to the plate. Those who have counted him out at times like this in the past, did so at their ultimate defeat.

          I like Perry OK. But I’m very concerned about the unilateral US imposed no fly zone over Syria comment he made yesterday. Has this been discussed on Redstate yet. I probably missed it.

            It?s funny, as even Dr. Condoleezza Rice agrees.

            As a matter of fact, I watched Condoleezza Rice on CNN on Sunday saying that if we cannot get our allies on board, that we need to go it alone in Syria

            Just this past Sunday, she said ?Syrian President Bashar Assad is taking his country to the brink of civil war.? She ?tells CNN?s State of the Union that Assad ?is no friend of the United States? and that his overthrow would be a ?great thing? for the Syrian people, US interests, and anyone seeking a more peaceful Middle East.?

            Condoleezza even said ?the US should apply pressure with its allies or act alone.? She also called for the ?toughest? possible penalties against Assad?s government.

            Additionally, Liz Cheney & John Bolton have been his foreign policy advisors for some time now.

            Perry also had a chance to talk about it further in the debate and as he explained, the No Fly Zone is just one option and listed several others we’d also try first.

      in this election because our country is battered and bruised after enduring 4 years with a wrong headed novice at the helm.

      Maybe if that were not the case the executive experience wouldn’t be as important.

      We have the opportunity to elect Rick Perry to be our president, a man with 10 years of experience successfully managing the 14th largest economy in the world. Our country needs that right now.

      I was privileged to provide Boots on the Ground support and perspective for Doug Hoffman in NY-23 in 2009. If I am physically and medically able, I will do the same for Perry in Iowa this time.

      I took my time to decide, but I am all in for Perry, as my “And the winner is…” diary explains. I hope that I can provide encouragement for those on the fence, both in Iowa and nationally to make the choice.

      It is time to choose, and Rick Perry is my choice.

    This is a really good diary encouraging people to become active in the process. It’s recommended for that alone. I think you’ve done a good job emphasizing Rick Perry’s strengths.

    As an undecided voter though, I have to say that you’ve overreached a bit trying to go after the other candidates which wasn’t necessary in a diary like this. You stated your case for Perry well, and probably would’ve been better off leaving it at that.

    As an undecided voter I can tell you first hand that this diary did not cause me to see Rick Perry any more favorably than I did before, and if anything turned me off a bit.

      My intent was more to rally the troops. I think Hooah Mac and Paula have recently written some good posts on why conservatives ought to get behind Perry. It’s really a critical moment in the primary season. But I appreciate hearing from an undecided perspective. I really just wanted to lay out some of my thought process. It took me a while to lock in with Perry, but I am now solidly convinced he is the best candidate to carry the conservative flag in 2012. I think we need to give voters a very clear choice. A failed Senator-turned President from a dark blue state or a successful conservative governor from a deep red state. The more contrast we draw between our candidate and Obama the better.

    For those who mentioned they want to write editors, in 2007 I found a very cool feature on a conservative website I read a lot. Townhall.com

    You do have to register as you have to login but it’s free and so easy to use. You can reach numerous newspapers with a single letter. You can write one letter and then select the newspapers you want to send that letter to. It lists all the newspaper & publication in your zip code for both regional and local papers. Before you submit your letter, copy and paste it into notepad or whatever as you can only select several newspapers at a time. Then paste your letter back in and select the other papers to send it to.

    But the BEST part is to the left there is the wording “not your newspapers? Click here” link. Click it and you can put in any zip code you want. Let’s say you want to send it to Iowa, Google a zipcode like Des Moines and put that in Townhall, paste your letter (or write a different one for Iowans) select the newspapers and submit.

    I used this a lot in the 2008 election. For example, to tell coal mining states and towns about Obama’s comments on shutting down coal mines which broke right before the elections in West Virginia, I googled coal mining towns in West Virginia (and other states), googled their zip codes and sent letters to them.

    I have signed up to be on the Iowa Perry team. As a former county GOP chairman, I vet the candidates very carefully. By far, Perry has the strongest policies in regard to energy independence, job creation, tax reform, and government reform. In addition, he has executive experience which complements his policy positions.

    As a county elected official, one of the issues very important to me is the 10th Amendment. I have witnessed the local tax burden resulting from unfunded federal mandates on programs which we are required to provide. No other candidate comes close to Perry on tackling this issue. Freedom and liberty depend on states’ rights being returned. The other candidates play lip service, but Perry has lived with federal over-reach as governor and will make that a priority.

    In addition to policy positions, character and integrity are very important. Perry passed the high bar I set for character, integrity, and honesty.

