Teh Twitter – Open Thread

YOU HEARD ME

Teh Twitter. Yeah. I’m hip. What of it?

Let me tell you something about Twitter. Despite the many humor blogs you’ve seen written, most people on Twitter are not sending Tweets (yes, that’s really what they are called … sigh) highlighting every mundane detail of their lives. “About to eat chicken” … “Eating Chicken” … “Done with Chicken” … “Remember the part where I was eating the chicken? That was awesome” … this is not, some of you may be surprised to learn, what Twitter is all about.

Twitter is a fast moving environment for commentary and to share articles, news, links, photos and essentially a snapshot of what’s happening on the web and in the world, in brief but sometimes enlightening or hilarious bursts, which don’t allow for too much embellishment, too much verbosity, or too much pompous over-stylizing of the way in which one speaks and communicates what thoughts or above-mentioned links which they may be trying to share.

In other words, no sentences like the one I just typed.

If you aren’t familiar with Twitter, the first thing you’ll need to do is set up an account. Go ahead, I’ll wait. Now that you are on teh Twitter, you want to start following people. The way to do this is to go to their @twitter address and click on FOLLOW under the name. Easy! Now if only you knew WHO to follow … (cough @CalebHowe cough)

Following the right people is the key to enjoying Twitter. To that end, I’m going to make some suggestions. As this is an Open Thread, discuss what you will, but I invite you, in the tradition of #followfriday, to share your Twitter recommendations. (If you aren’t familiar with hashtags ask in the comments.)

Redstate on Twitter: @Redstate(obviously), @EWErickson, @jeffemanuel, @BrianFaughnan, @CAYankee, @SorenDayton, @MoeLane, @BaseballCrank, @Josh_Painter, @BillSTL, @Cianfrocca, @LeonWolf, @Kevinholtsberry, @MarkImpomeni, @RobertBluey, @JamesRichardson, and have I mentioned @CalebHowe?

Redhot Contributors: @simpson316, @aaron_gardner, @VladimirRS, @JadedByPolitics, @mbecker908, @RSBooBooKitty

Redstate Alums: @Yousefzadeh, @BDomenech, @SteveDillard,@HunterBaker, @JSTrevino

And some personal recommendations. Take my advice that you should take my advice: @JakeTapper (possibly my number one recommendation), @AndyLevy, @EdMorrissey, @AllahPundit, @LizMair, @AmSpec, @KarlRove, @streetwise_IT, @SteveFoley, @MediaLizzy, @right_examiner, @FredThompson, @BOTeleprompter, @MichelleMalkin, @snarkandboobs, @Lileks, @JTLol, @MKHammer, @vermontaigne, @collegepolitico, @MelissaTweets, @Duchess_Rebecca, @JPFreire, @JimmyTheNotable, @AKGovSarahPalin, @scrowder, @johnnydollar01 … you know this is getting too long.

Here you go, these are who I recommend: FOLLOW US. I’ll elaborate on some of my selections in the comments below.

So now you know. And don’t forget, in addition to #tcot, mark your posts with #rs to identify yourself as a proud RedStater and to have your tweets sorted into the #rs searches.

Now let’s hear your #followfriday recommends, eh?

  • http://www.nighttwister.com NightTwister

I mean, really. If someone is following you that is following 68,364 others, do you really think he’s reading anything you tweet? I’ve found I can reasonably follow about 100 people. Beyond that, it’s just noise.

    • Caleb

      your OWN address!

      • http://www.nighttwister.com NightTwister

Going on 10 days now…. I have a new site that I manage myself (http://www.nighttwister.com) but I’m having to rebuild from scratch.

        I’m obviously @nighttwister

Don’t be offended if I don’t follow you. I’m concentrating on local issues in Northern Colorado right now, so that’s where most of my follows are going.

  • Caleb

    Yep, don’t forget @tommyxtopher!

    • $peciallist

      @IMAO is funny also…

    • Caleb

You really should add Tommy. His white house tweets are invaluable.

