#FollowFriday Open Thread

Yeah it's about teh Twitter. That's how I roll.

Teh Twitter.

Once felt dumb to email about phone calls. Then came blogging email. Then tweeting blogs. And now, I’ve CALLED about tweets. Circle of dumb.
9:59 PM May 2nd from TweetDeck

… and now I’m blogging about calling about tweeting about blogging about emailing about calling … sigh.

Twitter had a lot to do with the successful pushback on the Playboy article and the Letterman “jokes”. It has helped drive a number of big stories the last two weeks. Like it or not folks, it’s here to stay. Well, for a while at least. It’s also a great way to keep up with what Redstate is doing and to annoy the snot out of @markosm. If you’re in the Redstate Army, it’s also a great way to track alerts. Resistance, in other words, is futile. You will be assimilated.

This is an OPEN THREAD. Feel free to use it to pimp your Twitter feed. See below the fold for my own recommendations.

Redstate Front Pagers on Twitter: @Redstate(obviously), @EWErickson, @jeffemanuel, @BrianFaughnan, @CAYankee, @SorenDayton, @MoeLane, @BaseballCrank, @Josh_Painter, @BillSTL, @Cianfrocca, @LeonWolf, @Kevinholtsberry, @MarkImpomeni, @RobertBluey, @JamesRichardson, and have I mentioned @CalebHowe?

Redhot Contributors: @simpson316, @aaron_gardner, @VladimirRS, @JadedByPolitics, @mbecker908, @RSBooBooKitty

Redstate Alums: @Yousefzadeh, @BDomenech, @SteveDillard,@HunterBaker, @JSTrevino

And some personal recommendations. Take my advice that you should take my advice: @JakeTapper (possibly my number one recommendation), @AndyLevy, @EdMorrissey, @AllahPundit, @MichelleMalkin, @MKHammer, @HeyTammyBruce, @LizMair, @AmSpec, @KarlRove, @streetwise_IT, @tommyxtopher, @SteveFoley, @MediaLizzy, @right_examiner, @FredThompson, @BOTeleprompter, @blueshelled, @snarkandboobs, @Lileks, @dahlhalla@JTLol, @speciallist, @vermontaigne, @collegepolitico, @MelissaTweets, @Duchess_Rebecca, @JPFreire, @JimmyTheNotable, @AKGovSarahPalin, @scrowder, @johnnydollar01, @IMAO_, @gclaghorn @Skye820, @TheAnchoress, @EdDriscoll, @Ozark_sky, @Amy_M_Miller, @TomCrowe, @RandyStreu, @TheRightScoop … ok, seriously getting too long.

Here you go, these are who I recommend: FOLLOW US.

So now you know. And don’t forget, in addition to #tcot, mark your posts with #rs to identify yourself as a proud RedStater and to have your tweets sorted into the #rs searches.

Now let’s hear your #followfriday recommends, eh?

UPDATE: @MelissaTweets shares some very useful insights regarding Twitter success.

to click to “follow” the large group?

      • Caleb

Retweeting is essentially a process of copying what someone else said, and resending it. So for example I would copy the text of something you sent on twitter, then click on the REPLY button. In my reply, I’d paste what you said. Then, in front of your reply name, before the @ symbol, I just insert RT. Voila. A retweet!

Of course, if you are using tweetdeck or similar, you just push the retweet button and that’s that.

The Blackberry went the day I retired. The only people with my cell number are my family and my clients. My email has God’s own filters on it. This box has an on-off switch and RedState and a couple of gun and boat sites are the only places I ever go on the ‘net. And when the World still bothers me, all I have to do is leave the cell phone home and take off on the boat; a half hour from my slip and my boat and the ocassional navaid are the only things you can see that have visibly been touched by man’s hands.

    • janis

Mostly because I have elderly parents who live some 65 miles away and two small grandchildren as well. Son and daughter in law can’t believe that I don’t stick it in my pocket when I am playing with the kids outside. Knowing that bad news will always find you faster than good news, I just don’t feel the need to be instantly available 24 hours a day. That’s why I have an answering machine on my home phone and made sure to set up voice mail as soon as I got the cell phone.

