“Never In The Field Of Human Conflict Was So Much Owed By So Many To So Few”.

Thus spoke Winston Churchill when discussing the British refusal to bend to the will of Hitler and the vaunted and seemingly invincible Luftwaffe.

It was summer 1940. Arguably the darkest time in human history. The Nazi horde has just swept across western Europe and destroyed French and British Forces.

Divine providence has shown it’s hand in Hitler’s inexplicable hesitation ordering a pause in the assault on allied forces thus sparing a defeated British Army.

In a hastily assembled armada of British ships, yachts, fishing trawlers and anything that could float across the English Channel, 300,000 British had just been evacuated from the beaches of Dunkirk.

Hitler has ordered logistical and strategic plans for the invasion of the British homeland which would be dubbed “Operation Sea Lion”.

Phase one of the operation calls for gaining air superiority over the southeastern part of the British Isles to provide cover for an invading Hun Army! This should be a simple enough task given the Germans are believed to command the most powerful Air Force in the world of the day. The tactic of Blitzkrieg developed and employed by the Germans is a new phenomenon in a world which only a few years ago modeled it’s battle tactics around the trench warfare of WWI.

The RAF is vastly outgunned in numbers of aircraft and over matched by the battle tested experience of the German pilots who had honed their skills over battlefields in the Spain, Czechoslovakia, Poland and France.

Conventional wisdom said Great Britain is doomed. There could be no hope of victory….and fighting would continue and prolong the suffering of the British People with little hope of success.

Fighting would bring untold hardship on the United Kingdom and her people. For the first time since the days of the Spanish Armada Britain would face the hardship of an invading force upon her shores and her people would feel the privations of war on her populace. Why face the destruction of the homeland? Why not sue for peace and negotiate an armistice which would preserve the independence of the United Kingdom? All was lost anyway…who could fault the British for doing the sane and rational thing and seeking an amicable peace?

Yet such a move would allow Hitler to work his will upon the European continent. Surrender would mean an end to Hitler’s opposition in Norway, Holland, and around the Mediterranean and North Africa. Hitler would be free to turn ALL his forces on the Soviet Union and the oil rich territories of eastern Europe which would in turn fuel his military and industrial machinery. The Soviet Union would be faced not only with the military might of the NAZI horde, but with the combined industrial might of Germany and France and all the war material they could produce.

Worse Germany would have the advantage of a one front war and a near certainty of absolute victory over the Soviet Union. With an unmolested Japan making her way across the Asian Continent, the Axis Powers would control the vast expanse of Europe and Asia and all the resources the vast expanses held. What a different history than what we know would exist had Britain followed the path of practicality and done the expedient thing?

At this point. America was no help because she was still asleep and secure in her isolationism and the American Public had no interest in what was happening “over there!!” Roosevelt was interested in getting involved in the war but at that point political reality prevented him from doing anything except shipping arms to the beleaguered British.

Then….out of the darkness echoes a loan voice in the third from a series of three speeches delivered from the House of Commons by Sir Winston Churchill:

I have, myself, full confidence that if all do their duty, if nothing is neglected, and if the best arrangements are made, as they are being made, we shall prove ourselves once more able to defend our Island home, to ride out the storm of war, and to outlive the menace of tyranny, if necessary for years, if necessary alone.

Even though large parts of Europe and many old and famous States have fallen or may fall into the grip of the Gestapo and all the odious apparatus of Nazi rule, we shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender, and if, which I do not for a moment believe, this Island or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our Empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the British Fleet, would carry on the struggle, until, in God’s good time, the New World, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the Old.

Churchill went on in that speech to utter the words that would give name to the greatest endeavor upon which the British people would ever embark!

“The Battle of France is over. I expect the Battle of Britain is about to begin…”

In a nut shell…the British never surrendered. They fought on. German arrogance made them believe Germany was the only nation that had the technology to develop RADAR and they ignored the picket fence of RADAR installations along the British Coasts that gave early warning to the RAF of approaching Luftwaffe raids.

Because of the survival of these RADAR installations, the superior numbers of the Luftwaffe were nullified by Britain’s ability to identify incoming German aircraft and spring up at the last moment in targeted and pinpoint attacks that made their numbers appear to be far greater than they actually were. All Aircraft could be devoted to confronting the invaders because RADAR made patroling the British skies unnecessary allowing more aircraft to be devoted to the fight!

