Chris Matthews and The Soft Bigotry of Low Expectations

He's an idiot racist or a racist idiot

Last night, as I am sure many of you are aware, Chris Matthews forgot that Barack Obama was Black. In doing so he reminded the public that he is an idiot and a racist.

First, lets take a look at the video…

Really? Did he really just say all of that? I mean, this is a display of white guilt racialism frozen in amber that a scientist could someday use to recreate the likes of Chris Matthews and his ilk long after they have become extinct. It is the soft bigotry of low expectations, as President Bush called it, and it is at the core of many progressives.

Let’s go through the transcript together and deconstruct this little amber gem…

I was trying to think about who he was tonight. It’s interesting: he is post-racial, by all appearances. I forgot he was black tonight for an hour.

First, as Rush and Beck pointed out today, Matthews only forgot for an hour that the President was Black, the rest of the time Matthews clearly views Obama as black. And that, to Matthews, is a hindrance, as we see in the next blurb…

You know, he’s gone a long way to become a leader of this country, and passed so much history, in just a year or two. I mean, it’s something we don’t even think about.

So, after remembering that Obama is Black, Matthews then remembers that black = lesser. This sort of thinking is anathema to the ideas put forward by true deep thinkers and civil rights activists like MLK Jr., yet it is the wheelhouse of the left as Matthews continues to display.

I was watching, I said, wait a minute, he’s an African-American guy in front of a bunch of other white people. And here he is president of the United States and we’ve completely forgotten that tonight — completely forgotten it.

See there, Matthews’ gut tells him that because Obama is black he is lesser, and because he is lesser it is odd for him to be standing in front of the white people. And then, not only is this lesser standing in front, he is … The PRESIDENT. And we have forgotten that.

I wonder if we should gird our loins Chris?

Ahem…Moving on…

I think it was in the scope of his discussion. It was so broad-ranging, so in tune with so many problems, of aspects, and aspects of American life that you don’t think in terms of the old tribalism, the old ethnicity. It was astounding in that regard. A very subtle fact. It’s so hard to talk about. Maybe I shouldn’t talk about it, but I am. I thought it was profound that way.

Chrissy ends his racialist display with a bunch of flowery praise that just boils down to … “No Negro Dialect”. Thanks for that Harry.

Now, on to the clarification, repentance and absolving of sins.

I think something that I‘d mentioned earlier tonight. And I‘m very proud I did it and I hope I can say it the right way. You know, this country has been—and I grew up in a country that was driven apart by race right until the ‘60s. You couldn‘t have a black member of the United States Cabinet. There are no black Cabinet members in the Kennedy administration.

It has been such a big part of our life in big cities, this sort of ethnic debate, ethnic fighting. And then to see the president of the United States who‘s African-American, I was thinking tonight, this isn‘t even an issue tonight.

How far we‘ve come in just a year where it wasn‘t a campaign issue in some parts of the country. It was talked about as something that would hurt him. And it wasn‘t in the room tonight. You can feel it wasn‘t there tonight. And that takes leadership on his part to get us beyond these divisions.

Really, national leadership. And I felt it wonderfully then I saw it almost like an epiphany. And I hope it‘s true, I hope what I saw is true, that we‘ve gotten beyond it. At least—well, in the presidential level, I think. It‘s still going to be out there in American life, but I think he‘s done something wonderful.

I think he‘s taken us beyond black and white in our politics wonderfully so in just a year. I think.

In Matthews’ recollection of the lack of racialist overtones during the SOTU, hardly a unique thing, it becomes apparent that Matthews is aware of his own racialist injections. Making sure to point out that “it wasn’t there”, thus exposing his inner thoughts that he expected it to be there. Then, upon realizing that it wasn’t, Matthews had an epiphany. The epiphany is the realization that you’re the last racist in the room Chrissy.

Having had his epiphanal moment, he engages in the last cleansing act of those afflicted with white guilt. He claims redemption through the leadership of Obama, the black man who Chris Matthews, a white man, put into office.

And just like that…*POOF*…his sins, like those of Harry Reid, are forgiven.

    All liberals suffer paternalistic racism.

When we kick Barry’s sorry socialist butt out in 2012, Chrissy will be there to say that we’re all racist.

Universal racism is a characteristic of progressives like Matthews.

  • penguin2

So that is how the Leftist progressives view us, as an old tribe. Wonder if they have that going around in talking points memos; as EE posted from the mailbag today an email from Cams Cams, telling Erick that he would “not be taken seriously beyond his own tribe.”

If a conservative commentator had said this, the Left would be screaming for their head today.

Matthews is nauseating, and the others just like him make them intolerable to watch or listen to. Now his idol, Pres. Obama, knows how his elitist white friends and supporters really feel about him.

  • Superheater

His racism would be inexcusable, if his facts weren’t in error.

President Obama isn’t the first “African American”, POTUS, he’s the bi/multiracial President.

Maybe Matthews can take some comfort in the fact that his heritage is half white. Maybe he just got confused because, after the tingly feeling ran up his leg, he saw the caucasion half.

Then again, he didn’t say that a few years ago that Obama would’ve been serving him coffee, ala Bill Clinton.

After listening to the first clip, its clear to me that Chris Matthews is still struggling with some deep-seeded guilt. In his second clip, Matthews sounds like a man who’s trying hard to convince himself some something.

Its obvious that Matthews continues to see Obama as a black president, instead of just his president. No wonder he felt compelled to vote for him. I pray that his vote was a first small step beyond racism for Matthews.

To borrow a prescription from Brit Hume, I’d recommend a little “come to Jesus” for Matthews – it would help him, and many like him.

I’m glad that I was able to vote for John McCain with a clear conscience. I sincerely feel sorry for those who couldn’t.

used to refer to their African American fellow citizens?

