Don’t Drink the Skool-Aid

“Write letters to themselves about what they can do to help the president. These would be collected and redistributed at an appropriate later date by the teacher to make students accountable to their goals.”
-White House suggestion for post-speech activity for students.

Keep ‘em home.
That should be the motto of every conservative with children in public school on the 8th of this month. That’s the day the President will be invading every classroom that will have him with what is being billed as a general, innocuous “stay in school, do your homework” message for public school students across the country. And if there’s one thing we have all learned, it’s that we can trust the Obama administration to say what they mean and mean what they say. Right?

Why should the presidential morning announcements concern parents? Well that list is too long for a complete accounting, but let’s talk about just a few of the big reasons.

First off, Michelle Malkin walks us through the materials distributed to schools to accompany the president’s instructions address, as well as listing some of the luminaries involved in Obama’s education plans. I would excerpt, but you really want to read the whole thing. Go ahead, I’ll wait.

Over at HotAir, the normally skeptical Allahpundit is advising a wait and see attitude, suggesting there will be “ample time for outrageous outrage” later. I can think of many circumstances under which that would be sage advice, none of which involve the untrustworthy Obama administration or the well-being of my children. I’m happy, in other words, to wait and see what he says. So happy to, in fact, that I do believe I’ll wait with my kids. At home.

There is abundant reason and a yardstick-long history timeline’s worth of reasons to distrust what Obama is actually going to say to students, but that’s being ably covered by others, especially Michelle, Vodka Pundit, Dana Loesch, and Steve Foley.

Instead, I’m going to relate an anecdote.

I have two little girls. They attend a public school. Last year, we went to my oldest daughter’s classroom to see them present their “holiday” play. You don’t say “Christmas” play, see, because then you’re indoctrinating students.

So we are sitting in class, and my daughter and a few other kids, third-graders all, stand in front of the class. We parents then sat through the recitation of an excruciating litany of horrors that the world would be facing now that global-warming was here to destroy us all. Little scenes of animals dying were acted out. Prognostications about the end of man were made. Armageddon, as related by 8 and 9 year olds.

My own little girl stepped forward and told us all that in five years, if something wasn’t done, Myrtle Beach (where we share many happy family memories) would be lost under the waves forever. Guess how the play ended? With an exhortation to the parents of course. “Mom and Dad, what can you do? Turn off lights, drive hybrid vehicles, and vote for candidates who are working to change the world for the better.” A small child’s voice barely squeaked out “Obama” before the applause, and a few knowing chuckles, erupted among the yuppies, yippies, and go alongs.

Vote Democrat! …. says their teacher. This is not the first or last time overtly partisan, overtly leftist rhetoric was foisted on my children. That wasn’t even the first or last time that day. Every day they come home with something that I must debunk, refute, or dispute.

Now take another look at the lesson plan Obama is pitching.

*Create posters of their goals. Posters could be formatted in quadrants or puzzle pieces or trails marked with the labels: personal, academic, community, country. Each area could be labeled with three steps for achieving goals in those areas. It might make sense to focus on personal and academic so community and country goals come more readily.

*Write letters to themselves about what they can do to help the president. These would be collected and redistributed at an appropriate later date by the teacher to make students accountable to their goals.

*Write goals on colored index cards or precut designs to post around the classroom.

*Interview and share about their goals with one another to create a supportive community.

*Participate in School wide incentive programs or contests for students who achieve their goals.

*Write about their goals in a variety of genres, i.e. poems, songs, personal essays.

*Create artistic projects based on the themes of their goals.

*Graph student progress toward goals.

I know my girls’ school, and I can read between the lines. I don’t have to “wait and see” to understand the lesson they’re going to be teaching that day. Here’s a quick summary “it takes a village.” Not descriptive enough? How about “from each according to his abilities” … does that work?

There is a puzzle being put together before us. The pieces just keep falling into place. Day of service. Compulsory volunteerism. Children being called to service for the good of the community. Can you see the picture it’s making?

On September 8th, Barack Obama will address the children of the nation. He will ask them to help him, as well as make pat statements about staying in school and doing your homework. And before and after he speaks, the teachers will be there, making sure your children read between the lines; helping them put the puzzle together.

But not my children. My children will be at home. This is one time the machine can’t have them.

