So…Here we are…after years of being beaten about the head about fighting for your preferred Republican in the primaries and rallying to the nominee in the General Elections…Michael Steele our so called “spokesman” for the party, when given an opportunity to speak to first principles; throws Rand Paul under the bus on Fox News Sunday.
Steele: Rand Paul philosophy on discrimination ‘misplaced at these times’
“I think his philosophy is misplaced in these times,”
Way to circle the wagons there Michael! Why didn’t you just say, “We nominated a man who wears a white hood and roasts Hot Dogs and marshmallows on the local black folk’s lawn?”
Oh wait…maybe you did say that?
With spokesmen like this we don’t need the Democrats to beat our candidates in November.
“But Ace, What should Steele have said?”
Well folks, let me tell you…Steele is in a better positioned to explain the Conservative/Libertarian view on this than any spokesman we’ve ever had heading the RNC.
In fact, one of the best arguments for his taking over as Chairman was that he could speak to these issues in a way the party had never been able to do before. I opposed him at the time because I knew him to be a big tent, finger to the wind, day what the MSM expects you to say kind of weasel and believed deep down he’d never do so….but it was a good case in his favor!
I favored Ken Blackwell for this reason among many others. I knew Steele’s history of back sliding and pandering on every issue out there but when he won the chairmanship I’m on record saying we need to, “Give the guy a chance”…well…NO MORE!
Were his first instinct not to pander to the race baiters and and the conservative hating MSM he could have calmed the firestorm surrounding the Republican Senate candidate by saying something along the lines:
You know Chris, there have been a lot of attacks and mis-characterizations of what Rand Paul has said on this subject and I’d like to clear up the record on this.
Everyone want’s to make this a black or white issue when it’s anything but. There has always been a tension between the use of Federal Power for the purposes of ending what everyone agrees are the injustices of Segregation and Jim Crow and maintaining the maximum amount of liberty possible for individuals and private property owners.
What Rand is saying is basically this, I support the goals of the civil rights act of 1964, but I have a problem with some of the ways it’s been implemented.
There is no denying it’s enactment has had many unintended consequences such as Title IX, which has had a negative impact on College athletics programs. There have been many instances where Colleges have had to eliminate whole departments dedicated to male dominated sports in order to maintain a balance between programs for men and women because there weren’t enough women wishing to compete.
Maybe I wouldn’t have said things the way Rand said them, and let’s not pretend any who are fanning the flames of this controversy have charitable feelings toward Rand either. Let’s just say, I know what Rand was trying to say, and I agree with much of it.
The tension between maintaining Liberty and ending discrimination is there!
The Civil, Rights act did many good things…but it has also done some bad things in the process and I don’t see why this can’t be discussed in an open and honest way so some of the unintended consequences can be fixed without the person saying so being burned at the stake as a Heretic!
Instead what we get is a chilling effect in the debate because to even broach the subject brings out the most despicable accusations of bigotry and hatred against the person mentioning it making true and honest debate among people with the best of intentions impossible,
Instead we get the Chairman of the Republican Freaking Party throwing gasoline on the fire and fanning the flames against the Republican Nominee for Senate in KY
“I think his philosophy is misplaced in these times,” said Steele, the highest-ranking African American in the GOP. “I don’t think it’s where the country is right now. The country litigated the issue of ‘separate but equal,’ the country litigated the rights of minority people in this country to access the free enterprise system in accommodations and all of that. That was crystallized in the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act of ’64.”
“In this case, Rand Paul’s philosophy got in the way of reality, and the reality of it is that was important legislation at the time, put in place important benchmarks for the progress of free people,” Steele added. “I think, as [Paul] said, he stands four-square with the party on this issue, but he had a philosophical difference with the party.”
And then there’s this from ABC’s “This Week,
Any attempt to look backwards are not in the best interests of the country and certainly not in the best interests of the party…
“I can’t condemn a person’s view,” Steele said. “That’s like you believe something and I’m going say, ‘I’m gonna condemn your view of it.’ The people of Kentucky will judge whether or not that’s a view they would like to send to the Senate… I’m not comfortable with a lot of things. But it doesn’t matter what I’m comfortable with. I don’t vote in that election. The people of Kentucky will.”
so…all you Racists in KY should go out and vote for Rand Paul…but don’t expect Michael Steele or the RNC to lift a finger to help because they and Mitch McConnell agree with the MSM…and besides…You should have all voted for Trey Grayson like you were ordered to do…
BUT NOOO!!!…
YOU had to pick your own candidate….and they’re going to aid and abet the character assassination the ObamaDems and the so called “Objective Media” are engaged in! They have no reason to support the guy all you bigoted conservatives forced on them and THEY’RE going to take THEIR ball and go home!
Go team!!

