PAC with ties to Howard Dean running new ad about McCain’s cancer.

Ageism is the new racism.

So here we go again.

Apparently a PAC that has direct ties to Chairman Dean has decided to run a new ad called “McCain and Cancer”. This is a 30 second spot that so far has only graced the airwaves of MSNBC. GO figure!! Brave New PAC is affiliated with Democracy for America

According to The Caucus here is whats going down.

Two liberal groups – one of them directed by a brother of the Democratic Party chairman Howard Dean – will begin running a graphic attack advertisement Thursday morning raising questions about Senator John McCain’s health. Showing vivid and unflattering images of the fresh scar that appeared on Senator McCain’s face immediately after his last operation for melanoma skin cancer eight years ago, the commercial ends with a screen headline that reads, “Why won’t John McCain release his medical records?”

Funny, I don’t remember Obama having a press conference about his medical records…or birth records if we really want to go there.

The ad comes from the same two groups that recently released an advertisement questioning whether Mr. McCain’s time as a prisoner of war in Vietnam adversely affected his ability to lead.

Democracy for America has as its chairman Howard Dean’s brother, James H. Dean. Federal rules prohibit coordination between outside groups and campaigns or parties.

But don’t worry nothing fishy here….Howard and James apparently don’t talk about this stuff. See, the Times says so:

Daniel Medress, a spokesman for Democracy for America, said James Dean has not spoken with his brother about his activities at the group, which Howard Dean started in 2004. “We don’t coordinate with them,’’ Mr. Medress said of the Democratic National Committee, adding that at family dinners the Dean brothers, “sit there and make small talk, because they can’t talk about their jobs.”

Brad Woodhouse, a spokesman for the Democratic National Committee, said Howard Dean carefully follows all rules and regulations.

Poor guys, limited to small talk at family events. Funny thing though, why have a pre-emptive denial of impropriety when no charge has been levied?

Brave New PAC is affiliated with California-based filmmaker Robert Greenwald, who runs several entities out of his “Brave New” office complex in Culver City; one of them, Brave New Foundation, a non-profit group that runs social issues campaigns, has as the chairman of its board Lawrence Lessig, a prominent Stanford Law School professor who has served as an informal adviser to Mr. Obama on technology policy issues.

Odd, Obama has a guy who runs a PAC that happens to put out attack ads about McCain, as an “informal” adviser. Seems dirty doesn’t it? No worries though, Ben LaBolt says the Obamabus is hungry anyhow:

Ben LaBolt, a spokesman for Mr. Obama, said the campaign had nothing to do with the spots and that Mr. Lessig had only advised Mr. Obama during the primaries, not in the general election. Mr. Woodhouse, the spokesman for Brave New PAC, said that Mr. Lessig is only affiliated with the Brave New Foundation, which operates in isolation from the political action committee. “There’s a fire wall there,’’ he said. “He has no relation to any of the projects we’re doing through the PAC.”

RNC Spokesman ain’t buying it:

Danny Diaz, a Republican National Committee spokesman, said, “The fact that Howard Dean’s brother and an adviser to the Obama campaign are behind despicable and cheap smear ads against Senator McCain is deeply disappointing, but in no way surprising. Barack Obama has promised Americans an elevated debate offering nothing but gutter, Chicago-style politics.”

So here is the rather dispicable add:

How can they justify this sort of tripe? Mr. Woodhouse of Brave New Pac has an answer:

We think this is an election issue, We have pictures of him with a scar to show that he has a history of surgery.

Nice….you stay classy.

The groups reported that they spent $50,000 to show the spot, $35,000 of it coming from Democracy for America and the remainder coming from Brave New PAC.

in every way possible in order to win this election (or any other). No despicable act is too low.

And Obama’s fingerprints are on this.

I saw the ad 3 times during Morning Joe. I also heard it on the radio around 3 PM. Absolutely disgusting ad!

Ex-freaking-actly. I’ve been saying this for weeks now. If these guys want to be ageists, then they shouldn’t have a problem if we decide to be racists, right? All’s fair. After all, since he is a black male, don’t you think we should be worried about the possibilities of him contracting sickle cell anemia?

The RNC should get going on an ad to highlight The Obamunist’s history as a cigarette smoker and how it’s quite possible that he’ll contract lung cancer at some point during the next few years. That picture of him with the butt sticking out of his mouth would be a great one to get plastered all over the print and video media.