Great Rush quote from today on the speech and Matthews’ reaction:

“Chris Matthews forgot Obama was black for an hour. I forgot he [Obama] was President.”

This is basically the Identity Politics the Left uses so well. Pitting one group against the other.

On the other hand Conservatives look at the man/woman not where they come from or what “tribe” they are from.

Chrissy is a disgrace to journalism

… Since the 60′s Mr. Matthews. Nice Job
    ( I mean the 1860′s,.. btw)

    (Source: AmericanHeritage.com/Lincoln & Douglass)
The first conversation between Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln on August 10, 1863, remains one of the pivotal moments in American history: when a former slave could enter the office of the president to discuss significant issues and festering problems and, more remarkable still, when the president could seem to enjoy Douglass

I saw that puke say that and really had the same thoughts you did, you wrote it up very well.

One of my good friends once said to me that you can tell what type of person someone is by what they think other peoples intentions are. This is sorta the same. Chris exposed himself, like you wrote, to anyone who actually isnt a racist, because people who arent racists dont tend to see race. I forgot he was black is a very ugly thing to say. Why, Chris? Because he wasnt smoking crack or stealing a car?

Very, very vile. Whats more is this thought probably is indicative of what that clique of people think. I know this isnt new, but the left is built on a foundation of hate of people, which is why so many of them are racist. Disgusting.

serious journalist. Actually I forgot that a long time ago. Even before he had a “thrill” run up his leg.

90% of what motivated people to vote for Obama who had no grasp on the issues was the romance of electing a Black man to the Presidency — first because he was Black, and now because he isn’t Black, I guess.

Matthews has already pledged to be a shill for Obama regardless of what happens, and so I can only conclude that this rhetorical change of heart comes straight from the top, to cover how weak a President he really is.

More places around the world are beginning to be alarmed: Obama only turns left, and he’s basically lame. Next time around Matthews will be telling people: “I really forgot he was handicapped…”

I dunno what’s conditioned me. Political Correctness. Growing up in and continuing to live in the People’s Republic of TaxachusettEs. Yet those would be ceding tenets to the Left. Maybe it was simply from good parenting, good education, good mentoring, or good breeding?

I dunno what it is… but when I see people, I see PEOPLE. I don’t see gender, color, political affiliation, or sexual persuasion. Everyone I interact with is interacted with in the same fashion.

I did not see a black man delivering the SOTU last night.

That said/read… Of course, I let my guard down depending on who I am engaging. That’s human nature. Yet the act of ‘engaging’ and ‘guard dropping’ still adheres to the same ideals. Meaning, I don’t think less of someone that ran a stop sign because of whatever their denominations or persuasions may be. I think less of them for disobeying the law at most and for being inconsiderate at least. So if I don’t know you well, I’d say, “There was a knucklehead on the road today,” vs. saying, “There was a totally annoying @#&*$% on the road today!” all utterly dependent upon how well I know you.

It puzzles me to hear someone like Chris Matthews say the things he said. And Harry Reid. I can understand it when Sharpton and Jackson go there. But not someone like Matthews or even Reid.

These men do not make such statements because of the “inherent racism of the Democratic party,” despite how delicious such a thing would be a joy to witness become exposed (were I to believe it a fact). I honestly do not think that the Democrats of this stripe are de-facto racists.

I speculate that it all comes down to how different our ideologies are wired. I think that, to them, it is simply a playing chip on the field. Something to be parlayed and bandied about. Used as a tool against your opponent. A “Hey, remember how racist we all are?” kinda thing. A strategy of sorts. All part of the game to them.

No, I do not think Matthews and Reid are racist to the core. Yet I do think that they know the game they are trying to play and reluctantly backpedal when they think they’ve stepped in it too far.

In short — No, Chris is not racist through every fiber of his being. He’s just playing one of Alinsky’s commonly deployed tools.

I like that. It’s catchy. Makes me think of “The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys.” Probably couldn’t put it to music, though.

The phrase “soft bigotry of low expectations” has been attributed to several different sources. One of the earliest belongs to former Secretary of Education Rod Paige, in a March 12, 2003 speech to the Commonwealth Club of California.

Today, as I was driving a friend to lunch, he turned and said, “You know, for a moment there I completely forgot that you were Asian. I mean, you didn’t bump into another car while getting out of the parking lot. We haven’t had any close calls merging into the freeway. We’re both still alive!”

And, at the grocery store, the cashier said, “You know, I almost forgot that you were Asian until you handed me your credit card and saw your name, because you spoke with no accent! How do you do speak English so well and eloquently?”

As an Asian-American, I didn’t feel offended at all.

Great article, BTW. Chrissy is the quintessential “Isn’t it wonderful that OUR President can act white for so long I was able to forget he was black?”

Obviously, it disturbs Matthews (and his tingling leg) when he recalls that BH O’Drama IS INDEED black.

When black folks begin to realize that the white people who treat them no differently than anyone else (i.e. no condescension) are their friends, they will finally be free of the DEM Plantation and their white overseerers, Massa Reid, Ma’am Boxer, et al. The only blacks still interested in presenting “The Po’ Negro” meme are the ones still profiting from it, e.g. Jesse, Al, BHO, Rahm, Henry Louis Gates Jr., all faculties of “Black Studies” programs, Rainbow/PUSH, the NAACP, etc….

every single night of the week.

I can’t remember if he is on NBC, CBS or ABC. I keep forgetting where those channels are located on my set-top box.

I noticed in the mirror this morning that my skin is lighter than the President’s, which was a huge wake-up call to me. One of those head-smacking, coulda-had-a-V8 revelations. It’s embarrassing how much time I’ve spent walking around forgetful of my whiteness. God, I just feel so guilty now.

I needed that reminder. Thanks, Christy!