Britain used every subterfuge, every trick in the book they could think of to confuse the enemy and make them fear proceeding with their invasion plans. Actual airfields were camouflaged so they couldn’t be seen from the air while fake airfields were visibly mocked up in open fields so that German bombs did little more than over turn the dirt and scatter sheep dung around the fertile British soil. Holes complete with wreckage inside were painted on the roofs and doors of hangers containing British aircraft leaving German reconnaissance pilots with the impression of empty and bombed out hangers. Bomb craters were painted by artists and special affects crews onto runways so that German reconnaissance pilots would report airfields that were totally destroyed and unusable while British Spitfires were taking off from those very runways just minutes after German reconnaissance aircraft flew away filled with confidence nothing could gain the skies after such destruction! No trick was too dirty and no effort was spared to confuse and demoralize the enemy!

As a result, the Germans eventually gave up on gaining air superiority and abandoned Operation Sea Lion electing to bomb the British population in a campaign to terrorize and demoralize them into submission. America would enter the war and after driving Hitler from Africa, Britain was there to be used as a base of operations in the destruction of German industry and war production as well as a jumping off place for the invasion of Normandy.

So what’s my point in writing this? I believe the American people are facing such times.

The Democrats have taken over banks, student loans, housing and entire industries in this country and now we are faced with the single biggest power grab by the socialist party of the last century.

We have seen the equivalent of the French Surrender when Harry Ried voted Obamacare through with hardly a squeak of protest from our Vichy Republican Leadership.

Now the equivalent of the Battle of Britain has begun with the final reconciliation of the House and Senate Bills…(assuming our leadership doesn’t sue for peace and refuse to fight).

60% and more of the public are against Obamacare today and people are BEGGING for an equivalent of the RAF Fighter Command to marshal and direct our resources in a final all out fight to defeat it.

We are in desperate need of a command structure that is committed to the fight to stop Obamacare. We need a high command who is frugal and has the good sense to muster our forces and deploy them as the RAF did to multiply our effect upon the Enemy!

We need all that and more!

I ask you…Where is our Churchill? For all the talk about how badly the Democrats are doing…and for all the talk of the gains we will make in 2010, where is that loan voice crying from the darkness calling for us to fight on:

“whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender”!

Where is that voice who will inspire us to not only achieve the expected gains of 2010…but will inspire us to even greater heights than we can even imagine?

The Bible Speaks of a time when God searched throughout the land for someone who would stand up and take up the challenge:

Eze 22:30
So I sought for a man among them who would make a wall, and stand in the gap before Me on behalf of the land, that I should not destroy it; but I found no one.

Eze 22:31
Therefore I have poured out My indignation on them; I have consumed them with the fire of My wrath; and I have recompensed their deeds on their own heads,” says the Lord GOD.

Who is that Man, or Woman who will make a wall…and stand in the gap? Who will answer the call?

Let us grab onto the comments from Churchill’s Speech from October 29, 1941 to Harrow School….

Never give in. Never give in. Never, never, never, never–in nothing, great or small, large or petty–never give in, except to convictions of honor and good sense. Never yield to force. Never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy.

We stood all alone a year ago, and to many countries it seemed that our account was closed, we were finished. All this tradition of ours, our songs, our School history, this part of the history of this country, were gone and finished and liquidated.

Very different is the mood today. Britain, other nations thought, had drawn a sponge across her slate. But instead our country stood in the gap. There was no flinching and no thought of giving in; and by what seemed almost a miracle to those outside these Islands, though we ourselves never doubted it, we now find ourselves in a position where I say that we can be sure that we have only to persevere to conquer.

From here let’s all resolve to move forward in the battle of Obamacare and let us spare no effort to prevent it’s passage until we have faced our own utter destruction…or we have won the victory so we can look back and say of ourselves what Churchill said of his people that day.

Do not let us speak of darker days: let us speak rather of sterner days. These are not dark days; these are great days–the greatest days our country has ever lived; and we must all thank God that we have been allowed, each of us according to our stations, to play a part in making these days memorable in the history of our race, (nation).

This should be read by every pantywaste Republican in Congress. I read this and wondered if our education system/populist culture could produce men like Churchill or Reagan any more. We certainly know it can produce tyrants.

Yeah...but apperently noone at Red State is reading it...

