Happy Red State Anniversary To Me!

What happened? It doesn’t seem possible but here I am having completed 2 years at Red State. It seems I’ve achieved the near impossible!

Just to review…I came here as a Huckster during the primary season and it might surprise some of you but I was pretty confrontational and strident in my support for the Huckster in Chief.

I know…I know…It’s hard to believe I could be controversial in my approach to anything given my mild mannered approach to all things politics and my moderating attempts to never give offense which you’ve all become accustomed to from me.

I’ll add here that I supported Huckabee as the less bad of a bunch of REALLY bad choices though I defended him to the hilt as I would any candidate I believed in!

Some of you may remember the hard time I had being blammed several times but by the grace of GOD and the understanding and nurturing guidance of Adam C and a few of the moderators, I managed to survive to become the mild mannered, calm, big tent Republican who stands before you today.

In all seriousness, I’ve loved the time I’ve had here and hope it continues for many years to come. For those of you who have been on the receiving end of my barbs and rhetorical flourishes Please know none of it has ever been personal for me…I’m of the old school where two testosterone filled bulls can face off in the front parking lot and sit down for a beer together after both our noses have been bloodied. To me…such is the natural way of things and as I’ve said hundreds of times here, the back and forth between us only serves to strengthen and refine our arguments even if we never convince each other of the rightness of the other’s cause.

Finally, to those of you who have doubts about my commitment to my party, and the Conservative values it represents, please know that for all my rantings, slings and arrows aimed at “RINOs”, “Rockefeller Republicans”, “Eisenhower Republicans”, “Country Clubbers”, “Elites”, “Ivy Leaguers” and “Big Tenters”, My rantings are based on my honest beliefs that the way back for this Party is by lifting up, selling, and standing by Conservative values and Principles. It is my earnest belief that we have lost our way as a Party and lost track of what it is that has made America the Greatest nation on the face of the Earth and the “last best hope of mankind”. I love this Party and have sacrificed my time and money to her and I will continue to do so even if and long after I’m labeled a trouble maker, a problem child, a back biter, a traitor, a quasi Democrat, a KOSac, or any of the other things I’ve been labeled as.

For me, it takes all kinds to build a successful team. I’ve been accused of firing at the wrong target, sometimes justifiably so…but there is a necessity for a whistle blower to point out the enemies in our midst or the holes in our defensive lines just as there is for the front line troops, the planners, the organizers and the Generals who lead the army into battle. That seems to have become my roll, sometimes despite myself because I write when I’m ticked off and there is little that ticks me off more than my own so called leaders giving away the store!

Hope that clarifies for some of you what makes me tick!

That said, HAPPY ANNIVERSARY TO ME!!!

Here’s praying I survive another two years as a devoted Red Stater and thanks to all those who have kept me around and followed me over the last two years!

I passed 2 years here myself about a month ago.

I figured you for an old timer.

Happy RS BDay to you as well

of course I was reborn so right now my profile shows 4 months or something like that. But my real RS BC can be confirmed by looking at my other account aaronbg. Hopefully this dispute in my age won’t stop me from being president…you know the birthers are ruthless…;^)

during the conversio to RS 4.0 my account got messed up in the db and I could no longer rcv recommends on any of my diaries. Had to set up a new account…but the old one is still there and still active…I may break it out once in a while a la MBecker and the Happy Bunny™.

It’s been an eventful summer. I turned the big 5-OH as well earlier this month and just the past Saturday night my fifth grandson was born.

As for being an old-timer….I resemble that remark ;-) And thanks for the RS b-day wishes as well. If there’s one thing I’ve found out about this place, it’s that no matter how frustrated I get here I always come back. I’m just an RS crack-whore I guess…

though just barely….but Texas is a special place…let’s hope it stays special!

As one that lived in SA(local slang for San Antonio), I know that getting a job isn’t all that tough.

I’ve seen that sign in Hondo a lot of times, mostly when I lived in Uvalde. Southwest Texas is a really hot place to live.

We’ve had a grand total of 6 days last month that wasn’t in triple digits and all of them were in the upper nineties.

through in the 80% humidity off the golf and it’s hard to do anything outside!

Both have died but the squash is doing well. Oh well, nice rain out in Real and Edwards counties right now.

Anyways,I finally go a satirical piece on my satire blog:

    • Aaron Gardner

I think I saw somewhere that Neil said that was caused by your web browser…do you use IE…and if so when is the last time you cleared out the cache and cookies?

It may help with the double posting…either that or possibly a different browser.

