Palin Who? (Also, today’s Open Thread)

Since it looks like the front page is going to be consumed with the all-important topic of Palin’s announcement today, I propose an open thread. Only one rule: you cannot mention Sarah Palin in any way, shape, or form. If you do, I will make certain that acat or myself will plague you with a recipe from some ethnic food group.

I’ll kick us off with the following delightful news article about the Bakken oil fields I read yesterday (h/t CNN):

“Believe it or not, a place exists where companies are hiring like crazy, and you can make $15 an hour serving tacos, $25 an hour waiting tables and $80,000 a year driving trucks.

You just have to move to North Dakota. Specifically, to one of the tiny towns surrounding the oil-rich Bakken formation, estimated to hold anywhere between 4 billion and 24 billion barrels of oil[...]

While it is home to less than 3,000 permanent residents, there are about 6,500 people there right now, as job hunters relocate to seek out high-paying jobs.”

Huh, I guess oil extraction *does* produce more than just profits for those evil corporations. Remind me why shouldn’t we drill in ANWR, again?

COMMENTS

  • lineholder

If it earns me a recipe, make it a good one, please.

I really don’t know much of anything about the oil industry. I know that it is extremely lucrative, that we have economic options we might be using but aren’t. If Republicans are in a position after the next election to get those oil wells up and pumping again, realistically speaking, how long would it take?

    • aesthete

or otherwise connected to the industry so I can’t really answer that question. I just find it interesting that there’s an ideal source where 1) high paying jobs would be created, 2) the product being extracted would be useful to all Americans, and 3) there’s almost no downside. Seems to me like it’d be a no-brainer to open the area up to exploration/excavation, if we’re really trying to create employment and prosperity in the US. The way I look at it, the sooner we allow it, the sooner these oil wells would be up and pumping. This would make a great populist talking point for Republicans: after all, this is something that Republicans have wanted to do for a while, and that is objectively a folly that is owned lock, stock and barrel by the Obama administration.

      • lineholder

start bringing up options we could be presenting that might swing people to our side. Got others? Chat away!!

I guess they are not unstopable.

      • aesthete

Honestly, Detroit doesn’t have good football, it’s the only major metropolis that’s lost people… is there anything about Detroit that isn’t abjectly terrible? :)

        • http://www.usdebateboard.com usdebateboard

They were 4-0 at the end of last season, and are 3-0 this season.

The Lions are getting better, that much is true. Still, they’ve got a long ways to go…

        • gekster

won thier last for games last year. went 4-0 in pre season,
and are 3-0 as of now.
          Play at Dallas on Sunday.

Lets see, 11 straight wins, including a come from behind, down 20-0 at halftime, to win 26-23 in OT against the Vikings,
where the hadn’t won in 13 years.
Not shabby for a bunch of loosers.

As far as loosing population, that’s what 50+ years of liberal Dem control will do to ya.

          • aesthete

I have too many friends from Detroit who would maul me if I weren’t at least a little bit of one. Plus, I like rooting for the underdog, and it was tough to be a Lions fan in 08-09 especially. The Lions used to be pretty consistently awesome in the 90s, though — and they’re starting to regain that. Hopefully, they’ll continue to do well.

has anyone seen the Kindle Fire from Amazon. I pre-ordered one today. I’m looking forward to getting it in November.

I have had a kindle for about a year, and am pretty happy with it. Actually, I couldn’t imagine reading any other way. Hopefully, I’ll be just as happy with the Fire as I am with my Kindle.

    • aesthete

My dad bought a regular Kindle last year and he swears by it. For myself, I’m slobbering over the Kindle Touch — but I’m going to wait until Black Friday to see if anyone has a sale. The Fire is built on less-than-impressive hardware, but I think that its price, coupled with Amazon support and the Amazon ecosystem, will make it an outstanding product that’s more than the sum of its parts. I would get one if I didn’t already have an iPad.