Ausonius (Diary) Friday, January 8th at 12:12PM EDT (link)

It would be nice to have a counter showing how many times a diary has been read!!! Such a feature is standard on many other sites!

This would let the author know if s/he is a “vox clamans in deserto” or if in fact a good number of people are reading the diaries, which some people spend a good amount of time on.

Lack of comments can therefore be discouraging: a counter would give the author some idea of his/her readership.

And yes, McConnell needs to be horse-whipped! :)

for me it gets discouraging when you read some really well researched and written diaries,on subjects that affect all of us. Few reco’s, and few comments. Yet, put up a diary about Palin or Ron Paul, and bingo it lasts for days, and gathers hundreds of comments. I understand that we all have our own interests and tastes and ideas to offer. This is a call-to-action kind of diary, loaded with “give em hell.” It should be a great inspiration to those of us who will never, never, never give up.

Great job Ace. Also remember, fridays and weekends are slow days here at Redstate. To get more traffic, put your diaries up on Wednesdays, which is undoubtedly the busiest day on this site. That is of course if there are no Christmas midnight votes on the horizon.

I thought it excellent, and after I read it yesterday, I was thinking it is not only Winston Churchill that we need, but also our George Washington. The two men may have been able to have quite a conversation if they had met in the same century.

The problem: unless some stalwart voice stands up to the current GOP leadership, we are stuck, and down the road if we are victorious in 2010, I am afraid we will only be slowing things down, not bringing them to the crashing halt needed. The people of Great Britain, who truly owed so much to so few, including Winston Churchill, were not very grateful after the war, they voted him out, but he had stood for his nation and saved her.

The British have surrendered to Islam

izoneguy (Diary) Friday, January 8th at 12:21PM EDT (link)

And America is still alsleep at the switch. Of course the Muslims are not attacking with planes & ships (yet) so the war goes unnoticed.

All of Europe is overrun and will become under the dominate influence of Islam in a few short years. 3 Obama years to be exact. 2012 will be to late to reverse the trend. And I was so looking forward to a european vacation someday.

Islam has accomplished what Hitler could not.

Those who had once simpered: “I don’t want to destroy the rich, I only want to seize a little of their surplus to help the poor, just a little, they’ll never miss it!” – then, later, had snapped: “The tycoons can stand being squeezed; they’ve amassed enough to last them for three generations” – then, later, had yelled: “Why should the people suffer while businessmen have reserves to last a year?” – now were screaming: “Why should we starve while some people have reserves to last a week?” – Atlas Shrugged

They surrendered to socialism many decades ago, and that is part of what sapped their strength to fight against Islam. They no longer thought their own culture was worth fighting for, in fact many had been brainwashed into hating their own culture.

But the average Brit was always less interested in politics and more prone to follow the leadership of their “betters” than an American.

Your analogy with the Battle of Britain is right on target. We need to fight and stop it now or it will be too late, this is our last ditch effort.

While a strong leader will be a boon to our fight and will be necessary before any victory can be realized, I’m not too worried about not having one yet. If we fall in behind the wrong one we’re doomed to fail. Senator McConnell could have put himself into contention for that leadership position had he actually fought the healthcare bill. to use another military analogy, he could have led a real, hard fought, bloody battle against the statists and still lost, as MacArthur did on Corregidor, but instead he chose to make a half hearted attempt, make it look good and, IMO, focus on getting his paws into the tax money and power the healthcare legislation will bring who-ever is in power after its passed. Maybe this is going too far but no-one in DC has earned any trust from me lately. I’ll ascribe the same despicable, self-serving, greedy goals to everyone there until they individually prove to me that they do not deserve it.

A Leader will come, maybe someone we’re familiar with, maybe someone unforeseen and out of the blue. Lincoln went through a good number of Generals, all well known and widely believed to be brilliant, it wasn’t until late in the war he found Grant, who, by the way, was widely believed to be unimaginative, plodding, barely competent and uninspiring. WW II was no different as Marshall weeded out the old time Generals, replacing them one by one until those junior officers he had been keeping track of since their days as Captains and Majors were at the helm.

A Leader will come, one who deserves it, we’re going through our McClellans, Hookers, and Burnsides now. One who actually deserves our loyalty is out there and as long as all of us fight, individually or as “Little Groups of Conservatives” (originally LGOPs) we can hold them at bay. For a little longer…

My question isn't so much where is our Churchill...it is...where is our version of the RAF fighter command...