He was pandering to old world Kentucky racists plain and simple. It hurts the Party, it helps Paul, a familiar tune from that family. To top it off, he hid it behind libertarianism. Not fair to Libertarians (though I’m not one).
Steele handled it incredibly well. He was far more tactful than I would have been.
I can't argue with you there...it was a can of worms best left unopened...
AceInTX (Diary) Monday, May 24th at 12:18AM EDT (link)but it was opened…and Paul has tried to walk it back….
I’ll not justify it…or make excuses for Paul…he screwed up…but that’s not the issue…
How the Chairman of the RNC deals with the firestorm matters. As I pointed out above…Steele could have used this to calm things down…and even score some points in the process because there are some issues that could use some dealing with…and he COULD speak to them with some authority….but instead he has stoked the fire and thrown Paul to the wolves…
and the result will be a Dem pick up of a reliable Republican seat in KY because Mitch forced Bunning out and tried to install a lackey…and finally because the Chairman of the RNC doesn’t have the guts to defend the nominee and instead decided to make him a sacrificial lamb to the great god of race baiting!
OK, close enough
hickorystick (Diary) Monday, May 24th at 12:51AM EDT (link)It was Pauls screw up, not Steeles. Hypothetically if I were chairman, I would not want to have to go anywhere near there. Steele is making a big effort to make minorities feel more comfortable with the Republican Party. This incident didn’t help. Many on the site don’t care for Steele’s style or direction. Race is probably a pretty uncomfortable subject in the South. I’m not from their so I just have to weigh what I hear. Where I’m from you can talk about it when it comes up. I think Michael is just trying to show that he is interested in specific issues that come up in community xyz. And trust me, there are ways of funneling money to certain communities of preferred citizens that nobody notices. Race based welfare is dwarfed by corporate welfare.
For example the Port of Seattle overpaying by ten million dollars for a retaining wall to a group that formed as TTI. Turns out it is shorthand for The Three Italians. Well established utility contractors in the city. A real ‘family’ business too.
Not so fast....please don't put words in my mouth...
AceInTX (Diary) Monday, May 24th at 8:43PM EDT (link)I’ve conceded it was a can of worms best left unopened…but that’s all…Steele threw him under the bus and reverted to form…saying and doing what Micheal Steele thinks is best for Michael Steele.
And I definitely won’t back away from what I said about the well being poisoned on Race in this country because it’s impossible to have a frank, open and honest discussion on the subject without having the epithet of racism thrown at you and without being burned at the stake as a heretic.
Steele is uniquely positioned to break the ice on some of this…and it’s his freaking job to support the Nominee….instead…he piled on and dumped a heaping, steaming pile of turds on Paul and the people who voted for him.
He’s the posted boy for what’s wrong with this party…he’s not only the guy who can’t shoot straight…hes part of a party hierarchy that can’t shoot at all! (more on that if I can find the time to write the diary I have in mind).
That's not fair
aesthete (Diary) Monday, May 24th at 2:31PM EDT (link)“He was pandering to old world Kentucky racists plain and simple.”
The question was brought up by someone; Paul himself didn’t bring up the subject in any way in his campaign. Even a utilitarian analysis would tell you that pandering to racists would lose you more votes from non-racists than it would gain from non-racists. It was pretty tactless for Paul to give a meandering response to the question, but I don’t think that the “pandering to racists” view holds any water when you consider that the losses outweigh potential gains, and when you consider that it was a direct and pointed question from a reporter which prompted the statement, and that Paul had talked about no such thing in the campaign. If he was pandering to racists, he did a bad job at it: he said that he fully supported 9 of the 10 titles in the Civil Rights Act and that he would have still voted for it, warts and all.