*thanks to Redstate regular speciallist for the phrase “skool-aid”

UPDATE: Ed Driscoll notes the Obama administration is already backpedaling and covering-up.

it’s fine the problem is Republicans are making to much of this. I submit to you that if President George Bush for one second thought of addressing kids in school to help him….the lefts heads would have EXPLODED. I personally wouldn’t have wanted him and nor do I want Obama or the freaking Rev Gore indoctrinating our youth while they MUST sit and participate. It is sickening and if we don’t stop this progressive push that encapsulates our beautiful children in its path we will SUFFER for too many years to think about.

I am so very disturbed by the fact that these leftists have always been there but their power had been maintained at the lower tiers of government but now they have ALL of the levers of power and I am unsure if we can stop them. It is true that elections have consequences and anyone who voted for Obama will NEVER be allowed in my presence. They have set the progressive movement ahead 20 yrs with that vote and they should hang their heads in shame. In this beautiful country where FREEDOM has reigned for over 200 years to watch it dissipate so quickly is heart-breaking.

This is the real reason dems are against vouchers. I have to pay more to send my child to a private school because my right to define my child’s education in traditional academic standars and culture is being undermined. Marxism and facism used children to reinforce it’s ideology of control through brainwashing. It’s what the homosexuality lobby is now doing with the blessings of our gov’t.

we need to work toward the abolition of the Dept. of Education and return education to the local level where it belongs. The Dept. of Ed along with the NEA are Democrat propaganda machines working hand in glove with one another

could not shut the thing down: of course, he did not have Republican Congress.

One of the reasons I have stayed in Catholic schools in my teaching career is that we have no bureaucrats – local or federal – second-guessing or dictating what needs to happen in my classroom.

Years ago, when I did teach in a public school for one year, I discovered a great truth:

Educational bureaucrats should all be fired and sent to bag groceries at Kroger’s, a job matching their intellectual talents.

I had just sent my 5th grader an e-mail saying I would prefer that my child read the Declaration of Independence in lieu of watching Obama. The school must have been swamped with complaints today. Here is what they just sent: (We are in Texas)

The US Department of Education sent a letter to all school districts on August 25 announcing a presidential address to school children on Tuesday, September 8. The topic of this public broadcast is the importance of education. To clarify questions and concerns about this presidential address, Plano ISD notes the following:

This event is not a component of the Plano ISD curriculum and is therefore not a mandatory activity.

Viewing the broadcast is not a planned classroom activity for September 8.

Like many historical events, Plano ISD will have this video available for students and teachers via the digital video library.

Found this on Drudge – shown to an elementary school in Utah. I Pledge to Obama. Starts out subtle than hits you over the head with a hammer. Most egregious – pledges from celebs at least three times to end slavery (huh?) then pledges to be a servant to the President.

Please stop calling these schools “public” schools. They are GOVERNMENT schools. We should start calling them what they truly are.

I urge you to do whatever it takes – ditch the dish, downsize your home, trade the BMW – figure out a way to get your children out of government schools. If you want to home school then do it, otherwise get them into something that is inline with your values and out of the government brainwashing program. Forget that you’re paying for school twice – we have to address that later. Now is the time to get them out. Act now – don’t wait. Your children (and your grandchildren) and the country will be better off.

    • http://theadmiralsbridge.blogspot.com/ Stephen Halsey

We did this a year ago…..cut out dining out by 75%, downsized our extras, paid off a car and just felt like we HAD to do whatever it took to get our kids out of government school and into a small parochial school nearby…..best decision we ever made. And we live in west Richmond, a pretty dang conservative area and we just had lots of issues with the way the government school system was intruding into our family business. All they did was teach the state SOLs, nothing else. Sure our kids still have standardized tests at our parochial school, but they also have religion class daily, begin each day with the Lord’s Prayer and teach the 3Rs…..

      Old.School.

And no, our school is not showing Dear Leader’s brainwash on the 8th.

    [my emphasis]

? Teachers may engage students in short readings. Teachers may post in large print around the classroom notable quotes excerpted from President Obama?s speeches on education. Teachers might ask students to think alone, compare ideas with a partner, or share their thoughts with the class. Teachers could ask students to think about the following:
What are our interpretations of these excerpts?
Based on these excerpts, what can we infer that the president believes is important in order to be educationally successful?

I really like how they get to stare at Obama quotes all around the classroom, probably the rest of the school year. Most will be voting age in 2012.

