I think there's a bit too much soul searching going on here. Sure many of our prominent leaders are making lists of reasons why we lost in this election while the MSM eggs them on and cackles gleefully. And it's true that a good number of our elected officials in Washington have betrayed what it means to be a Conservative. However I think it's worth considering how much of an impact the MSM had on selecting McCain as our candidate ("Fred's campaign failed to launch!" "Americans will never vote for a Mormon!" "Huckabee is unpalatable for most Republicans!"), how far they went to derail Hillary's candidacy, then how much they did to throw the general election to the Democrat party. Imagine an election pitting Hillary (and Bill's skeletons) against a real Conservative who could stood in contrast to both the failings of the Democrat Congress and W's big government tenure in the White House. Let's stop with the self-flagellation and start defining our message and our candidates on our terms.

and John Danforth, (founder and CEO of RMSP) did his part for Thomas as well...and has publicly bewailed his part in "Smearing" Anita Hill and being a tool of "extreme Right Wing Christians"

More later in my RMSP series!

1) I agree that we win on being the party of conservative ideas.

2) I think that we have to be realistic and allow moderates in certain areas. For instance, I'll take the Maine sisters any time. We aren't going to win with conservatives there.

HOWEVER, we do need conservatives in conservative areas of the country and we need some good candidates not just the latest name on the good old boy list.

Eliazbeth Dole lost because she is a terrible candidate and not really all that conseravtive in a conservative state.

3) We do need to get back to working for all three legs of the stool (I would suggest that Illegal immigration is a big enough issue to be a 4th leg, myself).

I understand that any diary posted is a crap shoot...but some of us do appreciate the educational value of your experience. I would gladly recommend a diary written by you on civics. I would also comment thoroughly, mostly with questions, in order to learn more.

It is going to take both education in philosophy and actual nuts and bolts to accomplish what all of us want. I am more geared towards philosophy and you more towards nuts and bolts...it should be symbiotic not adversarial. And unfortunately it has to be continual because the membership here is not static. Just like the failures after the 94 revolution...they thought people "got it" and stopped teaching, that ended up screwing us in the end (double entendre I know).

Anyhow, I hope you don't think of me as an opponent. Not my intent. I just want to see conservative philosophy and conservative government realized within my lifetime so that I can pass those on to my daughter, and hopefully allow this "grand experiment" to survive as long as possible.

Back in 2.0 I wrote a lot of "nuts and bolts" and how it works diaries and comments focusing specifically on what it is like inside an Executive Branch trying to turn policy into program.

Frankly it is a frustrating exercise to spend some time and effort on somehthing like that and to have it get a comment or recco or two and pass quickly into oblivion. On some that addressed some "hot" issue somebody would pick them up for the front page but most here would prefer philosophy to bureaucracy 101.

Last I looked a pretty general "We lost because we suck" diary has a couple of dozen reccos and almost 180 comments. Even blackhedd's almost prescient and very erudite diaries usually only get twenty or thirty comments unless he says something really controversial, and he can post to the front page.

There's really not a lot of use in putting a lot of work into something just to make people's eyes glaze over, but I do try to comment on the obvious things. Maybe this issue will get better now that it is easier to actually have a colloquy on 3.0, even though I still have to restart IE to keep the comments up to date. And yes I know that's an IE problem, but I do a lot of work in the other parts of Office, so I need the integration and I'm not going to get a separate browser just for RS.

Achance, I was literally saying the exact same thing to my husband the other night--that we should require people to take a citizenship test to vote. I mean, we make people take a written test to get a driver's license. Why not demand a written test in order to register to vote as well?

By the way, Haystack, welcome back. Long time no see. I've missed you. :-)

WRT my youthful enthusiasm. I admit I am politically young and I have done so on multiple occasion here on RS. I have even asked advice from you specifically. I voted for McCain out of duty because I understand that Obama will be worse. I even wrote blogs in support of him and debated on how we could support him without compromising principle. Now that we lost I have tried to focus back on principles in an effort to learn from the mistakes of the past.

Now with all that said, what are you doing to teach us youngins about the system? Are you putting out blogs that share your experience and convey strategies that us youngins need to learn so we can employ them? Are you trying to educate us dolts on how to do what you have done? Or are you just telling us to give in and embrace the suck because it will never change and our efforts are pointless?

Just wondering because if it is all really pointless and we will never be able to govern with principle then I will just stop and leave politics to people like you.

Well I don't want to get to deep in a historical disertation but...

First of all the text you quote speaks to the existance of anti-semitism during the Weimar years-it says nothing about policies of the government that encouraged it. And Jewish politician Rosa Luxembourg???

If by 'Jewish politician' you mean leading communist (head of the Spartacist League) who was killed by the Freikorps while trying to overthrow the government-not exactly racially motivated.

No one said anti Semitic didn't exist in Europe outside Germany...it obviously did from the middle ages forward....Russia and the pogroms are another example...but it was carried to a high art form in the Weimar Republic. It was taught, inculcated and and ultimately carried to it's obvious conclusion in the holocaust through official government policy in the Weimar Republic.

Flat out wrong there was no 'official government policy' of pograms or repression by the Weimar government.

As for where fascism began...yes Italy was the birth place of the fascist form of government or at least where the was term was coined but the term and the system it represented a tool to be used by Hitler and his henchmen as they set about forming an empire of super men and proving the theories of Fredric Nietzsche.

Actually both Mussolini and Hitler drew inspiration from (and were admired by) the progressives in the U.S. Wilson was a Fascist role model before there was a term for it.

Truth be told I don't know if voting or not voting in Germany during the Weimar Republic would have made any difference but were I living there I don't know how I could have voted for either of those vile and despicable governments and doubt I would have...

It's like asking if you had a choice between Hitler or Stalin...which would you vote for?

Bad example. First of all the two were allies, and Hitler was prefered by the German Communists over the liberal Weimar government. A better question (since the whole 30s Germany thing seems to be distracting) would be, if you had to choose between boring mediocre Ford, or hopey changey Carter, who do you pick?

If the answer is neither, fine. If you can't tell the difference, that's okay. Back in 1976, I thought they both sucked.

Of course, I was in high school then. I've grown up since.

You gotta wonder why that was done when it was done, huh? The only time we'd had a lead then the "financial crisis" erupts and the price of gas declines at an unheard of rate. Funny thing!

Most of her major legislation has been passed with a lot of Democrat support; sometimes more Democrat than Republican.

We'll see how that works now that she's the Democrats' bete noir and has po'd a bunch of Republicans here.

I think that if someone asked me to objectively name John McCain's biggest campaign mistakes, it would be not focusing on his economic message soon enough, and not hanging Fannie and Freddie around Obama's neck. I realized this at the time, which is why I wrote this diary to try to connect Obama, Dodd, Frank, Raines, ACORN, etc. to the financial crisis. However, given how toxic the political environment was for McCain once the Financial crisis hit (and how biased the media was), I'm not too sure that it would have helped all that much.

By the way, the above diary also contains a link to an awesome diary written by Civil Truth that stated that Hank Paulson might have helped hand the election to Obama--boy was he prescient.

Usage of this word in any manner or form should be prohibited for every republican.

I heard Gov. Palin use this word today and I was like "do I know her as well as I thought I did?"

btw... I believe this is precisely the reason for the election day beating.