I believe that Rand Paul
Scope (Diary) Sunday, May 23rd at 8:27PM EDT (link)was speaking his libertarian view of freedom and liberty for everyone. When he said that businesses should be allowed to serve anyone they wish to, he didn’t say that only whites should be allowed to serve only those they wish, he said that every race should be allowed to serve who they wish, no matter the color of the business owner, or the color of those he serves. There was no way he was being prejudice to any race. The same applies to gays, religions or everything else under the sun. But, his statements were easy to misconstrue, and misstate. When many have to come out and try to explain what you really said, it should not have been said, in the way it was said. Hopefully he will learn from that. I am not a Paul supporter, and I have said that, but, since he is the candidate, I would support him over any D candidate.
Many, many are saying that this was a “rookie” mistake. I will also point out Achance’s position, go where you know your best support and audience will be. I am sorry to see that he even accepted a slot on David Liberal Gregory’s Meet the Depressed show. I am not sorry he canceled. He is currently in a position where Palin was with Couric and Gibson. Hopefully he has learned that terrible lesson. He may very well have had the right position on the Civil Rights Act, but, he needs to learn how to deflect those questions from the media. Today Wallace asked Ginny Thomas if she supported Kagan, she said she didn’t have any position on her, but thank you for asking the question. I know it’s different for a candidate, but the deflection rule/law should be well observed.
I think Steele is in the race baiting business, particularly with his visit to Al Sharpton’s group. He’s made many faux paus, including saying that he understand’s how Obama feels as a black man, or some similar statement. I personally believe that Steele got the nod because of his race. He got the nod because of his past win in Maryland, he was “electable” and to some, only the win makes the man, plus backroom dealing. I hate the politics of supporting only those that can “win”, it sucks. As proven, a year ago Rubio couldn’t “win.” The Republican party wouldn’t be in the leadership vacuum it is in if the backroom deals weren’t made, and Ken Blackwell was elected. Not because he was a black man, but, because he had the best laid out plan/strategy for the Republicans. I couldn’t even imagine where we would be at this point had the people, rather than the dealmakers made the choice for our RNC head. Steele totally embarasses me, just as our current Citizen of the World, Wannabe Dictator does.
I not a fanatical supporte of Rand Paul...but what's being done to him is WRONG...and the head of the RNC shouldn't be piling on
AceInTX (Diary) Sunday, May 23rd at 11:35PM EDT (link)Especially after we’ve all been pummeled about back the nominee no matter what for so long…

