Insurgents Pick On The Wrong Convoy

What Happens When 250 Terrorists Face 30 Marines
“It was a good day for the Marine Corps. We killed a lot of bad guys, and none of our guys were seriously injured.”

The short version of this story is simple.

One shot. One kill.

The long version is so very worth reading. It’s the story of what happened when a group of Marines were returning from a long patrol and were attacked with RPGs and machine guns in the city of Shewan, Afghanistan.

Here is a brief excerpt:

The vicious attack that left the humvee destroyed and several of the Marines pinned down in the kill zone sparked an intense eight-hour battle as the platoon desperately fought to recover their comrades. After recovering the Marines trapped in the kill zone, another platoon sergeant personally led numerous attacks on enemy fortified positions while the platoon fought house to house and trench to trench in order to clear through the enemy ambush site.

If that doesn’t put a little ooh-rah in your blood I can’t help you. The article is a must read. Thirty United States Marines were ambushed and, over the course of the subsequent eight hours, proceeded to teach 250 bad guys an extremely valuable life lesson: Don’t ambush United States Marines!

they should be getting a ticker tape parade, but I doubt that will happen. A well trained Marine and his weapon are a very dangerous foe. Semper Fi!

I would hope to see some serious medal recommendations from this action.

The best part of a different article (that I can’t find) was that the terrorists had been bragging for months about how much stronger they were than the Marines. How do you spell “lost face”.

Heh.

Great job Marines. Again.

Great job Marines. This country has counted on you since 1775 and you’ve never let us down.

On a different note – whu didn’t I read about this in the MSM? I think I know the answer to that question.

I found it

earlier on BlackFive, second story down. It’s also on Ace of Spades and This ain’t Hell. I’m still having problems trying to link, or I would. Anyway, the Marines kicked some serious butt, the sniper sounds like what most would expect of a Marine sniper. I’m sure Carlos Hathcock would be proud. Oooh-Rah.

OoooRah!

That’s what they pay them for. To kill people and break things. When it positively has to be destroyed overnight. Very motivating read. Thanks Caleb.

I may not agree with what you say but I’ll defend your right to say it to the very death.

Let us regard in awe yet another act of incredible bravery and superb professionalism by the Marines.

And thank God for all who serve us in the armed forces this Thanksgiving.

Awesome

One of the things in this life that comforts me is knowing that somewhere there are marines itching to whoop some butt and that being outnumbered is meaningless to them.

The insurgents are clearly inferior fighters. If you execute an ambush and don’t kill at least a quarter of your enemy you’re doing it wrong.

I’m grateful that the insurgents suck. I’m even more grateful for Marines.

I’m posting this on my blog. It’s good to hear something right going on with our country for once.

The greatest evil…is conceived and ordered (moved, seconded, carried, and minuted) in clean, carpeted, warmed, and well-lighted offices, by quiet men with white collars and cut fingernails and smooth-shaven cheeks who do not need to raise their voice. Hence, naturally enough, my symbol for Hell is something like the bureaucracy of a police state or the offices of a thoroughly nasty business concern. -C.S. Lewis

Designated Marksman, not sniper, but close

Rottimer Wednesday, November 26th at 9:49AM EDT (link)

Several year ago the Marine Corp added a “designated marksmen” to their platoon makeup. They carry what basically comes down to an M16 with a scope and slightly longer barrel. Generally, they’re the person with the highest rifle range score in the platoon.

Scout sniper school is entirely different and requires weeks of training. And the traditional marine sniper provides deadly accurate, but not rapid fire.

Though I have been out of the corp for a couple of years now and things might have changed (they often do). So take that for what you will.

I'd like to meet this Marine some day

kowalski (Diary) Wednesday, November 26th at 11:23AM EDT (link)

Maybe at Camp Perry, and give him my thanks and pay my respect. I know how difficult it can be to concentrate with a precision rifle for 30 minutes at a time, in controlled conditions on a firing range where nobody is shooting back at you. This is amazing:

During the battle, the designated marksman single handedly thwarted a company-sized enemy RPG and machinegun ambush by reportedly killing 20 enemy fighters with his devastatingly accurate precision fire. He selflessly exposed himself time and again to intense enemy fire during a critical point in the eight-hour battle for Shewan in order to kill any enemy combatants who attempted to engage or maneuver on the Marines in the kill zone. What made his actions even more impressive was the fact that he didn’t miss any shots, despite the enemies’ rounds impacting within a foot of his fighting position.

Eight hours of sustained and accurate precision rifle fire under battle conditions while being shot at is just beyond belief.