      • Scope

for your suggestions. A week or so ago someone suggested I try Mozilla Firefox, and, I went and downloaded it. I got a message that it wasn’t compatible with my Yahoo searcher. It suggested another search engine which I had downloaded a long time ago, remember my talking hand? It gave me so much trouble I deleted it. Aaron, currently I am having to live with “dial up” (no dsl available in my rural area)and an old computer, which would be considered old by even old standards. Hopefully that can change in the not to distant future. Just yesterday I cleaned by disk, defragmented, deleted all cookies, got rid of all temp internet files, and ran a scan with my Avast Anti Virus software. I don’t know what else I can do to stop the double posting frustration for myself and everyone else here. My husband and I are looking into another house which already has Hughesnet installed. I appologize for the annoyance.

I’d have backed Thompson if he’d have half way caught on…but he didn’t.

I’m laughing at the Pyle comment…I’ve always thought he looked too much like Jim Neighbors and was surprised that comparison was never made in the primaries…LOL…had I not been in his camp I’d have been playing that up to the hilt like I did Romney looking like Mr. Fantastic…the incredible elastic stretchy guy on the fantastic 4…That one was fertile ground and the description fit Romney in so many ways it was scary…as did Huckabee’s comparison to Gomer!

      • Scope

to try to get the Republican party out of the deep doodoo it will be in. I wasn’t here during the primaries, as I was a walking talking living Fredhead. After my mourning period when he dropped out, and having only McLame, Huck, and Romney left in the VA primary, I think I could have certifiably been considered a manic depressive. My only fear now for 2010 and 2012 is that Obama and Company will make it so easy for Republicans to win in those elections, and, that we will get the same old and/or new crop of squishes.

        Sandy

        • AceInTX

then we’ll be treted to all tha cat calls that we won because we moderated not because Obama and his cronies handed it to us on a silver platter!

I’m laughing about the blamming. I can see how that could happen, but you and GC must have the record!

            Regards, penguin

          • AceInTX

But yeah…I think GCs first day encounter with the blam stick has to be an unbeatable record because the moderators don’t seem to be as quick to wield it and it’s much less likely once it’s wielded that reinstatement will be forthcoming.

I may have the record for volume…I’m not sure how many times I was blammed but it was more than three. I really don’t know how I survived aside from what Adam C told me…namely that he had gone to bat for me…which is funny since he was a McCain sycophant and I despised McCain but I respected him greatly and was sorry to see him go.

He presented reasoned arguments in favor of Huckabee and was met with reasoned arguments opposed to Huckabee. He evaluated the facts and dropped Huckabee like a hot potato.

      • Scope

I referred to the “bot war” days that someone on a recent Palin post referred to. The remark made was something about everyone being a bot for their choosen candidate in the primaries.

        • AceInTX

It generated 300+ posts and flames galore as you can imagine…LOL

        • mbecker908

The vast majority of RS posters were not ‘bots during the primaries and just because someone supported a particular candidate didn’t make them a ‘bot. ‘bots are unique in that they support a candidate out of either hero worship or a messiah complex and ignore – and are incapable of – rational argument. For current examples, see Gary, 4palin and the late Josh Painter. They are simply the most egregarious examples, there are a few more.

And note, I am NOT implying that everyone who supports Palin at this point is a ‘bot, but a big group of them are kind of like the primary supporters of Huckabee who vaporized when he finally got tossed and the supporters of RonPaul who got banned.

some 70,000 Texans fought for the Confederacy. Perhaps the best known unit was John Bell Hood’s Texas Brigade, also known as Hood’s Brigade. After Hood moved on to Division and later Army command, the unit was, IIRC, known as Terry’s Brigade or simply as the Texas Brigade. This is the unit made famous in the “Lee to the rear” incident at The Wilderness when Gen. Lee attempted to lead the CS counterattack and the men refused to go unless Lee protected himself by going to the rear.

Hood’s agression as a brigade commander caught Gen. Longstreet’s eye and Hood became one of the stars of the Army of Northern Virginia in that capacity. He did less well as a division commander and failed miserably as commander of the Army of Tennessee, the PACS’ western army defending Atlanta.

Joe Johnston understood both the military and political situation in the late summer and fall of 1864, Joe Brown, Governor Georgia did not. Johnson’s smaller CS army was playing for time and inflicting attrition on Sherman’s massive and better equipped army as they fought from ridge to ridge in northwest Georgia. Brown, concerned about the territory being ceded clamored for Johnson’s removal and replacement with someone more agressive. The PACS acceded to Brown and replaced him with Lt. Gen. John Bell Hood, who by this time had lost both an arm and a leg to wounds, had to be tied into his saddle, and was probably addicted to laudenum – an opiate pain killer common at the time.

Hood shattered his army against Sherman’s hosts and abandoned the massive Atlanta works paving the way for Sherman’s March though Georgia. When Hood was rumored to have moved the remains of his Army back northward towards Tennessee, Sheman remarked that if Hood would go that way, he would send him the rations. In the decisive battle in the West, Hill battered his army against Yankees in fieldworks and destroyed the Army of Tennessee.