When all else fails, read the directions: The RNC Rules, Steele, and ColdWarrior
ColdWarrior (Diary) Monday, May 24th at 1:56AM EDT (link)Maybe I should have titled this comment “RNC Chairman Coldwarrior.”
Or, maybe, RNC Chairman [fill in your name].
Regardless, here are the big questions.
Are you qualified to cast a vote for who becomes the next RNC Chairman? Have you read “the directions?” The RNC Rules? Your state Republican Party rules/bylaws? Think of what our forbears went through to secure our liberties. The Revolution. The Civil War. WW I. WW II. Etc. Have you even read the RNC Rules? It’s not like they’re hard to find. We have the internet.
“When all else fails, read the directions.”
(I wanted to make this a Diary, but a glitch in the Redstate software prevents my Diaries from having a Recommend button. I assume it is a glitch. Maybe a conspiracy. No matter. Until the glitch is fixed/the conspiracy exposed, I’ll post the info here as a comment in hopes that, maybe, if you find this information worthy, you will promote it.)
Wanna have a vote on who takes Michael Steele’s spot? Then you have to become – you guessed it – a precinct committeeman — at least in AZ
Do you want to replace Michael Steele at the next regularly scheduled vote for the RNC chair? Want to have a vote in that process? Then you’ve got to become a precinct committeemen in your state.
“When all else fails, read the directions.”
Let’s start with the Rules of the Republican National Committee. Ever read them? I thought so.
Per Rule 1 (a), the members of the RNC consist of the national committeemen and committeewomen, one of each from each state Republican Party, and the chair of the state Republican Party of each state.
Who is eligible to be a member of the RNC? For that we must look at Rule 5 (a) (1): “A chairman and a co-chairman of the opposite sex . . . shall be elected by the members of the Republican National Committee.” So, if ya wanna vote to replace Michael Steele, you have to become a member of the RNC. (It gets better — bear with me.)
How does one become a member of the RNC? Well, as already explained, you have to either be the chair of a state Republican Party or one of the national committeemen or committeewomen. You have to look at Rule 2, which basically says each state Republican Party can set its own rules for electing the national committeeman and committeewoman and if they don’t have such rules, other rules kick in. And, as already explained, the state Republican Party chairman of each state automatically serves as a member of the RNC.
“When all else fails, read the directions.”
Gee, wouldn’t it be great if the RNC explained all this? You know, sort of a “how to become a precinct committeeman and why that’s important and how it can actually have an impact on who gets elected to the leadership positions within the Republican Party” online guide? I’ve looked for one on the net. Can’t find one. Can’t even find a layman’s explanation of all this on the www.gop.com site.
But I don’t blame THEM. The “powers that be” are protecting their political turf. I’m nothing special. I’m no rocket scientist. If I can figure out how to access this information, anyone can.
I blame YOU. Every conservative who claims to be a “political activist” who’s never even read the bylaws or rules of their county or state Republican Party committees.
I live in Arizona. Where do I go to find out the eligibility criteria for becoming either the Arizona Republican Party chairman or a national committeeman?
Hmmm.
Maybe the bylaws of the Arizona Republican Party would be a good place to look. I looked
Those bylaws tell me that if I want to get elected chair of the Arizona Republican Party, or as the national committeeman, so I can be a member of the RNC, I first have to be an elected precinct committeeman and then get elected to be a state committeeman.
If I’ve managed to be elected the chairman of a Republican county committee, then I’m automatically a state committee member. Otherwise, each county committee is allotted one state committeeman position for every three elected precinct committeemen.
So, I’m going to have to make sure I get elected to serve as a state committeeman so I can attend the annual state meeting at which the state chairman is elected. That election takes place every two years after the even-number year general elections. If I can manage to get elected as a state committeeman, then I’ll be in a position to run for Arizona Republican Party chairman at that meeting, assuming I can manage to get a majority of state committeemen to vote for me.
“When all else fails, read the directions.”
Elections of the national committeeman and woman take place when the Arizona Republican Party holds its state convention, which takes place when the national committee issues the call for a national convention. Then the Arizona state chairman issues a “call” for a state convention to be published as provided by the rules adopted by the national committee and the Arizona state bylaws. Precinct committeemen, and only precinct committeemen, elect the delegates to the convention, and only precinct committeemen are eligible to be elected as delegates. Those delegates, at the convention, elect the national committeeman and committeewoman.
So, assuming I can get myself elected state chairman, or elected as a delegate to the next state convention, I’ll be in a position to be the next RNC chairman. Because I’ll be in a position to attend the RNC meeting at which the RNC members elect the next RNC chairman. And that meeting, per RNC Rule 5 (b), takes place in January of each odd-numbered year. Which means Michael Steele’s position as RNC Chairman will be up for “change we can believe in.” But it is too late for me to become the Arizona national committeeman, as that election won’t happen again until the next Arizona convention. So I’ll have to focus on becoming Arizona Republican Chairman.
Did you know any of this?
“When all else fails, read the directions.”
Now here’s the really good part. Did you know that you DON’T have to be a member of the RNC to be elected the RNC chair or co-chair? Yep, Rule 5 (a) (1) also states, “The chairman or co-chairman need not be a member of the Republican National Committee.” In other words, ANYBODY can be elected RNC chairman or co-chairman. I guess I like that flexibility. In case I can’t make it to Arizona Republican Party chairman, I can still throw my hat in the ring!
Hmmmm. Maybe I should.
RNC Chairman ColdWarrior. I like the sound of that. But, it does not matter if it’s me. What matters is that it’s a real conservative. And for that to happen, real conservatives need to gain a majority within the RNC committee.
Which begs the question: What are YOU going to do about it?
For Liberty,
ColdWarrior, PC (that’s “precinct committeeman,” not “political child!”)

constitutionalconservative (Diary) Monday, May 24th at 2:26AM EDT (link)An excellent diary all-around. Of all of the people who should have been able to defend Rand Paul from the charge of racism , Michael Steele should have been at the top of the list.
Of all people who should have been able to issue a defense of freedom and call the left and MSM out on their ridiculous race-baiting, Michael Steele should have been at the top of the list.
Instead, he threw our nominee under the bus for defending the principles of Goldwater, Buckley and Reagan.
That’s why, when I think about the things that need to change in our party, giving Michael Steele the boot is at the top of the list.
I agree completely
SirGladiator (Diary) Monday, May 24th at 9:00AM EDT (link)I agree completely with the Diarist, Steele is sounding like a liberal democrat with some of his bizarre statements about Rand Paul. I suspect it won’t really hurt Rand though, because its his true Conservatism and opposition from the GOP establishment that has given him his 25 point lead in the first place. So if the establishment continues to stab him in the back, I don’t really think it will matter because the People are the ones who support him, because he stands for what they believe in, lower taxes, less spending, smaller government, more freedom. Its that simple.