No doubt this’ll be followed by chanting “O-bam-uhh” repeatedly.

    Here’s where you can read for yourself as a .pdf download what the school day will bring;

Apparently a large slice of the population has no historical perspective, and therefore no idea where a cult of personality can lead.

In Free America, we pledge allegiance to the flag and to the republic for which it stands, not to our employee in the White House.

And the rest of those we hire to run the government swear to defend and protect the Constitution, not their Dear Leader.

    For now, anyway.

Your taxes pay into the system. You should check it out and voice your opinion. Write a letter to the editor.

And take heart, even in Massachusetts the masses are getting uneasy. A public high school assigned “Dreams of My Father” and the public is outraged. Obama Flu will be rampant on Tuesday.

Loved your take on this, Caleb. One piece of advice – get your girls out of public school! Do whatever you have to do, just do it. Politics aside, go to their future high school and watch the girls and what they wear and how they behave towards the boys. Then go find a parochial school for them. They are surprisingly affordable – with financial aid and scholarships, too.

There’s one thing we all know, the Koolaide(TM) drinkers will not waste a prime situation to proselytize anything Obama. Maybe we can use this moment to find out which of our teachers are politicizing our classrooms and shut those educators down for good.

I just think a boycott would waste a prime opportunity here. Send your kids there with portable recording devices, or the parents can request to attend as an observer to make sure there is no cheerleading for the President’s agenda.

    • Trelaina

Show up at the school and tell them if your kid will be watching it, you will be there with them. Take a seat with your kid or in the back of the room.

I’m either going to do that or watch at home, unless something changes between now and Tuesday. If it sounds like it might be more than advertised, my son will have a last-minute appointment that will require me to check him out of school early.

Then again, we live in a pretty red district. The school may not show it at all. DH will be checking on that tomorrow.

    • Jack_Savage

“I just think a boycott would waste a prime opportunity here.”

I think a boycott will send a message loudly and clearly, to Obama and all the cheerleading parents and teachers. I will be taking my girls to lunch and telling them again that, despite what they have been told, Martin Luther King Jr. did not sail over on the Mayflower, write the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, give the Gettysburg Address, fight and win both World Wars AND lead the fight for civil rights.

      • Husker

I think a boycott will send a message loudly and clearly, to Obama and all the cheerleading parents and teachers.

If you’re not there it doesn’t send any message. You’re presence in the classroom will speak volumes, otherwise this garbage will continue to go on unchallenged. Anything you deem inappropriate should be taken your local school board.

        • http://www.gopmom.com GOPMOM

And ask around if friends need their kids supervised for the day.

At our Catholic school, the principal is undecided but it is doubtful she will show it – too many angry emails. But we are “networking: to see how many kids we can keep home or pull out of class when they show it. It they do decide to show it, I’m showing up to pull my daughter and bringing pizza and ice cream with me. That ought to change the debate a bit – with the smell of pizza and vision of ice cream sundaes on the brain, how many kids will be listening to Obama?

I believe this message needs to go out loud and clear. These are our kids. We’re in this fight because of their future, aren’t we?

  • ss396

Schools generally have a policy that allows parents to visit the classrooms of their children, as long as the parent(s) keep quiet. Imagine the discomfiture of the teachers trying to carry out these obvious propaganda ploys in the (silent, accusatory) presence of adults who are not susceptible to such ridiculousness.

  • Rod_Patrick

Because Obama is backtracking from his planned Public School message on September 8?

    http://washingtontimes.com/news/2009/sep/02/wh-withdraws-call-students-help-obama/

Or: Michelle Malkin and this diary have succeeded so much in guessing the real motives of the WH since Obama’s so unsure (and afraid?) and is now backpedalling?

    I bet for the latter.

  • JadedByPolitics

He would have just gave his speech like a PSA and NO paperwork would be involved. This indoctrinator went the extra step to give the dept of Education the “tools” to indoctrinate the children and he was the one who changed the wording. He can change the wording all day long the bottom line this Won and his radical friends know that the way forward is to radicalize the children and what a better way then FORCING it in children who cannot change what they are FORCED to watch. The dept of Education did the same thing with the Rev Gore’s piece of propaganda and it wasn’t until AFTER it was shown that the level of anger rose in parents. We have them before it happens and we have effected some changes to the wording but the indoctrination goes on anyway!