      • Kenny Martsolf

that they came out with the Touch within a year of my buying a regular Kindle. I guess I’ll upgrade at some point. The price of the Kindle just keeps dropping, too. Amazon has really good customer service as well. My Kindle got a line across the screen where the e-ink didn’t show. It really wasn’t too big of a deal, but they sent me a new one the next day with a prepaid shipping tag to return my old one.

        • aesthete

and I’m having a tough time convincing myself that I don’t need a Kindle Fire. Amazon has fantastic customer service — I’ve never had a problem with returns or late items that they didn’t rectify very quickly, and I’ve heard nothing but good things about the Kindle. Fortunately, the Kindle Fire’s lack of e-ink makes it an easier decision for me than it would otherwise be.

          • Kenny Martsolf

Most of my Amazon orders are ebooks, so I didn’t really need it for the shipping discounts. I ordered it for the instant video to replace Netflix Instant. Their Library has grown enough that I thought it would be worth giving it a try.

I probably won’t use the Fire as a reader, since I also have a regular Kindle. It is just so much easier on the eyes to read with e-ink compared to a backlit screen.

          • Bill S

I have had Prime for a couple of years, and it was great even before the streaming video. And I, too, am tempted to order one. However, I do already have an iPad, but it doesn’t work with Amazon video streaming….and I’m thinking it may be a while before they fix that, now that the Fire is coming.

          • Kenny Martsolf

I wouldn’t have ordered one. Since I don’t, I’m pretty excited to get it. November 15th seems so far away, all of the sudden.

  • lineholder

I’ve always heard that politics changes people, and after what’s gone on this week (especially today), I’m gaining insight with each moment that passes just how true this is.

I’m not sure that I like what it changes people into, and I’m not sure that I want to experience those kinds of changes either.

Tomorrow is another day, hopefully a better one.

I’m sure North Dakota would be great for those who don’t mind living in a deep freeze most of the year.

    Ingredients
1 12 oz. can evaporated milk
    5 eggs
    1 tsp. vanilla extract
    1/8 tsp. salt
    1/2 cup sugar (for mix)
    3/4 cup sugar (for caramel)

    Directions
In a Pyrex (glass) round baking mold, place the 3/4 cup sugar and cook on medium heat (Do not stir) until you get a golden light brown caramel. DO NOT BURN FOR IT TASTES BAD!!!

Coat the caramel all around the mold and set aside.

In a blender, mix the eggs, evaporated milk, 1/2 cup sugar, vanilla extract and salt.

Pour the mix through a strainer and into the caramelized mold.

Cook in the microwave oven for 8 minutes covered.

Be sure and put a plate under the mold in case the carmel over flows.

To make sure it is done, do the knife test by inserting a knife in the middle of the flan. If it comes out clean, it is done.

Let the flan cool off for about 2 hours. Run a knife around the rim of the mold then, very carefully, turn it over onto a flat plate just before you are going to serve it.

    Garnish with berries.

    Tips
If you love the caramel, add more sugar when making the caramel.

Serve with ice cream or your favorite fruit.

There’s also a coffee version that’s pretty good, btw.

The Braves are out of it. Like my Red Sox, they entered September almost guaranteed to make the playoffs, and somehow managed to blow it on the last night of the regular season (well, they both spent most of September blowing it. Especially the Red Sox).

  • lineholder

I grew up in Greenville, SC, which isn’t that far from Clemson. Going to those games was amazing experience!

  • aesthete

They spent a lot on their team, and they were supposed to be getting on board with SABREnomics-type stuff. Was there ever a more hyped team that does as poorly as the Red Sox consistently do?

    BTW, anyone seen Moneyball?

  • lineholder

Glad you made it through. Quite a squeeze in the bar room tonight, isn’t it?

  • Kenny Martsolf

I’m from Ohio, so I’m a Buckeyes fan. That isn’t necessarily a good thing this year with the trouble the program has gotten into. I usually go down to Columbus for a couple of games each year. Always a good time.

