MEMBER DIARY

Republicans hitting their media stride. Two examples, Buck and Miller.

19 Days

Both of which are backed by Sen. DeMint’s Senate Conservatives Fund.

First up is Ken Buck, Republican challenger to incumbent Democrat Sen. Michael Bennet.

This ad had an almost Gahndi like message to it. “First they ignore you. Then they laugh at you. Then they fight you. Then you win.” Buck reminds me of the happy conservatives of old, Reagan and Kemp style. I think the people of Colorado will be very responsive to this ad. Well done Buck.

Next up is Joe Miller, Republican challenger to Democrat Scott Adams and incumbent Senator – and traitor to her party, – Lisa “Princess” Murkowski:

Joe is having a good time here. The Old Spice ads have become an instant classic in pop culture and capitalizing on that is a smart move by the Miller campaign. Smacking around Murkowski for her entitlement attitude was just icing on top of this already delicious cake. Well played Joe.

Seeing these ads come from these two candidates is no surprise. After all, like I noted above, they are backed by Sen. DeMint and his Senate Conservatives Fund.

fablous–Big rally in CO this week as mail ballots arrive at homes. Ken Buck is doing great.

I would appreciate some local insight into Joe Miller’s campaign. Here is what I see from afar.

    1. What has Joe Miller raised this quarter? Angle did 14 million–Bachmann 5.4 mill–ODonnell 4 million–Rossi 3.8 million-Rubio 5.4 million and Miller has raised? I am beginning to think he has limited money. Just one ad in 4 weeks? AK is a cheap media market and this is the 1st Miller ad since primary day. Has he done other TV ads that I have missed?

    2. The MSM in AK has been all over Miller like dirt on a pig. There was an ugly exchange of emails between Miller and Palin people–other email leaks. What’s going on in AK?

    3. Okay I checked Sunlight foundation for FEC reports on outside spending. Anyone want to hazard a guess as to how much “Teaparty Express” or Jim DeMint’s group or Crossroads or any other conservative group has spent in Alaska since the primary in support of Joe Miller? How about $40K and about 10K of that is DeMint and 10K from teaparty.

I am just reading between the lines but it looks like the conservatives have left Joe Miller hangin on the ledge.

and accused Miller of using FNSB computers to proxy vote before the Alaska Republican convention in 2008 to dump Ruedrich, which violates policy. Miller has not disclosed all his pesonnel files and had stated a couple days ago he will not nor answer questions on the issue.

Lisa Murkowski: Going in $1 million plus and by Sep 30th raised $306,000
The pro Lisa Super Pac (Alaskans Standing Together) raised $805,000
This is all Native Corporation money.

Scott McAdams (DEM) started with near zero, has raised $870,000

Joe Miller brought in $450,000 online
Tea Party Express and Sen. Jim DeMint’s Senate Conservatives Fund $774,716 so far. Independent groups have spent $18,217 on advertising opposing Murkowski.

as noted only 40K of the outside pro Miller help has been post primary

Republican conservatives need to decide if they are going to make an all out support of Miller sooner than later. Alaska has a small media market.
Goal #1 keep out the Dem, he will follow the Obama line as Begich has been doing.
Goal #2 keep out Lisa, she will be nothing but a pain in the rear. I can see her black mailing the GOP if they do not give her earmarks for her supporters, cross over to the Dems as necessary for HER.

    Rasmussen has the race at

    Miller 35
    Murky 34

    Club for Gorwth

    Miller 33
    Murky 31

    Daily Kos

    Miller 35
    Murky 33

…Just like Rubio needed to. Rubio started hitting 40% in September, and has never looked back (he’s now close to 50%).

If Miller doesn’t get to 40% soon, I’m going to start to wonder about his chances…

AKSteveb says that the Miller supporters who live in Wasilla, Mat-su Valley, Fairbanks suburbs do not want to have anything to do with pollsters. They look at pollsters the same way some folks in West Virginia look at ATF agents. I do not think we are going to know until the general poll is counted.

    Miller’s ad was very witty.

There is no better way to say “Sore loser” than having the audience say it themselves.

has Miller kicking tail in the Anchorage area (includes Wasilla, Mat-su Valley). Miller & Murky are tied in Fairbanks. McAdams is doing well in the SE part of AK (Juneau). With the snipping between Murky & Miller, McAdams could portray himself as the adult and sneak in. Although that would be a long shot.

With the aid of the media, Murky & the Dems have ganged up on Miller.

Joe Miller needs to stay focused on the issues. If he can stayed focused, then he can win. If Murky wins, I don’t want her to caucus with the GOP. Let her join the Dems.

The media is hitting Miller hard on being a hypocrite (low income hunting license, unemployment benefits for his wife, medicaid for kids) some years ago although he is running as fiscal conservative. The scare tactics miscontrue his words from states should run benefit programs, not the feds into he will take away all benefits.
The other issue is the using Borough comupters for proxy voting, unethical. Miller will not release the records, so the actual facts are not known but it does look like he is hiding something to many people.
For the conservatives, many who are Christians, the effect of the issue of ethics, will it cause many to stay home instead of voting? I am convinced this is the strategy to depress conservative turn out and we do not have prop #2 on the ballott to motivate social conservatives as in August. I know I will not vote for the Dem or Lisa under ANY circumstances. Because of what is at stake nationwide, I WILL vote for Miller, if I have to crawl over broken glass, strictly on the issues. How many others feel the same way?

  • fbks

Most rural Alaskans vote Dem, but their corporation leaders support Republicans like Murky and Young. I am not sure Miller can ever get more than 35 to 40%.
It will depend on how it breaks between Lisa and Scott, and how many Republicans are swayed by the barrage of negative stories on Miller and cause them to vote Lisa. The thing about Lisa, if she has 35% support how many votes will be lost because she is not on the ballott and intent has to be shown AND the oval filled.

  • AKSteveB

Unless there is something truly criminal in there, why not just come out and say “Yeah I did a bit of my own stuff on boro equipment and the Liberals there went after me, even though stuff like this happens all the time (I’ve worked for the state, trust me it does).. I understand that anyone who has *never* used an employers office equipment for personal use may vote for my opponent. That will no doubt cost me 4 or 5 votes :)

This whole thing has been a death of a thousand cuts, and I am wondering what comes next. Rumor is that Mead Treadwell (Lite Gov candidate running with Parnell) just endorsed Lisa. I’m starting to have a real bad feeling about another shoe dropping. Some of the rats seem to be abandoning ship.

  • AKSteveB

unless the race is very very close. There has been so much chitter chatter about this that the chronic inebriate on 4th Ave (or on Cashman in Fairbanks) knows to fill in the oval and write something close to her name.

  • pilgrim

If you’ll recall Sarah began to have problems mushroom and explode when she started talking and talking about troopergate. When they have no statements by you then they got nothing.

  • fbks

strategy is. Miller must have known that taking on the establishment would cause his past, his family’s past down to and including his friends divorces be gone through with a fine tooth comb.
I can see insisting staying on the issues and the media only looks at his ethics, but they are having a field day. I doubt there is anything serious, but he will get no slack that the incumbents receive from the media.
If Miller pulls this off it will not be the end of the witch hunt.

  • AKSteveB

and neither does anyone else though Rasmussen took a shot at it. What I am pretty sure of is; whatever Miller’s percentage is, it will either stay at whatever the core conservative percentage is, which I would guess is somewhere in the thirties, or will go down if he just stays silent. I think 1 or 2 percent may be the difference in this thing, and he isn’t going to get that unless he somehow goes on the offensive.

  • AKSteveB

That if he wins, it still won’t be the end of it.