Keep your children home REFUSE to participate in this POLITICAL PROPAGANDA!

  • mom2oneson

but those lesson plans are just education-ese and the fad of the day for anything they do in the classroom. It’s really dumb. If we looked at other things they teach you would see the same type of things for everything. Again I’m not defending it, I’m all for doing whatever you can to get kids out of the public schools, I’m just saying those type of activities and wording in lesson plans are a part of everything they do in the classroom.
One thing this can do highlight what kind of bad teaching methods (if you want to call it teaching) and stuff (all the focus on how kids feel vs learning academic things) they they use on the kids, not just this speech.

    • mom2oneson

Right now, I am looking into Renzulli Learning, which bills itself as a “University of Connecticut Research and Development Corporation Company”. They provide our school with what are called “Schoolwide Enrichment Modules”. These SEM’s are paid for privately by parent donations and PTA funds. Up until this year, they have been inocuous little sessions during regular classroom time about science, geography, etc. I even participated in a few as a volunteer instructor.

This year, however, there is a module which will be taught in the Spring to 3rd graders about…Global Warming. I haven’t been able to get info yet on what they plan on teaching–they’re very coy about that–but I am going to do my best to be the volunteer for at least one of my 3rd grade children. If this module turns out to be nothing but biased propaganda, I will do my best to counter it.

The cultism continues to spread, and the ego expands… Children, help the President! Help the President! The recommended pre-address work for the classroom includes “read books about the presidents or Barack Obama.” In my day, the message was about “what you ca do for your country….” not what you can do for a particular president. This is SCARY.

  • jyalai

that most conservatives are up in arms at letting their kids listen to a propaganda speech by Obama in class, but have no qualms letting their kids sit for the the next 6-7 hours for the next 180 days in a sytem that indoctrinates their kids in Marxist theology.

Get out of the public education system!

  • sharprightturn

,,and them tell me it isn’t propaganda:

Supposedly Obama?s speech is about success and academics, but?..

The supporting study documentation originally sent out to teachers contains these words followed by the number of times used in the documentation:

Success, Succeeding, Succeed ? 0 (zero)
Persist, Persisting, Persistence ? 0 (zero)
    Academic, Academics ? 0 (zero)
Education ? 2 times (plus once used in Dept of Education!)

But the following do appear, some numerous times:

President or Obama ? 18 times
Do (in the sense of ?doing? something – activism?) ? 8 times
    Community ? 3 times
    Duty ? 1 time
    Civic ? 1 time

    Score?

Community and ?duty? Propaganda/Obama personality worship ? 31
    Education and Success ? 2

They will all attend school that day.

My 17-year-old will listen and interact with the other kids. He has a lot of political savvy, and will be there to refute their standard talking points.

My 16-year-old daughter will attend school that day, but had her mother write a note to excuse her from watching the speech.

My 14-year-old goes back and forth between wanting to refuse on his own or watching and engaging his classmates afterwards.

I can certainly understand parents of younger, more impressionable children wanting to keep them home for the day.

  • hilliardohpatriot

Our school system has cancelled the speech – amid law suits being filed by parents:

As many of you may already know, President Barack Obama is broadcasting an address to students online next Tuesday, September 8, at noon. The district has attempted to take a neutral position regarding the broadcasting of the address in school by offering students the option of viewing or not.

However, since yesterday we have received significant feedback from our school community regarding the broadcast in our schools. We also have just learned that the address will be available on C-Span for recording, as well as posted on the White House Web site (www.whitehouse.gov) for viewing at any time.

Parents will now be able to access and share the broadcast with their children at their own discretion. The district will not broadcast the President?s address in the schools on Tuesday. We hope this decision will address the concerns of all our parents and prevent the disruption of our students? school day.

  • janelovesjesus

When you stay home for the day from gov’t school, the school loses $$$ which are based on headcount. So please $peak in the language they get.

Better yet … withdraw totally. Honestly, homeschooling is not as hard as you would think. Those who will tell you it is too hard are the ones who have a vested interest in maintaining the govt education monopoly.

Consider it an experiment in freedom! Bring your kids home and teach them what it means to be free. Teach them what you value (You WILL be teaching that you value T H E M enough to be home with them.)

Even if we don’t succeed in breaking the govt school stranglehold, at least you will have a few good years with your children before they are marched off to the mandatory obama-corps ‘volunteer’ camps.