From the middle of May to the end of August, they were head and shoulders above the rest of the league. Too bad April and September’s record had to count against them. If you haven’t seen, they let their manager, Terry Francona, go today.

  • http://www.usdebateboard.com usdebateboard

Sure about that? It’s at Camp Randall. Bucky has brought many a better team to its knees there.

But Bielema does tend to blow marquee games, like the Rose Bowl, natch.

  • aesthete

based on a book of the same name which tracks the attempt on the part of A’s manager Billy Beane to make it a competitive team, which was pretty hard to do when you’re a small team with not much in terms of team payroll. He did that by employing a bunch of statistics geeks to perform stats analyses of player stats, to make good purchases and more accurately assess their value. This use of stats was called SABREnomics, and revolutionized the way that players are traded and valued. (It’s very controversial among baseball fans.)

I’m a huge baseball nerd, I enjoyed reading “Moneyball”, and think the whole SABREnomics concept is very interesting — but I dislike Aaron Sorkin, and find pretty much everything he’s done in movies and TV to be unwatchable, indulgent dreck. (He made “The West Wing” and “The Social Network”.)

  • lineholder

This ought be fun. You won’t be happy come Sunday, you do know that, right?

  • lineholder

Still in the learning curve, but love it all the same. So what about SABREnomics stirred so much controversy? Was it dishonest? Or did it give them an advantage no one expected?

  • Kenny Martsolf

but I played golf with a friend who raved about it for most of 18 holes yesterday. I may have to check it out.

  • http://www.usdebateboard.com usdebateboard

Well, and Scott Walker. But the Governor’s mansion is across the lake in Maple Bluff.

  • lineholder

An eyewitness to WI Operation Chaos in our midst. How are things going there? I keep checking to see how the school system in the state is doing, but I haven’t heard anything lately.

  • aesthete

    there are basically 3 controversies:

    1) Stats and sabermetrics in baseball went from being undervalued to being overvalued very, very quickly. Like anything that’s overhyped, fans got tired of being told that it was “revolutionary”, “historical”, that it completely changed the game, etc. Pushback started, noting that the old way of doing things (hands-on experience and savvy selections based on observation) had its advantages, because a team is more than just a collection of stats: it’s supposed to work well together and be more than the sum of its parts. That’s something that statistics can’t account for (and to be fair to those critics, they have a point when it comes to some of the more zealous/bad implementation of SABREnomics in later adopters).

    2) Billy Beane is seen as a jerk with an ego who got lucky. Since SABREnomics, he hasn’t really done anything worth writing home about, and his personality ain’t exactly a shining jewel.

    3) This is the big one: some fans say that it has led to a less organic, more soulless experience. They say that having a bunch of Harvard geeks work on a spreadsheet or play with STATA to figure out who’s gonna be on the team takes away the magic of the experience. Personally, I’m not one of those people — I like watching the game and learning about the statistics behind selection.

    4) During 2001ish, IIRC, the A’s had a lot of players who did steroids. Now, the team still did well after the steroids thing blew over, but you still have a lot of people out there saying that the A’s did well only because of the steroids (which is not true).

It’s not unethical and it was a good idea, but it’s now the consensus, and some fans honestly don’t like it, or have a bone to pick with the A’s team of that time.

  • http://www.usdebateboard.com usdebateboard

The school systems that renegotiated their teachers contracts under the Walker plan are doing fine. The ones that hurried up and re-upped before the law went into effect are canning teachers left and right.

    So, his way worked.

Walker’s top aide resigned today to run what is expected to be his recall election.

Two steps forward and one step back. $#(*&&

  • lineholder

I do love stats, but I’ve seen how the chemistry between members of a team can light up any type of sports activity in a split second.

