Tin Ears And Earmarks. So McConnell Listened To The People? Think Again! ***AN UPDATE***

****UPDATE***

By now, everyone has heard that Mitch McConnell has supposedly heeded the voice of the people and decided to champion the cause of earmark reform.

According to The Weekly Standard Online, Some time around 2:18 pm Mitch McConnell went to the well of the Senate and made the following statement:

…..Nearly every day that the Senate’s been in session for the past two years, I have come down to this spot and said that Democrats are ignoring the wishes of the American people. When it comes to earmarks, I won’t be guilty of the same thing.

Make no mistake. I know the good that has come from the projects I have helped support throughout my state. I don’t apologize for them. But there is simply no doubt that the abuse of this practice has caused Americans to view it as a symbol of the waste and the out-of-control spending that every Republican in Washington is determined to fight. And unless people like me show the American people that we’re willing to follow through on small or even symbolic things, we risk losing them on our broader efforts to cut spending and rein in government.

That’s why today I am announcing that I will join the Republican Leadership in the House in support of a moratorium on earmarks in the 112th Congress.

You would think…with such high minded rhetoric referencing the historic significance of the recent elections in the rest of his speech that Mitch FINALLY gets it….

Well…you would be wrong!!!

You see…there is another article at “The Weekly Standard” that was published just 20 minutes before Mitch made his stirring speech….DeMint Thinks Earmark Opponents Have the Votes

You see…Mitch didn’t suddenly see the light….he wasn’t heeding the will of “We the People” when he made his decision to back the ban on earmarks…He didn’t cave to pressure from phone calls of angry constituents or anything else….you see…it’s really just as simple as the fact that HE LOST! He hung on till the bitter end….Bitterly clinging to his earmarks!

The die was cast…so…he could go down with the ship…or he could jump onto the life boat just as the last square inch of the ship disappeared beneath the waves…In short Mitch was the last man off the good ship “Earmark”

But wait…there was one who went down with the ship isn’t there?

Poor James Inhofe wrote his thoughts down for all of us to reference at NRO Online….You can find the link in my diary below…

So…when you pass by Inhofe as he’s twisting in the wind…be sure to pat him on that back…and console him for being the last man standing while Mitch sailed away smiling into the sunset!

OH HOW I LOATH HYPOCRITES. And McConnell is the very definition of the term. The fact that he’s still the minority leader is an affront to the party and those who support her!

Tin Ears And Earmarks. So What’s A Conservative Tea Partier To Do?

So, here we are…less than two weeks after the Republicans have been given a new chance to show they can govern by the will of the electorate….less than two weeks after the Tea Party swept them into office in a tidal wave of anger in numbers not seen since 1946!

A wave propelled by the battle cries of, “Stop the irresponsible spending,” and “End the corrupting influence of Earmarks.”

This is a time when I had planned on taking the precious little time I have to write diaries and rub Obama’s nose in the mess he’s made on the nation’s floor and swat him on the nose with the proverbial news paper by reminding him of his comments to John McCain during the so called health care summit…

you remember…This was when Obama Arrogantly told John McCain…

“Let me make this point….ahhh John….Because we’re not campaigning any more….The election’s over!”

Or when he arrogantly marched the Republican leadership up to the White House after the 2008 elections and informed them that things were going to be his way or the highway because “WE WON!”

I had envisioned torturing the Democrats as a mischievous and malicious little boy does a fly picking off each leg one by one…picking off it’s wings…and then giving it the final coup de gras by burning it to death with a magnifying glass.

So here I am…dying to dance with glee on the graves of so many lame duck Democrat’s dead and rotting political corpses…But it appears the digs at the Dummycrat’s expense above will have to do because I’m being forced to point out the obvious to a thick headed RINO leadership that they are on probation!

I realized it was not meant to be as I read NRO Online Friday and was treated to this little gem from Senator Inhofe: Eliminating Earmarks is a Phony Issue

Of course, we all Know , thanks to Erick Erickson, “CALL YOUR REPUBLICAN SENATOR NOW: Support Senator Jim DeMint’s Earmark Ban, That Mitch MCConnell has decided to tilt at the anti earmark windmill as well.

But Inhofe? So Public in his arrogance no less!

Come on…The article isn’t even all that well reasoned…

I mean…seriously!…Armor for the troops and the C17 depend on earmarks? Seriously? As if these spending measures wouldn’t pass on their own merits?

The only argument I hear from Inhofe or McConnell that makes any sense…and has any merit at all is that…by not distributing these funds by larding up every bill that passes through Congress is that the Obama Administration would then get to spend it the way it wants to…

Which is absurd on it’s face since the Congress could simply take back the discretionary spending these earmarks represent by un-appropriating it, (is that a word?) using the power of the purse given to it by the Constitution…or it could hold down the debt limit which would stop the government from borrowing those funds in the first place since it doesn’t have them to spend to begin with.

I can only sit back in breathless wonder at this point and congratulate Senator Inhofe in his promotion to the number 2 position on the “To Primary” list for 2014…just after Lindsey Graham!

