Lamar Alexander Is No Conservative Hero

Word around DC is that [mc_name name=’Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN)’ chamber=’senate’ mcid=’A000360′ ]’s staff has been making noise lately about how much better a conservative he is than, for example, someone like [mc_name name=’Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC)’ chamber=’senate’ mcid=’S001184′ ] of South Carolina.

This is interesting news, considering that the House passed a new, union-loved version of No Child Left Behind yesterday. Interesting because a certain someone is all gooey happy about that. His name rhymes with Mamar Malexmander, and he’ll be there for the Senate vote on the bill.

“Newsweek magazine calls No Child Left Behind ‘the education law everyone wants to fix,’ so it’s hard to overstate the importance of what Chairman Kline has accomplished in passing a bill to do just that. House passage of this bill is the first step, Senate passage next week will be the next step, then we can go to conference, get a bill to the president’s desk, fix the law and improve the future for 50 million children in 100,000 public schools.”

But that’s just the latest. Pitching himself as some kind of heroic conservative stalwart is quite a stretch when you examine the record.

For one thing, look at his Heritage scorecard. Not good. He has ended up to the left of [mc_name name=’Sen. John McCain (R-AZ)’ chamber=’senate’ mcid=’M000303′ ] and [mc_name name=’Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN)’ chamber=’senate’ mcid=’C001071′ ]. Funny place to be for the supposed staunch conservative. In fact, Heritage even scores him lower than [mc_name name=’Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC)’ chamber=’senate’ mcid=’G000359′ ]. Did you hear what I said? LINDSEY. GRAHAM!

Oh, and he’s behind Redstate favorite Tim Scott too. Gee what surprise!

Or how about his ACU rating? Check this out:

LAMARALEXANDERSCORE

Yep. Right behind Corker. Again. Oh and also behind John McCain. And [mc_name name=’Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC)’ chamber=’senate’ mcid=’G000359′ ]. And of course, behind those who his people have been calling less than conservative, such as Tim Scott and [mc_name name=’Sen. Rob Portman (R-OH)’ chamber=’senate’ mcid=’P000449′ ].

You can find the same pattern on Club for Growth’s scorecard too.

We can let the record speak here, and what it says is that Lamar Alexander has some kind of nerve pointing out the squishy mote in his neighbor’s eye while ignoring the dismally-rated beam in his own.

Staunch indeed.