Matter of fact, Dean Smith went more with a solid, well-based team when he coached the Tarheels, and it was like watching magic in action!! Roy Williams is okay, but Dean had something really special. He had the “touch” as they would say.

  • http://www.usdebateboard.com usdebateboard

Ever heard him wank on and on about baseball?

  • wonkish1

Sorry to highjack the comments about MoneyBall. My dad went and saw last night and came back raving.

But I think us conservatives are really, really going to like the new Starz show, Boss.

Kelsey Grammar plays a corrupt, morally bankrupt, and mean Democrat Chicago Mayor who finds out that he has a degenerative medical condition. The show is most closely modeled after Dick Daley. And the show hasn’t even aired yet and the network already signed a deal for the 2nd season(unheard of).

This show was fought over by 4 separate networks before Starz won and its the first show for Starz since former head of HBO moved there who was the guy that brought us the Soprano’s, Band of Brothers, Deadwood, Entourage, Sex and the City, etc.

Keep a look out for it. They are expecting the show to be a huge player pretty quickly.

  • lineholder

(Backs slowly away from corner where gester and sugar mama are, and didn’t see a thing)

  • aesthete

I’m a sucker for those. I did really love love Deadwood and Band of Brothers. Sopranos was OK, and I haven’t come close to touching Sex and the City or Entourage. BTW, has anyone seen any good TV shows or miniseries, recently?

  • lineholder

do you think they’ll soften it a bit to make Daley look good?

  • wonkish1

In my opinion next to 0.

They have a problem who are they going to put up for it. Baldwin is running for senate and Feingold is out. They have nobody left with any name recognition in the state.

Their bench is finished. So from a practical level I think most of the wind is out of their sails.

  • http://www.usdebateboard.com usdebateboard

Must be a credible threat, since Walker is already beginning the campaign and the petitions have not been filed yet.

The thing is OFA and their ilk put a lot of boots on the ground for the State Senate recalls. I can’t fathom they can do that in 2012 when Obama’s re-election is on the line.

Tens of millions was poured into those campaigns. Can they/would they/could they do it again to take on Walker if Obama is strapped for cash, as we are told?

  • Kenny Martsolf

Well, really good IMHO. TV shows right now are Sons of Anarchy and Justified. Both are on FX. SOA is on on Tuesday nights. It is in it’s 4th season right now. Justified starts it’s 3rd Season after the beginning of the year. I know that there have been a lot of new shows to start this year, but I haven’t watched any of them.

  • wonkish1

Its pretty well centered over Kelsey Grammar as Mayor Kaine.

  • wonkish1

    That’s really good.

The 24 crew has a new highly anticipated show called “Homeland” that is coming out on Sunday, but they actually posted the first episode online to create buzz. That one is on Showtime.

    Otherwise Mad Men isn’t bad.

  • rightwingmom52

Did you see The Pacific? While I thought BoB was the superior series, since my father-in-law served in the Pacific, it was interesting to watch.

  • lineholder

It will be a public vote. Between the success of the school systems following Walker’s plan and the success they’ve had generating jobs in the state, I don’t see it happening either.

Then again, I’m a SE resident. Very different environment.

  • http://www.usdebateboard.com usdebateboard

I thought Tammy Baldwin was running for Herb Kohl’s Senate seat?

I’m hoping Wisconsin can run a two-fer and elect another Senator more like Ron Johnson than Tommy Thompson or even Mark Neumann.

  • wonkish1

Many of the Republican senators got caught flat footed and unprepared when the Dems mounted their recall. The Republicans had to float fake Dems in the primary to delay it a little bit because they weren’t ready at all for a campaign.

Walker is smart to not make that mistake again. He’s going to get out ahead of this thing and have the resources and apparatus in place just in case they try to mount a serious campaign.

But from a practical standpoint. Who in Wisconsin has any name recognition, can put a statewide campaign together, raise money, etc. in time to take him down.