Lest we forget…it was only four short years ago that the Republican House and Senate majorities were swept away by the Democrats….and unless my memory fails me…The primary rallying cry then was: (Aside from the “Bush is EEEEVILLLL, Cheney…Enron…Haliburton, Bush is EEEEVILLLL” chant), “Culture Of Corruption” and “We must end the influence Jack Abramoff and K Street lobbyists by doing away with the corrupting influence of EARMARKS!!!!!

And now the old Bulls and the RINO establishment as epitomized by Mitch McConnell and James Inhofe are going to spit in the eyes of the people they are going to need 2 years from now to take back the Senate and sacrifice the freshmen Senators sent up there this year on the alter of the great god of EARMARKS!!!!!

What arrogance…What unmitigated gall!

And even more galling…is the dishonesty of those who voted in the past when there was no chance of it passing….to show us how they are against the practice…(Mitch McConnell anyone?)…now that it would pass with their votes….these LIARS are actively campaigning against banning them…and singing the praises of the earmarking process as if it were virtuous and praise worthy by pointing to the founders who used the practice…Can you tell me Senator Inhofe…how many times did the founders attach 4000 earmarks to a single omnibus budget bill?

And what of the great anti earmarking crusader we were all told simply had to be the standard bearer in 2008 because he hated earmarks and had never voted for a single earmark in all his Senate career…surely that paragon of virtue and honor, John Sydney McCain is going to vote for the earmarking ban on Tuesday…isn’t he? I mean…he’s a pillar of honesty and integrity and simply HATES the corrupting influence of money in politics and the earmarking process…he’s campaigning for the ban right? He’s standing shoulder to shoulder with Jim Demint and all those new tea party freshmen hitting The Hill fresh off the campaign trail…right?

You’d think so wouldn’t you? but he’s not…he’s on the sidelines…and is listed as undecided in the list of Senators I will present in a second. What a hypocrite. What a lying, sniveling blowhard!

Tuesday is when this is all supposed to be decided…and I’m begging all who read this to take the names I am providing and contact every single one of these Senators….Thank the ones who are standing with Demint…Curse the ground of every one of them who has come out against him and this ban…and above all…twist the arms of the cowering yellow curs who won’t commit to banning earmarks going forward at the end of the list.

I dont get off on attacking them. I’ve worked very hard in the last six months to affect change in the GOP.

The truth is that the current GOP Senate ARE, and HAVE BEEN, that pitiful and that out of touch. That includes their earmark defense spending bogus rationale. It is BS.

You can be sure that Obama is jumping for joy though. He loves it that they want earmarks and he will drive a train through it. He will use this as his reach across the isle point. I can hear him now – You guys can use yours to bribe more votes, and I’ll use mine to further the destruction of the country.

It will be just like the first 700 speeches Obama gave where all he had to do was say that Bush did big spending and bailouts, so don’t complain while I mulitply my Socilaization spending and bailouts by 500 – again.

The second and third groups up there are really disgraceful (and Cornyn too for other reasons)

It makes me sick that this is how we have to deal with these guys after the great accomplishment last week.

Kudos to the first group, (minus Cornyn for other reasons,)
Shame on the second progressive core group.
Shame on the third progressive, “pragmatic” group.

Given the way the Senate is dealing with this, I expect very little from many of them in the months to come.

I hope they prove me wrong.

is deliberately designed to be hard to change. It’s a feature, not a bug, as the saying goes.

What it means is that we the people have got to keep the heat on.

Keep pushing. Keep demanding accountability. Keep putting up primary challenges and get rid of the losers.

    Bribes.

There’s a reason people enter Congress as ordinary people and within a few years they have enough money to burn a wet mule. They run for re-election term after term after term for the money, not the power.

They can earmark a quarter of a million here, or $250 million there, and it all comes back to them. Either with that sweet campaign cash, or favors, vacations, jobs for the kids or wife, etc.

And members are willing to vote for bad legislation if it means that the new highway includes an interchange right next to their parents’ property, or allocates money to the shell corporation owned by their son who is a ‘consultant’ on that historic property renovation project that’s been functioning as a cash cow for years.

‘Earmarks’ are bribes, plain and simple. The member chooses a favorite project and funnels taxpayer money into it, even though it couldn’t qualify on its own merits for the myriad programs already in existence. This must stop. If the members we have now won’t stop it, they go out in the next primary. Accept no substitutes for honor in our representatives.

are on the pro-earmarks list the Republican Party has less than 50 per cent participation in the precinct committeeman ranks. I already know this to be true in Kentucky, McConnell’s state, because a couple days ago I looked at the Republican Party of Kentucky web site and then looked at every Republican county committee web site listed there was absolutely no mention, save for two county web sites, about HOW and WHY registered Republicans ought to take the next step and become precinct committeemen.

Save your phone calls, faxes and e-mails. Unless they say something along the lines of the two following examples, you are wasting your breath, because as long as the senators know the status quo remains unchanged back in their home states, in terms of participation by conservatives in the precincts as precinct committeemen, they will probably cruise to victory in their primary election. On the other hand, if conservatives flocked into the precinct committeemen positions in droves, the senators would realize something was amiss back home.