Remember, if 20 people send $10, that’s enough for some radio ads on a small radio station in Iowa or will pay for some flyers going out in the mail or handed out face to face by door knockers. One easy way to reach Republicans in Iowa is to sign up at Smart Girl Politics (you don’t have to be a girl) www.smartgirlpolitics.ning.com Then look through the groups and join the ones that appeal to you and start writing. Join an Iowan group and every time you make a post at that group, an email is sent to its members. They can click on a lick at their email and read your comments.

    After several attempts to vote, out of frustration I emptied my cache and it worked. For some reason that was keeping me from voting. I was able to use the enter button to do so after that.

    Also, read that if one is using FF, to hold the ctrl key while pressing enter, which will make it show up. All three ways have worked for me at different times…. don’t ask me why.

    The last thing I tried was emptying the cache.

    These “gaffes” were really minor. The Libya gaffe was not based on Cain having a lack of knowledge about the Libya situation. It was based on a question asked out of left field without context. Yes, Cain tripped up, but he answered the question. His slow roll answer is actually to be expected considering how he was crucified about his answer regarding Israel’s prisoner release situation. Various conservatives such as Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, and people on this site have come to the same conclusion.

    In addition, using “gaffes” as an argument against Cain while suggesting Perry is far better is ridiculous considering Perry’s distaste for comprehensible English. The “he was for it before he was for it before he was ummm against it” gaffe, the two plus one government agency gaffe, or the other multitude of comments during the debate which were nearly indecipherable (watch one Perry’s performances with closed captioning for some real fun). Using your same logic, I could infer that Perry is not familiar with the federal government and has no clue about his opponents.

    I agree with you that the blame game was rash and ill-advised. There was some strange coincidences but they should have played the whole thing a lot smarter.

    I agree that the move was dumb but i disagree with the idea that Cain lacks integrity or your assessment of its outcome since that is merely a prediction. Even if they got the financing and reporting wrong, where is the evidence you are using to suggest that Cain or Block did it purposely? Regarding integrity, what do you say then, about Perry’s money from the drug company that he misrepresented in one of the debates?

    So in summary, your entire argument against Cain is based on his supposed missteps during the campaign season. You focus on Perry’s experience and completely disregard Cain’s experience. Lame.

    would be comfortable with Cain if he fired Mark Block. As Erick said in a thread a few weeks back, Herman talks about surrounding himself with the best people to fill him in on issues where he’s weak. A fine strategy. But every day that Mark Block is leading his campaign undermines Herman’s promise to indeed use the best people.

    I don’t care about the smoking ad. I do care about shooting from the hip on national TV and making unfounded accusations. in honesty, the whole handling of the harassment accusations has been poor. to be clear, i think the claims are a bunch of hooey, but the cain team’s response has been akin to a chicken without a head.

    and accusing Perry of lying? The article you linked to is patently obvious in its desire to drum up negative feelings toward Perry. He said $5000 — and lo and behold the article says that in the most recent election cycle, in which Perry raised $30 million, Merck donated $5k, just as he said in the debate. No false representation there. And if he raised $30 million in one election, even a total of $30-40k worth of donations given over a 6-8 year period amount to a drop in the bucket.

    You’re a Cain guy. Wonderful. You don’t like that someone unfairly slammed your preferred candidate. Wonderful. I don’t like it either when it happens to mine. YOu’ve taken time to defend him. Wonderful again. But if you’re really that upset about an unfair attack don’t turn around and do the same thing to someone else.

    I really was enthusiastic about Cain’s candidacy and initially felt most comfortable with him and Pawlenty. However, the more I learned about Mark Block, the more disenchanted I became with Herman Cain.

    Great leaders surround themselves with other great leaders. Block is not in that category. The Block hiring decision made me seriously question Cain’s judgment. I also thought Herman showed some naivete in his response to why Congress just wouldn’t raise his 9-9-9 rates. Giving the federal government a new revenue stream (national sales tax) to mismanage made no sense to me. I also grew to realize that having executive policy experience is really useful when running for President. As CEO, Herman had no experience working with a co-equal branch of government. I think there are some congressional crafty career politicians who would run rings around a Cain administration, primarily because I don’t think Cain would determine the right people for the right positions.

    Cain should never have done the Libya interview. He was running on 4 hours of sleep. His staff should have vehemently argued against it. Cain also raised some serious foreign policy concerns with his candidacy when he seemed not to realize China’s nuclear capability.

    Perry on the other hand has brought in some great leaders (Joe Allbaugh comes to mind), and his media and communications team are fantastic. Great hiring decisions. As I said before, I like Herman Cain. I just don’t think he’s ready for the Presidency. Senator or Governor Cain sound a lot better to me.