The Texans serving in the Army of Northern Virginia added a verse to “The Yellow Rose of Texas” inspired by Hood’s failures in Georgia and Tennessee. As best I recall the words are:

        Now I’m going southward/
And my heart is filled with woe/
        I’m going down to Georgia/
        To be with Uncle Joe/

You may talk about your Beauregard/
        And sing of Gen’rl Lee/
But the gallant Hood of Texas/
        Played Hell in Tennessee.

but I would not say any thing about my family involvement in said war, because they were either wafflers or opportunists. I can’t remember witch. It’s a very good thing I related to many people that were not wafflers. That’s what being Southern will do to you, your family tree is spread out like kudzu.

but for Texas history, TR Ferenbach(sp?I remember when I see the title of his book, my dad has a copy). Apparently, there was a second land battle that toke place here in Texas that never got recorded. It’s earlier than the other, but i don’t have the article in front of me. I find out on when I see my dad in San Antonio on the 4th of August.

          • Achance

about The War in the West except for some of the action in Georgia where most of my family lived in Sherman’s path with their menfold all either dead or serving in Virginia. I did hear first hand my g/grandmother’s stories of when Sherman’s men came calling in late-November of ’64. My gg/grandmother, Sarah Crump Sherrod, had been widowed in July and she and the two childred along with the slave family were alone as a body of Sherman’s Army trooped by on the Old Savannah Road, tarrying long enough to plunder the Place for valuables and foodstuffs. One of the slaves, Walter, belonged to my gg/grandmother and he stayed with the family after The War until the day she died. He disappeared on the night of her death and was never heard from again.

          • Richard Mullins

but safe to say, it happened in the area around Fort Lancaster in West Texas.

          • Achance

Contemporaneously, it was officially “The War of the Rebellion.” The official US Government history and compilation of records is called, “The Official Record of the War of the Rebellion.” I usually just say The War and any Southerner knows which war I’m talking about, and Yankees don’t know or care.

          • Richard Mullins

but if you asked me who the hero of WWI was and were he buried,I could tell you. That’s only thing diffident that I know for sure.

          • AceInTX

I’m a Civil War enthusiast where I’d consider you a historian because you delve much farther into the details than I do…I remember a discussion about Gettysburg we had where you were naming the types of firearms, shot and ball that were being used by different units…I have no depth of knowledge when it comes to that kind of detail nor do I wish to have it. I tend to draw from may different eras in History as a guide for my politics so I can’t get as deep into the details as you seem to grasp handily.

all were common men, none were firebrands who joined in ’61. Only when forced by the CS Consription Act and Georgia’s draft of 4 Mar 62 did they leave hearth and home for the Provisional Army of the Confederate States. All served in the Army of Northern Virginia. One of my fraternal gg/grandfathers, Sgt. Joseph Sherrod, Co. H., 48th Georgia, was KIA at The Crater. Another, Pvt. John M. Chance, Co.?, 51st Georgia, served throughout, but there are few records and they are confusing. One maternal g/grandfather, Amos Riner, Pvt., Co. F, 48th Georgia, was wounded on the 2nd Day at Gettysburg by a .69 cal. ball in his left shoulder. He was treated in a field hospital and got to walk back to Richmond, fighting in the Battle of Manassas Gap along the way in which his brother was captured. Amos was last on the muster in December of ’64 and clearly succumbed to the situation at home, directly in Sherman’s path and stayed home rather than returning to the ranks. Officers were generally pretty gentle with men whose families were in Sherman’s path and unless they “swallowed the oath” didn’t record them as deserters. On the Riner side, 10 men of the clan “volunteered” on 4 Mar 62 and three were still alive on 27 April 65. Another maternal gg/grandfather, Pvt. Robert Curl, Co. ?, 49th Georgia, is credited by some as the sniper who killed union Gen. John Sedgewick.

I have Sgt. Sherrod’s Testament that was in his breast pocket when he was killed and is literally bloodstained. I also have many of his letters home and my sister has the quilt that had been his bedroll.

Faulkner was right; for Southerners “The past isn’t dead; it isn’t even past.”

          • Richard Mullins

Of course along the way, my family gets related to rich slave holders in Georgia(Cox). That’s what 7 generation in TN can do for you.

          • AceInTX

Of course I didn’t live then but I can identify with the Southern Cause of states rights and the war against a central government dictating to the states…but on the other hand I could see myself as being as vehemently opposed to slavery as I am now to abortion! As such…I’m sure I’d have been agitating for abolition….and have had a struggle of conscience over the southern cause of states rights!