From a practical standpoint if Feingold is out they don’t have anybody to field. So you’re seeing more of professional Dem’s giving up and you have a bunch of the crazies determined to waste the next few months of their lives and another buttload of money.

  • lineholder

I don’t know. I guess they could go for it, debateboard. I read an article earlier this evening about another Obama fundraising event. It didn’t say how much they accumulated.

  • wonkish1

Its not really Daley. The guys name in the show is “Kaine” I believe. Its just takes inspiration from Daley. But they are apparently going to make the whole city look like a corrupt cesspool.

  • lineholder

So far, from what I can tell, he is as staunch as they come. Yeah, if they have more where that came from, they should go for it!!!

  • Kenny Martsolf

Maybe we need a Friday evening open thread every week. It can’t hurt to discuss non-political things every once in a while.

  • lineholder

But then again, given that it’s being signed for second season before it airs, obviously they’ve got a combination they believe in. Maybe they’ll even come out with the little “Mayor Kaine” bobble-head doll…and a gun at his hip, of course.

  • wonkish1

No show gets signed beyond even a few episodes when its picked up.

When Albrecht won the bidding war he agreed to 6 episodes before casting had begun purely on how strong the script was. And to announce that you just signed a 2nd season before the 1st has even aired puts in a class of maybe only 2-3 shows of the last decade that have gotten that treatment.

  • lineholder

Do you know when the premiere is?

  • Bill S

All I can think of when I see the promos is “you’re out of your element, Donnie”

  • wonkish1

Starz has decided to go all out and turn around its network through new series. So they picked up Albrecht who is has been the most successful series helm of any network, but apparently also a drunk. They fought for the show they wanted the most and are going to try to use it to turnaround their network like Mad Men turned around AMC.

  • lineholder

It isn’t exactly my style. I’m into murder-and-mayhem/good-vs.-evil type stuff. But I have to admit that you’ve done a really good job at making it sound interesting!

  • aesthete

The only show on TV that I watch regularly without being sure if I really like it.

On the one hand, it’s set in the 60s, has great artistanship behind it, and is reasonably entertaining considering that it is, at heart, a high-concept soap opera.

On the other hand… it’s written from the “enlightened” POV of a Boomer, and is a wildly inaccurate portrayal of the era. It’s also a little more than over the top, sometimes. Then there’s the Betty Draper subplot. Ugh.

Of course, it does have Christina Hendricks in it…

  • aesthete

I’m a baseball fan; what can I say?

  • aesthete

It’s not nearly as good as the one my grandma makes, though: I’ve been asking her how to make hers for a couple years, now, but she doesn’t have a recipe so much as a practiced hand, when it comes to ingredients. Me? I’m too methodical to go with a pinchful of sugar and “this much” milk as a recipe.

  • lineholder

My mama did. My uncle does. Both my brothers do. One of my sons has the “touch” as well. I couldn’t explain it to you if I had to.

  • rightwingmom52

but I loved watching my grandmother cook (and my mom), neither of whom measure. I remember when my grandmother got an electric stove when I was in junior high I guess. She insisted on keeping her wood stove, and they sat side by side in the kitchen. To watch her throw wood in that stove and cook was really something.

I’m very reminiscent of her today, especially because she always made my favorite dessert for my birthday – caramel pie. She started by caramelizing the sugar in an iron skillet. The rest from scratch. I’ve never had anything like it since.

  • wonkish1

Well with people’s ability to pick the best items off a menu. They have an intuitive sense of what goes with what.

  • lineholder

But my favorites are the murder/crime series. I’ve started something of a collection, from Ironsides forward. Even have some of the classics derived from Agatha Christie novels.

  • aesthete

Not as good as BoB, but still great. BoB just had so many great moments: I recently re-watched it in Blu-Ray, and I forgot how superb the opening episode was. Also, I just love that episode where they land in the Netherlands: it was really interesting how jubilant and disturbing the liberation “celebration” could be at the same time.