So, you need to be able to truthfully say one or the other:

I am a conservative Republican Party precinct committeeman and I am recruiting every conservative I can to come into the Party with me as a precinct committeeman for the sole purpose of making sure you and all like you who do not uphold your oath of office will not be returned to office in the next election

    or

I am a conservative Republican and I am taking steps to become a precinct committeeman and I am recruiting every conservative I can to come into the Party with me as a precinct committeeman for the sole purpose of making sure you and all like you who do not uphold your oath of office will not be returned to office in the next election.

Precinct committeemen are instrumental in helping Get Out The Vote in the all-important, traditionally-very-low-turnout primary elections. And the incumbents know it. That’s why they never talk about it. Search the internet for videos of incumbent conservative senators and representatives imploring conservatives to become precinct committeemen. Other than a video of Arizona state Sen. Russell Pearce doing so (which I’ve linked on my little blog below), you won’t find any. If you do, please let me know.

Why don’t they talk about it? Because they are TERRIFIED that conservatives might actually take that advice and become precinct committeemen and fill up all of the empty slots. And, then, they might face a better, more conservative challenger in their primary election. Ask “conservative” Utah Sen. Bob Bennett.

After reviewing the Kentucky Republican Party web sites, I did a search to see what I else I could find about how to become a precinct committeeman in Kentucky. Found this great site with a complete plan and strategy for taking over the Kentucky Republican Party:

    http://www.takeovergop.com/KYrules.php

This isn’t rocket science. It’s a pure numbers game. If YOU want a better, more conservative Republican Party than YOU have to get inside it by becoming a voting member of it.

If you want to put pressure on incumbent “conservatives,” then you have to demonstrate that you have the power to take them out in the primary election. The BEST way to do that is fill up all the empty precinct committeemen slots with conservatives, because precinct committeemen are instrumental in getting out the vote and, if they have a majority in their local GOP committees, can even vote to endorse candidates in the primary elections.

You can find this all out by getting to your local committee meetings and getting your hands on the bylaws. Again, this is not rocket science and any registered Republican can do this. Will you? I hope so.

Tell them they will pay for their tone deafness

I can do research and see if there is anything concerning Precinct Committemen in MS, if both Rs are against the moratorium and the previous one (Lott) has been a promoter of earmarks, then there needs to be more PCs. MS needs it’s two Demints in the future and one of them is facing relection in 2012.

  • chbroussard

This is NOT brain surgery. Either you’re for earmarks or you’re against them. Good grief. Make a damn decision. Stand for something. Anyone on the undecided list deserves to be on the “to be primaried” list along with the ones voting for it.

Lamar won’t change his mind. I’ll call again, but he likes the old school.

I met him at our county headquarters and he praised the local party’s push to get more precinct committee chairs filled. I told him that I was an active tea party member that plans on working within the party to create change. He responded graciously, but I get the impression he is not a big tea party fan.

Rob Portman – forgot to ask for name of staffer, no position although staffer mentioned transparency and Rob supporting 1yr moratorium, I stated my case of supporting DeMint’s resolution and that I’m a PC and say that earmarks are still bad for Republicans even if they are transparent
Richard Lugar – Staffer name is John, no position
Dan Coates – Can’t get to a staffer, left message to support resolution, then found on his website that he currently supports it.
Mark Kirk – Staffer name is Kristian, was very receptive and friendly. Kirk currently supports it.
Roy Blunt – Tried # on campaign website and turned out to be a disconnected number (hm)
Lamar Alexander – Staffer name is Caroline, no position
Mitch McConnell – Staffer put me on hold (to probably cut me off cause she couldn’t seem to handle me respectable frustration). I stated to her that I’m a PC, will get more PCs signed up, am disturbed by Mitch’s position and ask that will he change his mind (without being rude). Then trying to call his office again, this time another staffer (male) and told him my case. With Rand elected, I wonder if they are shaking a little. 2014 is the year!

There are bigger fish to fry.

However the capitulation and betrayal on earmarks foreshadows a let down on the bigger issues.

Still totally recco the diary as earmarks do need to be killed.

The most important thing we can be doing today is not maneuvering for 2012. The most important thing we can do today is figure out how to convey a strong message to the Republicans, House and Senate, that we will hold them accountable in 2012 for their failures and betrayals of today.

    We will not forget.

As Reagan said, “If you can’t make them see the light, make them feel the heat.”

This is a case of the last rat leaving the ship before his toes got wet….and Inhofe is left twisting in the wind!

If I’m right on my timeline… I’ll do an update to my Diary and fill everyone in on what I’ve figured out.

        • Kentucky Scott

when he made that speech but he is a politician and politicians are good at tacking their sail in the direction of the wind. As the minority leader in the 112th Senate, it would not have looked to good to be on the losing side on the first big caucus vote … dare I say he is a tiny bit worried about being ex-minority leader? None of them wanted Paul, Rubio and DeMint in front of the cameras tonight bemoaning the “business as usual” mentality of the Beltway Republicans. I love small victories no matter how hypocritical the motivation.

Now the final knife in the back for Inhofe et al is to make the vote public instead of anonymous … let Grahamnesty and company be on the record as Republican porkers for the next election cycle