AceInTX (Diary) Friday, January 8th at 1:54PM EDT (link)

we need someone to marshal our forces and direct them to the heart of the enemy, We need a high command that will direct each of us manning our singular spitfires and form us into cohesive fighting units that can get to the enemies flank and turn him…who can put us in a position where we can swoop down on them with the sun at our back so that we can destroy6 them before they even know we’re there!

We need a direction…We have 60% of the public on our side on this…THIS is our moment…how often does the Republican Party have 60% of the people behind them on an issue they are trying to defeat…if we can’t stop this with 60% support…we can’t do anything and we might as well ask the enemy for their terms of surrender because we don’t deserve to win this fight!

nessa (Diary) Friday, January 8th at 2:30PM EDT (link)

the individual Tea Party Organizations, other websites, PACs, its not as large and threatening as ONE huge group, but can be just as effective. The American Army, to go back to the military analogies, has almost always used “small unit” tactics. The Civil War and WW I being two notable exceptions. Its hard to obtain mass without one higher headquarters, we still have a Division from RS, a Division from SWMNBN, and numerous brigades, battalions, companies and platoons from other places, all interfering with the rise of statism as much as possible. Occasionally we do achieve mass when two or more of these small units are directed at one target.

The 60% you speak of are against healthcare, individually. They will not unite under the current Republican Leadership, against healthcare does not equal Republican. Hell, the current Republicans are barely managing to hold onto you and me, they are incapable of inspiring converts much less leading those opposed to the statists. That higher HQs will have to wait for the Leader, our Churchill to establish it.

You know what...he's not a great example because of his later treason...but we need the Benedict Arnold of Saratoga...

AceInTX (Diary) Friday, January 8th at 2:16PM EDT (link)

We need a general from the ranks who knows the over all commander is full of crap who will defy orders and ride to the sound of the guns…

Arnold told Gates what was going on with the British and how to defeat them…he stopped the British from turning the flank of the continentals on the first day. Gates ordered Arnold to his tent for the remained of the battle after that…some say it was because of disagreements among the general staff but I believe it was Gates’ petty jealousy of of Arnolds fame and popularity that caused it.

Anyway…the next day…in the midst of the battle…Arnold defied Gate’s order and road to the crucial spot in the battle and rallied retreating continentals and won the day…

Arnold was shot in the leg which put him in NY and opened the door to the British turning him….but I digress…

We need someone like Cantor…or Demint who will ignore McConnell and take this fight to the Democrats…We need someone who will rally flagging Republicans and march them to the crucial part in the line…someone who realizes this is a battle that can be won and who has the heart and passion to do whatever it takes to win it!

We don’t need a Chruchhill right now beyond emulating his fighting Spirit…but we do need fighting Generals who will tell the Gates and the White Horse Harry Lees and the spineless losers in the high command where to get off!

I particularly liked this line from the speech to the House of Commons:

“would carry on the struggle, until, in God’s good time, the New World, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the Old.”

We, the political junky activists, the precinct captains, the talented and unpaid writers and bloggers, and campaign volunteers must carry on the struggle until the American electorate wakes up to the fascist tsunami headed for us, and brings the full power and might of the American people to the fight.

We may well lose the battle for healthcare because we have not yet found our Churchill or George Washington of the times, but I firmly believe we will gain the ultimate triumph in defending our inalienable rights to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.

Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan ‘press on’ has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.” Calvin Coolidge.

This article reminded me

hickorystick (Diary) Saturday, January 9th at 2:22AM EDT (link)

of this little devotional booklet called Our Daily Bread. It was always available in the Presbyterian Church at the top of the hill that we went to when I was young. They would have stories along the lines of a person struggling or under hardship, an enlightening incident along the way, a Bible verse, and a happy ending. At the bottom was the moral of the story and a poem.. We haven’t reached the happy ending yet, but I think the American People are having some enlightening incidents, and are reaching for the Bible again. Although these times are terrifying, I think they had become neccesary to clean out a lot of garbage that has been accumulating in the American System.. I believe the real change that needs to happen is in the American mindset, then they will make better choices in politicians. And Redstate is doing great in helping set a good choice on the Republican side.