Have you seen Inglorious Basterds? I recently saw it, and was quite amused — definitely very different from any other WWII movies I’ve seen, that’s for sure. I’ve been on a WWII kick recently: rewatched Das Boot, the truly amazing Clint Eastwood Flags of our Fathers/Letters from Iwo Jima set, and of course Saving Private Ryan. Any others I should watch?

  • rightwingmom52

I was out most of the evening, so even though I missed most of the fun, I have a recipe to share as my thanks.

    CRAB CAKES

1 pound jumbo or lump crab meat
    2 heaping tablespoons mayonnaise
    2 eggs, lightly beaten
    ? teaspoon Worcestershire
    ? teaspoon cayenne pepper
    ? teaspoon salt
? small onion, grated or minced
    ? tablespoon mustard powder
? cup green pepper, chopped (optional)
    18 Ritz crackers, crumbled

Combine all ingredients except the Ritz crackers. Add cracker crumbs to crab mixture as close to saute time as possible so they do not get too moist from the other ingredients.

Form into patties the size of hamburgers or hor d’oeuvres, depending on how they will be served.*

Saute in frying pan on medium to high heat in butter, about 10 minutes on each side. Make sure the crab cake is crispy outside but moist and juicy inside.

Makes about 6 hamburger sized cakes or 12-15 hor d’oeuvres. Recipe may be halved. *The smaller size is easier to saute.

Serve with Lemon Butter Sauce or a simple tartar sauce (mayonnaise, grated onion, lemon juice & chopped pickle).

    LEMON BUTTER SAUCE

    1 cup dry white wine
2 ? tablespoons grated lemon rind
    ? cup fresh lemon juice
    2 bay leaves
1 teaspoon each of black and white peppercorns or 2 teaspoons mixed peppercorns
    ? cup whipping cream
    1 pound butter, cubed*

Combine first 5 ingredients in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil and cook, uncovered, 10-12 minutes or until liquid is reduced to 1 tablespoon. Stir in whipping cream. Transfer to top of double boiler and place over hot, not boiling water. Add butter cubes slowly, beating with whisk until well blended. Pour mixture through mesh strainer and serve.

    Yield: 2 cups
Note: To keep sauce warm for up to 1 hour, let stand over hot water and whisk occasionally.

*I have made the sauce using only 1 or 2 sticks of butter instead of a pound when I didn’t need as much sauce. If you reduce the amount of butter, you may want to reduce the amount of lemon juice as well, depending on your taste.

The crab cakes recipe actually came from Robert Duvall’s mother. One of the few times I watched Oprah years ago before she went all nutty, he was the guest, and they made these. The sauce came from Southern Living. My son’s favorite meal that I cook. I like to saute some onion and fresh corn cut off the cob in some butter and serve that as a side dish. It’s really a little easier than it sounds, but be sure to take out the trash or your house will smell like fish the next morning.

Criminal Minds is my favorite crime show, and CSI:NY is a must watch because of Gary Sinise.

I have to admit I like Army Wives and The Good Wife for some girl time. With no other girls in the family, I see a lot of war, monster, zombie, alien, etc. movies, so I have to get a little balance somewhere.

Not much of a crab fan, but the SO digs sea food. Shrimp gumbo in Mobile, fresh crab legs in Seattle, and crab cakes at this seafood place near the bridge in Annapolis …

  • aesthete

I really enjoy seafood, so the very thought tantalizes me. Unfortunately, here in Tucson seafood is both poor quality and expensive. C’est la vie, I suppose — I’ll keep it in mind for when Safeway or Fry’s have a sale on crab, though.

  • runner12

It is really getting old as we are in the Big 10 (formerly the Big 12, then 10, now 9). Our teams are doing awesome on the field, especially mine. But the off-the-field nonsense is getting ridiculous.

I just wish everyone would make a decision and go with it. This waffling about business is silly.