Being “always connected” to the world today is not a comfort. Being able to “just be” without comment is the only thing that preserves my sanity.

      • mom2oneson

When I got ours when we were using public transportation and I wanted to be able to call for help if necessary due to some health issues with my son. A few times when we had to be somehwere for a long time (like 6 or 8 hours!) I’ve let him buy a game. Friends don’t understand it’s not for incoming calls! An “emergency” to them is calling their husband on his way home from work to pick up bacon or having to call their own mother because their 6 month old has a runny nose and they need someone to talk about it with. I don’t care what people use cell phones for but it annoys when they don’t understand convenience vs emergency and why I don’t give out my number.

  • DONTREADONME

    http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/06/13/weapons-makers-look-overseas-pentagon-scales/

First and foremost, this is what happens when you cut spending on defense systems that private companies have invested large sums of IR&D funds into. These private defense contractors will try to sell them to other countries. Mind you there are legal hurdles that can be jumped to do this with say the F22 or the Boeing C17s but other technologies will be restricted for export by the ITAR and other export control laws.

That said, defense contractors and military hardware and technology scientists and engineers need to feed their families too. We can not use any knowledge we have gained in our career working for the DoD, but that can not stop us from coming up with new technologies and science that is unrelated. I fear the defense cuts will cause some of our finest scientists and engineers to seek employment to leave defense and not return or move to other allied nations that may see a need for advancing their military technology.

From my perspective I hope that I continue to work in the defense field, if I lose my job I do not know what my knowlege and experience will be good for. That said, it is quite annoying to see my budget cut significantly while saving a stupid mouse in San Fransico with a much bigger budget than I have ever seen.

    and

    http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/06/13/judge-rules-terrorist-sue-bush-administration-lawyer-torture-claim/

Both these stories are of great interest for us. One is that a judge has allowed the lawsuit to move forward to sue a former Bush adminstration lawyer for drafting legal opinions about “torture”. Well, here’s to all of you lawyers working in JAG doing legal reviews or under the administration supervision, be careful what your opinion says because now you can be held liable. That’s right when the next administration comes into power you are on the firing line. And the judgement was made in San Fransico CA, who would have guessed.

A target on my back? Tough on people like me? You don’t even know me. Slapnutz is a nickname I got in the Marine Corps from my friends when I was in Iraq, and it’s a play on my last name. I didn’t think it was offensive, nor did I think it would induce a round of sarcasm. And no, I don’t think I should reconsider it. I read Redstate regularly, but never really posted before. I used the open thread as an opportunity to show some of you guys something else that I’m interested in. Sort of a break from politics, that I find fascinating. Thanks for making a newb feel welcome. You guys are awesome.

    “conform and celebrate diversity?.or else!!!”

    • Aaron Gardner

I only tried to give you a piece of advice. You got all defensive like a child.

Oh and that is quite a pitty party for a supposed Marine .

And I love it when people quote my sarcastic sigline and don’t even realize the sarcasm..

      • http://ghosthound.com slapnutz

I was explaining to you the nickname that you felt I should change. Not a pity party. Just responding to the idiocy that ensued after I simply posted a link in an open blog. Supposed Marine? That’s what really inflames me. I’m not even quite sure how to respond to that. Suggest I change a nickname you no nothing about, suggest I’ll be posting with a target on my back on a like minded website, but “supposed” Marine?

Actually, I respect you guys for your insight and entries. Which is why I come to this website. Particularly GC, and EPU. That’s why I was surprised at the responses. Look, I took your suggestion as a bit of an attack and I returned fire. I apologize for that. I’d like to keep posting at Redstate.

Oh, and I do get the sarcasm in your tagline, that’s why I quoted it.

        • Aaron Gardner

Your nickname could be considered offensive to some, because of this and your status as new, and the fact we know nothing about you, you should see how this might be a distraction from any valid point you may be making.

When I said moderators are tough on people like you, I meant people who are argumentative and belligerent, which you were being when I suggested you take a second look at your screen name.

And yeah i said supposed Marine…I don’t know you from Adam, but the marines I do know don’t act like children when given some advice. Maybe I should have used the word “behoove” so that you would have felt more comfortably receiving advice.

