I was livid at the treatment of the flags and callous disregard for proper flag disposal….then….I remember that the flag that we all respect only has 50 stars on it. Don’t those look like the 59 varieties (57+2 not visited)? That would be the Obamanation flag, not Old Glory. Quite a similarity.

….I was thinking of writing this in a diary but this open thread will do.

I want to formally apologize for my behavior with some of the new people who have shown up in the past week or so. I may have let my zeal go unchecked and pounced when not appropriate. I do not know if any of the posters that I confronted still remain on the site or not or whether they were indeed trolls. My gut tells me I did the right thing but I am merely a citizen sentry of this site and have no authority beyond that of any other poster. I promise to try to tone it down so as not to dissuade the seekers of truth who come to this site. I sincerely hope that I have not brought dishonor to the site. And to Moe, I apologize for stepping on your authority.

Thank you all for a great site that has taught me so much in my 7 months as a member.

How exactly did the Dems go from having no flags at all to having so many flags in garbage bags? Everybody knows that for anyone other than a Republican to touch a flag is a paradox of nature, an impossibility equivalent to perpetual motion or time travel.

This means that the Dems must have paid forced Republicans to bring in these flags, then bin them. Which leads one to ask: how did a bunch of limp-wristed, gun-hating liberals force red-blooded, heterosexual conservatives to perpetrate such a dirty deed?

    • Hooah_Mac

When I tell dirty little racialists – and apparently gay-baiters – that they need to explain why they’re tracking mud on other people’s sites, I expect them to do that.

Now shoo. And consider this: there are considerably less sad sexual fetishes out there than the one that you’re trying to indulge in here.

          • DriftersLuck

And, TexasTom, you’ll find some of other American flags in the trash after the Republican Convention. It’s just the behavior of the unconscious mind.

According to sources with strong Michigan ties, the Secret Service has conducted a security sweep of the home of Romney?s sister. Romney was raised in Michigan, where his father served as governor.

However, one campaign operative familiar with the working of a presidential-level campaign cautioned that a sweep of such a location could have been conducted in advance of Romney appearing as a surrogate ? not the vice presidential nominee ? at an upcoming McCain campaign stop in Michigan.

I just don’t think we should get righteously indignant at their treatment of the flag when more than half of them probably don’t know the proper destruction methods of the American flag. And the other half are simply unconscious of what they were carrying.

So, they get zapped by Absentee for not showing the flag and get zapped again for improperly disposing. It’s a no-win.

    And…if this "http://partyblock.stores.yahoo.net/amflagnap.href">
    napkin flag
was handed out at a 4th of July picnic…what would you do with it when finished using it?

I have no doubt that at the Republican convention similar things will happen that show “unintentional” disrespect for the American flag.

    • aaronbg

…I said that because you have been here so long without commenting much. So in essence I was defending you as not being a troll and I tried to do it with humor. And in response you say I am using slurs…what a pity.

          • aaronbg

I know how long you have been here because your profile doesn’t change when you change your username.

As far as the overall thread goes:

People are jumping on you because you inferred that Absentee photshopped the flags in the trash. Absentee is well respected and provides outstanding articles. This week he is at the DNC covering it for RS. You stepped in a pile of crap on your own when you leveled charges against a respected contributor and deservedly you were derided for that comment. The DNC disrespected the flag of our nation, first by actively avoiding it, then by disposing of it improperly. So get on board the unity train and show your angst with the Dem party. Or be a moby. Your choice.

  • HerbC

The question remains, why did it take so long
for the DNC to even display the flag? The DNC believes that the flag is nothing more than a party favor to be displayed at the most opportune times. They might as well have been
passing out Mardi Gras beads at the same time.

They could use them and then not throw them away. See? Win-win.

I have several small flags from various things (napkins not included — let’s not get silly). I’ve either kept them, or given them away.

I believe, unlike certain Dems, that it’s more than a “piece of cloth.” I give it respect, even in my own home — I would sure-as-hell treat it with respect out in the open.

          • Richard_CT

I didn’t accuse absentee of photoshopping, I merely pointed out that my 12 year-old niece could have created those pictures with photoshop. I don’t accept that the DNC disrespected the flag… it’s been on display at the convention, and I don’t think that you can hold the DNC responsible for it ending up in the trash. Can absentee guarantee that the flag wasn’t put in those bags by cleaners? Does leaving the flag behind at a convention also count as “unpatriotic?”

I hope that absentee will find similar pictures at the GOP convention. But I doubt that he or she will even bother to look for them.

            Goodbye.

          • Tim_Schieferecke

            That’s how it should look.

          • Tim_Schieferecke

And yes, the cleaners probably did pick up a lot of them. It’s part of their job to pick up the things people cast down and walk on before they have a chance to clean up. Is it any better to throw the flag down like an empty popcorn tub or used syringe then to put it in the trash? Not in my estimation.

          • ekevlar11

Ok, I’ll definitely give you that one. Seems like they would want to collect some of the memorabilia.

    Story truly debunked..

    http://talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/214283.php

According to a article just out from Huffington Post, the story about flags from the Democratic National Convention being thrown away is simply false. The story was jumped on and apparently authored by the McCain campaign. But the real tell is down in the Huffpo piece where it traces the story to none other than Fox News’ Carl Cameron.

Longtime readers of TPM will remember that back in October 2004 this site caught Cameron publishing a series of fabricated quotes attributed to John Kerry on the front page of the Fox News website.

After I placed a series of calls to Fox News inquiring about the Kerry story, the story was eventually pulled, and Fox was forced to issue an apology and retract the fabricated story. Fox spokesman Paul Schur told TPM: “Carl [Cameron] made a stupid mistake which he regrets. And he has been reprimanded for his lapse in judgment. It was a poor attempt at humor.”

Why anybody would believe anything this joker says is difficult to fathom. But he’s good enough for McCain.

    • Moe_Lane