  • rightwingmom52

so I usually eat a couple of small ones, and my husband and son eat the other dozen or so. It’s the sauce that’s key.

Did she roll her own crust? And did it include nuts of any sort?

  • aesthete

Drives me nuts how good they are at cooking. I can hold my own, and it usually impresses the ladies that I can cook (that comes in useful, heh), but I’m not nearly as good as I’d like to be.

I can grill pretty well, though.

  • lineholder

I’ve not gotten into cooking with herbs that much. Always wanted to give it a try, but it just hasn’t happened. My eldest son, he makes a herb marinate of his own recipe that he uses to baste on chicken or fish when he cooks on his grill. Makes your mouth water to just smell those herbs in the air!!

    (Now I’m making myself hungry)

  • aesthete

I figure out what I want to eat by chatting up the waitresses/cooks. And yes, it’s almost always waitresses; dunno why, but I’m averse to accepting the recommendations of male waiters.

Until that Roll Tide nonsense got in the way. :)

  • runner12

I wasn’t sure that was allowed in the SEC. I would think it would amount to heresy :) .

BTW, when Alabama plays LSU I am going with the Tide for the win. No offense to LSU.

  • aesthete

who thinks that football was better when they didn’t start making all of these arbitrary rules about team payrolls, salary caps and the like to try to “equalize” the teams. We never see those great historical teams like the ’49ers or the Cowboys of the mid-90s, to say nothing of those awesome rivalries like Giants v Redskins and 49ers v Cowboys. Now, all you see is a bunch of flawed and incomplete teams that are constantly shifting around. To me, it’s just boring compared to how it used to be.

  • rightwingmom52

The SEC has been doing just fine dominating the BCS without messing up the mix. Since we’ve added A&M, there’s talk it’s going to mess with some of the long-standing, traditional rivalries. Can’t we leave anything alone? Must greed interfere with everything?

Please tell me you’re not an Auburn fan.

I’m an Ohio State fan. We are more than tired of being showed up by SEC teams in the national championship game, so I decided to hate them all!

During the AestheteCorp? board meeting working out how this open thread could best distract from THE PALIN, one of our underlings approached me without permission and suggested that sports were an even more volatile and emotional subject than politics. I of course had him caned for his insolence, but he had a point. This small seed, of course, grew into the sapling that you see before you in the form of this open thread. It was such a good idea, that I almost considered *not* having the underling punished… but then I remembered that he’s a Duke fan :P

longer play TX. But the Aggies are happy to be going to the SEC, even though I fear they will have a tough time of it initially. The SEC West is probably the toughest league in the nation, followed by the Big 12 South.

It makes me sad that it is all coming down to money and tv contracts rather than just playing good football.

I can remember when the ACC was 8 teams. Growing up in Greenville, SC, it was always about the Clemson Tigers for us Football, basketball, soccer, and even baseball! Now it’s up to 12 teams!

But I have to say that since they added BC into the league, it’s leveled out a bit. Or at least I think it has, although I’m sure Mike could provide us with more info about this than I can.

I live in NC now, and with most of my family members very avid Tarheel fans, I like the Mountaineers myself.

goes to “The University” as it’s called here in Alabama because there is no other, you really don’t have much choice if you want to make your marriage work.

The third Saturday in October is the one game I refuse to watch with other family and friends. We’ve had people almost stop speaking to each other in the past, so we just watch it by ourselves and make up afterward.

Our agreement is that we each pull for our team unless the other team looks like they have a shot to go undefeated and play for the championship. Then we’re either neutral or pull for the undefeated team. (Like ‘Bama in 2009!). We’ve not yet faced the situation of both teams being undefeated.

Thanks for the support against LSU. I’ve got a bet with kyle8 that AL beats them. Of course, after that fiasco last year, I’m really hoping TN can as well.