Hmm. That didn’t sound right at all.

…how many Star Trek tweets from @JeffEmanuel and @EWErickson lately, it may be more appropriate than you realize…

I never liked real-time chat, back when. And I’m not interested in Twttier.

I’m a BB/Usenet guy and always will be. I don’t want short ‘bon mots’ (most of the time, anyway).

I like lengthier (though not *too* “lengthier” – some of the diaries around here can get a little on the long side!) and the more in-depth analysis that a diary or BB posting allows for. I like that you can take time to post something thought-out, and I like that it allows for you time to formulate responses and rebuttals.

Maybe I’m not hip, but I just don’t care for ‘sensory overload’ mediums. I like my bites larger, and more spaced out. :)

I suppose I should login to tweetdeck and see what they are saying so I can share it on Facebook and digg the good stories…and occasionally post something on reddit just to piss off the lefties…did I miss anything…;^)

Oh, and I follow Caleb, Aaron and George–I highly recommend following them. :-)

First of all, it’s Jake Tapper, darn you! But unlike, say, David Shuster, Tapper isn’t made of suck.

Really, his is one of the most useful news feeds on Twitter. And on top of that, he actually understands the medium. His sentences use whole words, not cht spk abbrviations. You can’t really tweet if you don’t follow @JakeTapper.

    • $peciallist

Between Jake and Tommyx, it’s like your sitting right next to Helen at the pressers….but without the smell…..

BTW, Palin’s Twitter feed, like those of many politicians, is only sporadically informative, but the writing style definitely suggests that the Gov. does her own tweeting.

Sanford has lately been doing a series of Tweets on waste in SC govt.

Vivace tidal-generators: Vivace hydro-power These new Tidal waters Electrical Generators are for lower speed forces. Why is this important? Well, the original (and for some reason unimaginative yet what people have been stuck on) Windmill or Propeller shaped/driven generators need higher forces to work yet if the forces are too great they rip-apart. Prop-gen Tidal often turns nice natural Tidal Current Flows into Tidal CHURNS which lands up killing as many fish as the number of KW they put out (yes, exaggeration but being silly to make the point).

This new method may be put into practice off the coast of Detroit (Detroit River, potentially into some of the Lakes also) in order to produce power. This new method is “supposed” to be easier to produce, maintain, more reliable, etc…. but we will see. FINALLY, we may see a reasonably priced (and therefore, viable) option for Tidal Power.

Yes, Tidal forces are generally more reliable than WIND force power generation.

If you aren’t familiar with the Fox News show Red Eye, then I feel sorry for you. Go to YouTube, look it up, come back and thank me,

Red Eye’s @AndyLevy is one of the funniest tweeters out there. He also is a great source of good links and is great about replying to questions. And his Twitter segments on RedEye are priceless.

Go ahead and follow him now. I have spoken.

  • streetwise

Actually, Twitter took a little getting used to. But now that I’m getting the hang of it, it is a great tool to reach people, to spread good articles (one’s own or other people’s) and to find out things you wouldn’t otherwise re politics.

    So Tweet On!

    @streetwise_IT

Captain Ed is one of your favorite bloggers. Yes, I’m speaking for you. If you are on the right and online I have little doubt of the truth of this.

Well his Twitter feed is just as indispensable as HotAir.com is. He’s funny, he keeps you in the know, and he “gets” twitter.

Likewise, the other HotAir pundit, AllahPundit. Allah is a prolific tweeter, with a huge following, and for good reason.

And lastly, you can’t go wrong with MichelleMalkin. I’d say her feed is sassy but she might not care for that. It’s a must though.

The Hot Air tweeps, simply, are made of awesome. And I’m not saying that just because Ed lets me talk Star Trek on his show.

Yes, as said you don;t need to follow a ton of people, so just pick the few you like to communicate with or hear from. I like to use it for certain local news updates which I know of happenings well before they are made publically available.