NightTwister (Diary) Tuesday, May 25th at 2:47PM EDT (link)Even if you want to agree with what he said (which I don’t), his timing was horrible. I mean, this is what you say right out of the gate? Instead of talking about the issues that are important to Americans (National Security and the Economy), his whole campaign will be shadowed by this issue.
Steele had to do some damage control. I’m not thrilled with the words in his response, but I haven’t been thrilled with Steele since he took over leadership of the GOP.

dumb for a different reason than yours
pilgrim (Diary) Tuesday, May 25th at 3:08PM EDT (link)This whole thing about the 1965 Civil Rights Act started long before the primary in Kentucky with a “chat” Rand Paul was having with a reporter for the Louisville Courier Journal. The reason IMO Rand Paul was dumb is that he thought he could have an esoteric conversation with a reporter, and the reporter would not try to burn him.. This was not about Rand Paul wanting to be saying right out of the gate from his primary win stuff about the Civil Rights Act. This was all about Rand Paul not realizing he can not talk off the record with a reporter EVER.
Amateur hour continues.
NightTwister (Diary) Tuesday, May 25th at 4:11PM EDT (link)Either he, or his handlers should have prevented this. That’s my point.

He had no choice as he was asked a question about an issue
Mike gamecock DeVine (Diary) Tuesday, May 25th at 5:51PM EDT (link)on which he had made previous statements. Yes, he could have prepared a better answer, or prepared an answer! But in the end, I think part of his appeal is his candor and non-politician image.

He's going to have to learn to fake candor ...
acat (Diary) Tuesday, May 25th at 6:07PM EDT (link)or he’s going to have to get better handlers.
I think better handlers may be easier.

Rand Paul's new staff...

Hot Air (among many others) say Rand is shuffling the staff… as expected.
Hopefully, the new handlers will do a better job than the last batch.

Look...all of this is true...
AceInTX (Diary) Tuesday, May 25th at 9:46PM EDT (link)1) Paul could have been smarter
2)Paul was set up by various reporters
3)Paul could have had a pat answer and acted like a typical politician and devised a pandering, mealy mouthed answer pandered
4) Paul was being candid, dumb, and nieve all at the same time
but most important
5) it’s all beside the point.
My issue is with Steele, McConnell and the rest of the Republican establishment slinking under the table with their tails between their legs and dribbling pools of incontinence all the way like a bunch of whipped and abused curs who insist on licking the hand that constantly bats them across the room in disdain and contempt.
This isn’t a new game…the Dems have played at this for 50 years and for the life of me I can’t figure out why we can’t come up with a fighting answer to this.
I’m sick of seeing Republicans eating their own every time some Democrat decides to point a finger and shriek racism like the loathsome creatures in Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
I will say this again…We’ve just spent the last four years being beaten about the head about backing the party nominee in the general no matter what by the very people who have just tossed the nominee for Senate in KY on the bonfire and began fanning the flames right along side the Dems who are out to destroy that nominee…
Once again we see a moderate establishment leadership who when given the opportunity to put their money where their mouth is totally put the lie to all their high minded preaching and nagging at conservatives about party loyalty and backing the nominee…
I’m ready to make a prediction….I pray I’m wrong…but here’s how this is going to go:
The Dems and the Press are going to destroy Rand Paul with the drips of negatives like the dripping of water in Chinese water torture.
There will be story after story…every left wing reporter the so called objective press can muster will lay landmine after landmine in his path inviting him to speak what he believes and wait with baited breath to pounce on any statement that can be twisted to show him and the tea party movement who nominated him as knuckle dragging, ignorant hayseeds and racists of the first order…
But that won’t be the worse of it…as this is being done…Neither Steele, nor Cornyn, nor any other Republican of prominence will lift a finger to defend the man and call them on their game.
Worse…you’ll have the vermin from the RMSP yapping and yammering away about the Republican Party becoming a regional party ruled by southern rednecks and the dreadful CHRISSSSTIANS….What are we going to do about those CHRISSSSSSTIANS? Read Hickorystick above.
Mark it….I said it…. I’ll be stunned if we don’t see a Dem pickup in KY in November…as a result of all the above…and it won’t be Rand Paul or the Tea Party who will be to blame….but we’ll all be blamed none the less….The Party Bosses are out to teach us a lesson…we should have voted for Tray Grayson like good land loyal soldiers because they know better than the rest of us rubes and hicks.
