Daily Links – January 30, 2012

Today is January 30th. On this date in 1847, the city of Yerba Buena changed its name to San Francisco, stating that it was just more FAAABULOUS, then promptly banned Happy Meals. I think I speak for everyone when I say “hey, nice bridge!” Also on this date, in 1911, the first airplane rescue at sea was made by the U.S. Navy’s destroyer, “Terry”, prompting people the world over to exclaim “they have a destroyer named TERRY??!??” And finally, I’d like *pop* to take a *pop* moment to recognize “National Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day” *pop*. Now, the links!

Meet our daughter Bella | Rick Santorum
Many of you may have already seen this video, but I had not before today. It’s a beautiful story about a beautiful little girl. The Santorums chose life, and were rewarded. Prayers for her continued health after this weekend’s events.

Debbie Wasserman Schultz wants Reince Priebus to apologize | Miami Herald
Schultz, who continues to blame the tea party for the shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, accuses Priebus of “exploiting and making light of a tragedy for political purposes.” Read both links for a real head-spin. Folks, you just can’t make this stuff up.

Fast and Furious: Holder’s Perjury Defense Gets Shaky | Human Events
“But here we have emails clearly demonstrating that Holder’s aide, Monty Wilkinson, was fully aware of the Fast and Furious connection to Agent Terry’s murder on December 14, 2010 almost immediately.”

Racist Occupy Wall Street | Big Government
“Movement ‘Clearly’ Has Race Problems, Says Occupy Newark Leader”

Today’s Word of the Day comes via Wordsmith.org.
wellerism (WEL-uh-ri-zuhm): noun An expression involving a familiar proverb or quotation and its facetious sequel. It usually comprises three parts: statement, speaker, situation.
Example: “We’ll have to rehearse that,” said the undertaker as the coffin fell out of the car.

Here is what Factcheck.org has to say about the “Winning our Future” attacks on Mitt Romney:

Among the new ads is one from a pro-Gingrich super PAC that takes the personal attacks to a new level, suggesting Romney was associated personally with ?illegal activity? in a massive Medicare fraud in the 1990s. The fact is Romney was never accused of wrongdoing in that case.

The ad strains to imply falsely that Romney was guilty of criminal conduct. At one point the words ?illegal activity? appear superimposed over Romney?s face. But the truth is that Romney was never implicated in any illegal activity.

Factcheck goes on to point out that the oft-repeated claim that Romney was a manager (or CEO) of Damon is false. He was not a manager.

Bain capital bought Damon Corp in 1989 and sold it in 1993 with Romney on the helm of the corp and sitting on the board. Prior to buying Damon, Bain’s lawyers and auditors would have combed through Damon’s books and discovered inproprieties just as Corning did when they bought damon from Bain. So at the very least Romney should be seen as a weak director allowing the largest Medicare Fraud in Massachusetts history right under his nose. How would you like that person with the office of the POTUS? There are reports that Romney was directly supervising Damon the whole time Bain owns it. Believe me….The DNC will be able to find company reports and meeting minutes dating back to Romney’s tenure….yes reporters who went to Alaska to dig through trash bins looking for stuff on Palin will be working overtime on Romney as well. You can count on it that those minutes will surface in October.

And if you care to look, there are all those disturbing reports of Romney initially having no knowledge of the fraud (in which case, he is a lousy director), then flipping to say that he actually ordered company lawyers to investigate the fraud, before being contradicted by the US Attorney’s office that Corning and not Bain Capital cleared up the mess.

I’ve been doing the daily links since the first of the month, but haven’t got any way to really track effectiveness. Is anyone reading the posts/finding them useful?

Perhaps we should send her on a cruise…

I’m usually a day or two behind, but for the most part, there’s usually something in there that lightens the mood or even makes me laugh. That in itself is a valuable contribution these days considering how depressed we’ve all been at our current field of candidates, not to mention the state in which we find our country.

That’s exactly what I was going for!