    Here’s a few more I follow:
    @caseymercier @CClinger @ExurbanJon @GoldwaterInst @JeffFlake @retiredfirecapt @VodkaPundit

And do not forget to follow, and be quickly banned by @McCainBlogette for espousing conservative ideals. Something she is against.

Oh and of course the very best person to follow is this guy @phxgonline

There really was life before email and cell phones made time off impossible! Hell, I don’t even work on any regular basis and I don’t have time to keep up with all this stuff.

    • janis

is more than I want to invest in terms of time. And I’ll out myself right now–I have never in my life done any text messaging and I don’t feel the need to. Watching some of the young folks doing it, I marvel at how fast they can put in a message when it’s all I can do to see the damned letters on the key.

But then again, I didn’t even allow my husband to get me a cell phone until Dec. of ’06, and that was only because I have two young grandkids and two elderly parents that I help take care of. And now I shall lumber off to join the other dinosaurs who are waiting for that asteroid to hit.

      • Achance

are totally foreign concepts to them. When they go to work in real jobs you want to enroll them in ESL classes because real, live standard English is not their native language.

Most of that technocrap is just status symbols to make unimportant people think they are or look like they are important. If you really are important, they’ll wait for the letter, memo, or face to face meeting.

        • Finrod

Back pre-web, there was a lot of good writing on Usenet. You could make a name for yourself back then just by posting intelligently on news.groups. There are days when I consider getting back into Usenet (or as we used to call it, net news) just for the retro value as much as anything else. Heck I’d newgroup alt.politics.redstate if I had a decent solution for moderating it; first rule of any moderated Usenet group is that it will grow to the point that it overwhelms its moderator.

          • Achance

        • mom2oneson

I just know he was a pro-life candidate and some mother’s of large families that I know really liked him. I am shocked that a school that is at least Catholic in name would have a pro-life politican arrested for going on campus. If he was disrupting class or something that would be different. It was obviously targeted at him since the people with him were given an option.

        • JadedByPolitics

so intelligent that it has warped his sense of normalcy….I mean I don’t think personally I have ever heard a more highly intelligent person speak! He then warps it by not reigning in his thoughts….I do think he is a very good man with a large heart!

Jay Sekulow is reporting that yesterday, the Dept. of Homeland Security officially pulled the “terrorist” report and that Janet Napolitano is distancing herself from the report.

At the same time, Napolitano is mentioned as being in the top six Supreme Court nominees B. Hussein Obama is considering.

    Coincidence?

Napolitano has ZERO chance of getting confirmed. The GOP would die on that hill. But it would be savvy politics to nominate Napolitano, see her shot down in flames and then nominate a perceived “moderate” in comparison to Napolitano. In this scenario, a liberal like Sotomayor gets to look measured and sober and gets confirmed much easier than if he had nominated her first.

Ok, I have one day to see the South Rim of the Grand Canyon and I do not know anyone who has been there. I am looking for what are the not to miss things in the South Rim of the Grand Canyon so I do not miss out before returning to Las Vegas for a conference on Monday. Any help would be much appreciated.

    • mbecker908

Don’t miss it and don’t fall in. Sorry about the side trip to Vegas. Don’t buy any real estate.

Actually, if you only have one day, just do the “tourist” stuff. It’s obvious. And it’s also awesome. Infinitely better in person that in pictures. You might want to opt for a plane ride or a helicopter trip under the rim. Best part, it drives the Econuts crazy, they’ve been trying to ban them for years.

      • DONTREADONME

that was very funny. My wife saw your comment before I did and was cracking up, then I read it and laughed. Thanks for the suggestions, I think my wife and I are going to do the helicopter trip tomorrow but we were not sure when we drove by the helicopter tour facility when we drove by. Now I think we may just go and do that. BTW, we flew into Vegas and stayed two nights with only one full day. Vegas was quite disappointing, I had more fun in Disney World. Going to the small arms confernce in Vegas on Monday for my last day so I will be doing some work then, and I am out, hopefully not to disgusted from all the prostitute advertisements handed to me by the peddlers on the sidewalks.