That is the least presidential picture I have ever seen. It reminds me of Dave Chappelle.

Thanks for the rec’d and the sickle cell comment…that was just great.

McCain DID release his medical records, something Obama has yet to do.

The left will stoop to ANTYHING. Disgraceful.

that is why I put this line in the diary:

that displays symptoms and adverse affects in childhood. Only about 8% of African-Americans have even one of the affected alleles (which is an effective resistant to malaria) and less than 0.2% have two (which is indicative of sickle-cell disease). If Barack Obama suffered from sickle-cell, it would have been displayed symptoms by now; although his father does come from the area of Africa where the disease is especially prevalent.

would remind the dems that the last president to die in office was IN HIS 40s. And it wasn’t from natural causes.
Yes, yes, I know, it is crass, but true.
I’d also like to remind them that the last old guy in the WH survived a loon trying to asassinate him, cancerous colon polyps, skin cancer and served out his entire two terms.

And from FOX’s front page is this. The link is not right (it directs to Alcee Hastings VILE rant that Barack has NOT yet denounced). I think what ever study this is should be put into an ad by the RNC.

Both presidential candidates are likely to remain ‘healthy’ for another eight years, according to statistical analysis like those used by insurance companies.

Lastly, what losers! I hope and I pray that after Obama looses, Dean, Reid, and Pelosi all get thrown under the bus with Joe Biden. And I am going to laugh like crazy when they make Hillary queen of the Senate. Heh!

One of the things about sickle cell is that it can lay dormant and only come out when unreasonable stress is put on the body. I had a guy in my unit that was able to run like a cheetah and jump out of airplanes with no problems. But when we ruck marched up Pikes Peak with 100lb packs his sickle cell anemia was all of the sudden prevalent. We had to medivac him off the mountain.

Now I am not really implying that Obama has sickle cell just because he is black…but the comparison wrt McCain’s melanoma being indicative of possibly dying while in office is the same in my eyes.

In the end neither should be used in an attack ad….especially when the producer of the ad has direct ties to the DNC Chairman and indirect ties to the Candidate himself.

  • aaronbg

But you know this diary ain’t gonna rec’d itself…;^)….we gotta get this msg out. The more we expose their shenanigans the better.

What you are describing with the is someone with only one of the affected alleles. If he had both sickle-cell alleles, I doubt very seriously if he could have “run like a cheetah” or whatnot. People with both sickle-cell alleles begin to display symptoms at a very early age (younger than 4 or 5) and rarely survive past 50 or so.

But even then, with evidently only affected allele, he did display symptoms under stress. My guess is both that he was younger than Barack Obama’s 47 years and that even then, this was not the first time that he displayed symptoms.

    By the way, was that “run like a cheetah” comment some sort of racial slur? {grin}

But seriously, except under the most extreme conditions, having only one sickle-cell allele is not life-threatening. Indeed, most people with only one sickle-cell allele are completely asymptomatic and if they do display symptoms, it is usually at a very early age. The press may be hiding it (which I honestly wouldn’t put past the MSM) but if Barack Obama had even one sickle-cell allele I would think that he would have already begin to display some symptoms many years ago if he ever was.

But, unless I am mistaken, I take your drift and completely agree with your comments about the ads.

the run like a cheetah reference is more about the fact that when we would run I only ever saw his backside…I run like a hippo…;^)

And what you explained makes perfect sense…and he was around 25 when this happened. But you got the overall point and that is what matters.

This is about the slimiest ad I can imagine. Anything lower than attacking a cancer survivor, “accusing” them of having cancer? I can’t think of anything.

I’ll be quoting you, C17wife…I’ve been thinking about the extreme unlikelihood of any downturn in McCain’s health before 2012 and (I hate to admit) nervous about assassination of either candidate/president….

FWIW, here’s a link to a Politico’s July, 2008 report from the Mayo Clinic on McCain’s being cancer free. Most interesting quote:

He’s previously been diagnosed with melanoma four times, but his doctors said in May he was unlikely to face a recurrence. His last melanoma was removed in 2002.

  • David123

Given the age and vitality of their mothers, McCain should have 20 good years left. Obama – not so sure. I hope Obama has good health, but longevity is not an issue he or his surrogates should be raising.