She did roll her own pie crust, and topped it off with meringue. I tried to write down the recipe once as she made it, but it was difficult with no measurements. A little dab of this and a pinch of that. Even the best cooks in the family (my mom was the oldest of her 8 girls and 3 boys) cannot recreate the pie. The caramel would set so it was firm, but so creamy.

create enmity between family members and friends, only to make it all up afterwards with a meal and some iced tea.

I live in OK, which we consider to be more Southern than otherwise. So I know of which you speak.

Although I recently discovered through this conference re-alignment business that we are not considered Southern by those in the South. To them we are the “western” states, which makes me laugh a little because the thought of having anything in common with states like CA is rather amusing.

It is always interesting to hear how others perceive the state in which you live.

Since this open thread went so swimmingly, who would favor having an unofficial weekly sports ‘n tech ‘n stuff open thread, to relieve some tension ’round these parts? Whatwith the rancor of picking someone in a contentious primary, it might do the community some good to unwind.

(At the very least, you can pick on a Rick Santorum or Ron Paul supporter for having bad taste in both politics and football :) )

bake. I am pretty good at all other forms of cooking, but my baking skills are near or below zero. Cakes, pies, or pastries are all beyond my comprehension. I can follow recipes right down to the letter, and still mess them up. I have tried to make breads before, and it wasn’t as bad as my attempts at baking deserts. I envy people that bake well.

Not quite south and not quite west. A beautiful state – at least what I’ve seen.

BTW, one of my pet peeves is having to ask for “sweet” tea. Growing up, I didn’t know there was any other way to drink tea other than with lots of sugar and on ice. I make a gallon fresh at least every week.

  • rightwingmom52

Didn’t quite do it for me, but my men liked it. Love Saving Private Ryan (Edward Burns is an underrated actor IMO), and Dirty Dozen is a classic. All of those old classics are worth watching again. The Great Escape, Kelly’s Heroes.

We have The Best Years of Our Lives recorded but haven’t watched it yet and have never seen it.

If you haven’t seen The Boy In The Striped Pajamas, it’s worth watching.

I use all of the recipes that my mom has passed down. Her brother also taught me how to make a liquid that has similar ingredients to bread. I think they call it beer. I enjoy making it more than drinking it, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t get drank.

I will keep an eye out for your recipes. They sound good, and acat can’t be the only one growing my recipe file. That will wear the poor cat out.

basketball with hockey. Hockey season is probably my favorite. When Ohio got the Blue Jackets back in 2000, I turned my back on the Penguins and have seen at least 85% of their games (mostly on TV, I only go to about 8-10 a year). I think this is finally the year they will make a decent playoff run. Of course, I have been saying that for a few years.

  • rightwingmom52

at the appropriate time, and outside of the SEC, I love Coach K and Duke. Shane Battier was one of my all-time favorite college players.

Again with the growing up…Dad had a hand crank and we’d all take turns. Everybody in the family has a White Mountain electric now, but he insists the old hand crank was always better. We used to make it a lot with my parent’s best friends throughout the entire year. I remember one New Year’s Eve sitting outside with coats on eating homemade ice cream.

  • rightwingmom52

Just never really had a place to grow anything in the burbs until we moved last year. Our place now, even though we’re still in the burbs, has good soil and lots of sun. Did the whole herb thing for the first time. Basil, rosemary, oregano, regular mint, chocolate mint. The regular mint is great in tea.

We grew some tomatoes, too. We are hooked on our own tomatoes drizzled with balsamic vinegar & olive oil. Sometimes we add a little fresh mozzarella or blue cheese. When we went to the Grand Canyon last year, we went through Sedona and stopped at an olive oil shop. Sampled lots of different flavors and brought some home along with the aged balsamic which is totally different from what you find in the grocery stores. We’re spoiled now.

I have always liked Duke basketball and Coach K is a legend. The rivalry between Duke and NC is just awesome to watch. Two legendary programs playing in the same conference you have to love.

BTW, I have heard the the Duke campus is one of the most beautiful in the country.