Simply awesome, Ace. Work's kept me from being on

here the last couple of days but this is simply inspiring. As the wave of tyrannical new continues to wash over me: Section 3403 of the Health Bill; the INTERPOL Executive Order; the smarmy, backroom deals of the healthcare conference; Universal Voter Registration, it becomes almost depressing at times to get up in the morning and feel like all has been lost.

Thanks for reminding me that as dark as the night is, freedom and its defenders have seen even darker times and emerged into the bright dawn of victory.

Thanks for inspiring me on this Saturday morning….

you purist you! :-)

Well Eburke- You can rest easy about INTERPOL

according to Chas. Krauthammer, last night on the panel, he said it is nothing to worry about. I believe he said it is “benign.” It’s like any other international organization such as the World Bank and the Red Cross etc. He said they don’t have any more authority here than other countries ambassadors.

I used to have tremendous respect for what Krauthammer had to say. When he disappoints, he disappoints big. If you consider that he is a globalist, then you understand where he is coming from.

PS- For a minute I thought it was Juan Williams talking

Whew! Thanks for calming my fears, Scope.

Glad Charles took care of that paranoia of mine. There for a while I thought that an Executive Order that gave an international police and investigatory agency unbridled, unchecked, unaccountable authority in our sovereign country was something to be concerned about.

That's why I wrote this...I had hit the pits of dispare Xmas Eve because of the vote

mixed into some personal and family issues…my response was to post a video clip from Star Wars when Padme, (spelling?) makes the comment as the Sith Lord is declaring the birth of a new Empire “so this is how democracy dies. To thunderous applause!”

Then I looked around over the last week…and I thought, “What the hell are you talking about Ace, your not dead yet and there is a fight to be made. Maybe you’ll die or be destroyed in the effort…but no victory has ever been achieved without the victor first engaging in the fight!”

It’s time to fight like this is the end…and there is no hope but victory. The Spanish burning their ships to impress upon their troops that there was no other choice but victory in central America comes to mind…there is no other way off this beach but through the Enemy so it’s time to fight like our very survival depends on our winning…because it does!

for reminding us to have that fighting spirit.

Sometimes a leader stands up and gathers his troups around him. Other times people band together to fight oppression and a person comes around to take the lead. Right now we are banding together and looking for that person. As long as we keep fighting and don’t give up, that person will come along.

Outstanding diary...

I’m sure that leader(s) is out there and that God will bring him forth at the right time – though I wish that time was right now….

Sorry to take so long to see it.

Tomorrow we have our Tampa Tea Party meeting followed by first RPOF candidate scrub after announcement of Greer being thown out.
I had planned on only speaking out a little. I will be speaking out a lot.

Also just sent more donations for Scott, Rubio, and Devore.

I’ve got more to write on this, but going to start making phone calls rather than do the writing now.

One thing that I do see that can help immediatley assist in “prepping the battlefield” for leaders and leadership to emerge, is to challenge and attack all forms of political correctness in everything and everyone around me. I’ll assert that it is that PC (actually crafted socialistic doctrine) slowly propogated and injected, by the Dems, starting with Clinton and before, that has greatly qwelled leadership from coming forward…in both Congress and the Military.

Great leaders can come forward no matter what though….and I am a stand that they will and that I will empower that as much as possible in myself and those around me.

Again great job Ace.

nice job

I just finished reading Churchill’s abridged History of the Second World War, only 1023 pages..

you did make a few errors though- there was no Luftwaffe combat experience over the Sudetenland, in 1938-39 the Germans were allowed free entry and there was no combat and there was no air sorties either. You should use the Civil War in Spain, Holland, Norway as examples instead all taking place before August 1940.

Also, I simply disagree with those on Redstate who see our own leadership as at fault here. McCain for all of us his faults has made many great speeches in the last few weeks condeming the libs. So has Cantor, so has Demint, so has Palin. What is a 40% minority supposed to do with the lamestream media being made up of leftists?!!

To get 215 Republicans to all vote no on an important issue is in itself a victory..

If you care about the country, elect the GOP in 2010

I'll make that change on the Sudetenland...the Germans jsut walked in unopposed...as for McCain...he's only now hitting his campaign stride for the 2008 elections...

I mean…he should have been saying then what he’s saying now…instead he was out on the stump telling everyone what I fine president Obama would be…

I’m thinking he knows something he’s not saying about his Senate seat this year….because he’s running ads and sounding positively Reaganesqu after spending the last 12 years trying to act like FDR