As far as the pity party goes, well I guess the whole “Thanks for making a newb feel welcome” comment could be taken another way, not sure what way.

Keep your screen name if you want, I could care less, but if you look around you’ll notice most of us try to avoid names like yours. Additiionally one of the posters who you say you respect now thinks you are a tool because you chose a locker room nickname to represent you here. Stick to your guns…you’re doing great.

          • http://ghosthound.com Leatherneck

Fair enough. Can’t help the but throw shots though huh? Apologies to GC and EPU as well.

          • Aaron Gardner

            This name is much better.

So about this paranormal stuff….do you see dead people?

          • http://ghosthound.com Leatherneck

well…it’s an interesting story actually. Pretty long, but long story short…When I was 8 years old my Grandfather passed away unexpectedly. I woke up one night, and I saw him in the corner of my room. He looked so happy, and I wasn’t at all afraid. After that, I followed paranormal stuff very closely, even to this day. He was the reason I joined the Marine Corps. He was an WWII veteran, and purple heart recipient. The day he died, he still has shrapnel in his back from when his tank was blown up.

So, I guess that one time I did see a dead person, or at least I thought I did.

During the long days in Iraq, I used to tell my squad ghost stories by the motor pool. It seems kind of lame, but they were all into it. I guess it was some kind of entertainment to look forward to. In a way, I think it even helped us deal with death a little better as well.

          • Aaron Gardner
          • http://ghosthound.com Leatherneck

I was there when the war first started, and I was Motor T so we traveled all over the southern part of the country. I started in February off loading equipment at Port Shuaiba in Kuwait. The night the war started, we moved from Shuaiba to Camp Matilda which was right at the border. After the initial Arty barrage, we moved across the border into the oilfields which had already been lit on fire by the Iraqis. We mostly lived out of our trucks during this time. But, eventually settled down at Camp Viper in the middle of the desert. I couldn’t even tell you were it was. It was pretty amazing though, the network of small camps and ammo supply points set up around the country so quickly. We mostly ran missions from there that took us to Diwaniyah, An-Nasariyah, and eventually Baghdad. (were I spent Easter Sunday) Our unit, Transport Support Group, ran the longest overland supply line in the history of the Marine Corps stretching more than 600 miles.

We were even awarded a Presidential Unit Citation which reads:

Navy Presidential Unit Citation was for extraordinary heroism and outstanding performance in action against enemy forces in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM from 21 March to 24 April 2003. During this period, I Marine Expeditionary Force (MEF) (REIN) conducted the longest sequence of coordinated combined arms overland attacks in the history of the Marine Corps. From the border between Kuwait and Iraq, to the culmination of hostilities north of Baghdad, I MEF advanced nearly 800 kilometers under sustained and heavy combat. Utilizing the devastating combat power of organic aviation assets, coupled with the awesome power resident in the ground combat elements, and maintaining momentum through the herculean efforts of combat service support elements, I MEF destroyed nine Iraqi Divisions. This awesome display of combat power was accomplished while simultaneously freeing the Iraqi people from more than 30 years of oppression and reestablishing basic infrastructure in the country. During the 33 days of combat, to the transition to civil-military operations, I MEF sustained a tempo of operations never before seen on the modern battlefield, conducting four major river crossings, maintaining the initiative, and sustaining forces. The ferocity and duration of the campaign was made possible through the skills and determination of the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, and Coalition Partners comprising I MEF at all levels, all echelons, and in all occupational fields. By their outstanding courage, aggressive fighting spirit, and untiring devotion to duty, the officers and enlisted personnel of I Marine Expeditionary Force (REIN) reflected great credit upon themselves and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.

I just sent in my Reserve Qualification Summary to try to get into the reserves. There’s a unit called Wounded Warrior Regiment, that I would love to be a part of. They help returning veterans transition back to civilian life by assisting with civilian training, job placement, substance abuse, etc.

The only problem is, I’m on the cusp of being too old, and well, my physical fitness isn’t what it used to be. You know what they say “Not as lean, not as mean, but still a Marine!”
